You don't mention the OS or desktop you are working with. But if you are on
Windows, open the Task Manager -> Details and "end process tree" for each
instance of "soffice.bin". If that does not clear--then repeat and use the
Help -> "Restart in Safe mode" dialog to clear your user profile (or do it
manually in the AppData/Roaming directory).

zahra,

Yes, I use Slackware Linux exclusively on all of my computers. I was
surprised there is a LO 5.2.7.2 released. I was not expecting that, so
I have not been keeping up. I will download it as soon as I can.
Thanks for mentioning it.

I normally use OpenOffice (AOO) for most of my work, since there are
some bugs in LibreOffice (LO) since 4.x that I find frustrating.
Mainly, that it does not restore my last session properly, where AOO
still does. However, AOO no longer bundles the Base Report Generator in
their package and LO still does. So I keep LO installed for my
quarterly database reports that I generate. Other than that. LO and AOO
are interchangeable to me.

No - the bugs will never "mostly be worked out" - there are thousands of
reported bugs. I recommend getting on the latest version. You'll get
lots of perks and new features and experience basically the same number
of bugs (give or take a few dozen). A nasty bug for me might be a

2017-06-01 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi Charles.
It depends upon what you are doing, as from 3.1 there have been some
changes.

If you use EPS illustrations, you may need to stay with an older version.
If you produce larger documents with more numerous images distributed in
PDF (books, manuals) it may pay to stay with the last of the 4 series.
If you just do day to day word processing and spread sheets, I would
recommend the last of the 5.2 series. The 5.3 series may even be fine.

I have not found any of them to be unstable, just bags that affect
certain areas of use.

There is another option: get a free account at https://open365.io/ and use
LibreOffice 5.1.0.3 within your browser.

If you install the open365 Android application you will have two
synchronized copies of each document: 1 in your tablet and another on the
open365 cloud.

The good news: if your tablet breaks all your documents are safe. The bad
news: because LibreOffice is running in your browser you can only edit your
files when you are connected to the internet...

It is currently the closest you can get to having LibreOffice on an Android
tablet...

For my current needs I have found Libre Base more than adequate.

Indeed, I have no important office document that is not connected to
some type of database -- one way or the other, dBase, HSQL server, csv,
spreadsheet or H2 SQL.
My users are very happy with my data sources but whenever they need
something different or something new, they have to contact me.

Common misconceptions:
Base is a development tool. It is not for end users. The result of your
work should be aimed at end users.
As soon as you create your first database table, you develop your own
data structure, a user-defined storage format so to say where data types
play the most important role. Most office users can not even comprehend
the difference between text and values in a spreadsheet. Relations and
indices are further refinements of your data structure. Proper database
design requires some knowledge beforehand. Learning by doing is not an
option here.
The database has nothing to do with Base. HSQL, MySQL, Calc or your
Microsoft ADO driver work independently. First of all, you work with
these programs while developing with Base.
Base provides forms for the aledged end user to fill your predefined
data structures. The input form transfers meaningful information into
data which are stored in your structures. Form design is development
work as well. It requires that you fully understand the underlying data
structures and how to utilize the limited set of (sub-)forms and their
form controls. Form design is also the place where most of the macro
development takes place (if any).
Queries turn meaningless data into meaningful information. Reports dump
information to printable office documents.

End users load forms to type information into the right places of your
structure and they load reports, form letters, spreadsheets to fetch
some of the stored data as meaningful information.
All the questionable helpers that were implemented back in 2005
(OpenOffice.org 2.0) have not much improved since then and they are
mostly obsolete. Any person with the mind set of a developer is better
off without them.
Nevertheless, we have to recognize that 90% of all Base documents out
there link spreadsheets to form letters. In this very limited context,
the existing primitive query designer adds some extra value for those
who never wrote a single SQL statement.

Of course you may use the idiotic query designer to build a similar
(though more complicated) query, but why?

In this particular case the query designer is stupid because you need to
include all the fields in the right column order. You can not select *
(all fields) and then apply some sort order on fields that are not visible.

And you can not define something like

SELECT want, what, you
FROM Table
ORDER BY what,you,want

where the field order differs from the sort order which does not matter
since the column order means nothing. In your forms and reports you are
free to use the fields in any column order.

There are many more reasons why the query designer is completely
inefficient and inadequate in the context of a relational database.
Writing down simple SQL statements is so much easier than using this GUI
rubbish. Quite often the designer turns a valid SQL statement into an
invalid one. Very often it fails to do mildly advanced stuff.
There are similar issues with the table designer, the index designer and
the form designer. The form designer is the worst member of the crew.

The clou is: After you have defined this simple query one way or the

has the exact same properties as the original table, behaves exactly in
the same ways while presenting the data in the sort order you want.

The database engine (MySQL) has zero influence on the tick boxes.
OK understood - but is there any way to adjust their size??

I don't know. I would expect that the theme of your window manager is

LibreOffice 4.4.x is considered the current stable version, although

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Libre office

2014-11-20 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The problem is that not all of those formats are consistent all the time.
Where any of those formats have many different implementations in different
programs, or different versions of the same programs then LibreOffice (and
OpenOffice) tends to be one of the best around.

Some LibreOffice users have been able to help colleagues share files
between different versions of MS Office where their colleagues struggled to
share directly with each other. Direct sharing of files between different
versions of MS Office is a little hampered by the differences in the
transitional specs for 'docX' in MS Office 2007, 2010, 2013 and 365 -
none of which seems happy to open 'strict' OOXML (unlike LibreOffice (and
other non-MS programssuites) which handles strict DocX fine too).

Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] RE: Libre Office 4 and MS Sysprep

2013-03-14 Thread V Stuart Foote
John,

Hmm, not sure that in Windows 7 using Sysprep and using WAIK to prepare a
CopyProfile=true Specialize stanza into a filename.xml reliably overwrites
the default user run from any user other than the Administrator account running
in Audit mode.

Not sure what happens with file associations and per program user
configurations if you use an account other than Administrator in Audit mode.
But my sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /unattend:filename.xml SYSPREPs prior to
image capture seems to behave pretty well with customizations done in audit
mode being copied into a new default user profile and apps running correctly.
Only a few issues with occasional linkage to
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming for program configuration and temp
space--but not LibreOffice.

I've had no problems with desktop icons placed on the C:\Users\Public\Desktop

On the file association side, I don't deploy with LibreOffice set as default
for anything but its native ODF formats, so I can't comment there about
SYSPREPs impact, not too surprised if MS allows SYSPREP to clobber some file
associations. And, there are continuing problems with the LibreOffice file
associations that make the whole issue kind of dicey. We have an enhancement
request in place for a File Association Manager for Windows builds of
LibreOffice (fdo#44462 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44462 )

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Libre Office 4 and MS Sysprep

I have created an image of Windows 7 x64 and LO4 using sysprep. Sysprep is
setup to copy the current user to the default profile yet all preconfigured
settings are gone and desktop icons have disappeared when the system comes back
up. Other desktop icons/settings make it through this process fine but Libre
seems to revert to a generic default install. Is this by design or are there
special steps I need to take during the sysprep process?

Basically what I would like is for all LO programs to have their default save
type as their Microsoft equivalents and icons on the desktop already setup in
the default user so that whoever logs in is basically ready to go. I know LO
pushes ODF but until we get a larger portion of our population changed over
this is the most realistic for us. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
John

If you are copying and pasting or using fill down the references
increment according to the new location. If you need to reference the
same cell you must use $A$1 to tell Calc (or any spreadsheet) that this
cell reference does not change when pasting or filling down.

For a column of entries to be multiplied by a constant I have two
choices. I can enter the constant into each formula or use an absolute
reference to the cell where the constant's value is entered. The latter
is generally a better technique because any time you need to change the
value you only need to make one entry and all the calculations are
automatically updated.

Thanks for responding to my question. I have been using LibreOffice for quite

it was because of operating system updates.

I am using Ubuntu Linux, Libre Office 3.5.3.2. The ruler is on in the

check the document in print preview, it looks like what I want - a full

The required database drivers come from Microsoft. Microsoft will never

some other database.
The embedded database must not be used for anything but demos and drafts.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Libre Office brings my system down

2012-01-12 Thread Stefan Dröge
In the meantime I also tried 3.5, but the same problems occur there.
It might have something to do with hardware acceleration /
antialiasing. At least I found several posts in different forums whith
users who have the same problems.
In one forum someone stated that disabling Antialiasing and Hardware
Acceleration helped. I will try this.
I also found several bugreports which document similar problems.

2012/1/11 Stefan Dröge ste...@sdroege.de:
Hi all, since a long time I experience really annoying crashes of
LibreOffice that bring my complete system (Linux) down.
 The symptoms are:
 - Everything stops, only the mouse cursor is still movable (however the
cursor Icon stays in the last state)
 - I can't even switch to the console (Ctrl+F1 for example), Ctrl+Backspace
 doesn't work either
 - No harddisk actions can be heared
 - The system only responds to Magic SysRq keys

So the system seems to be completely dead.

I experience these problems since a longer time. I tried LO 3.3.4 as well as
 3.4.4
I tried it on Kubuntu and openSuse (KDE), both 64 bit.

If I remember correctly, the crash occured when I drag an object in a
document. It doesn't happen every time.

Has anybody else experienced these issues? Which information can I provide
 to you to investigate?

 Kind regards, Stefan

Hi :)
Have you tried renaming the User Profile to see if that has an effect?

Also which version of java are you using? Any more recent than 6_24 often
causes the types of problems you describe. Can you switch off java

Tools - Options - Java
or does LO grumble when you do that?

The iPad2 has 32GB of storage plus whatever you want to pay for in iCloud.
I was not thinking of using USB sticks as you cannot connect them directly

Transfers would be made through Sync or iCloud.
The only problem I see is obtaining a version that will run on the IOS5
system.

 Hello, Jay.

I should have said that it’s in Writer only. I’m using Libre Office
3.4.3 (build 302), from the Ubuntu repository. I’m using Gnome Classic,
not Unity (and on a fairly dated computer).

Today was a disaster, but also may have led to a discovery. Having tried
everything else, I resorted to purging Libre Office altogether from my
computer and reinstalling from scratch. Same problem.

Going on the supposition that the problem was specific to a particular
document, I reconstructed the complex document I was working on,
starting with a new layout, styles, and all the components copied from
various places. That took me most of the day (and I’m not finished yet).
Everything seemed to be working properly now; then, when I copied in the
text from one particular file (a .docx file that I received from someone
 else), the problem began again.

I noticed what seemed to be a space at the end of each paragraph (which,
incidentally, is a very common feature of Microsoft files copied into
Open Office or Libre Office). Now, though, the application would quit
every time I tried to delete one by backspacing over it or using the
delete key. After many failures I managed to get rid of them all (I
hope) by selecting “cut” from the menu, or pasting other text over the
 mystery space.

I saved one of these characters and pasted it into Character Map to see
if I could identify it (and so be able to search for it in the future),
but it won’t allow me to paste it in.

If this is the source of the problem (and of course I don’t know for
certain that it is) I would hardly expect an application to quit because
of the presence a particular invisible character.

That’s today’s episode of the saga!

Perhaps you're running into this bug:

The things that are notable are:

1) The stonetest.odg created in Libreoffice loads, displays, and prints
correctly in Openoffice 3.2.

2) It prints incorrectly in two different windows operating systems on two
different printers (so it's not a specific driver issue).

3) The libra office exported PDF exports and displays and prints correctly.

It has to be a bug introduced to the printer rendering engine between 3.2
and 3.4.2.

I can't get a libreoffice 3.2 to test.

LibreOffice started out with its first version numbered 3.3.0, so no 3.2
version.

I do not have a 3.3.x version installed to test that line. On 3.4.1 -
64-bit Ubuntu - Export to PDF has jagged image issues.

Printing to the CUPS-PDF [and two different inkjet printers] show smooth
[not jagged] outlines, but the background image outlined but not filled
in with any color.

2011-08-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
That sounds good for a bug-report
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

If there is already a similar bug-report then could you add a comment now that
you have pinned it down a bit more? Now that you have a few images to work
with
have you tried transparency on all of them? Do you get the same problem? Can
you pin it down further?

The bug-reporting guide might help you collect error reports or logs of what is
happening. Are you saving in an OpenDocument format (apart from the Pdf)? If
so then you might be able to make a copy of the files and change the
file-ending
on the copy to .zip and then open that as tho it was a normal compressed/zipped
file. The different image files in there might show something interesting.

Good work, it feels like you are getting closer to finding out the problem :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I printed the PDF, it printed fine. All the curves were curved.

I created a new drawing. Simply a filled (bitmap stone) curvy shape- one

I cut and pasted the curvy shape, changed it to bitmap gravel, and set it to

Both layers printed jaggy.

I removed the transparency and it printed fine again (still with two layers)

I turned back on transparency in the top layer and it printed jaggy again.

2011-08-26 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

Is this the file with or without the transparent set?

I used LO 3.4.1 on Ubuntu-Linux to test the file.

For me, using using the Export to PDF gave me the jaggy image. It
also gave me a dialog box about removing the Transparency. But using the
CUP-PDF printer for Ubuntu, I get the smooth curves, but the bottom
layer's color does not show, just the curved outline.

Are you using Windows? If you are, install doPDF PDF printer. This is
free and is my default printer on my Vista Laptop. See if you get the
proper look printing your Draw documents with doPDF printer [as one of
the available printers in your printer list]. If you get a different
look with doPDF vs. Export to PDF in Draw, then the programmers will
have more info needed to fix the issue.

gradients; bottom is clear outline, top is blue with stone surface.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Libre Office Draw Printing Incorrectly.

2011-08-25 Thread maxo
I could post this to the openoffice site, they have attached documents there.

I exported this as a PDF (it exported correctly).
I printed the PDF, it printed fine. All the curves were curved.

I created a new drawing. Simply a filled (bitmap stone) curvy shape- one
layer.
It printed fine.

I cut and pasted the curvy shape, changed it to bitmap gravel, and set it to
50% transparent.
Both layers printed jaggy.

I removed the transparency and it printed fine again (still with two layers)

I turned back on transparency in the top layer and it printed jaggy again.

It's like the transparency is what kills the curves.

Attaching the file...

Hi :)
Oracle managed to mishandle OOo so badly that they couldn't monetise it.
Apparently IBM pushed Oracle into donating OOo to The Apache Foundation a few
weeks ago.

There are Apache people in TDF (and some TDF in Apache) lists to help the 2
projects work together more closely and people are now allowed to work in both
again. It's bit weird because Oracle is not particularly close to Apache so
it's possible they were attempting to hamper Apache by giving them a poisoned
pawn. I don't think Oracle were expecting Apache to suddenly work with TDF,
effectively draining the poison and making OOo much more viable. Then IBM
donated a lot of their Lotus code to Apache making OOo even more viable.
OpenSource co-operative competition between projects beat the proprietary
mind-set again.

Most MS people are probably very unaware of these rapid changes that have taken
place in the last few weeks so they probably do think they are fighting
Oracle's OOo by suggesting LibreOffice instead. Still, it's probably best
not
to inform them because they seldom appreciate being given better intel
especially if it's not directly from MS.

Hi :)
Try changing the colour from grey to something much more visible

Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Appearance

In the bottom box scroll down to Writer and change the various types of
breaks
to light red or something. Then scroll further down to change the options for
Calc. Hopefully it's just been that slightly different shades of grey are
difficult to distinguish from
each other!
Good luck and regards from

For me it takes me to my timothy user folder for Ubuntu.
This is the default folder for the computer, like yours would be
userdocuments

I keep all my .oxt files on a folder on a second physical drive.

My full path is:
big-drive/LibreOffice--folders/Non-DVD-related-folders/libreoffice-extensions-galleries-templates/LibreOffice__extensions-and-addons

where big-drive is the name for the second physical drive

I have no trouble adding any Extension in that folder, but actual
extensions will be recorded in the hidden folder called
.libreoffice/3/user/extensions/. . . . . ., if I remember correctly.
There may be other folders involved, but I do not know where they are on
my system [off hand].

I have a Mac 10.6.7 and LO 3.4 Build 5.
Apparently PDF Import is not included.
My understanding is the list in Extension Manager is only a list with links
to the Extension or the Download.
My list includes about 20 languages and the local Help for Extension Manager
will not load, so I am stuck.
BTW. Where are the Extensions kept?

Sorry. The PDF Importer is part of the package.
If you look at the file types you can Open, you will see that PDF's are
included and it works.
I now need to find Convert Text to Numbers and the Grammar Checker
though I am not sure of their names.
There is a very obscure place for filing Templates, The Extension folder
seems to be even more obscure.

they would probably be quite keen to add them to LibreOffice's collection. I
have a feeling that it's usually pretty easy for the dev's of a particular

them
all from the LibreOffice's end otherwise it would probably have been done

I think the reason for not having those extensions transferred
 automatically
was due to licensing reasons. I think I remember, that LibO only wants to have
truly open extensions. But I can be wrong. :)

Yes, this is the problem with both the extensions and templates. Even
worse, many of these extensions only carried the author's name with no
email or url to track them down.

For Windows and Ubuntu, I double click on them, since the .oxt file uses
LibreOffice's as their application. You should then get the Extension
Manager to open up and install them properly.

I did not know LO was at 3.4.5, since 3.4 is in its RC2 stage and should
not have gone that high yet.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Libre Office localization for multinational work environment

2011-04-10 Thread dphurst
In Tools | Options | Language Settings | Languages, what is your Locale set
to?

I'm sure your feeling a bit frustrated with everyone's responses. After
reading through the thread, I was frustrated and it's not my problem!
However, the real problem is determining if your LO's Locale is set to a
particular setting and then figuring out how to modify that locale. So, my
question to others, does LO have it's own set of locale definitions that it
accesses and is that where the definition of how Cevad's numbers are
displayed is really located, or does LO actually access the installed
systems modified locale settings for such information?

Let's define the question more precisely since the easy way out isn't
working. Obviously, a predefined locale setting isn't sufficient here.
And, I think LO may not be accessing the actual locale information that
Cevad has already defined for his Linux box. So, based on Cevad's comment
that LO wasn't accessing his system's default definition of how to display
numbers and so on, doesn't it seem that LO isn't accessing that set of
locale information but a separately defined set of locale information that
hasn't been modified?

The real question: Where are the files that comprise the locale settings
for LO? Default or otherwise? After that is answering, the next question
becomes: How are those files modified to match his current Pardus systems
definitions?

Best wishes,
Dow

It already does. From Help:

Locale setting
Specifies the locale setting of the country setting. This influences
settings for numbering, currency and units of measure.
The Default entry selects the locale setting that is selected for the

A change in this field is immediately applicable. However, some formats

Perhaps you should readjust your system 'locale' settings.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Libre Office localization for multinational work environment

2011-04-05 Thread oz1
Just a feed back.
I have followed the suggestions to have multiple localization definitions in
a single calc sheet for necessary cells.
Although it was very time consuming to define those things (numbers
different, dates different, etc.) the result was perfect for the appearance
on screen or on printed copies.
But a side effect discovered later.
When we send the document from our office to outside world. They are
constrained with our definitions and presentation style. They can not see
the formats in the way they want / used to. They have to change the cells
localization to be able to correct the appearance.
As a result we will not use this multi localizations method to be able to be
compatible with other parties.

May be this time I can state it more specifically:
What we need is to modify screen/print appearance of US-EN locale settings.
This requires customization of decimal symbols, dates, percentages, thousand
seperater character, or etc. Like global locale settings of operating
systems.
Or much more easily:
LibO should look to the system global settings for all those definitions.
We need a working button Use Global locale settings in LibO.

Thanks for your all support and help.
Cevad

Thanks again to Johnny, as you stated it solves partially the problem.
Unfortunately our set of definitions are not fitting German
(Leichtenstein) perfectly. So in a single document we have to define
several cells with different local formats. (i.e. To see Eng. names of
the days, or usd symbol for the currency and etc.)
But for sure Johnny's suggestion is very useful and works for particular
needs.

Thanks again.

My conclusions after all discussions and contributions:

1. LO is not referring to system settings (-such as decimal point

Difficult to understand, why not?)

2. There is no way to customize those symbols/characters. (P.S. to

suits best. (P.S. Default US-EN suits me best (-not perfect) for all

4. There is only one possibility to alter the predefined characters and
it is providing a new dictionary file. (P.S. I have no idea how to do
it? Where and how should I start to study the issue? )

For the interim, why not try as Johnny suggested?

Tools|Options|Language Settings|Languages|Local setting: German
(Liechtenstein)|Default Currency: set to your choice. Then in Calc:
Format|Cells|Number: -1'234.12|OK
Your example number then shows as 123'456'789.00

Thanks for the instructions below. I wondered what the best way to do
it for Linux [Ubuntu 10.10].
Most people I deal with for multi languages use Windows, and that is
easy[er].

On 03/30/2011 08:01 AM, kennedyd wrote:

hello cevad,

We had a similar problem when we were installing LibreOffice 3.3 on linux.
We work in English, Dutch, German and French. We found that the following
method worked for us.

1. We installed a base system using the English GB option. This means that
the menus and default dictionaries, local settings and so forth are in
British English. (We are Europeans. You can choose any available language as
the base system.)
So we downloaded and installed:
1.the basic US tar.gz file
2.the en-GB language pack tar.gz file
3. the en-GB help pack tar.gz file
as instructed by the 'Installing LibreOffice 3.3 on Linux' documentation.

Then to install the other three languages dictionaries and local settings
for numbers, dates and so forth we installed ONLY the 'dict' binary from
within each language pack.
We followed the method described below. (We use SuSE and Debian
distributions here. For the Debian and its derivative distributions
substitute 'deb' for 'rpm' and 'DEB' for 'RPM' in the examples below.)

1. Download ONLY the langpacks for the languages and local settings you
require.
2. Open a terminal as root.
3. Copy the downloaded language pack(s) to your choice of installation
directory.
For example to install the German dictionaries and local settings:
cd /opt
cp /home/kd/Downloads/LibO_3.3.2_Linux_x86-64_langpack-rpm_de.tar.gz .
4. Unpack the language pack(s)
tar -xvf LibO_3.3.2_Linux_x86-64_langpack-rpm_de.tar.gz .
5. Change to the directory LibO...
cd LibO_3.3.2rc2_Linux_x86-64_langpack-rpm_de/
6. Then cd to either the RPM subdirectory or in the case of a debian
distribution to the DEB subdirectory.
cd RPM
7. List the files within and look for the 'dict' binary in the list. Then
'rpm' or 'dpkg' this file only.
rpm -Uvh libreoffice3-dict-de-DE-3.3.2-202.x86_64.rpmlt;in the case of
the SuSE distribution.gt;
8. Repeat the steps 1 to 8 for any other languages and settings you wish to
install.

Launch LibreOffice and open the 'Tools'|'Options...'Language
Settings'Languages'.
You should now be able to set the Local setting to your prefered location.
For example: Germany (Germany)
You should also now be able to set your language setting for the documents
to you choice of language.
