At this point I am sort of stumped. It does seem like a bug though.

I have filed a bug report about this behavior at https:\
\bugs.freedesktop.org bug number 38419. I reference this thread.

As far as I know this has only occurred with Linux.

This seems like ground hog day. I am sure I have been through this all a
while back with OOO when I reported a similar (the same) bug. If you
search way back in the archives it should be found, but don't know what
the fix was.

I have started to add to the bug report what I find and what jogs my memory.

The problem is not evident on OSX with LO 3.4.0 or on Suse 11.0 + LO
3.3.2 using konqueror.

It is evident with Suse 11.3 + LO 3.?? (have to check again) with
Dolphin. There is an error message when I save as from LO, I will check
again tomorrow when I boot my draftsman off his machine, something along
the lines of the file can only be saved to a local drive.

From recollection last time it happened when Linux distros went from
the smb driver to the cifs driver. Konqueror stayed with the SMB code
and Dolphin may have changed. There was some sort of issue. I mount most
of my smb storage (Nas units) at login so the storage share appears in
the local file system.

I suspect something changed in Ubuntu from 10. to 11. and LO needs to
change to accommodate this.

I think I have found a solution. Essentially it involves an alternative
method of mounting network shares, The details are

I am now able to open and save with LO without any issues.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: General input/output error when saving to network drive

2011-06-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The 11.04 uses some very new systems but they 'shouldn't' affect networking.
They probably do but they shouldn't.

Nautilus is not great at handling network shares. Something like Dolphin or
even Thunar might be worth installing alongside Nautilus because they are
better
file-browsers for networked folders.

The default Samba smb configurations tend to be a bit wonky in all releases
of
Ubuntu. Mostly i have found it sets the workgroup name wrongly. I think the
configuration files are in /etc/Samba ??

However, since you were able to save a text-file to the required folder over
the
network none of that sounds like it's a problem on your system :)

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or 10.10 are worth trying on the older machine or even as a
dual-boot install alongside your current install f you have a spare 15Gb
free-space on yor main machine. Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 as a
dual-boot on your old machine is a better plan before risking messing up your
main machine.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for the quick replies.

In response to the above posts:

1) I just checked the Package Manager for LO, I went to the status button,
scrolled down to the LO packages, and everything looked ok. The
Libreoffice-filter-mobiledev and Libreoffice-report-builder-bin did not
have the package supported icon listed, but nothing was listed as broken.
I am a bit new to Ubuntu and LO, so I am not sure if there are further
checks to do. However earlier I removed LO, and tired to install OOo.
Interestingly trying to install OOo in Ubuntu reinstalled LO instead.
Anyway. I still had the same problem.

2) I was able to open save text files to the network share using Text Editor
with no problem.

3) As for the drive, it is connected to a router via ethernet (It is the
MyBook Live drive). The western digital software allows share to be either
public or private on the drive. I have the shares set to public so that they
are accessible to everyone in the house. The other 3 computers on the
network (1 windows xp, 1 windows 7, 1 Ubuntu 10.04 on mac G4) can fully
access files via LO.

Again, thanks for any insights.

Hi. So as I understand it then, Ubuntu 10.04 + OO is working, 11.04 + LO
is not.
Can you install LO on the G4 to see if it works, I have OO and LO both
on my linux machines without conflict. This will test if it is the
Ubuntu version, I had an issue when Suse made a change to their smb drivers.

[libreoffice-users] Re: General input/output error when saving to network drive

2011-06-14 Thread protonpusher
Steve, you are correct, the LO 3.3.2 does not work well with my network drive
on Ubuntu 11.04. I have tried to install OOo on this machine through the
Software center, but it always installs LO instead (even after removing LO),
so I have not been able to test if there is a difference between OOo and LO
on this machine. I do see OOo listed in the package manager, but it is not
installed and I am not sure how to go about installing OOo through the
package manager. I did select everything with LibreOffice in its name and
used Fix broken links as suggested above. No luck, still does not work.
For kicks I installed KOffice, and it does work fine with with the network
drive. Can't say I like the look of KOffice though, and I am more
comfortable with OOo and LO.

Also you are correct” OOo works fine on a very old mac based Ubuntu 10.04. I
tried to install LO on this but I just got a bunch of error messages about
the wrong system architecture (the G4 is powerpc based, and Libreoffice
seems to require pentium based pc).

I have an older laptop with a blank hard drive that I will attempt to
install earlier versions of unbuntu with the older OO and see what happens.

Might take a couple of days though.
