[libreoffice-users] Printing in 3.5.2.2

2012-04-29 Thread Bob Melson
Just installed 3.5.2.2 as an update in FreeBSD (8.3, AMD64 and i386) and
am unable to configure printers following the LibreOffice help page for
installing printers under unix. As well, there is no default printer.

Following the help page instructions, I have gone to
install-path/libreoffice/program and have attempted to run spadmin.
Doing so, I receive an error message (message panel) telling me that no
printers can be installed because the file system is read-only, but no
indication what filesystem it's referring to. So, where do I look or,
better yet, what do I do to get my printers configured?

I've been told, informally, that LO has gone from supporting lpd/lp
printing to a cups-only regime. If so, I suggest that this is a major
blunder since cups is not appropriate for many situations - small
installations with few users, desktops with attached printers, etc.
What's the truth here?

Default styles are there forever, you can't delete them.

Though, I encourage you to use them before any personal style creation,
because

-- the stock styles get internationally supported

eg: EN Text Body is FR Corps de texte
- This is understadable by whoever opens the document, English speaker
or French native.

-- any user opening you docs will be able to have their own style
settings which will automagically adapt your docs to their taste.

eg: you setup the Text Body paragraph style to use Liberation Sans font
fo your document. If you pass it over to me, where I have the same style
with the Liberation Serif font setup, I can read *your* document with
*my* settings.

Styles are the pillar or OOo/LibO. Just because of this, I couldn't go
back to MSO. It is very important to grasp the styles principles and
learn their use. This knowledge brings a tremendous step in ease of
typing, document structuring and management.
Designing your own styles is of course possible -- and you'll have to do
so whenever the corresponding stock style doesn't exist -- but I
strongly insist on the use of the stock styles before any other attempt.

I agree it's too much work since you already have Office. But if you
provided such a file it might help others who don't (some because they
can't...) and the next time you try LibreOffice, it could already be fixed

Each new document is based on a document template. This template
contains a set of styles. For to get your own set of styles you have to
generate a document and save it as document template. You can made your
favorite template a default then.

Only in very few cases it is necessary to create own, independent
styles, but in most cases it is better to alter an existing styles to
contain the settings you need. Such changes do not effect other document
templates.

If you are indeed creating your presentation in Draw instead of Impress, the
easiest way is to copy and paste you Draw objects into Impress and then
simply Save As Microsot Powerpoint 97/2000/XP/2003.

Perhaps the first step is to get the Writer Guide from
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation. Since you are
interested in using styles in Writer, Download the ODT rather than the
PDF version. There are two chapters on styles that you should study, and
I think chapter 9 is also important. There also is a chapter on
templates that you should find useful.
At the bottom of the Styles and Formatting window is a drop down
list. One of the selections is Custom Styles. (The default setting is Automatic
for USA English.) Create your own styles, and select Custom from the
drop down list. You will only see the styles you created.
All of the user guides listed on that web page is written almost
exclusively with custom styles. Open the Writer Guide in LO, open the
Styles and Formatting window, and select Custom Styles from the drop
down list I mentioned. And if you want to see all of the custom styles,
click on the icons at the top of the window. From left to right, you
have Paragraph Styles, Character Styles, Page Styles, and List Styles.
The last two icons are Fill Format Mode (See Writer Guide), and New
Styles from Selection.
When I'm using Writer, I usually select Applied Styles from the
drop down list rather than Custom Styles. This allows me to find the
style I want easier. If I find that I need to use a custom style, I
select Custom Styles at the bottom and apply it. Then it appears in the
Applied Styles lists when I need it the next time.

Ok, no trouble.  Typically to test-drive a car you would have to do complicated
things like put the keys in the ignition, turn the key, use the pedals,

doesn't really count as a test drive and wont really help you turn right.

Hello,

Thank you for your quick responses.

I already tried to add a formula by clicking Insert - Object - Formula in
Writer, and I got the problem described in my original post. Here is a
screenshot of what I see in a Writer document after I do Insert - Object -
Formula:

http://imgur.com/HevWr

On the side there is also the Elements window, but there is NO Commands
window, nor any space for me to enter the markup. I also tried to look for
the small dotted area indicating a hidden window, but can't find it...

If I try to enter A =left[matrix{1 # 2 # 3 ## 4 # 5 # 6 ## 7 # 8 # 9}right]
directly into the formula box in the document, I get this:

http://imgur.com/ZBIns

I also already downloaded the LO Math guide, but it doesn't help. The
screenshot in the guide shows the LO Writer window split in half, where
the bottom half is for entering the markup. But again, as you can see in my
posted screenshots, there is no such place.

I am very confused, can you point me further in the right direction?

Thanks!

2012-04-29 Thread avamk
Hello,

Thank you so much for your quick replies.

Looks like the general idea is that one should use styles by modifying the
Default set.

However, as you mentioned the LO Writer guide itself uses almost all custom
styles not in the Default set.

I guess I will start by reading through the LO Writer guide's sections on
styles, thank you for pointing me in that direction!

Just out of curiosity, if I set up my styles in Writer, and save a document
as a *.docx file, then open it in Micro$oft Office, will the styles work
correctly?

Thanks again!

That is a nice suggestion for some users. But some companies have the USB
ports disabled (either in the OS or even physically) and some have the USB
ports enabled but a strict code where you are not allowed to execute other

The problem occurs with the numbering of graphics. What does this have
to do with applying custom styles? It is a function of the Insert

Looks like the general idea is that one should use styles by modifying the

However, as you mentioned the LO Writer guide itself uses almost all custom

I guess I will start by reading through the LO Writer guide's sections on

Just out of curiosity, if I set up my styles in Writer, and save a document

Are you sure about it? I would consider it rather bug than a feature.

If I set my document to use 8pt MS Comic Sans as a default text body font,
then I want my document to be mostly 8pt MS Comic Sans. If I send this

important to preserve any formatting applied by author.

Or maybe your comment applies only to documents created on base of default
Writer template? I have switched to my own default template years ago.

And yes, I know that if anyone wants to preserve formatting, then PDF is the
best choice. But sometimes you want to send editable document (Hybrid PDF does
not change anything, since it basically is ODT embedded into PDF, so any
remarks applied to ODT applies to Hybrid PDF as well).

2012-04-29 Thread Bob Melson
You want to use it, that's fine. I should probably have
said it's not necessary for all printing environments,
such as desktops with attached printer. CUPS adds a layer
of complexity to an otherwise simple installation - lpd/lp
just work. If that's not the case with you and CUPS
slides into place and works, great. Just remember, one
size does NOT fit all.

Well, ALL my printers, network and USB, have CUPS-based drivers. One
only has a CUPS-based driver and not any other type.

What is wrong with CUPS for the single user printing systems?

I use a Ubuntu desktop with 4 different printers, one being an older USB
printer. I have not had any problems with CUPS based drivers.

I still use 3.4.6, so I do not know about 3.5.2.2, but my question is
why CUPS is not appropriate for desktops with attached printers. Never
have heard this before and I have been using CUPS since Ubuntu 9.04.

Hi :)
I think if you open OpenOffice and go to
Tools - Options - Memory
and then untick the quickstarter tickbox then that should let you install LO.
There is a guide on how to install multiple instances of LibreOffice/OpenOffice

Hi,

I've been running Linux (Ubuntu) for 3+ years with nothing but cups

I might add that up until the 3.5.2.2 release, printing
worked just fine, right out of the box. LO detected the

Yep. I think if I knew what file system the error panel

accomplished. I've tried changing permissions on every

I've looked at the /var files for the printer queues and snooped

I have continuously upgraded from 3.3 to 3.5.2.2 and have no problems
with the LO printing using various Ubuntu derivatives and Windows 7.
Have you tried reinstalling the printer(s) in the OS? Maybe the printer
driver got corrupted. LO recognizes the installed printers properly.

The only time I had a printing problem was when the driver was corrupted
(do not know how it happened). Reinstalling the driver in the OS
corrected the problem.

 Hi :)
Ok, no trouble. Typically to test-drive a car you would have to do
complicated things like put the keys in the ignition, turn the key,
use the pedals, indicators and wheel and maybe the gear-stick. Just
opening the car door doesn't really count as a test drive and wont
 really help you turn right.

However, you can always give it another little go later :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing in 3.5.2.2

2012-04-29 Thread Bob Melson
This will sound snotty, I know, but I really don't mean it
to.

I'm very happy that those of you who successfully use CUPS on
your systems, whatever the o/s happens to be, can do so. But
that doesn't answer my basic question of how to get LO 3.5.2.2
to work as it did in previous releases, WITHOUT cups. Everything
else installed on my system, without exception, works with the
lpd/lp printer queues and daemon and, because it worked in the
same environment previously, there's no reason that LO should not.
If LO has changed to _require_ cups and only cups in order to
print, then I submit that that's a major blunder on the part of
the developers - not everybody who wants to run LO needs or
wants cups.

So, the questions are, first, is it true that LO REQUIRES cups since
the last release and, second, if not, how can I configure LO to
recognize and accept my printers? I have followed the printer
installation and setup guides provided by LO and regularly get
an error panel telling me that printers can't be installed because
the file system is read-only. I'm not told WHAT file system (which
might give me a chance to work around the problem if I knew), nor
is there any indication that there are any special requirements,
like cups, that must be met before I can configure my printers
in LO.

2012-04-29 Thread Bob Melson
Jay,

Thanks. I've built and re-built LO from source twice,
now, and continue to receive the same error. I don't
believe it's a corrupted driver that's causing the
problem and, in fact, may be nothing more than a minor
error in the source code that causes LO to behave as
it does. On the other hand, if it's true that LO
now requires cups, that needs to be stated in the
documentation (which it isn't, as far as I can tell).

 corrected the problem.

A long time ago I had to configure all the printers for OO/SO with
spadmin. Are you calling spadmin as root?
Yep. I think if I knew what file system the error panel
in spadmin is complaining about I might be able to get things
accomplished. I've tried changing permissions on every
directory in the path to the libreoffice executables, as well
as on the dot files in the root directory, all with no result.
I've looked at the /var files for the printer queues and snooped
in the cups directories here and there on system. All with no

The frustration is that everything else on the system recognizes lpd

[libreoffice-users] Re: Can't find Commands window in LO Math

2012-04-29 Thread avamk
I went to the bug report for
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46071 bug 46071 , and indeed
that was my problem.

The https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46071#c3 third comment by
Andy gave a macro that fixes this issue. In LibreOffice Writer, I clicked
on Tools - Macros - Organise Macros - LibreOffice Basic... In the
LibreOffice Basic Macros window, I added a New macro, then replaced the
default code that appears with the following:

Sub RemoveMathEquationWindowSettings
  p = CreateUnoStruct(com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue)
  p.Name = nodepath
  p.Value = /org.openoffice.Office.Views/Windows
  cp =
CreateUnoService(com.sun.star.configuration.ConfigurationProvider)
  ca = cp.createInstanceWithArguments(_
com.sun.star.configuration.ConfigurationUpdateAccess, Array(p))
  name = 30378
  If ca.hasByName(name) Then
ca.removeByName(name)
ca.commitChanges()
  End If
End Sub

Then I clicked on the button labeled Runs the first macro of the current
module to run the code, and the problem was fixed. Now I can see the
Commands window, and was able to enter the example matrix suggested by
Pedro.

Many thanks to Regina for pointing me to the bug report, Andy for posting
the macro, and Pedro for the example matrix! Hopefully this will be helpful
to others with this problem, and that the bug will be fixed soon.

I agree on the MS conversion uncertainty. But saving to PDF doesn't make any
sense. Unless you are doing a presentation that is so static that in fact
you didn't need Impress in the first place (you could do it in Writer),
converting to PDF is killing the presentation!

There is ONE advantage of exporting to PDF over using ODP or exporting to
PPT(X): PDF is the only file format that LibreOffice manages to embed fonts
into. And that could be important for a designer's presentation ;)

Hi :)
Have you tried the Forums/Mailing-Lists for whichever version of BSD you are
using?  You can usually find an appropriate forum from
http://distrowatch.com
or/and it might be good to contact the LO devs
http://www.libreoffice.org/developers-2/

I think there might be problems with trying to compile the official source code
in BSD.  I think a few people in the BSD community did port the code to BSD.

Tom,

I'm pretty sure I just went through the install in a normal fashion. I
didn't specify anything strange.

Actually it is all my spreadsheets that have column type charts.

I'm kind of busy right now, but if I can... maybe I'll try to cleanse
out one of them and post it on the board.

It just seems kind of strange that a column report would show up in LO
as a line instead of a column. Seems like a bug in LO.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing in 3.5.2.2

2012-04-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
MAybe the easiest way to handle this is for you to post a bug-report
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
and then install the 3.4.6 and stick with that one for a while.  There seems to
be less problems with it generally anyway.

Tom :)

I might add that up until the 3.5.2.2 release, printing
worked just fine, right out of the box.  LO detected the
system printers, allowed additional printers to be added
and configured .. in short, all was right wit the world.
With 3.5.2.2, however, SOMETHING has changed, and for the
worst.  A wise man once said, if it ain't broke, don't fix
it.  It wasn't broke but it's been fixed.

All with no
 result.

The frustration is that everything else on the system recognizes lpd
and plays nicely in that environment.  It's ONLY LO that fails to
detect any printers/queues and, because of that, does not allow
printing.  If this is because it requires cups, then, IMNSHO, it's
a gross error of planning and implementation that needs to be
 rectified.

I've been told, informally, that LO has gone from supporting lpd/lp
printing to a cups-only regime.  If so, I suggest that this is a major

[libreoffice-users] Unable to start my newly installed LibreOffice v3.5.2 programs.

2012-04-29 Thread Ant
Hello.

I just uninstalled old OpenOffice (OO) v3.3.0 and then installed a new
LibreOffice v3.5.2 into my old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine.
However, none of its programs will start. I see the splash screen and
then it (soffice.bin) exits. No errors I saw. What's the problem? OO was
working fine right before I uninstalled it.

Thank you in advance. :)

no rush Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc chart question

2012-04-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There is no rush.  It would just be nice to find out what has gone wrong but as
you point out at this point it's better for you to keep using MS Office until
there is a better time for you for finding out what went wrong.

 HI :)
No-one else seems to be able to replicate the problem you are having.
There only seems to be 1 document affected.  Perhaps the document is
corrupted somehow.  Maybe inexperience with LO led you into doing
something weird during install or with the document.  Who knows?

  Regards from
  Tom :)

Thanks for the offer, but I think that is too much work.  It was just
  a test
drive and LibreOffice failed.  I'll just stick with Office.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing in 3.5.2.2

2012-04-29 Thread Bob Melson
Tom,

Thanks for the suggestion.

LO 3.5.2.2 is in the official FreeBSD ports tree and
is my source for the source. I've contacted the FBSD
LO maintainer and have filed a bug report with FBSD.

I'm just now getting ready to file a bug report with
LO, so we'll see what comes of _that_.

 Hi :)
Have you tried the Forums/Mailing-Lists for whichever version of BSD you are
using?? You can usually find an appropriate forum from
 http://distrowatch.com
or/and it might be good to contact the LO devs
 http://www.libreoffice.org/developers-2/

I think there might be problems with trying to compile the official source
code in BSD.? I think a few people in the BSD community did port the code to
 BSD.?

 Jay,

Thanks.? I've built and re-built LO from source twice,
now, and continue to receive the same error.? I don't
believe it's a corrupted driver that's causing the
problem and, in fact, may be nothing more than a minor
error in the source code that causes LO to behave as
it does.? On the other hand, if it's true that LO
now requires cups, that needs to be stated in the
documentation (which it isn't, as far as I can tell).
