Hello Michele,

The base component is created to talk to database through odbc or Jdbc
interfaces. Apache OpenOffice ships an embedded database which base talks
directly to.

You are welcome to help improve Apache OpenOffice. However development is
talked on d...@openoffice.apache.org. please write an email there, best
subscribe to dev. And we can talk try to get you in the development process.

All the best

Hi, and a couple of questions

2023-04-27 Thread Michele Petrovsky
Hope this finds you all well.

My initial question. Am I correct that the component *Base* in Open Office
4.1.14 can create and save databases in widely used formats? Or is it
limited to ODF?

As important to me: I'd like nothing better than to volunteer for several
of the items on your *Help Wanted* page. I've been retired now for about
three years, but prior to that I have a long history in IT, including
programming, documenting, and teaching. I can honestly say that I could
easily handle any of the items in your *Easy* section, and at least a few
in *Medium*.

I look forward to discussing my volunteering for Open Office.

Re: Calc Spreadsheet Questions (Linda)

2022-11-07 Thread PCS

1. Make the font size bigger, then make the row height bigger, to fit the
selected font size, or select optimal height to have the spreadsheet
automatically adjust the row height for the text size, and also to auto-adjust
for multiple lines of text in a cell if you use text wrapping, and finally
adjust the cell width to fit the larger text or to determine where to wrap it.

• If it is possible to change the default font size I don't know how, but
if you create a template with the settings you prefer and save it as stationery
you can open a new document that is ready to use without having to change font
sizes etc.

2. I don’t know how Windows deals with this but I believe OO and LO are
pretty consistent across platforms (they certainly are on Mac and Linux, that
is one of their ’selling’ points), so try copying the data in the Word document
and using Edit / Paste Special / Paste Special… (in the first Paste Special
menu), and in the next dialog box select “Use text import dialog”, then OK.
Using LO on the Mac (I’ve recently switched from OO) that placed a group of tab
or return separated numbers (see below) from a text document into different
cells in the spreadsheet and made them able to be used in it (a simple copy and
paste does not do this, it ignores the tabs and puts a whole row of numbers
into a single cell). I’m pretty sure OO did the much same on the Mac and it
should be pretty similar on Windows. Expert users probably have a better way of
doing this, which could be worth learning if you are doing it often, but if you
only do it occasionally and this works for you why waste time and effort
learning to become an expert, just use the tools that you already have to hand.

123 456 789
987 654 321

This group of numbers was pasted into a spreadsheet as described above.

123 456 789
1368
987 654 321
1962

111011101110
3330

And these calculations were performed on them (the imported text size has been
adjusted to be the same as the other text in this document).

• If I have misunderstood and you are copying from a Spreadsheet to a
text document, a simple copy and paste should work, though some text resizing
and tidying up may be required. To copy largish portions of a sheet you could
make a screen pic of the portion you want to use and insert that into your text
document, but it will be displayed as a graphics object instead of being
integrated into the text. If all that you want is a particular sheet or a
selected portion of a sheet, with no other text or data that is not in the
spreadsheet itself, it may be better just to save the selected portion of the
spreadsheet as a PDF document, e.g. my wife operates a very small business and
I do her monthly invoices that way and email out the PDF documents, because we
can’t justify the cost of proper invoicing software for such a micro-business.

3. Sorry, I’m not sure what’s happening there, maybe a Windows issue or
maybe an OO setting that I’ve forgotten exists, or maybe something else
entirely.

I hope some of this may be of use to you,

Peter.

Calc Spreadsheet Questions

2022-11-06 Thread Linda Hull
I'm on Windows 10, Open Office 4.1.11.

I'd like to:

1. Make the cells and text in a Calc spreadsheet larger, easier to read.
2. Put data on a spreadsheet that appears in a Writer document. I send
simple letters, don't know page styles etc.

Are there directions somewhere or can someone explain the steps?

3. In the past, when I've saved and reopened a spreadsheet, the headings I
put in appear lower down. Is there a way to make them stay at the top?

Thanks so much!

Linda

As it seems you are choosing Windows 10 for this, try Windows Deployment
Services (the internet has dozens of sites that explain it).  (The client
should probably have a Windows Server machine anyway, to manage the deployment.

That’s ironic because Lotus123 eventually became Symphony which was built on

I'm new to Base and discovering just how ignorant I am despite 40 years
working in IT.  I have created a simple data base with three tables.
When trying to create relationships and forms it's become obvious that
some of my field definitions need to be changed.  Problem 1: how can I
display all of the variables I used to specify each field?    Problem 2:
I created a table and made a mess of it.  How can I delete that table?
DROP TABLE ... hasn't worked.  Problem 3:  The ID in my main table is a
numeric sequential number.  Can I define the field so that the number is
automatically assigned using a field type?

Background:  I'm working in OpenOffice 4.1.6 on a MacBook Pro running
MacOS 0.13.6.  My first reference is to LibreOffice 4.0 Base Handbook,
OO helps, OpenOffice Forum, then finally Google.  I assume that
LibreOffice BASE and OO BASE are sufficiently similar that LO
documentation should be relevant to OO BASE.

Hello Mike,

Don't have all your answers off the top of my head, however for an auto
incrementing id use field type Integer with Autovalue set to YES.

Re: open office questions

2019-07-19 Thread Alan B
Hi Jon,
I'm responding to offer some thoughts about your invoicing requirements. If
you've thought it through, you're all set. If not, you might want to
consider some of the following.
Will you need to track status of invoices?
 - paid / unpaid
 - partial paid and balance due
Report on invoices?
 - total invoices mailed this month
 - total of invoices paid this month
What will the volume be like?
 - a few a month or many each week?
 - how do you envision producing them? e.g. fill in spaces on a document
and print the document or fill in a form on the screen, taxes and totals
automatically calculated and then invoice printed.

OpenOffice can certainly all of it Depending on the amount of automation
you desire making it happen will be simple or require more than basic
skill. If you only need to fill out a paper invoice with no automation,
that would be a basic form in Writer. If you want automation OpenOffice can
meet the need but the system needs to be built. If you want automation and
aren't up to building it, consider an invoicing program. I searched "open
source invoice software" and got the following links which may help you
decide.
https://opensource.com/article/18/10/open-source-invoicing-tools
http://opensourcebilling.org/
https://www.bambooinvoice.net/

I hope the above is useful.

Jon, Apache Open Office is totally free. It does everything that Microsoft
does, except bleed your cash reserves. It would be ideal for your needs.
I, and 1000's like me, use it all the time and love it. Google "apache

Re: Open Office Questions

2019-07-17 Thread Doug

Jon,

I don't represent Apache OpenOffice in any official way but I can tell you
this: OpenOffice and Microsoft Word are two entirely different program
suites. Microsoft Office is a commercial suite that you have to buy but the
OpenOffice suite is completely free. The bulk of my experience is with the
word processor elements in each suite. I have found there is nothing in
Microsoft Word that I cannot duplicate in OpenOffice. I have no real
experience with the other elements of these suites so there may be something
in the accounting or data base side that you specifically need from
Microsoft. Given that OpenOffice is completely free you should at least try
it out before you make up your mind. Good luck.

1. I want the Y-axis display to start at 300

2. It would also be GREAT if the Y-axis is
scaled in increments of say 5, or 10, between
350 (start/minimum) and 650 (end/maximum).

If any of this is indeed possible, what must I do ?

o First select the chart. To do this you need to
double-click it, so you see a thin grey border,
not the eight green handles and the anchor symbol
that you get from a single click.
o Now double-click the y-axis itself or its scale
labels. Alternatively, you can right-click the
axis and select Format Axis... or go to Format | Axis >| y-Axis... .
o On the Scale tab, remove ticks from relevant
Automatic boxes, and set Minimum to 350, Maximum
to 650, and Major interval to 10.

My other questions are about
editing/revising/correcting the labels assigned to a existing graph:

1. For example, if I made a typo in the Title of
a graph, what must I do to correct the error,
w/o creating the graph from scratch?

3. Or, can I add a Subtitle to an existing graph?

o Select the chart as above.
o Right-click the chart area and select Insert Titles... .
o Add, modify, or remove Title or Subtitle.

2. Or, if a Legend is included, how can it be removed?

o Select the chart as above.
o Right-click the chart area and select Delete Legend.

Questions surrounding pythonscript.py

I have questions surrounding the pythonscript.py located within OpenOffice 3.4.
I am trying to gain a better understanding of how it is used.

What is the purpose of pythonscript.py in OpenOffice and is it required? Can it
be renamed or possibly removed without issues? What specific functionality
would be lost?

Thanks!

No you will not lose your files and you will be able to access your old
files. If you are really worried that you will you could back them up
temporarily to a USB stick.

You have not said what your operating system is. If it is Win10, have a
look at "Start" - "Settings" - "System" and under "Display" make sure
that the "Change the size of text, apps and other items" is set to the
recommended 150% or greater.

Next for some reason I hit something and my window screen and font is

Delete the first two lines from the CSV file to get the columns correct
remember that each spreadsheet looks at the first line to

find what columns to use, then open it in Calc.
Because there are a lot of spaces in front of the values it is interpret
as text not as numbers, the way OpenOffice handles text

it puts the ` in front of the number.
If you remove all the spaces it will load correctly as numbers. To save
you a lot of time there is an option with importing CSV files
tick the Detect special numbers and it will handle the values as numbers
instead of text.

If you are on MacOSX it is easy to keep different versions by renaming your
existing OpenOffice App in the Finder.

Joe;
The installation will remove 4.1.2 and replace it with 4.1.5.

If for some reason you need both versions available there is a way it
can be done but requires a lot of manual intervention and is not
recommended for the average user.

Although you don't need to clean up the program you have downloaded the
installation file probably to your download directory.
When you install OpenOffice it create a directory with installation
files normally on your Desktop these files and directory for

the 4.1.2 release are obsolete and can be deleted.

I think you have a misunderstanding of what OpenOffice does. While it
can create PDF files, it's not intended to be used as a PDF reader.

Yes. Here is one way.
o Position the cursor at the target text.
o Go to Insert | Bookmark... and give the bookmark a name.
o Select the text that you want to act as a hyperlink.
o Go to Insert | Hyperlink (or click the Hyperlink button in the
Standard toolbar).
o Under "Target in document", click the "Target in Document" button,
to the right of the Target box.
o In the "Target in Document" panel, click the plus sign against
Bookmarks to expand the list.

o Select the relevant bookmark.
o Click Apply and Close.
o In the Hyperlink panel, click Apply and Close.
Note that you use Ctrl+click to use the hyperlink.

Why do words that you've ignored in a spellcheck continue to show up
with the red squiggly underline even after you saved the file? You
take the time and address all the tagged words but it is just temporary.

I can't tell you why, but this is clearly by design.

o The Ignore and Ignore All functions are useful, despite applying
only to the current editing session. If, for example, you have a
proper name that occurs a number of times in your document but does
not occur in the dictionaries, it is useful to be able to confirm
with Ignore All that all your copies of it are identical - that you
haven't misspelled one or more of them, that is.

o If you want words not currently in the dictionary to be remembered
for next time you edit the document, you can use Add (instead of
Ignore) to add the word to your custom dictionary. The standard
custom dictionary is "standard.dic", but you can add others, so you
could even create a special dictionary for use only with a specific
document. To create dictionaries, control their use, and edit their
contents, go to Tools | Options... | Language Settings | Writing Aids
| User-defined dictionaries.

I trust this helps.

Basic Calc/Spreadsheet Questions

2016-01-12 Thread Linda Hull
Is there a written Tutorial for making charts in AOO 4.1.2? I haven't found
much.

I want to make a pie chart.

I have a list of country names and numbers:
390 CA
337 GB
286 NL
234 DE
 51KR
 46RU
 44EG

Calc appears to handle the CA GB NL as second column of data, but doesn't
know how to assign them values.

I would like the chart to have a key that shows the colors of the segment
and has the Country Code beside it:

[purple] CA
[green] GB
[yellow] NL

Is there a way to rotate the pie, so that I can pick which segments are in
front? Can the colors be changed?

How do I get a title to appear in the Chart? One time it worked. The next
time each word in the title ended up with a color marker by it, like a key;
but I couldn't make it do that again.

Separately:
I've had problems keeping titles at the tops of spreadsheets. When
reopened, they often end up below the table.

I appreciate all your help.

Sincerely,

Linda

Yes: Chapter 3 "Creating Charts and Graphs: Presenting information
visually" in the Calc Guide. See

https://wiki.openoffice.org/w/images/d/d0/0303CG33-ChartsAndGraphs.pdf .

I want to make a pie chart.

There's a section on pie charts.

I have a list of country names and numbers:
390 CA

286 NL
[...]

Calc appears to handle the CA GB NL as second column of data, but
doesn't know how to assign them values.

You need to swap the order of your columns: to have the labels to the
left of the values.

I would like the chart to have a key that shows the colors of the
segment and has the Country Code beside it:

[purple] CA
[green] GB
[yellow] NL

Tick "Display legend" in the fourth step ("Chart Elements") of the
Chart Wizard.

Is there a way to rotate the pie, so that I can pick which segments
are in front?

Reorder your data. The segments appear to be presented starting at
the top and working anticlockwise.

Can the colors be changed?

Yes - at Tools | Options... | Charts | Default Colours.

How do I get a title to appear in the Chart?

Add it in the fourth step ("Chart Elements") of the Chart Wizard.

Separately:
I've had problems keeping titles at the tops of spreadsheets. When
reopened, they often end up below the table.

Really?

You can create titles by entering them into suitable spreadsheet
cells - or suitable merged cells. You can also enter a header at
Format | Page... | Header | Edit... and similarly for a footer. I
don't see why any of these should move around.

I trust this helps.

I don't do spreadsheets at other than a trivial level, but I can tell you that
one can freeze the first rows/columns by positioning the cursor in the first
row/column one does not wish to freeze and selecting /Window /Freeze.

This functionality is part of OpenOffice, no extension required.

In Writer in OO 4.1.1:

File> New > Labels

You'll get a box with three tabs. The first tab (Labels) gives you a
panel on the right side about 2/3 of the way down the panel to select a
label format by label manufacturer and form number, *e.g.* "Avery 5160
Address".

Other parts of that panel give you the opportunity to custom define a label

Re: Just two simple questions

2015-10-18 Thread Brian Barker

At 14:01 18/10/2015 -0400, Cliff Monly wrote:

Just two simple questions

These may be a little too simple ...

1. what do I type to get a total of highlighted cells?

I'm guessing that you mean spreadsheet cells, not table cells in a
text document? And by "total" you mean the sum of their values, not
the total number of cells? And by "highlighted", you mean selected
cells - not either having a background colour, or formatted to show,
say, negative numbers highlighted in a different colour, or
highlighted differently by View | Value Highlighting?

I don't think spreadsheets work in the way that you expect. Any
formula you enter has to be entered in cell, and if you had cells
already selected, the formula would overwrite one of them. If you
created the formula first and selected multiple cells afterwards, you
would still be expecting OpenOffice to recalculate formulae every
time you made a selection or modified one. Spreadsheets don't do that.

There are ways that you can achieve something like what you seem to need:

o You can construct a formula - probably including the IF() function
- which will calculate the sum of the relevant cells based on some
criterion, without the need to select the cells to identify them.

o You can filter a column of values so as to hide some rows and leave
only the relevant rows. Note that the SUM() function will not help
here, as it will still include values in the hidden rows; but you can
use the SUBTOTAL() function with 9 as its first argument to sum only
those values that are in rows that are not hidden.

2. what do I type to get the total (multiple) of two highlighted cells?

Sorry, but I don't know what a "multiple total" is. If this question
is not the same as the first one, then I don't understand it. Do you
perhaps here mean the sum of values but in the first question you
meant the count of the values? In that case, the solutions are
similar; the equivalent to the COUNT() function that omits values in
hidden rows is SUBTOTAL(2;...).

I trust this helps.

1) example : I work from 07:30 until 16:15 = 8 3/4 hours of working time. What
do I have to do in my tabular document to receive automatically the number 8
3/4 resp. 8,75 hours of working time by subtracting the time of begin 07:30
from the time of end 16:15
in order to be able to continue calculating with this normal number, for
instance to automatically calculate my time rate by dividing my salary of
120,00 $ by 8 3/4 resp. 8,75 hours of working time = 13,71 $/hour ?

2) I know how to mark neighboring lines in a document at once in order to
change the formating ecc. BUT how can I mark NOT neighboring lines at once ???
I tried so many possibilities
but without any success. When I have to change all the same formating in a
number of not neighboring lines, I have to change the necessary formating line
by line. Very, very laborious :-(

Is there any help for me

Thank you so much !

I've seen (months/years back) another post of yours that was more

it should be noted that when i send a copy of the message to the sender, it is

We had one version where multimedia support was broken on Mac. This is

That never happened to me. If you have a way to reproduce it

Other people solved similar issues by increasing the cache for images

Non-subscriber questions

2014-08-27 Thread Scooter

Good Morning Group,

May I suggest that only LIST subscribers should be allowed to ask
questions. That would reduce all those folks who ask questions and don't
receive answers, because they are non-subscribers.

I applaud all the moderators for their efforts to help the
non-subscribers, but it seems there should be a requirement that people
should be subscribers of this LIST to ask questions or a better vehicle
to ask questions without joining.
There are a lot of intelligent people on this LIST and at Apache. Why is
there no on-line forum for AOO? That allows open questions and
answers. I assume that you are trying to promote good will for new
comers to AOO. It doesn't appear to be working.

I joined because I wanted the interaction of other users and clues to
problems and solutions of the AOO software.
I had originally got caught up in the Libre Office group list which told
me I was in the wrong place and had the incorrect Open Office software.
I corrected that error.

I think there is a limit as to how much hand-holding or baby-sitting
should be expected. There are thousands of mailing lists that offer
tech support or rather community support for a multitude of products.
Those that allow non subscribers to post and ask questions (knowing that
a very large percentage of those will never see the answers) can be
counted on one's fingers. There must be a web page somewhere pointing
to this mailing list (otherwise none of of us would have found it).
Explain it there that only registered users can post to the list because
that is the only way they can receive responses. The moderators have
plenty to do without having to verify that everyone who posts is registered.

Of course, with that comes the endless chain of complaints why can't I
unsubscribe or stop sending me these messages which also come from
users wanting someone else to do everything for them and can't be
bothered to read the unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of every
email they receive from the list. As far as hiding these comments as
part of the signatures, I've never seen an email client that hides
signatures on an original email. That would be foolish. They only hide
them on the responses to those emails because the original senders don't
need to see their own signatures. Those who say otherwise are unwilling
to admit that they are too lazy or too stupid to find and follow the
instructions.

Either way, there will be some whiners. I say let them whine!!! To
someone who claims to be a newbie and doesn't understand the jargon,
which really can be confusing to those unfamiliar with it, I would take
the time to explain in non-technical terms ONE TIME. After that, their
complaints would be relegated to an email filter. I don't know of any
email client which doesn't provide such filters.

Just my not-so-humble opinion.

If there are users who still can't cope with these methods, my opinion
is that they should find alternative methods to perform their tasks.

It is one of the options we have already investigated without success:
it is a limitation of ezmlm-idx, the software we use. It allows to send
a message when a post is rejected (i.e., spam or completely irrelevant
content), but not when a post is held in moderation or when it is
accepted (which would be the best scenario). We investigated all the
options that were in turn proposed on this list or other lists: nothing
is readily feasible.

That said, it is not impossible to get these features into ezmlm: one
needs to start from http://untroubled.org/ezmlm/ ; development is not
steady but they do apply patches (if you look, the last patch was
submitted by myself last May and integrated shortly afterwards).

  Andrea.

Thanks for the information. The bug number, by the way, is 117931.
It's probably related to the interaction between OpenOffice and the
driver for this specific printer. Upgrading OpenOffice from 3.2 to 3.3
caused printing to become *painfully* slow. Then, upgrading the HP
printer driver slightly alleviated the problem, but it's still very,
very slow.

I have two (unrelated) questions. First, I wrote a bug report way back
and was wondering if there is an (approved) way to put a bounty on
the bug?

Second, I have noticed a compatibility issue that occurs with only one
document: it (apparently) was created (by someone else) in Microsoft
Word, and displays in Mac Snow Leopard TextEdit, but does not display
correctly in OpenOffice. Is this a reasonable topic for a bug report?
(I don't quite see it as a support request, since opening the document
in TextEdit is a successful workaround; my concern is more that OpenOf-

Nothing is 100% compatible, Google Docs, etc. And like you didn't
mentioned, what is the actual issue. There are thousands of different
characteristics that goes in a document, compatibility is not a one or
two things. Just because TextEdit is compatible on that feature doesnt
mean the rest will.
