Short answer : for mailmerge, no. You must use Base in combination with
Writer

If you want a report, you can :
(1) use the Oracle Report Builder, which is a built-in extension,
accessible, for example, via a Base (ODB) file ;

(2) use a Calc file and design your own report using data ranges;
(3) use a Writer file, and insert your data fields from the table or
query of your choice ;
(4) write an external program using python, javascript, beanshell, perl,
php, etc to manipulate ODF compliant XML and interface that with your
datasource.

If there any tutorial or suggestion pls do let me know tQ your's help are
much appreciated...

I'm using LibreOffice 3.4.4 from the Mageia 1 repositories with KDE,
trying to print to a Deskjet 5650 printer, and I'm having problems
with this, too. My problem is related to that experienced by the Arch
user in your second link, in that landscape -oriented spreadsheets
from Calc aren't printing properly - to say the least. Mine prints
fine until it gets to the 8.5 inch mark, then it prints a truncated
version of the last column over and over until the edge of the paper.
Print Preview looks fine, and while I haven't tried it yet I suspect
printing to a pdf file would work, too.

Changing the printer language to Postscript fixes it. I haven't
noticed the problem with other applications yet, but then I don't
print much as a regular rule, just this time of year.

I didn't have the problem last year, when I was using Mandriva 2010.2
and OpenOffice.

I can try to remember to change the printer language on every document
I make in the future, but like Mr. Jordan I think it's a pain in the
butt to remember to change it if I go to print old documents. I tried
running spadmin as root to change the default, but for some reason
Mageia wouldn't do it. Probably just as well, as I'm very much out of
my element when it comes to command line noodling.

It shouldn't have to be that way, anyway. There should be an easy way
to make Postscript the default, if you want.

TJ

I have not noticed any problems printing from Linux Mint 12. I would
check the default printer settings and test the printer with another
non-LO program to see if the problem is with the printer set up. The
printer could be set up to default everywhere to pdf not to postscript.

You can do lots of things with emacs. It´s not at all limited to the
programming of mainframes.

Everyone their own :) I´m using the combination of both by running the
programs I want in a "window environment". It´s just easier this way
than running them on a console and switching over to the GUI when
needed.

You can have emacs in a terminal or with its own frames (i. e. windows)
or both. You might try, though I guess you won´t like it.

> So the question is what you are doing for the typing?

For almost all the typing I do, I´m far better off with a text editor
than with an office package like LO. If it really comes to "WYSIWYG", I
wish I had a decent DTP program rather than only LO --- and Scribus
doesn´t cut it because you can´t reasonably place objects on a page in
such a way that they are aligned.

I don´t really have need/use for an office package like LO other than
one or the other occasional "odd" thing like a spreadsheet or a text
that needs the kind of formatting easily done with its writer --- and
the database part of LO is, unfortunately, worlds behind of what MS
Access offered years ago.

> I know that if you have had years worth of finger-memory for using the

Using a mouse or a menu is an interruption to me unless I´m actually
doing something "graphically". I´m not writing with a mouse or a
menu. I´m not drawing pictures with the keyboard. I´m not so much
visually orientated that I would memorise loads of icons, and I´m not
using them because I never know what they mean: This makes these icon
bars so many GUI applications have a total waste of screen space, and
it´s usually not easy to just turn them off. Using a GUI can be rather
straining on me because everything looks the same and it´s very
difficult to figure out what is what --- it´s hard to explain if you
don´t experience it yourself.

There are just many things that can be done easier and/or more
efficiently with the keyboard and another many things that can be done
easier and/or more efficient with a GUI.

Yeah, indeed. That´s another thing that makes these GUI applications so
awkward to use: You are forced to use the mouse, and for many things, I
don´t like that because it´s so interrupting, slows everything down and
makes it more difficult and straining.

And LO still isn´t advanced enough that you can have scroll bars on the
left side where they belong and not on the right side, and copy and
paste doesn´t work right. Emacs and xterm and other apps do it just fine
...

To me, there´s quite a difference between "make application A (behave)
like application B" and "be able to define (some frequently used) key
bindings in application A to be the same ones as in application B for
the same functionality". Do you want, for example, your MUA behave like
the spreadsheet in LO --- or would you rather have the same key binding
in your MUA and in your spreadsheet for saving your work?

The latter isn´t a new idea. And isn´t LO "extraordinarily niche
orientated" in beeing programmable with it´s own programming language
--- or is it more like emacs in that regard than people happen to
notice?

> Why don't you just actually write documents in Emacs and do some LaTex
> or similar formatting like some other Emacs users do?

It´s because I´m not sufficiently familiar with LaTeX to always get the
result I want with LaTeX with the same amount of effort I can get the
result with LO. It has been the other way round as well. It´s only a
matter of chosing the right tool for the job --- and if I could adjust
the key bindings in LO to what I use in emacs, I could make the job
even easier for me.

[libreoffice-users] LO Writer - Strange behavior of paragraph styles

2012-02-01 Thread John D. Herron

Hi, everyone.

Running LO 3.4.3 OOO340m1 (Build:302) on Ubuntu 11.04 (Linux
2.6.38-generic-pae) w/ Gnome 2.32.1.

Find myself having to cope with some very strange behavior of paragraph
styles, not previously encountered in any version of OOo.

I defined my 'Default' style as follows: font Ubuntu 12 regular, no
indents, single spacing, 0.00" before and after, justified.

As I begin a new document and type a one-line paragraph, then press
Return to start a new paragraph, all is OK.
If I press Return once more (adding an empty line), the previous
paragraph gets indented without any prompting!
When I go back to the previous paragraph with "ArrowUp", the style
changes - without any prompting! - to Text Body...

If I go back to the beginning of any Default or Text Body paragraph and
press Return twice, the paragraph is transformed into text that is both
bold and increased in size...

All of this, though, merely scratches the surface of my paragraph-style
misadventures in LO.

It's enough to drive me insane, to the point where I'm seriously
considering returning to one of the recent versions of OpenOffice.

FWIW i DID carefully read the manual on styles and templates. Like I
said: no problems in OOo, a disaster in LO.
As an aside: can anyone tell me what difference there is between
'Default' and 'Text body'?

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to correct / troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance.
john

But... we don't want to convert the copied cells into an Impress Table

This is how it used to work a long time ago - and how Microsoft Office
works by default.

I don't know which version/update changed this...

I'll have to find an example spreadsheet/Presentation that causes this

Thanks for checking Cor...

Tanstaafl:

OOo 2.4.2 pastes as a calc8 file by default.
OOo 3.2.1 pastes as table of cells by default.

Hi Tom,

Thanks very much for looking at this, but a question to confirm...

It looks like you didn't check every version in between, just figured
out that it changed somewhere between 2.4.2 and 3.2.1, correct?

Now, I guess the questions are, 1) what was the precise version where
this behavior changed, 2) was the change intentional, and 3) if so,
*why*.

Imho, the default behavior should mimic MSO (the most popular office
package with the largest installed base, whether one likes it or not).

Cor? anyone? Should I just go file a bug?

Tanstaafl:

The earliest I have found that changed to pasting as a table is
OOo3.0.1. I may have the release notes archived somewhere.

This is impossible. Mail merge reads data from a registered Base file

regardless of any file formats.

For various reasons, spreadsheets are by far the worst choice for list

keeping. A most simple dBase file performs much better and can be edited

directly in the data source window without opening nor saving any

document at all.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How get LibreO-Base working?

2012-02-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think it's a classic case of something that is so nearly perfect and with
such huge potential and clever, uncompromising concept.  It's even more
frustrating than some broken heap of junk precisely because it's so close but
misses (in the fairly rare cases when it does miss).  Most people seem to have
no troubles with it but for a few it's like scratching finger-nails down a
black-board.

Probably not! What you are describing is clearly the use of cells of
a spreadsheet (Calc) document; I think we all know you can do this in
a spreadsheet. The questioner is asking instead about automatically
copying text between the cells of a table in a text (Writer) document.

Dear Tom,

We cannot insert the image and text into the original LibreOffice document, as
we receive the ready converted PDF files from the business users.
And our application (.NET exe version 3.5) does the insertion in the received
PDF files as per the business logic.

Kindly suggest any other solution/dll that can resolve the said issue.

We have also a lot of old WordPro-Files in my company.
Some of them get opened by LibreOffice, but most of them do not and report

So you still can't rely on this filter.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How get LibreO-Base working?

Hi Dan  :)
OpenJDK is also owned by Oracle but that might be mitigated by having a
community involved.  I'm not sure if normal java has a community too.  Ubuntu
10.04LTS has java 6_20 by default at the moment.  Perhaps you also have one of
the good (at least for LO) versions such as 6_21 or 6_22.

The creator of the course you gave a link to just emailed me moments before you
posted and said that is a back-up and the better site is

It looks a lot nicer!  Same content i guess but looks can count for a lot

Is this a "Windows" problem? I'm not having any problems using Base
with the Ubuntu O/S. My java is openjdk-6-jre. This java is supplied by
from Ubuntu's repositories. I don't know, but I suspect that this java
version can also be used for other Linux distributions.
This java's description: Full Java runtime environment - needed for
executing Java GUI and Webstart programs. Using Hotspot JIT. The
packages are built using the IcedTea build support and patches from the
IcedTea project. (Maybe someone else understands this jargon.)
I wonder about some of the comments that have been made in this
thread. What I do know is that OOo 3.3 (or perhaps earlier) contained a
method to disable the Base Wizard. The word at the time was that there
were large companies wanting to control who in their company could
create .odb files (database document files) at work. These companies
were told what configuration file had to be changed from what  to what.
I realize that the security holes found in java has been a
problem. I seem to have seen somewhere that the java based upon the
IcedTea project does not have these holes.
I use Base for embedded databases that are flat, relational, one
that is a combination of flat and relational I have one .odb file that
links to a spreadsheet. They all work.
"Base Tutorial: From Newbie to Advocate in a one, two... three!" by
Mariano Casanova
written for OOo (publication date: August 2010. This is a fairly
sophisticated application created using Base.
Here is a link that is a Base Tutorial which is a online course for
Base. The estimated time required to go through this tutorial is more
than 60 hours.

http://www.fhi.rcsed.ac.uk/rbeaumont/virtualclassroom/chap8/libreoffice_base.html

In other words, I think there is more to Base than I seem to be
reading in this and other threads.

Hi :)
There are Mac and GNu&Linux connectors for MySql / MariaDb but not a Windows

Hi again,
First Tom:
I will try. Let us see what comes from the deeps of my mind and if I can find
some old projects to investigate so I can give an understandable answer - I'm a
little afraid that not.

Andreas:
Thank you for very interesting info. Please note that I am talking from a
consumers point of view in no way professional in databases. When I worked with
MSAccess I plainly saw it as a program - a tool - and tried to learn how to get
it producing the needed results, how to do data input - data mixing and
processing - data output.
The background philosophy and programming details were of no interest - I did
not even know to ask. Knowing could have been of help.
I am aware of what you say about "real" relational dbs;  my intention is to do
the ODBC connection (or JDBC if necessary) between LO-Base and (e.g.) MySQL but
if I'm correct the LO-Base (32bit) must first start working stable with or
without a JRE.
That's why I now put my question "how" to your admirable community.
Best regards

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How get LibreO-Base working?

2012-02-01 Thread Pertti Rönnberg

Hi again,
First Tom:
I will try. Let us see what comes from the deeps of my mind and if I can
find some old projects to investigate so I can give an understandable
answer - I'm a little afraid that not.

Andreas:
Thank you for very interesting info. Please note that I am talking from
a consumers point of view in no way professional in databases. When I
worked with MSAccess I plainly saw it as a program - a tool - and tried
to learn how to get it producing the needed results, how to do data
input - data mixing and processing - data output.
The background philosophy and programming details were of no interest -
I did not even know to ask. Knowing could have been of help.
I am aware of what you say about "real" relational dbs; my intention is
to do the ODBC connection (or JDBC if necessary) between LO-Base and
(e.g.) MySQL but if I'm correct the LO-Base (32bit) must first start
working stable with or without a JRE.

That's why I now put my question "how" to your admirable community.
Best regards
Pepe

In other words, I think there is more to Base than I seem to be
reading in this and other threads.

Its really pity because I think the usability of databases is underrated; quite
ordinary people should have plenty of use of databases in their every day life
if there only were free, easy installed, easy customized templates and some
efforts on marketing. I just got a fancy idea that LO-/OO-Base could be that
user-friendly solution.
Anyway, I still feel it worth trying to see if there should be a way to get my
32bit LO-Base working!

I agree. I am a 72 years "oldtimer" with a pure interest to keep up. When in
office until about 10 years ago I worked quite a lot with MSAccess and VBA &
macros and got somewhat familiar with SQL too. MSAccess alone was enough for
quite complicated projects with informative forms/reports and analyses.
So now it is not the MySQL/SQLite, it is the PHP-language and getting the
MySQL/PHP/Apache combination working that I feel uncomfortable - I also have
tried WASP.
Again - thanks and all the best!

And we all know why one must not use the built-in HSQLDB for productive
databases. The so called "Base document" with its built-in HSQLDB is the
most horrible face-palm feature since OOo 2.0.

And Calc for reports is OK, much as is Writer, but for anything a bit

I hardly ever use any macros at all. I simply use Calc's database ranges
with registered data sources as they are intended to be used.
Without a single line of macro code I open a document through a
hyperlink button on a form, confirm a dialog to refresh unsaved import
ranges and get a brand new collection of nicely formatted reports and
charts.

Personally, I'd love to be able to say, you get a great and easy to use
db reporting engine without Java in LO, but that is simply not the case
at the moment.

Calc provides all kinds of calculations and charting based on
dynamically changing import ranges (much better than with spreadsheet
data). Data pilots provide a second type of database report.
Things do simply *work* with Calc as report engine. If things really
*work*, I don't care too much about the perfect look.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LWP documents

2012-02-01 Thread Paul D. Mirowsky

KeyView for Lotus is a WordPro document viewer.

It is probably Windows only, but might work under WINE if you are on linux.
NOTE: originally designed for Win95/3.1 (google to find out more)

ftp://ftp.lotus.com/pub/lotusweb/product/smartsuite/

Download file: Kvlotus.exe

Check that it will work with your documents and that they will look
correct when printed.

If they do, output files as PDF as they are for reference only.
DO NOT GET RID OF LWP ORIGINALS.The day may come when that import
filter will become totally correct.

If you can write script, do a directory crawl with print attribute to pdf.

Hope this helps.

PS: Google docs imports PDF and export ODF.

This is impossible. Mail merge reads data from a registered Base file

For various reasons, spreadsheets are by far the worst choice for list

First, check that you do actually have the filters installed.
If you do a File > Open, do you see LWP in the list of available

Second, the filters are not perfect, even when they are installed.
Many LWP documents do not open correctly, if at all, especially if you

cannot install his Lotus WordPro. However, he wants to be able to

"new feature" for3.3 I was just at the LibreOffice web site and since my
posting of this question, now the ability to read Lotus WordPro
documents is no longer there for 3.4.5, as well as being able to read
other types of documents. However, under the new features of 3.3 IS the
ability to read Lotus WordPro documents. So I downloaded the provided
sample. LibreOffice read that sample fine, but still won't read true
LWP documents. I used 3.3 and downloaded and installed 3.4.5

I've no problem opening most lwp files in 3.3.3, 3.4.5, 3.5RC2 (linux).
However when I examine the files in a hex editor I see that they are
LWP7 versions. Samples that I tried (all work):

No problem, I didn't feel you were complaining, we just need to try and
get to the bottom of the problem.

But... we don't want to convert the copied cells into an Impress Table
when pasting them, we want them to be an embedded 'spreadsheet', that
when double-clicked, allows you to edit it as if it was a spreadsheet.
This is how it used to work a long time ago - and how Microsoft Office
works by default.

I don't know which version/update changed this...

I'll have to find an example spreadsheet/Presentation that causes this
problem and file a bug and upload them to it...

Now, I guess the questions are, 1) what was the precise version where
this behavior changed, 2) was the change intentional, and 3) if so, *why*.

Imho, the default behavior should mimic MSO (the most popular office
package with the largest installed base, whether one likes it or not).

Cor? anyone? Should I just go file a bug?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LWP documents

2012-02-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Time to post a bug-report then, or use the existing one which seems to have got
a bit muddled.

In wikipedia i found there is apparently a LotusWord viewer, see bottom of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Lotus_Word_Pro
but if that only helps convert 1 doc at a time then it's pretty useless.
Perhaps the link might be useful for the bug-report?

According to IBM their files 'should' open with no problems in MS Word
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/smartsuite/wordprofeatures.html
but i never believe anything big companies say until after trying it.  It's bad
enough that a free product fails to deliver what it has apparently promised but
paying too much money to buy something that also doesn't work would be the
icing on the cake.

If you are not able to try opening a lwp file in Word feel free to send me a
private email with a copy of one of the documents that doesn't work in LO as i
might be able to try it in Word 2007 and Word 2010 later today or tomorrow.  I
still think it would be better to let the devs have a copy of at least 1 file
that doesn't work as there is far more chance of them fixing the filter.  If it
does open in MS Word then there might be a way to convert the documents in
large batches.

Regards from
Tom :)

First, check that you do actually have the filters installed.
If you do a File > Open, do you see LWP in the list of available import filters
?

Second, the filters are not perfect, even when they are installed. Many LWP
documents do not open correctly, if at all, especially if you have tables
and/or inserted images in them. I have found that the filters only manage to
successfully import the most simple of documents. Things with footers and
headers tend to be misinterpreted or not represented.
