[libreoffice-users] LO crash switching from page view
Hallo, please confirm my observation: Create a writer document with first page consisting of paragraph marks, half of them hard formatted hidden, on 2nd page single letter i.e. A. Switching to page view shows the A in the middle of a single page, when switching back to normal edit mode LO crashes. Re: [libreoffice-users] Automatic sizing of documents in single window
Hi, I have a question in that context: How does LO (writer) determines the window size while opening a file? I know, that one can set the page size and found, that LO stores in some way the window size of a file for display. However, this is overridden when I run LO in command line mode (for printing, translation etc in a bash script). Thereafter all files newly openend in a distorted (small) window. I tried to manipulate the registrymodifications.xcu However, in regular intervals its overridden by someone else (LO?). Thus, every time I open a file, I have to change the window size manually. Re: [libreoffice-users] Automatic sizing of documents in single window
Hi :) Please, when replying do a Reply to all or Group reply or Reply to list. Thanks for trying to work-around the 'problem' of me getting duplicates of your replies but i really don't mind getting duplicates. It's easy to hit the delete key. I think we are supposed to delete-out individual's addresses from the To and CC fields but sometimes that means the person that posted doesn't get any of the replies because they are not properly subscribed to the mailing list. It's easier just to send to the list and everyone and let them quickly hit their delete key when they see the same message got through twice. The mailing lists used to have a really clever way of handling all this but various people prefer it this way around :( The rest of us have just learned to live with it. Sorry about all that!! It should be possible to Cascade any windows that are in a group on your taskbar surely? Don't you just right-click on the 'button' on the taskbar and select Cascade? Win Xp and earlier going back to Win98 had something like that didn't they? Vista and Win7 too? So, is this problem only happening on Win8? Also which version of LibreOffice are you using? If you have any trouble at all with 4.1.0 then just uninstall it and go back to 4.0.4. That 3rd digit show how many service packs the branch has had so about .4 becomes very very stable and predictable. Most people will find even beta-testing versions plenty stable enough but some will find odd things that don't quite work for them, in which case just go back to the stable branch. In MSOffice, I had the option of selecting all or some of these and having them tile or cascade in the window (using the MS terms.) That's what I'm trying to replicate. Right now, I'm doing this manually, and anything of three kills a great deal of time. I may be out of luck or have to wait for another version to roll out. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: 2 news clippings of interest
Hi :) What may be trivial to one person is a big deal to another. Even just 'trivial' changes have involved reading, understand, possibly translating and then re-typing stuff that is wy beyond the ken of most of us. A major part of the code clean-up has been taking out comments some of which are still there even though the code they were commenting about may have been dropped a decade ago. The download size of LibreOffice is under 70% the size it was when the projects forked. Smaller, lighter, faster might be trivial to some but many of us really appreciate the reduction in size and increase in speed. Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing problems
You want to get all of the printers to work no matter what applications print to them? You have how many PCs on your network? In another post you state there are 20 printers configured. So far, I do not know of any easy way to setup 5, 10, or 20 users to have the same settings for LibreOffice, and add over 10 printers in the mix makes it worse. How many of these printers have a display panel build in? I know that you can set the default paper types there. But you still need to setup the LO application to default to the printer. Is there any way you can setup a default .config/libreoffice hidden folder and place it on every PC running LO. If you create one that has no user info in it, you should be able to copy it to the other Debian-based PCs. Windows users would be harder. To be honest, I have only about 6 systems configured for, currently, three network printers. Two systems are dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows laptops. But it seems you are wanting to set up many printers to the Postscript instead of PDF on several computers. Sorry, but there is no easy way to do this. As I said, you can use the LO Printer Administration application listed in the same menu as LibreOffice. That will be the easiest way to work on all of the printers that that computer has access to. Click on the printer and the Properties button. Go to the Device option and change the printer language type of the selected printer. That is the only way I know how to do it easily for all the printers that that computer has access to. Then if you did not set up any information in the Tools / Options / LibreOffice / User Data that is only for that system, then you may have the generic .config/libreoffice information that could be copied to the other Debian-based computers you are using on your network. By replacing the original file with this generic one you should have all of the systems setup the same way. The only issue might be if you are running both 32-bit and 64-bit Debian-based systems on your network. Of course I am assuming that you are not the only one on the network with 20 printers to do your bidding. [libreoffice-users] Re: Printing problems - US Letter / A4
In an Ubuntu system, the default papersize is held in the /etc/papersize file. If you set the language to say US, papersize can be set to US Letter even though the printer default is actually A4. Similarly an English system in America can be set to A4 although the actual printer is US Letter. It is the difference between the actual Language setting and the physical printer. I would always advise you check this setting before setting the LibreOffice printer defaults. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Printing problems - US Letter / A4
So Peter If the French person went into that /etc/papersize file and made sure it was listed as A4, then all of the printer drivers in her Debian [or Debian-based] system will automatically default to A4? Will LO then default to A4 for the default paper sizes of the printer and document? Also, have you found any place where you pick up using Postscript instead of PDF for the default printer language used for all the printers connected to that system? Like I stated before, I have only 3 active network printers, and one that is almost never used, attached to my network and about a half-dozen Ubuntu/Windows systems to setup to the Postscript printer language over PDF. So I have it easy. The OP has about 20 printers and who-knows the number of systems attached to the network. There has to be an easier way than what I do to make sure the printers use Postscript. On 07/23/2013 04:17 PM, Peter Maunder wrote: In an Ubuntu system, the default papersize is held in the /etc/papersize file. Similarly an English system in America can be set to A4 although the actual printer is US Letter. It is the difference between the actual Language setting and the physical printer. I would always advise you check this setting before setting the LibreOffice printer defaults. RE: [libreoffice-users] Conflicts?
Yes if one or both are fully installed (as opposed to /A administrative installs) they will interfere in subtle ways. Actions to mitigate: 1) Disable the Quickstarter for both during installation -- the TDF LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice versions will conflict--best if both are off. Done from AppWiz.cpl and a modify installation of both. 2) Also, only one or the other should have the Windows Explorer Integration enabled (it provides a thumbnail view of ODF documents) in Desktop or Thumbnail views in Windows Explorer (Desktop and other folder views). Personally I also leave that unchecked when installing. 3) Finally, if using the release rather than development builds. The Windows registry will be written with file associations--the two programs should coexist to open a file type, but only one can be set as the default for any particular ODF or MS Office format. [libreoffice-users] LO 4 install deletes 3.6
In an attempt to compare the latest LO and AOO offerings, today I installed both LO 4.0.4 and AOO 4.0 on my Win7 machine. Until now, I have been happily using LO 3.6.6.2, having previously tried an earlier release in the LO 4 series. When I previously installed LO 4, I noticed that it seemed to uninstall my previous version of LO 3.6. After encountering some problems with LO 4, I uninstalled it and reinstalled LO 3.6. On the prior occasion, I just assumed that, when installing LO 4, I had inadvertently clicked some option to uninstall the old 3.6. So, today, when I installed LO 4, I was very careful to make sure that I did not check any box indicating my desire to uninstall LO 3.6.6.2. Nevertheless, LO 4 installed and, once again, my installation of LO 3.6.6.2 disappeared. Does anyone know if this is intentional behavior? It has happened to me now twice, and I’m 90% certain that it was not due to anything I did. If it is intentional, I find it most offensive. I can’t believe the TDF developers would be so presumptuous as to decide for me that I no longer want LO 3.6 on my system. This is the type of “let us think for you” behavior I would expect from MS, not from a FOSS project. btw, AOO 4.0 installed quite nicely *next to* AOO 3.4.1, and I am able to run both programs. Sorry, TDF, but on this one I have to give AOO a +1. Virgil, Not sure how far down the rabbit hole you'd like to go, but the simple truth is that full installs of LibreOffice 3.x and LibreOffice 4.x use identical components of Microsoft Windows registry and system paths and are mutually exclusive. One can happily run multiple versions of LibreOffice (or a mix of LibreOffice and OpenOffice), but they will not be fully integrated with Microsoft Windows OS--and at any given time only one can be fully integrated with the Windows OS. Recognizing that this is the normal use case--that is how the LibreOffice installer behaves by default. If you need it to do something else you have to do more than click on the installer. And, fyi, the Apache OpenOffice installer behaves exactly the same, but is less functional in migrating user settings and supporting extensions. Re: [libreoffice-users] LO 4 install deletes 3.6
I think Win7 may think LO 4.x is the upgrade to 3.x and decide that to install the newer version it must uninstall the older one. I have noticed that with a lot of packages lately. Win7 deletes any previous versions of the software before the newer one is installed. To be honest For most users, they would want that to happen. The average user does not want multiple versions of a package installed on a Windows system. So, I would say that Win7 or even Win8, might thing it is a proper thing to do, uninstall old before new is installed to avoid package conflicts or mis-matched DLL files, etc., etc.. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Unable to change url for persona settings
Yes 4.1.?.? the persona feature is broke. You can only change it or edit it by doing it manually by adding the jpg files to the .config/libreoffice/4/user/gallery/persona sub-dirs. If the persona sub-dir does not exist than just create it and dump the jpg there. Also you will have to manually edit the registrymodifications.xcu file. This just an xml file. Look for the 2 lines that have Persona and the second one has PersonaSettings after oor:name=. You will want the 2nd line, horizontal scroll to the type valueand type in the name of the jpg file (ie 3.jpg;bas5.jpg;#d5f3fa;#00 is what is in mine for star trek image.) I got the mentioned values when I tried coping my libreoffic config folders from 4.0.4.2 into my 4.1.?.? folders and found that it worked. I found the difference based on the comments in the 2 bugs that Peter had mentioned. Once I changed the new files I switched back. The xcu files are very different in size so I'm not sure if keeping the older version in place may disallow some new feature from working properly. RE: [libreoffice-users] Conflicts?
Steve, Well yes, but Windows has completely different application configurations for the Launchers on OS X, where manipulation of each programs .APP and some Plist values. And there are major differences in launcher setup with info.plist and each applications .app file when moving between OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8--indications are that won't even run on 10.9. And of course the mix of DE and application packaging on the Linux flavors is an interesting mix as well. So the three primary OS environments for configuring LibreOffice are different enough that we can't generalize across the OSs even though the code base is mostly in common. That is because installation/configuration is where things diverge the most. Windows is an ugly beast. Linux Kernels and Darwin have reasonable methods for the most part. Although Unity leaves me scratching my head on occasion.
