[users] Open Office won't open.

2010-05-31 Thread Charles Garten
At times, when double clicking on the desktop shortcut, or even directly on the
application in the program files, open office fails to open. There is no
message given. When I restart the computer, it will usually open then but may
fail to open later on in the same session. Do you have an idea as to what may
be causing this and if it can be fixed? Thanks.

I installed X11 from the tiger install disc. I have the new macrpo/

for intel from openoffice.org. I dragged the folder to my
applications forlder. It appears installed. When I try to open it,
X11 opens, then open office starts to open, but quits half way. I
trashed the dmg, and downloaded it again. I reinstalled the dmg, and
the program. What do I need to do different?

hi there - hope someone can help.

after much trial and error, have managed to download Openoffice, but
when i go to open it, all that happens is that it comes up on the bar
at the top of the page, but that is it. No documents, or programmes,
or anything. Even when I double click on the icon, nothing happens. i
have checked that it has actually been downloaded, and it says it is
there, but why is it not opening!? Getting very discouraged.

I am using a Mac OS X 10.3.

If you are using a windows machine then probably the soffice.bin has not
closed probably from the last session. Use the taskmaster to see if
this process is still active, and if it is then kill it. OpenOffice.org
should open normally the next time you try to launch it.

PS -- "taskmaster" = Task Manager (via Ctrl-Alt-Del), Processes tab.
Find and end any soffice.bin process, which is easiest to do from a list
sorted in alpha order. There may be soffice.exe and other OOo processes,
but they should all close when the soffice.bin is gone.

Tip:

A better way to tell people how to open the Task Manager on any version
of windows (Windows 98 through 7) is:

CTRL-SHIFT-ESC

I just installed OOo on an eMac running 10.4.7. When I tried to open
it, I got a message about a problem with X11. Do you know if you have
X11 installed? It's not part of the basic installation package. If
you have it installed, it should be in Applications -> Utilities.

If not, insert your system install disk, scroll down to "optional
installs", click to open, click to continue, agree, continue, until
you come to a list of things to install. Click on the triangle next
to "Applications," check on "X11" and install. Of course make sure
not to have any applications running and install from an
administrator account.

This solved the problem for me.

When I choose force quit it shows Open Office as a droplet. Is that normal?
How can I get this thing to work once and for all?

As for the X11 window that opens up everytime, I tried to type the command

Just one more thought... you didn't accidentally download the version

I had the same problem, and Christopher Frank responded with the
following fix - which worked for me:

The suggested workaround:
Open the terminal application and type:

sudo mkdir -p /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF.bad

enter your password

sudo mv /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/Vera*.ttf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/
fonts/TTF.bad

the code will create a new folder "TTF.bad" and will copy all "Vera"
fonts to this folder. This must be done with administrator "root"
rights (sudo)

Good Luck

You might start by telling us how you obtained OpenOffice and what
operating system you're running. However, generally you download the
install file and then run it. That installs OpenOffice on your computer
and adds it to the menu.

Hello Sam,

Just to be sure on the versions side:
• did you install X11 for Panther (Mac OS X 10.3.x; 10.3.9 in your case),
available at the Apple website?
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html
version is 1.0 (see X11 > About X11)
• did you install OpenOffice.org 2.1.0, the most recent running on Panther
(OOo 2.4 doesn't run on Panther, only on newer Mac OS X's, Tiger and
Leopard, 10.4 and 10.5)
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11-103.html

Only the combination of these versions will run on your Mac PowerPC with
Panther.

If you have these installed, something else must be wrong... come back to
this list if this is the case.

Are you using a Windows system? If so, there are sometimes leftover
instances of the soffice.bin process that confuse OOo into thinking it
already is running when it isn't. To clear this up without having to
restart your computer, you can use the Task Manager, on the Processes
tab, to end any soffice.bin you see there (which will also end any
associated soffice.exe processes). OOo should then start normally again.
Ordinarily, closing all OOo windows takes care of this, but sometimes
(for instance, if OOo ended abnormally) this doesn't happen. It is
curious, though, that this seems to happen every time for you. Are you
by any chance also using Lotus programs?

Re: [users] Open Office won't open/need expert advice

2006-08-30 Thread Fran Mennick
I understand why you must feel frustrated at this point! I'm not an
expert, just a Mac user who did manage to install OOo and get it up
and running last week.

It sounds like you've got X11 correct. I just click on the yellow
light in the upper left-hand corner of the X11 window and let it drop
to the Dock, it doesn't bother me then. I figure it's best to leave
it open in case it ever gives me some kind of error message.

I have not tried to force-quit OOo or its Install, so I can't help
you there.

I'm running 10.4.7 on an eMac (obviously PPC, not Intel). I
downloaded and installed all the software updates after installing
from the DVD. Then when I tried to install OOo, I got a message that
I didn't have X11 installed. When I tried to download X11 from the
Apple site, it said I couldn't do that because I already had a newer
version of X11 installed. I couldn't find it anywhere, but Spotlight
could. I dragged it from the Spotlight window to the trash, secure
emptied the trash, then re-installed X11 from my DVD, after which it
appeared in my Utilities folder. Then OOo worked fine. When you re-
installed the OS, did you get the software updates? I don't know if
that would help or make things worse (since I had to trash X11 then
and re-install it from my DVD), I'm just sharing what worked for me.

When I downloaded OOo, two icons appeared on my desktop. I forget if
I installed OOo from the Disk Image or from the other one, or if it
just opened when I clicked on its icon, (I really should write these
things down when I do them, as a "just in case" for later).

I have to run right now, but here are some links that might help:

the mini How-To can be downloaded from:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/ooo-osx_downloads.html

the small How-To can be downloaded from:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/support.html

There is a giant-sized manual somewhere that someone on the list
pointed me to, that covered all the different operating systems, and
I found the answer to my problems in an appendix that applied to Mac
OS problems. I downloaded it as a PDF file and can't find the link to
right now - I can send you the PDF file off-list later today or
tomorrow morning if you want it and no one else points you to it in
the meantime.

"List of OpenOffice.org Mac OS X issues and problems" is at:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/
List_of_OpenOffice.org_Mac_OS_X_issues_and_problems

but I don't think installation problems are covered there.

Hopefully someone more expert will help at this point... if you can,
be patient, don't fork out the hundreds of US$$$ for that other
office suite yet. OOo really does work on a Mac, the open-source
community really is great, but sometimes you have to put in a bit of
time instead of $$$.

When I choose force quit it shows Open Office as a droplet. Is that
normal?

How can I get this thing to work once and for all?

As for the X11 window that opens up everytime, I tried to type the
command

they mention in the setup guide to no avail...

[users] Open Office won't open, won't quite, won't drag to trash

re: Open Office won't open, won't quite, won't drag to trash

Hello,

Last year I installed open office 2.4 mac. It didn't work, and now
don't need it.

So I've dragged the X11 Icon to the trash. But I cannot drag the
remaining OO 2.4 "Icon" from the "Dock" to the trash.

Nor could I get OO to open or quit or do anything but have a small
black and white round icon show up and occasionally do a quarter turn.

So no matter what I do, I can't get rid of the OO icon in the dock.
Also, I can't even find the openoffice application in the applications
folder. Perhaps did it install to the wrong folder. How can I find
and fully delete open office 2.4

Many thanks,

Barb

Hi Barb

Sorry for the late reply.

But I cannot drag the remaining OO 2.4 "Icon" from the "Dock" to the trash.

To remove an icon from the dock, you don't drag it to the trash, you just
drag it off the dock. The it will vanish in a puff of smoke!

[users] Open Office Won't Open 0n my Mac Pro OS X 10.4.10 with X11 or Otherwise

2007-07-20 Thread admin
Dear Users at Open Office Org.

I have attempted several times to download your OOo .2.2.1 MacOSXIntel
install en-US.dmg on my Mac Pro OS X 10.4.10 with and without X11 through
Firefox, Version 2.0.0.2. The download goes smoothly but when I click to
open a pop up window reads:

   "Warning"

"The following disk images failed to mount"

Image Reason
OOo.2.2.1.MacOSXint not recognized

I am familiar with your product, having downloaded it to my PC last
December . It works just swell and thanks for that. Because it works so
well I wanted to put in on my Mac as I am converting (or trying to) from
MS. I write for a living and wanted Open Office, as, at least on my PC,
it works a lot better (i.e., faster, more efficiently and more
conveniently) than the Apple iWorks word processor program Pages.

I have tried several times to download to Mac, dropping the Icon, when one
appears into Applications. No luck. I downloaded X11, redownloaded Open
Office, again to no avail. I have read your FAQ and perhaps missed
something but did not find a resolution. I went to the Apple page you
referenced but there was no advantage in that either.

I have, and so contacted, Apple Care, and was told by the technician,
after some hunting, that he was not able to assist me (although he claimed
to personally use Open Office) because he wasn't familiar with the
problem and Apple does not have support files for Open Office (however,
they do for other ".dmg" files such as Firefox).

The Apple technician suggested that I contact you. I had hesitated to do
so as I didn't want to bother folks who are already doing so much BUT, I
do want to use Open Office on the Mac, as I'm hoping it will make it
possible to work effectively.

Can you advise me? Please, keep it simple. I use a computer to make a
living but that doesn't mean I understand them or their ever changing
jargon.

Thank you again for Open Office

Sincerely,

John
