did you try Tools->Options->LibreOffice->View and change the scaling of the UI?

> [...] It's a loose compilation of answers [...]

Thanks for your compilation, David.

However - what are your ideas about consequences?

To me, it seems rather difficult to improve the situation as whatever the
idea is, it is always an awful lot of work to do. Therefore, the only
promising strategy seems kind of "crowdsourcing" the work i.e. make it as
easy as possible to contribute so that many many people can collaborate.

The historical situation was to have the local F1 help, which is rather
difficult to manage and nearly impossible for normal people to contribute.
So the folks keen to contribute created the User Guides as supplement which
is much easier to contribute to.

Nowadays, with all the collaborative internet possibilities, one could think
of a better linking of the two by creating a "combined help", i.e. a wiki
help which allows easy contribution on the one hand but is also context
sensitive like the local help. This has been started, but is far from being
functional: The wikihelp nicely reacts to F1 if no localhelp is installed,
but contribution is not yet implemented. So we have to live with this "not
yet" status for another couple of years, I fear.

That's the way I see it. Curious about your improvement proposals.

very nice question :)

To me, "user friendly" would match following criteria:

+ complete
+ up to date
+ online
+ with option to download and use locally
+ context sensitive
+ multi language
+ user commentable
+ with option to hide comments
+ with "helpful/not helpful" rating enabled
+ with option to show top rated comments first

and, for community/contribution interested users:

+ collaborativly created (like a wiki)
(which is different from comment function!)
+ nice2have: views/downloads counter

The best example AFAIK is php documentation [1] but it's written by techies
for techies (aka freak2freak), whilest LibO has (hopefully) a lot of
non-freak users.

:-(

I understand both:

- Andreas, who is a high-level Libre/OpenOffice expert and really needs
exact and non-distracting communication

and

- Tom who is a genius in association and cross-connection but with a high
percentage of (sometimes incredibly wrong) guessing

Personally, I'm in favour of Andreas' way of communication as I also get
distracted too easy by Tom's frequent associations.

But as far as I perceive it, a bunch of subscribers do appreciate Tom's
friendly tone, even if the contents is sometimes not very helpful.

Does anybody know a good solution for this dilemma?

The perhaps clearest way would be to set up a list policy, which says that
only short answers are allowed, or that only solution suggestions are
welcome, which the writer has tested himself - or something similar. But
IMHO it's absolutely not easy/trivial to define exactly what is welcome and
what not.

A different idea could be to split the list into a "first" and "second"
level support, with diffrerent list policies (e.g. in list 2 only
to-the-point-communication, no distraction allowed).

Another idea could be to ask Andreas to try to ignore Tom's messages, and
ask Tom to try to restrain himself. Does this sound helpful?

Nino

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Sort Bug ?

2015-03-27 Thread Nino Novak
Pertti, all,

1) This seems to be an old known problem (see e.g. [1])

2) I just tested 3.4.1 (LibO+AOO) - its already present there, so IMHO it's
inherited from OOo

3) an easy Workaround exists (go over Data > Sort, choose proper column
label Options)

So IMO the next questions are,
- how important is this bug?
- is there general agreement about a default behavior / column label
recognition algorithm?

Then the bug could be pushed to a higher prio / dev visibility.

Sorry, I'm not a geologist, so "a geological time-line" does not say

What do your cells contain? Could you give an example?

See, you have your spreadsheet in mind but I/we do not know how it looks

You could also upload a screenshot somewhere and post the link here, this

The main advantage is its age: it's more mature; it has been in use for a
longer time; people know it better; more questions have been answered in all
the support forums etc.

You see, the main problem is not having two branches, it's having two
branches which do not differ too much - just half a year. Therefore, both
are rather "fresh", there is no "really mature" version, at least not in the
public.

So the thing to really complain about is the lack of a really mature (2-3-4
years or more) version! Therefore, all the bug fixing etc does not really
improve the stability of the software as branches end their lifetime too
soon after receiving their last bugfix update.

I'm not sure what the effects would be if there was a Long Time Support
version. Maybe, everybody would switch to this LTS verison and bug reporting
would decrease dramatically. But maybe also, that peoples' satisfachtion
would grow considerably and therefore also commitment and loyalty. Who knows?

In a first step I'd very much like the community to decrease the release
frequeny to once a year instead of every 6 months.

By clicking on the graphics you come to its upload page with all former

exactly.

Maybe it's about the usage of the word "stable".

Charles uses it in kind of a "strict sense" in software development: a
software may be called stable if no crasher bugs are reported/open. (I don't
know the exact actual definition in LibreOffice as I did not find it
explicitly written somewhere). Florian simply assumes that the state
"stable" is reached after the 6th bugfix release. So their definitions
seemingly differ and it might be considered helpful to work on a common
definition. But there is no doubt that both try to use it "according to
definition" (or presumable definition).

You seem to use it in an undefined way, kind of a "common sense". Which is
also right, but - as is the nature of undefined terms - does not reflect the
product's state but rather your (or someone else's) expectations.

So, strictly spoken, Charles/Florian are right. But commonly spoken, you are
right.

There is additionally the problem of comparing two differend kinds of fruit:
it's difficult to compare the maturity of oranges and apples. Strictly
spoken, you cannot say, this orange is more mature than this apple. In this
analogy, every minor branch *is* a different fruit as it has different
features from other minor branches :-)
Therefore one simply shouldn't compare them regarding "stableness". It will
always stay an opinion showing that the person uttering it does not really
understand what she is talking about ;-)

The younger one (fresh) has been forked later from the master development
branch. Therefore it obviously has more features.

But as it is younger, it is less "mature" than the earlier (still) branch.

If you look into each branch separately, the branch goes through the well
known states (alpha, beta, RC, final) for its first release (the x.y.0), but
then keeps iterating through several additional (bugfix) releases, from
x.y.1 to x.y.6 in most cases. So each branch individually gains increasingly
bugfreeness during its individual

Jon,

suggestions are welcome here, but this is a users' list, so don't expect to
get developer lever answers.

OTOH, it's sometimes good to hear what other users think about such suggestions.

The formal way to propose enhancements is Bugzilla[1]. As Bugzilla is a
devs' tool and thus a bit hard to use for normal people, you might prefer to
file your proposals through the Submission Assistant[2], which is a simpler
interface to Bugzilla.

Oh sorry, this was a translation problem: the German word for "section" can
be the same as for "range", so here I rather meant "range": If you go over
"Insert - Manual break" you can create a *range* of pages with a certain
style (not a section which indeed is something different).

Isn't what you describe exactly creating sections (even if you call it "page

Interesting question/need.

The only idea I have is to have a common master address database which
in turn is then used by the different (mail) applications.

It might also be possible to "combine" the different back ends into one
front end. But not without major programming efforts, as far as I can
judge. Curious what other people think.

However, in a first effort, I'd try to get rid of the "Collected
Addresses" data in Thunderbird by merging them into my Personal
Addressbook and accordingly changing the destination under Preferences >
Composition > Addressing - "Automatically add ..."
But it's only a workaround.

For me it's just

1. (Left-) Click a row/column header to mark it,

2. Click just somewhere inside the marked column (into the data area,
not the header) and hold/drag it to the desired destination

3. Release it.

What happens when you try this?

You can e.g. create & insert a variable called "User Field":

1) Write your text
2) Place Cursor at the desired first occurence of the variable.
3) Insert > Fields > Other > Tab "Variables"
4) Select Type "User Field", Format "Text", Name "MyName" (or similar,
some reserved names like "Name" are not allowed), Value "[EDIT ME]"
5) Click "Insert" button (or arrow) but don't close the Field Dialog.
6) Move the cursor to the next occurence of the variable
7) Double click on the variable in the "Selection" pane to insert a new
instance

Repeat #6 - 7 until you are done.

Save the document.

To change the variable's content (= its value) you can double click any
one of the instances and edit the Value field in the Field Dialog.

If you don't see any, you can play with the toggles in
View > Field Shadings or View > Field Names.

Bugzilla is a bug database. So what you have to do is filing a bug with
a description which allows developers (and QA people) to reproduce your
bug reliably. There is a detailed Howto in the wiki[1]. However, it's a
rather extensive description trying to cover most eventualities, so if
you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask them e.g. here.

Without being a writer myself, I somehow understand your needs.

What I do presently is using a mind mapping software (I use freemind[1]
for that) for arranging and rearranging stuff. This works quite to my
satisfaction but when finished, the whole composition has to be
transferred to LibreOffice: this also works quite well but then it
remains static from this point on. So if I want to re-arrange it, I have
to do it again in freemind.

It's a workaround.

Yepp.

Did you try a newer version?

I don't know if this problem is caused by LibreOffice itself or by the
underlying window manager (or by a bad interaction between the two), but
it's always worth testing a newer LibreOffice version. I'd prefer a
Vanilla version from www.libreoffice.org to a distribution's version,
because the latter in most cases has been slightly modified.

The closest bug description I found is
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68168
which happens to be also occuring on Linux.

And the CSV files, do they happen to be huge?

Oh, I think here I draw the wrong conclusion: If the field numbers are

Not quite.

If - as I understand your description - you have the following design:

+---+---+
 :
stub1 : ticket1
 :
+---+---+
 :
stub2 : ticket2
 :

stub3 : ticket3
 :
+---+---+
 :
stub4 : ticket4
 :
+---+---+

and you put your ticket number fields sequentially from top left to
bottom right, i.e. first into stub1, then into ticket1, then stub2, then
ticket2, and so on, then the first "Next Record" field has to be put
after the number field in ticket1, but before the number field in stub2,
the second one after ticket2/before stub3, and so on. So number fields
in tickets 1, 2, and 3 should be followed by a Next Record field, while
in ticket 4 it should not.

At least that's how it works for me.

> and then, as it will be a new page, the numbering will continue in sequence
> until we reach the end of the records. Is that correct

Yes - it's sufficient to design just one page, the following pages
should be created automatically the same way if data are left over after
the first page has been printed.

then the "Next Record" fields seem to not work, see below.

By default, these fields are just rendered as those thin lines. To make
full field names visible, you must press Strg+F9 (or toggle "View >
Field Names"). When done, the fields should look something like "Next
record:FileName.TableName" (where FileName and TableName are the file
and table name you chose in steps 1-3). Here is where you can control if
there are any errors. It's a bit boresom as subsequent fields do not
have any space or delimiter in between, so if you by mistake inserted
multiple fields, it will look a bit confusing. But you can simply delete
a field, then you will know where it had started and ended :-)

Note that the field name must contain the correct database and table
names to work properly. If it does not, delete it and insert it anew.
Take care to have the correct data source open (I always leave it open
in the F4 subwindow during the whole procedure).

After making field names visible as described above, you should
understand how it works.

You've almost reached the goal, there's only one small step left.
Now don't give up, this will not help reducing frustration.
Only if you succeed, you will get satisfaction ;-)

What reminds me to ask you, which version of LibreOffice you are using
and on which Operating System - just to exclude that you use a buggy
version.

so this looks to me like people have contributed to a site which took

Two thoughts:

1 - Does the owner sufficently understand the public need for high

How I'd do it (it's from memory, so bear with me for little glitches):

1. Set up a Calc spreadsheet and enter a header (e.g."number") and the
desired numbers (1 to 150 or even 001 to 150 by chosing a custom number
format with two preceeding zeroes) into a column

2. design a nice text page with all 4 tickets in it (you could also try
going with labels but for just 4 tickts per page I'd rather go with
copy&paste instead of fumbling with labels)

3. assign the spreadsheet from #1 as data source (for later use as
mailmerge, from memory: File > New > Database > connect to existing >
spreadsheet)

4. on your above designed ticket page, press F4 to open the spreadsheet
from above as data source

5. enter (simply drag&drop) column header field into the appropriate
place in stub and repeat this for the ticket

6. after every SECOND field enter "next record" switch (Insert > field >
others > database > next record) but NOT after the fourth ticket (as a
page break always triggers a next record switch)

7. Print as mailmerge (or form letter or whatever it's called) into 1
document

8. review the document and if necessary correct&repeat some of the above
steps

9. print the merged documents,

10. enter perforation (I use a sewing machine, works perfectly if you
use a thin needle and adjust the step width appropriately)

11. cut tickets apart :-)

Enjoy learning ;-)

[libreoffice-users] Re: Does LO Writer converts (internally) any format other than .odt to .odt when it wants to open such files?

> ... does LO Writer
> converts files to .odt when it tries to open them or it can directly
> work with formats other than .odt like .doc and .docx?

I think no software "works" directly with a file format. Files are
"frozen data streams", they are static. Any data bits from the file get
"imported" into the software which stores them into its internal
variables, arrays, objects, and more, then it works with them and after
that stores the result again in the file.

So there is always some kind of import "translation" of data when a
software "opens" (i.e. reads) the file (resp. export translation when
writing it).

However, in the "native" format (as is odf for LibreOffice), this
translation mostly goes 1:1 as the file format is chosen to support the
software's needs best (or vice versa).

In contrast, for other (i.e. non-native) formats, the software first has
to convert the "foreign" data format into what it understands. This is
done by import resp. export filters, which map the software's needs to
file format givens and thus allows the software to "understand" foreign
formats.

Does this answer your question? Or did you mean something completely
diffferent? Why did you ask this question?

without knowing the reasons of your problem, and in addition what Brian
wrote, you could try the following:

As dates are represented internally by (integer) numbers, please select
the cells containing the dates before you copy them, and set the cell
format to "standard". Then all dates should turn into numbers.

What happens if you copy&paste those numbers to your new spreadsheet?

Do the numbers change?

If not, you can then select the target cells and format them as date -
and see if they are correct now.

The first idea that came up to my mind is that unrecognized or
misinterpreted EOL sequences might exist within the file.

If you have a \n sequence inside of a text field it might or might not
be recognized as End of Line.

The same might happen if there are mixed Windows- Unix- or Mac-type EOL
sequences (CR, CR/LF, or LF).

(Don't know how to visualize them appropriately but you might succed in
loading the file in writer and doing a search/replace.)

However, the above should not change the number of rows inside Calc as
the presumed misinterpretation should have happend during Import/Export
only - but not within Calc itself. But it might be worth a look.

Navigator (F5). It's not ideal, but a bit quicker than manual navigation.

In normal ;-) OSes when you restart LO without a user folder, LO will create a
new one. I don't know however, how this is handled in a MAC environment. Maybe
there is a permissions problem?

Two suggestions:

1- click somewhere inside the Accept/Reject window so it gets active,

[libreoffice-users] Built-in Help vs. User Guides (was: Re: Inserting comment causes Impress to close without warning)

> Le 04/05/12 04:21, Tom Davies a écrit :

But OTOH, built-in Help is *very* helpful in certain situations IMHO. So, if
one is looking for the exact syntax of a regex or if one wants to learn about
how to use a calc function, it is first choice.

So it has two aspects, the helpful one and the - how you put it - "sucking"
one.

So what we have to do is,
* looking where we can improve the bad aspects
* trying to keep up the valuable aspects
* make people aware of *both* sides and help them adjusting their expectations
to the reality: that will maximize their benefit.

Generalizations like "the help is bad, rather look into User Guides" are less
helpfull.

User Guides have their uniqe role in helping people to understand certain
principles / concepts, as they offer much more space for detailed & redundant
descriptions. However they are "secondary products" often produced by "mere
users" and thus there are two major "gaps" within them: the time gap, i.e.
they "follow" development with a certain delay and, the accuracy gap, i.e.
they can miss certain aspects or details or functions, just because they have
been simply overseen or forgotten by the original writer of the guide.

Therefore, I'd rather have us teaching people the difference between the
possibilities of getting help than playing them off against each other and
thus confusing people.

(And, yes, there are the bad aspects, too. They need improvement, of course.)

Nino

Sorry, as I'm working with text mostly, I've overseen that \d is not the
correct syntax for digits. Pressing Help (or F1) in the search dialog, you'll
find a link to the List of Regular Expressions. There you can see, that a
digit is represented by [:digit:], not by \d. So you might have to search for
" ([:digit:]{2}.){2}[:digit:]{2}" or similar (without the double quotes).

This regex will find text like " 123456", not numbers (as numbers are numbers
and do not contain blanks)

what do you mean by "pairs"? The above regex does not find any kind of

So, I'm a bit clueless, what you want to search really.

As said, I want a formatted output, and this cannot be achieved by mere
dragging as there is text in between and different font styles are used.

Just tried. It says, "29 page breaks replaced" but they are still there, and
you can rerun the search with the same result over and over.

I do not see how to achieve the desired result by mere dragging.

E.g. with the included database Biblio, I can create the following Template:

==

 by
 ,
 ISBN:
==

>From this template, a list is created by copying several instances of the same
template until the end of the page, then mailmerging, i.e. printing the wanted

[libreoffice-users] Wanted: Macro for removing Page Breaks in MailMerge docs

2012-05-01 Thread Nino Novak
Hi,

when producing MailMerge text documents, semi-automatic Page Breaks are
inserted which can only be removed manually one by one, but not "all together"
by e.g. selecting the whole document (Ctrl+A) and removing Page Breaks in the
Format Paragraph dialog.

XML shows that paragraphs with page breaks are different from paragraphs
without page breaks, they bear the name "P4":

which - I suppose - is responsible for the page break before this paragraph.

Questions:
- Can anybody tell me, why in these "automatic" type styles the page break
cannot be removed with Strg+A but only one by one?
- Can anybody give me a hint how to write a Macro which removes those page
breaks? (If it's possible at all - in Spreadsheets there seems to be a
function which does a similar job[1], but the described problem might need a
bit more sophisticated proceeding).

No, there is no "lite" version. As for the download size: I don't know the
exact numbers, but about 80% of the total is common code used by all modules,
and the rest is different for each module. So you would end up in having ~85%
of the code for a single module - this does not really make sense.

This installer is only for cosmetic reasons, I believe.

Sorry, I don't know anything about Base - but in Writer you just insert a
"Hyperlink", chose "Document" and enter a Document URL. If the document has a
extension/MIMEtype/whatever which is known to the system, the default app will
open the document. That's at least how it works here.

If you happen to use Linux, you can use psutils (psnup and psbook) to print
such nice booklets. According to Google, there seems to be also a Windows
version, but I did not try it.

If it can be done with LibreOffice, I don't know. But you can export to pdf

Pertti, the problem is, that software usability today in most cases is still
far from being intuitive.

So the analogy with the car does not seem appropriate. Better take a Jumbo
Jet's cockpit. Even if you don't want to fly it, but just to roll across the
airport, you need to know awfully lots of things to move the plane.

The challenge is to use LibreOffice despite of its shortcomings ;-)

Despite its name, the "parallel install" does not install the software but
just copies the executables into the chosen directory. So nothing will be
wiped out or changed.

The only thing you have to take care is that your user profile does not get
altered. For this you should tweak the UserInstallation line of the
bootstraprc file as described *before* starting the application.

For Vanilla builds (i.e. downloaded from *.libreoffice.org), LibreOffice uses
the FDO (free desktop org) bugtracker[1].

Instructions see Wiki[2].

For easier proceeding, you might want to use the Bug Submission Assistent[3].

If you use a (modified) distro build, you'll want to use your distro's
tracker.

Did you enter appropriate reports for these bugs? Are you watching them?
Did you escalate them appropriately so developers are really aware about them?
(Without proper escalation, even very annoying bugs can stay unfixed for a

Subject: Install RPM as non-superuser

Hi all,

I have been using Open/Libre Office under Linux since at least release
1.5, but there was an annoying problem during installation starting with
OpenOffice 2: As a rule, you must be superuser to install it (at least
for the RPM files). This can be critical. Once I had to write some
analysis in a company on a computer without any administrator available.
(It was a Linux machine with the broken OpenOffice 2.0 on it.) Happily,
I knew how to transform all the RPM's to a big tgz archive and carried
OpenOffice 2.1 as tgz with me. For simple usage, you only need the file
tree somewhere (locally), and you must know to call .../program/soffice to
start.

The shell script below does this transformation and expects a tar.gz
archive of RPM's from the official distribution as argument. It is more
or less straightforward but I remember that many people asked in a forum
what to do with alle the RPM's not being superuser (it *is* possible,
but you have to install your own package database). I know that there
are difficulties to offer such tgz packages because of upload speed of
contributors, but it could be possible to run this script on a server
after uploading the packages in recent form..

At least, I think it should be known (and what to do with the file
tree). A guy during the Linux Day in Chemnitz (Germany) recommended me
last weekend to put such instruction to the wiki. Before spamming, I
would like to ask the community if this is worth a wiki entry ... (I
have possibly one more item - a Python class to analyze and modify ODF
files without using LibreOffice, but I think this would be rather a
Python issue).

Best

Reinhard

Erm - yes. However...

Sort of ... I'm the wrong person for this kind of discussion. I'm a simple
