Hi :) The 11.04 uses some very new systems but they 'shouldn't' affect networking. They probably do but they shouldn't.
Nautilus is not great at handling network shares. Something like Dolphin or even Thunar might be worth installing alongside Nautilus because they are better file-browsers for networked folders. The default Samba & smb configurations tend to be a bit wonky in all releases of Ubuntu. Mostly i have found it sets the "workgroup" name wrongly. I think the configuration files are in /etc/Samba ?? However, since you were able to save a text-file to the required folder over the network none of that sounds like it's a problem on your system :) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or 10.10 are worth trying on the older machine or even as a dual-boot install alongside your current install f you have a spare 15Gb free-space on yor main machine. Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 as a dual-boot on your old machine is a better plan before risking messing up your main machine.
