[users] Re: OpenOffice.org DRAW: PNG becomes TheGIMP20

2008-03-21 Thread Pu Taang Zomi
Dear Brian Barker and Harold Fuchs,

Thank you very much for the immediate replies.

I did what you two said. Under the Name, my file has the correct extension
(png) now.

But under the Type, it was still TheGIMP20, not PNG Image.

So I went to Google for "PNG image appearing as TheGIMP20"
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=PNG+image+appearing+as+TheGIMP20

I found a discussion on "Why Did Gimp Change The Jpeg Type To The Gimp 20?"
http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Why-Did-Gimp-Change-The-Jpeg-Type-To-20-2779-1.html

With the info from that discussion, I downloaded and installed Image Editor
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/imgeditor.zip
Now, under the Type, my files have their correct types restored. Problems
solved!

Sincerely,

Pu Taang Zomi

This is so weird. I have been trying for two days to install open

trying to do those things. I tried opening OOo and other suggestions.
I downloaded a new copy of the software, "unzipped" it (dmg file) and
put it in the Application folder, then instead of clicking the icon on
the dock bar, I doubled clicked on the application in the application
folder. Voila! It worked. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

I have enough memory (4 GB; need 600 MB) on my hard drive.

I tried the md5sums procedure but could not install the MDHashTool.
As currently stated at the URL that I was given below
(http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html)

the MDHash Tool does not work with current versions of Firefox.

In any case, I doubt the problem is a corrupted download. I
downloaded the openoffice.org 2.3 software a second time, and tried
to install it. It choked at exactly the same point as the previous
one did.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what else I could try?

Thanks,
Roger

1. If the md5sums extension won't install under your version of
Firefox, have you tried the Windows program described lower down on
the same page?

2. Is this the first time you have installed OpenOffice or are you
upgrading from a previous version? If the latter, have you exited its
Quickstarter before attempting to install the new version?
You could also try the procedure described at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 to fix a well known Windows bug
in relation to installing software.

3. Perhaps this is caused by your Antivirus program believing the
thing is a virus. To try to overcome this:

a) Disconnect your computer completely from the internet
b) Disable your Antivirus (AV) software and your firewall
c) Run the installer; you won't be able to register because you have
no internet connection so just say "already registered" or, if you
prefer, "registaer later".

d) Enable your AV software and firewall
e) Connect to the internet; never leave your computer connected to the
net if your AV software and firewall are not both running properly.

If none of the above works then I'm stuck. I think it will take a
Windows guru sitting at your keyboard and "playing" (= "creatively
analysing the situation").

I'm afraid this has nothing to do with OpenOffice. Instead you need to
configure *Windows* to show the extensions as well as the names of files
on your system. To do this:

1. Open a Windows Explorer window
2. Click Tools
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click View
5. There is a box labelled "Hide extensions for know file types"; ensure
that this is *not* ticked (checked).

6. Click Apply and then OK.
Now when you look at files Windows Explorer will show the file extension.

Excellent suggestion. Plus, if Arnie has the extra disk space it's not a
bad idea to archive the download in a folder just in case it needs to be

As others have mentioned, you can purchase on a CD from various
distributors. However, given that the internet connection situation, I'd
recommend that you try a download manager. You'll need that for
downloaded any other large files/programs anyway, so you might as well
find one that suits you. Several recommended download managers are
listed here:

These will allow you to resume the download following a timout or lost

Support can mean several different things.

Note: The following versions of Windows are known for their
monolingualism. Upgrade to Linux if you need to create multilingual
documents.

* Windows 98;

* Windows ME;
* Windows Vista Starter;
* Windows Vista Home Basic;

* Windows Vista Home Basic K
* Windows Vista Home Basic KN
* Windows Vista Home Premium;
* Windows Vista Home Premium K:
* Windows Vista Business;
* Windows Vista Business N;
* Windows Vista Business K
* Windows Vista Business KN

A: You may need an IME for the following writing systems:
(This list is not complete.)

# CJKV:
* Chinese;
* Japanese;
* Korean;
* Vietnamese;
# INDUS VALLEY WRITING SYSTEMS;
* Devangari;
* Sanskrit;
* Tibetan;
* Thai:
# BiDI WRITING SYSTEMS;
* Mongolian;
* Arabic;
* Hebrew;
# BOUSTROPHEDOUN WRITING SYSTEMS;
* Akkadian;
* Rongo Rongo;

OOo does not directly support Boustrophedoun Writing systems.
[ This can be faked/emulated by using styles.]

WINDOWS:

For international keyboard support, refer to the following articles:
* WinXP: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/xpintlsupp.mspx;
* Win2003: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/xpintlsupp.mspx;

B:  Spell Checking:

a) Install the appropriate dictionaries, thesauri, and hyphenation dictionaries.
">File >Wizards >Install new dictionaries" should bring up the tool
for installing dictionaries.
* This tool will automatically check to see if it is the most current
version. If it is not, then it will ask if you want to update to the
current version.
* The user interface for version 1.7 is in 27 languages;
* It lists roughly 120 dictionaries for spell checking;
** There are some ---probably less than a dozen --- dictionaries for
OOo that are not listed in this tool. For the most part, the unlisted
dictionaries are very new, very specialized, or very large.
* Only install dictionaries etc that you use, and need. OOo
performance can be severely degraded if too many dictionaries, etc are
installed. [My experience is that performance degradation is
noticeable at around 5 dictionaries, and is complete at around 100
dictionaries. The amount of RAM, and your chip speed will affect the
performance degradation.]

b) Create and use language specific styles;
* For each language that is used, create a set of paragraph,
character, numbering, and page styles. Use those styles when creating,
or editing documents. This way spell checking will be correctly done.
Language specific styles also allow for transparent grammar checking
from within OOo.
* A template that contains the start of language specific styles can
be found at  http://www.esnips.com/web/OOoRelatedThings.
* Uncheck "Spell check in all languages" unless you want your work to
contain spelling errors.

C: Grammar Checking

You can find a list of grammar checkers at
http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/grammar.html

You can find an article on installing LanguageTool at
http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=07/04/27/2033202

Note: Select your grammar checker according to the languages that you
use. Different grammar checkers cover different languages.

D: Fonts

">File >Wizards >Install fonts" should bring up the tool for
installing fonts for a specific user. Some versions of OOo omit this
tool.

Install one or two good pan-Unicode fonts. Code2000 is probably the
most comprehensive that is easily available.

Then install four or five fonts for each specific writing system that you use.

E: Documentation:

And you can do this in the *newsreader when viewing a newsgroup*? If so,
then you've just solved
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16913 :-)

BTW: I've found that SM2pre (newsreader) does not work with

Delivered-To: moderator for users@openoffice.org

Apparently because there are two Delivered-To's

Delivered-To: mailing list users@openoffice.org
Delivered-To: moderator for users@openoffice.org

I think it sees the first one, and ignores the second.

Sometimes I leave off some stuff so I can get your list included on the CD.

It's exactly the same. The symbol is an upper case Greek sigma which

Either buy and install Microsoft (MS) Office and use its Excel program
or download and install OpenOffice and use its Calc component.
OpenOffice is free. MS Office isn't. OpenOffice cannot yet handle the

switch back to emails.

You can be uncooperative and not do this if you wish.

Thunderbird is the most recommended email program to people asking
for email programs. Why should I change. Why can't OO.o fix the
problem of unsubscribed posters. They are the uncooperative ones.

FWIW: The next major release of SeaMonkey (SeaMonkey 2) and presumably
Thunderbird, as they both will use the same MailNews core, will
have the

ability to filter on headers:

I thought they already could. I've been using header filtering in
Seamonkey for some time. I use it to change the message header colour.

How are you doing that? SM 1.1.x currently cannot filter on specific
headers in the newsreader - only in the email headers. The problem is
that many contributors to the list use the gmane nntp newsreader instead
of subscribing to the email list. This eliminates downloading tons of
emails from this list as well as others you are subscribed to. The
problem currently is that SM and TB cannot filter by defined headers -
required to determine if the poster is unsubscribed or not. Example,
header: Delivered-To, NNTP-Posting-Host etc. If you can do that with
yours I'd sure like to know how you are doing it.

I'm currently using 1.1.8, but have been doing this for much longer
than 1.1.8 has been out. In the main mail window, click on Tools >
Message Filters and then create a new filter. In the match
selections, choose "Delivered-to" and "Contains" and place the desired
text in the next box. Then in the "Perform this action" box, chose
"Tag message" and pick whatever tag you wish. You can even create
your own custom tags in the Seamonkey preferences.

The text I filter on is "moderator for users@openoffice.org" (without
quotes).

Are you referring to the ***news*** reader part of Seamonkey? Or to the
***mail***. There is no debate about the ***mail*** reader. It has been
repeatedly agreed in this e-mail list that the ***mail*** portion of TB
and SM can already filter on headers.

The debate is ***only*** about the ***news*** reader part.

Are you saying that you are filtering on headers in the ***news***
reader part of v1.1.8 of Seamonkey?

By ***news*** reader we all mean the component that handles what used to
be called USENET news. It runs using a protocol named NNTP over port
119. On the other hand, a ***mail*** reader handles what people call
e-mail. It typically uses a protocol named SMTP and runs on port 25.

There shouldn't be an activation wizard, as OpenOffice is fully

I assume you're running Windows. That folder is created as part of the
install process and normally you don't have to directly access any files
in it. When the installation is complete, you should see an OpenOffice
folder & icons in the Start menu. If so, that folder and it's contents
are no longer required and can be deleted. If you don't see that folder
& icons, there may have been a faulty install and double clicking on
setup.exe in that folder may start the install again, with a successful
completion.

And yes, OOo users demean MS Office, here and other places.

I have to say I HATE MS Office with a passion. But that is my

That is the key, these email are our options.

I gave my opinion eariler in this thread about the IE vs Firefox

download (click on the link in the green box) and install the latest
version.

While OpenOffice is compatible with Windows 98, older computers might
not have sufficient resources to run it. Check the requirments page for
further information.

Most versions of OpenOffice can't handle those files. What you can do,
is install the free Microsoft Word & Excel viewers & Compatibility Pack,
which can read Works documents. Installing those viewers will make them
the default application for Microsoft Office document types, so you will
have to reset the file associations back to OpenOffice.

Right click on file icon

Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and

Re: [users] Installation Question??

2008-03-21 Thread web at work

I have two computers, using Window XP Home Edition operating
system. I have had Open Office software installed on one
computer for over a year and it operates great. I have tried
installing Open Office software on the second computer a couple
of different times and it will not install correctly.

I installed Norton 360 on both computers today and thought I
would try downloading and installing Open Office on the 2nd
computer again. It downloaded fine, but when I tried to install
the software I got the following message--

NSIS Error

The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.

This could be the result of a damaged dis, a failer download or
a virus.

You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a
new copy.

It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC common
line switch ( NOT RECOMMENDED )

>>

This is almost cedrtainly caused by either your Antivirus (AV) software or
your firewall believing the installer is a virus. To overcome it please
try:

1. Disconnect your computer completely from the internet (pull the
modem/router plug from the phone socket).
2. Disable your firewall and AV software.
3. Run the installer; you won't be able to register as you have no
internet

connection - just say "already registered".
4. Enable your AV and firewall
5. Connect to the internet; never leave your computer connected to the net
if your AV and firewall are not both running properly.

If this still doesn't work, come back here with details and we'll have
another think.

The idea above is a good one, but here is another solution.
DO NOT USE NORTON
Every time I buy a computer with a Norton software, I have
a lot of trouble wth the system. Every Time.

I use AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall -- both free.

I never tell people to run a system without the antivirus
running. You never know what nasties might be on
your computer. ALSO make sure XP's firewall
is turned off whenever you run some other firewall.
That is another problem sometimes.

My advice is Install AVG -- http://free.grisoft.com
and then disable/turn off Nortons. At that point
install OpenOffice.org. I think before you go back
to Norton's software, you give AVG a try. If you have
the Norton's disk, uninstall it for a while.

I would try ZoneAlarm for the Firewall as well.
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Last Time I checked
Both of these software rated higher that Norton's
antivirus and firewall options.

I have used both of these software for many years
including Win 98, Win 2000 pro, XP/home, and XP/pro.
I have is currently installed on the last 3 O/Ss and
OOo on those same machines. Always works great
for me.

Also, if you think that your copy of OOo is bad,
try downloading it from a different mirror site.

The Idea of a backup computer is a great one.
I have a "file server" machine that I make sure
has all of the software and data backups on it.
I use a laptop for my main computer, so there
is always a risk of something going wrong,
like dropping it.

Also one other piece of advice
Never buy a software package, if you can find
an equal or better one for free.

OpenOffice.org instead of MS Office
AVG instead of most paid/free antivirus ones - no charge for updates ever.
ZoneAlarm instead of most paid/free firewall software

I always go first for the free software, and then if
I cannot find what I need, then I look at the paid ones.
99% of the time I find free one that work better.

Did you actually install it? With Windows, you have to double click on

You can be uncooperative and not do this if you wish.

I'm currently using 1.1.8, but have been doing this for much longer than
1.1.8 has been out. In the main mail window, click on Tools > Message
Filters and then create a new filter. In the match selections, choose
"Delivered-to" and "Contains" and place the desired text in the next
box. Then in the "Perform this action" box, chose "Tag message" and
pick whatever tag you wish. You can even create your own custom tags in
the Seamonkey preferences.

The text I filter on is "moderator for users@openoffice.org" (without
quotes).

If you're still having trouble with the install, the "incomplete or
corrupted" issue is sometimes because your antivirus software is
complaining about a perfectly safe file. If you got the file from
www.openoffice.org (the official website -- careful, there are others
out there that may not be safe):

   * After downloading the file, completely disconnect your computer
 from the internet.
   * Turn off the antivirus software.
   * Double-click on the downloaded file and follow the instructions in
 the installation dialogs. You can generally just accept the
 defaults, but you need to think about what application will be the
 default for opening MS Office filetypes (.doc, .xls, .ppt). You
 can always change later, and both OpenOffice.org (OOo) and MS
 Office can be used on the same computer. If your new computer came
 with Office 2007 trial software, be aware that the new default
 formats for that (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) are not reliably readable
 by any other applications; you should save in the old formats with
 Save As if you use Office, so your files will still be usable
 after the trial period without buying Office.
   * When installation is complete, turn the antivirus software back on.
   * Reconnect to the internet.

To find out what the macros are you would need to read the macro code
and decide whether you feel the operations it wants to perform are
safe OR ask the person who created them what their purpose is.

It should be possible to review the macro code after opening the
document they're embedded in by selecting Tools > Macros > Organize
Macros > OpenOffice.org Basic from the menu and then, in the "Macro
from" section of the dialog box, expand the branch for the current
document and under that the branch for Standard, then select the
"ThisDocument" item and click the Edit button. That will open the
macro in the editor and make it possible to read the macro commands.

Please provide the *exact* text of the message you see.

OpenOffice doesn't require activation. Windows does, though and will prompt
you to do it. Modern versions anyway. Have you activated your Windows
installation? If you don't then I believe your Windows will stop working
after a while. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890 which seems to say
you have 30 days.

OpenOffice likes you to *register*, which is not at all the same as
activation, but it's not mandatory; if that's what you are seeing, just say
"already registered". You won't suffer in any way; it's just that the
OpenOffice folk like to keep track of the number of users and roughly where
they are.

Hello Donna,

Lot's of document types available with OpenOffice.org isn't there -
actually there is with MS Office also they just don't burden you with
displaying every possible one.

In OpenOffice.org things don't work exactly like MS Office ( you know
that already ) and the Charting functions are closely tied in with the
Spreadsheet module. But that does not mean you can't use it in Writer.

I will assume you have the latest version of OpenOffice.org, 2.3.1.

Open a writer file.
On the main menu select 'Insert > Object > Chart'.
Now you have a chart in the file.
You need to setup the data so - select the whole chart object ( careful
here you can accisdentally select just parts of the chart also ) and
right click the mouse.

From the popup menu select 'Chart Data Table'
Add your data as needed.

Now that is not the only way to do this - but it is one simple way.

You will want to check out the free users manuals available at the
OpenOffice.org wiki
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/documentation look under the
section for 'User Guides' - remember the charting functions are found in
the spreadsheet - so in the Calc Guide.

Best of luck then,

Drew

Yes, this is easily possible in Calc. Let's say your column of numbers
goes from C1 to C10. Go to C11, click in C11, and then click on the
autosum button (uppercase Greek letter sigma). The formula for the sum
of the numbers in C1 to C10 will appear. Since that's what you want,
just press Enter.

If for some reason, Calc "guessed" wrong, and you want a different
range, then all you have to do is click and drag through the range you
really wanted, and then press Enter.

Hello David,

I suppose you meen MS Excel (xls) files, not 'very large' files...
OpenOffice.org reads, edits and saves xls files. By default, it uses the
ISO-standard ODF format (ods), but you can also use the xls format.
OOo doesn't yet recognise xlsx, the new lock-in format from MickeySoft.

You can download and install from
http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
the site should determine the version you need automagically (but you'll
have to decide yourself whether you need the Java JRE, or whether it's
already installed on your system).

Hi Jack,

First, so you understand. this is a list of openoffice.org users,
helping other usres, so no definitive statements of policy here.

Each year the OpenOffice.org organization holds a conference - at the
last conferene ( 2007 ) there was a lot of talk that would make folks
expect some kind of integration with the Thunderbird email client.
Exactly how 'integrated' that would be is not anything I have
information on - I am certain it will not be a 'module', more likely a
tight exchange of data between the packages and perhaps a bundled
distribution file of some type. It is also likely that this would
include some of the extensions to Thunderbird for calendar management.

CAVEAT - This is just my reading of events, not any inside information
or knowledge.

Of course the calendar might be just the kind of baggage you are talking
about with outlook.

Hello George,

Attachment are generally stripped from the list. Please give an outside link
or simply explain what you want to show.

Calc imports csv files, which is a common way to exchange files between
database and spreadsheet programs.

Ian Barbour

Under Base you can only append new fields to dBase tables. ( You can add
fields by position into a HSQLdb database by the way - the native
embedded database type )

But then again how can a field ever be in the wrong place in a database?
If you use a form to view the table ( which is really what you should be
doing IMO ), which takes all of 5 mouse clicks to set up, then you can
arrange the columns anyway you like.
If you use a Query to output your data ( again the correct way IMO )
then you can again arrange the fields anyway you like.

AFAIK the OpenOffice.org developers have a load of other priorities, so an
integrated email client isn't for tomorrow.
It's easy to send OOo documents from within the program with your default
email client.

There are several open source email clients that you can install on your
computer for free:
Thunderbird (from Mozilla), SeaMonkey (browser+composer+mailclient, also
Mozilla), and the same Mozilla group is also working on an open source
version of good old Eudora (under the name Penelope).

Hello

That time could well be right on a slow dial-up connection. You could
use a download manger, but if you go to

you will see there are a number of people who will send you a CD at
nominal cost. We cannot recommend any specific source.

Download from here: (click on the green rectangle, normally the version you

I don't know, how it's working in MS Word ...

In OOo Writer:

(1) Go to (menu) Insert -> Frame

(2) Draw the table inside the frame;
see -> Help

(2.1) See also ->
'Drawing Tables in your Text Document'

Have you actually installed the software or only downloaded the installer
program? In the folder on your desktop, is there a "setup.exe"? If so then
you haven't installed OpenOffice yet. Run the "setup.exe"and, after you have
made a few simple choices, you will find an entry "OPenOffice" in your

Now, this may not be good for me since I haven't used it yet. I had
PowerPoint Viewer 2003 and WordViewer 2003 but made an error for I had
installed PowerPoint Viewer 2007 first. My updater went crazy and tried
install 8 updates that all failed and one manual one by me also failed. When
I looked at the dates, 2007 & 2003, I put them in backwards! 2003, then
2007, that worked!!

Since you're learning specifically about Excel, probably not. If you
were simply learning how to use spreadsheets, it would probably be OK.

Everything worked once I did a "Clean Installation" as was suggested.
Thanks, for the help!

 Hi, Manfred,

There are no error messages at all other than "not responding".
None of the modules work. I've reinstalled 2.2 and it doesn't work either.
I've just uninstalled it again and will try 2.3.

I looked at the registry entries for OpenOffice, and see numerous entries
for 2.2. I don't know how to clean everything out and start over without
reformatting the hard drive. Due to other applications that are installed,
I don't want to do this.

You may try as follows (no guarantee ...) ->

(1) Verifying in Windows Task manager, whether soffice.bin
is active. If necessary, closing the process manually.

(2) Removing the currently installed version of OOo
in 'Add/Remove programs'.

(3) Renaming the 'user directory' from to e.g.
[ see also  ->
'Starting Over with a Clean Installation'
 ]

(4) Reboot. Applying a soft 'registry cleaner' like 'CCleaner'
[ see  ->  ]

(5) If necessary, removing the remaining folders and files
in the 'program directory', that means: deleting the 'program folder'.

(6) Reboot. Installing OOo 2.3.1.

If that fails, please come back here to
(as possible with some details ...).

I really hate to go back to using MS Office and am tempted to go to
Linux if it wasn't for the high-dollar applications already owned.

No comment ...  ;-)

 Thanks for your help,

 Dean
