RE: [users] Newer

2007-02-13 Thread Nikos Mitropoulos
I don't think it's just the price (I think that we should all contribute to
OpenOffice.org in one way or another). It's mostly that OpenOffice.org is
based on Open Source. Users can change the programme to suit their needs
without having to worry about copy-rights etc. This what really can kill MS
in the market. It's also significant that other companies support Open
Source, such as IBM and HP.

You know, honestly? Given the price you pay for OOo, I'd say it's
better than Microsoft Office. When you're paying more than $200 for
anything, you can expect it to have a fwe bells and whistles.

The vast majority of the stuff that MSO offers that OOo doesn't is not
something you're going to need as an average user. OOo does everything
else just as well... and at a price I can live with!

I use Open Office v. 2.1

When copying and pasting selected text from an email to an OOo text file a
table format is introduced. When I do the same thing to a .doc file in MS
Office there are no problems and no table introduced. To use OO I have to
copy and paste to an MS Word file then copy this to the OOo file. Very
inconvenient.

Subject: [users] Save File Function Problem with OO 2.1

I am using version 2.1 of OpenOffice.org. My problem is:

I use a utility called PC Safe and Secure ( PCSS - vers 1.2), a file
encryption package supplied by www.Boomerangsoftware.Com. When I open an
encrypted file, PCSS loads, opens the encrypted file, decrypts it into a
temporary file, and then calls the relevant application, giving it the
temporary file name to work on. When I save any changes and exit the
application, PCSS then resumes control, updates changes to the encrypted
file and closes it, and then deletes the temporary file.

All this has worked well for several years with all my apps. However, when
OO Calc or Writer is the relevant application, it works exactly the same but

I cannot use the "save" function at all to save any changes - the function
seems to be unavailable for some reason. It is also noticeable that the
temporary filename does not appear in the header line of Calc or Writer,
even though it has opened the file and I am working on it. I have got around

this by using the "save as" function and saving the changes by overwriting
the temporary file, and this works.

Can you please have a look at this problem.

Thank you

Dear Chuan,

I'm not a Mac user, but please try to be more specific in describing the
problem you have. For instance, what documents you print and what not.
Also, do you get any messages?

I'm using OO with my iMAC; it prints some files but not others -- how
do I find out how to solve this problem? I have an HP laserjet and
deskjet, and I get same problems on both. Anything on the MAC prints
fine.

RE: [users] Credit Card charge of $49.90 !!!!

2007-01-15 Thread Nikos Mitropoulos
I also ordered OOo from ThinkAll and after the initial shipment they kept
sending me staff and charging my credit card. However, they stopped
immediately when I e-mailed them with a complaint.
Although I definitely like to contribute financially to Open Source
programmes, I don't like people taking advantage of me.
Now, I understand that they have a bad reputation.

You could look at Sunbird (free-standing), or Lightning (integrated with

Possible, but I doubt it. There are already some good, free, open source

Why
spend the limited funds and time to add a program that already duplicates

Selecting a language for the whole document
1.Choose Tools - Options. Go to Language Settings - Languages.
2.Under Default languages for documents, select the document language for

Dear Frank,

You have two options:
1. After you create or edit a document in OOo you can save it in MS Office
format and you can distribute it to anyone who uses MS Office. Then they'll
be able to open, read, and edit it.

2. to uninstall OOo, and if your operating system is any Windows, go to

If You delete a graphic within a paragraph that is not started at the bottom

RE: [users] Open Office Changed my MS Word Icons...

2007-01-07 Thread Nikos Mitropoulos
Dear Vin,

My guess is this: OpenOffice allows for saving in Microsoft Office format,
so that if one can also work on the a document with Microsoft application,
if one desires. However, Microsoft Office doesn't allow for saving
documents in OOo format.
If you created the documents with OOo, or if you opened them in OOo and did
not save them in Microsoft Office format, for later use with Microsoft
application, Microsoft Office wont' open your documents, because it simply
won't recognize the format.

The only solution that I can suggest to you is that you re-install OOo, open
your documents with OOo and save them in the Microsoft Office format.

I hope I've been helpful.

Subject: [users] Page 1 from different paper tray ?

Hi

Is there any way to get OO to print page 1 from a different tray to
other pages, Format->Page->Paper Tray only seems to allow for setting
printer tray for whole document.

thanks

I understand your problem correctly, this one may help: go to ,
choose , and in the pop-up window, under click the
button for and input the page-number you want to print.

already have OpenOffice 2.0 on my computer. I'd like to upgrade to 2.1.
If  download 2.1 will it overlay on 2.0, or should I remove 2.0 from my
computer and install 2.1 complete? Also, if I remove 2.0 first, will I
lose all my files? Thanks!

Dear John and Vikki

I recently upgraded to OOo 2.1 without uninstalling the old version and
had no problems.  Yet, if you still want to uninstall the old version,
you won't loose any files.  The files will be kept by the operating
system.

I have just downloaded OpenOffice but not being a computer expert, I am stuck trying to open a blank page to write on. Also, I seem to have two of most icons when I open the Open Offfice 2.1 Installation icon on my desktop. Have I done something wrong, or only partially installed?

Dear Sarah,

I may be able to help you with your first question:
After you open OpenOffice go to File menu and click New.
If you want to open an existing document, click Open and go to the
folder that contains the document.

RE: [users] Replacing Office 97 by Openoffice

2007-01-05 Thread Nikos Mitropoulos
Sorry about this. I did not mean to confuse things. I only meant to say
that Office 97 and OOo are two different programmes and Stephane may keep
both of them, is she so wishes.

Stephane, if you like to download OOo, visit
http://www.openoffice.org/
and click download

nick,

I must disagree with you. OpenOffice is capable of replacing Office 97.
There are differences between the two and they behave different, but once I
got familiar with these I see no reason to switch back.

By telling Stéphane that it cannot you might put off potential users. It's
better to point out that the two are different and guide users to the
documentation pages to make them understand the differences.

Dear Raymond

Usually, one must not delete an older version to upgrade to a new one.
Possibilities are that something else happened.
You may want to unistall OpenOffice and try to reinstall it. If this
doesn't work, you may want to download the newest version, OpenOffice 2.1

Have them install OpenOffice. It's a free download and completely legit.

Dear Stephane,

Office97 and OpenOffice are two different products. One can not replace
the other. If you want to use OpenOffice, just install it.
