As you haven't mentioned your operating system, or what problem you
have, let's ask a few questions.

Did you get the download from https://openoffice.org/download/ ?
Did you read the installation instructions at
https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html ?

What did you do to try and install, and what happened when you tried?

have checked the Blacklist and Junk rules and neither Apache or
OpenOffice or any combination appears in any list. Is it possible to
use this email address to forward the Activation Key?

If not, the question I have is - I have recently bought a Wacom One
Graphics Tablet. Once the tablet is installed OpenOffice will not
open. I am in contact with Wacom Support, a helpful lady, but no
success. I have updated OpenOffice to 4.1.15 and Windows 10 (64x) is
up to date. I have tried disabling Norton, no success. Do I need a
graphics plug in to run a graphics tablet through OpenOffice?
Unusually, it works fine with Paint.net, Coral Draw, GIMP and Decadry
(a quirky and temprimental  design program)!!

F O I I have limited PC skills regarding operating systems but am
average with music, photography and using OpenOffice to create my

Regular crash with Windows 11

Open Office,

Currently running Open Office 4.1.15 under windows 11. In Open Office

Whenever I make even a minor change, the program crashes with no
warning, etc.

The same version of Open Office running under windows 10 works just fine

Are there any known issues with Windows 11 support? I can provide the
file and more details of a crash if needed. If there is a crash log
file, I can provide that as well, providing someone points me to the
file location.

Thanks,

Hi
Guess I'm missing something here.
In sheets I've formatted my efforts into A5 Landscape and can print
that out fine (albeit as top of A4 sheet)
So to get two copies onto the single sheet I copied and pasted the
cell directly under the top page boundaries as recognised.

Tidied things up to equal the two pages to be alike. Again no problem.
Go to Print Preview (Using all three options) and the pasted cells are
not seen

Even printed out and in case I wasn't 'getting' it. Only page 1 printed.
Checking back from preview and do not see page limits recognised for
the copied page???

What am I missing?
(Work saved multiple times in xls and ods format. Page 2 still not
seen in printer previews?)

It seems you  are talking about a spreadsheet. Perhaps you have applied
a print range which doesn't include the additional copied material. See

I Have Open Office 4.1.14 and I'm having problems following the directions below. Might
be I am trying to do this starting from the wrong place. I have a file
"addresses.ods" where I have saved about 70+ addresses. I was hoping that I
could use this file to print out address labels in the Avery 8160 format.

First question might be is it possible to print these out using an ODS file?

Years ago I used Excell to keep service records at the heavy equipment shop where I worked and had pretty good luck doing that and putting formulas in to flag when something was due for service.

Yes, you are doing it wrong; proper way would be to start a new topic.

There is an Avery label 8160 already defined in OpenOffice Writer.

Choose File | New | Labels. On the dialog that appears, there is a
dropdown list for label selection; at the bottom of the dialog under
Format select radio button for Sheet and under Brand, select Avery
Letter Size. Then scroll down the selections in Type to find 8160.

Second, I don't know how to tell / determine what kind of document it is... between
database or ... "Calc'... whatever distinguishes.
At the top left of the window in which you are working should appear the
filename followed by the application that has opened the file - Calc for
spreadsheet or Base for database.

Third, from the Get Info box... on one ( Macbook ) computer, I'm using ...
Version: OpenOffice 4.1.8 AOO418m3 (Build:9803)

...and on a different computer ( a more often used iMac)
Version: 3.1.1 (Build: 9420)

The formula I should have used works logically elsewhere outside OO, but not in
the OO document.
When asking originally, I errored using the above as a two part formula... that
actually contained a problem in the first place.
Apologies for the mistaken way I described my predicament originally.
Mathematically I could / should have written it as...

If K102 < 14 then L102 = "Yes", else L102 = "No"
I'll continue to assume Calc until proven otherwise. Note that a
spreadsheet formula can only affect the cell in which it is contained.
If you want to display the "Yes" or "No" in L102 then the formula must
be in L102 and would be:

=IF(K102 < 14; "Yes"; "No")

... but I most certainly still do not understand how to make that work right in
my document.
I can set up a simplified version if that helps everything... and if it's ok to
send it to the list.
The list strips attachments, so that wouldn't be possible. Alternatively
you could register and post on
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/index.php

So, that's where things are...and most certainly I do appreciate the input /
feedback / help.
Thanks again for everyone's input and courtesy.

You haven't said which component of AOO you are working with. You
mention database but then mention adjacent cells, which would suggest Calc.

Assuming the latter, a formula like the following should achieve what
you seem to want. You haven't mentions what to display if value is
between 10 and 14 so I've used UNDEFINED; replace with whatever you
want. Assuming your "value" is in A1, place in B1

=IF( A1 > 14; "NO"; IF( A1 <= 10; "YES" ; "UNDEFINED"))

Yes to both. As per answers to this question in another mailing list:

"Both programs should install side by side because they use different
default install locations.

OpenOffice, so I would suggest to do a "Custom Install" and deselect the

"The short answer is yes. You can install OpenOffice now. Both will
work. However there will be a "fight" to be associated with normal
office file types (such as Open Document, Word, Excel, etc) This means
that when you open a Word file with one Office (be it OpenOffice,
LibreOffice or MS Office) it will become associated with this suite and
to open with another one you will have to deliberately use the "Open
with" option. If this acceptable then you can use multiple Office
suites. If this is confusing then it is better to uninstall the one(s)
you don't use so much." - Pedro Lino

Is that the exact error message?

To where are you trying to save your documents?

What happens if you try to save to your desktop?

diagnose the problem.

Can't edit my PDF files

2023-05-24 Thread David Di Giacomo
Hi,
My name is David Di Giacomo and I have been an Apache Open Office user
for many years and have never encountered any problems with it. I think it is a
great program. However in the last 2-3 weeks I have encountered a problem, it
will not allow me to edit imported PDF documents.
I will explain what process I have always used in order to implement Open
Office,
1.) I scan a required document on my HP printer and send it to my computer as a
PDF file.
2.)I then open the scanned document, highlight it and then press control/C to
copy this document.
3.) I then open Open Office and click on Text Documents, when the Open Office
blank pages appears I then press control/V to paste this document. I have
always used this method and never have had any issues.
This is where my problem begins, when the importation to Open Office has been
completed, the document does appear but is imported with small squares on each
corner and middle outer edges. I then click my cursor outside the document and
the squares disappear but as soon as I go back into the body of the document a
cross hair symbol appears which allows me to relocate the document but will not
allow me to edit any of the text.
Telstra has downloaded all extensions but unfortunately it still did not work.
I really would appreciate if you can assist me with this problem for as I said
before I really like using this program.
If you can't fix this problem could you please suggest an alternative program.
  Best Regards
    David Di Giacomo

Re: Developer Verification

2023-05-16 Thread David Belina
This is a MacOS message, and a MacOS problem. MacOS uses a service called the
Gatekeeper to discourage installing non-Apple software. Apple changes the
Gatekeeper warnings and procedures often. You must ask Apple, or consult an
Apple forum if you are having difficulty with using MacOS. You may need to
check with Apple for the correct procedures for your version of MacOS. The
following link was current as of November 2022:
https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/open-a-mac-app-from-an-unidentified-developer-mh40616/13.0/mac/13.0.
Follow Apple's instructions. For many versions of MacOS this procedure has
worked: In Finder use Go (menu) → Applications. If you can't find
OpenOffice.app in that folder see Q03/A03. Hold the Control key and click
OpenOffice.app, then select Open. After you've opened it once, Gatekeeper
should allow it to run in the future. MacOS 11 may require an additional step:
 → System Preferences → Security and Privacy → General → OpenOffice was
blocked → Open anyway.

Re: unable to open OpenOffice Writer application

2023-05-09 Thread David Koch
IF you are using Windows you may be experiencing a problem I have had over
the past 6 months or so. To get OpenOffice to open its apps again, try
this:
While holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys, press the Esc key to open Task
Manager.
Under Background Processes, scroll down and look for instances of
OpenOffice.
Right-click on each instance of OpenOffice and, in the list that opens,
left-click on "End task".

When all of the OpenOffice instances are gone, close Task Manager.
Now your OpenOffice should be able to open the app -- at least for awhile.
Every now and then I have to repeat this, but it is quicker than
re-starting your computer.

I hope this helps.

Disclaimer: I am new here, just subscribed. Please be kind if this ended

Hi.
I have a mixture of a discussion but also a proposal I would like to
make. I ended up here after doing a fair share of search engine digging,
not finding a good solution for the initial problem. Apparently, about
12 years ago, there started to be demand for what I'm going to discuss,
according to old Open Office forum posts I found in the process.

Problem part A:
As far as I can understand the software, there is not an easy structure
to user-friendly switch color themes in Open Office Writer (I haven't
looked at other programs, but it could be true for them as well).
Yes, there is one solution to switch colors.
You go... What was it? Edit, Settings? No, maybe View... Extras...
Appearance? No, not either. The correct way is
Extras>Settings>OpenOffice>Appearance (as an example, I'm myself still
confused about whether that now applies to all programs under the Open
Office wing, or just Writer??).
You see the first problem?
I as a user/dig my way through the whole interface/, potentially even
missing the settings for program appearance. This is not only very
difficult to find, it leads to *frustration*.
What I've been experiencing through the years of usage is the same
problem over and over again. We do have functions, but the amount of
clicks required to find them, is inefficient and brain-wrecking.
An analogy: Some updates ago, the 3D Software Blender moved their "User
Preferences" window from "Files" to "Edit". Why? It's more logical, it's
convenient and easy to find by one click, containing everything you need
in one single window with a couple of tabs. Blender also lets you choose
your "Theme" on first startup and later in the preferences and add new
themes as you please.

Which leads me to problem part B:
There are people who do have issues with bright light screens. Websites
these days update to "Dark Mode".
I could imagine following scenario: A person who needs accessibility
aids like a customized dark theme, would they even manage to find the
according settings to change the program appearance to their needs?
Would a person who is already puzzled by where to even save their file
or how to print find such an option?
Maybe, if it were easier to find, AND what I think of an improvement: If
there were well-designed pre-installed examplary color themes one could
just switch by clicking a button. There is a list of color schemes (for
me, there is only the OpenOffice light theme in the list!), but again,
until a user finds this option, they might have given up on it already.
Users are not designers. They might struggle with color values, how
light or dark the font color should be displayed and also, they might
worry that changing these colors might make their printer switch colors
as well. (I saw somebody in a forum stating you should revert appearance
before printing, they were likely scared of exactly that!). The concept
of a "Dark Theme" or "Dark Mode" is not so easy for them to understand
when they get a long, long list of colors they are to change themselves.
So what to do to improve? Instead, let the user have a standard one they
could switch by clicking one button a light theme button and a dark
theme button with an icon to determine what's going on.
Voilà. We have an accessible, easy system to make these changes. Just
like clicking a different theme in a PowerPoint presentation. And if
there is none the user likes, they can add a new one and have a new
button or a list for their themes, as well, selecting each color
individually just like you can do right now in version 4.1.7.

Now there's one extra point to the mix. We have users who are using
OpenOffice under Linux. I read that for some reason there is a Dark
Mode, but I don't understand the details at all. I cannot speak for
anybody using that OS, so this here is all from a Windows perspective. I
though do believe that a standardized option to do this throughout each
program *regardless* of OS or the like, would make things so much easier
for everybody.

In my own POV there are enough reasons to overhaul this part of the
system. Possibly, there are menu parts that could be put in one large
window containing everything you might need. The problem when you look
at your own project for too long is that you cannot see what your users
see anymore. You get "designer-blind" as some call that phenomenon. You
forget about those who don't have the structure in mind that you had,
building this. They just look at it and try to figure out how to solve
their problem. I grew up as one of those people, so I know the struggle
firsthand. And according to my research, people

Return When Cell Is Copied

2022-10-30 Thread David Stuhr

Hello,

I create and maintain a spreadsheet in OpenOffice. When I paste the
contents of a copied spreadsheet cell to another application (a
OpenOffice Writer document for instance) a return is added at the end of
the copied text. This happens in the Windows 11 and the macOS environments.

Can the addition of the return be suppressed or turned off is some way?
I have looked in Options and also Customize but I did not find anything
that I thought would control this behavior.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

How to Add Conditional Formatting to Existing Data

2022-09-06 Thread David Stuhr

Hello,

I have been teaching/learning how "Conditional Formatting" (cell value
and formula is) in OpenOffice Calc works. On new columns (or rows) of
data applying the conditional formatting is/has been a very straight
forward and an easy process. I have been able to apply the conditional
formatting using the "fill" method; define the conditional formatting in
a cell and the grab the small square in the lower right corner of the
cell and drag the cell to apply the conditional formatting to the
desired number of cells.

My question is about applying "formula is" conditional formatting to
existing data (dates) where dates are missing or duplicated in the
column and using the fill method described above would alter/change the
existing data values.

Thank your for your assistance.

Median Function Used as "Between"

2022-08-23 Thread David Stuhr

Hello,

Can the Median function in Open Office Spreadsheet be used as a between
function?

When the following equation is entered

=IF(B12=MEDIAN(120;129);"Yes";"No")

and cell B12 contains 121 formatted as Number General the equation
returns No.

I have also tested the equation with the values 120 and 129 replaced by
cell references and the same false value (No) is returned.

I have also replace the value of cell B12 with the value 118 and the
same false value (No) is returned.

All of my research on the web indicates that this equation works in
other spreadsheet products.

I am using Open Office 4.1.13 on a Windows 11 PC.

Am I doing something incorrectly?

To run it that the app has not been verified to work in apple. Can you make it
work in apple? I need it in my iPad as well.

T/he non app install problem originates in the GateKeeper part of Mojave (since
OS Sierra, apparently). This is how you adapt Mojave to suit your needs.

Great explanation Brian - a feature I’d never really understood before so just
ignored, certainly an ingenious use of it on this occasion, may well come back
to it in future for its intended purpose!

Thanks again for your help.

My fault entirely with this one Brian. Firstly I attached the wrong version of
my ‘text to columns’ spreadsheet. I had in fact made the corrections you had
highlighted on the version I should have attached, but still with the problem I
described. My second mistake however was not to realise that as well as cells
containing two years, cells containing one year followed by a single asterisk
were also evidently unacceptable and led to strange effects - because having
found several of these and removed the asterisks, everything now seems to be
hunky dory.

So ‘text to columns’ converts to text those cells originally entered as
numbers?

Thanks so much again and apols for the above. I promise not to single you out
for any more help I may need in future - but I really have appreciated it.

All best

"Sticking" instances of OO in Task Manager

2022-07-01 Thread David Koch
For years, OpenOffice was, I thought, the "canary in the coal mine" for
a needed restart of my computer. When OO files stopped opening I knew it
was time for a restart. Last year, due to a similar problem with Firefox
on a new computer, I learned that if I opened Task Manager, found
OpenOffice and saw several instances of OO listed, I could select one,
press the End Task button, and it and sometimes a couple more would
close. I continued until all OO files were closed. Then I could open the
needed OO files without restarting.

Last year I had a very similar problem with Firefox for 2 or 3 months
after getting the new computer. Then during a check, the problem was
suddenly gone and Firefox now works well. I wonder what causes this
problem of various instances of OO, why they "stick" in the Task Manager
until no more instances can be opened, and if there is something I can
do (or stop doing) to cure that "sticky" problem?
