Why do you still use the very old OpenOffice.org 2.0?

And what do you mean when you say ”move cells”? I have never been able
to do that with the arrow keys alone.

I ws pretty sure I had done it before, but just now confirmed it on my
Ubu 3.2.0 and it worked fine. I selected three contiguous cells, then
placed the mouse pointer on the very edge of the selection and moved
it down to the next row, then back where they belong. Duck soup!

Yes, the mouse, but you was asking about the arrow keys?

Sorry, I realized this after posting the reply to the OP. Helps if you
[thoroughly] read the original query, doesn't it? :-(

And placing the mouse pointer at the edge is an Excel thing, you don't
need to do that in OpenOffice.org. Just place it anywhere in the cell
range and move it. If you want to move a single cell, you need to make
sure it is highlighted, for example by selecting two cells and then move
the mouse pointer back to the first cell again without releasing the
mouse button, or by Shift+Click on the cell you want to highlight and
then move it.

I also went back and confirmed this after clicking Send. I very seldom
have the occasion/need to move cells, but this -- like so many other
things -- is so much easier in OOo than in MSO. Thanks for the
Shift+Click tip for moving a single cell. I had never used or known
about that one. I usually just copy/pasted, then deleted original cell
contents.

Also, I'll admit that, while I've used Writer for years (due to the ease
of creating an alphabetized index), I hadn't really used Calc all that
much until my switch to Linux. FTM, I was never really what one could
call a 'power' user of Excel!

What is the full name of the downloaded file from www.openoffice.org? You may be able to rename it

It does not appear to be a virus. It maybe spam as the file is the same

Hi Lisa:

As other volunteers on the list have commented, the OpenOffice suite is free
and you shouldn't have had to pay more than a small handling charge if, for
example, you got a CD. However, it's another comment in your message for help
that intrigues me, namely that you got OpenOffice to handle photos. Now, as
Sigrid has already commented, OpenOffice will handle photos in the same sense
that, say, Microsoft Office will, that is, you can use the programs to put
together a document which includes one or more photographs, but it is not a
program like Picasa, for sorting and sharing photos, or like Photoshop or Gimp,
for editing them and changing the format.

But what interests me is that we have had a number of inquiries on the list
recently about OpenOffice, in which people have been wondering how to use it
for photos, videos and the like, and I wonder if you would be willing to take
the time to tell us how you came to look at OpenOffice for this purpose. Who
suggested that OpenOffice might be able to open your photos (what format are
they, by the way?), and how did you find the site where you purchased the
program. Did the site have indications that it could be used for handling
pictures and/or video?

Someone has obviously got the wrong idea about OpenOffice, and it would be very
useful to people such as yourself if we could get to the bottom of why people
are choosing OpenOffice for this purpose.

And on a final note, since you have OpenOffice on your computer now, why not
give it a try? It's as easy to use as Microsoft Office, your documents will
normally take up only a fraction of the space, you can exchange them with your
friends and other contacts who may use Microsoft Office if you save them in
Office format, but most importantly, OpenOffice is free when it comes time to
upgrade. You can always have the latest version simply by downloading it. So
stick with us a while, and see if you don't get hooked on OpenOffice.

I feel sorry about you paying for OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org is a
free download, that you can get at http://openoffice.org/ If you paid
more than a few dollars (for the CD or DVD), then you fell prey to

OpenOffice.org is a office suite that contains a word processor,
spreadsheet, presentation and drawing program. It does not contain a
component, that you can use for image manipulation. If you need a
program to manipulate your pictures, then try the GIMP. You can get a

OpenOffice.org is a free (as in beer, and as in speech) download without
any payment requirement. If you paid someone for openoffice.org, except
for some nominal fee if you purchased a CD with openoffice.org on it,
then you were ripped off. You can try to recover your money from

Openoffice.org is a suite of office productivity products, word

photo editors, such as GIMP available from open source.

Looking at the files in /usr/share/locale/ you can see the format
string. Wouldn't be surprised if it was identical to that described by:
$ date --help

In your home dir copy and paste one to play with. Rename and edit with
(insert favourite text editor) or hexedit if need be.

That makes perfect sense.

No, my short date format is set as "-MM-DD" in KDE's System
Settings. I wonder, might OOo only read the Gnome setting, and being
non-existent OOo is defaulting to MM/DD/YY?

It is all set to Default.

Ah, yes, changing that to Dutch does change the default date format to
DD/MM/YY. Must I now go through all the settings to find which has the
short date format of -MM-DD? Or can I simply configure it
somewhere (even in locale outside OOo)?

Exactly, neither of the locale-based formats use the MM/DD/YY format:

How exactly can one see what the differences are? I actually would not

In my understanding OO.o takes the setting for date input format from
your computers "short date" locale setting by default (thus my input
date format is 31/12/99). This i believe is sensible as the date is best
entered in a familiar short format. Is this not the case in your
computer? (Check"Tools- Options... Language Settings- Languages"). Can
you set the Locale Setting value to a different country and report back
if this makes a difference?

And IIUC the format for calc cells can be set seperately at "Format -
Cells... Numbers - Language" (not tested here).

In linux compare:
$ date
$ date +%c (taken from locale)
$ date +%D
$ date +%x (taken from locale)
$ date -I
It may be possible to set the locale date format strings (long or short)
for some computers to a preferred non-standard option. You could create
a custom localization and tinker with it (especially in linux - see
/usr/share/locale/). But this would be a last resort. In addition my
linux box has three locales possible for New Zealand. I am not going to
explore the difference, though i do believe it has more to do with the
character codeset in use than aything else(UTF-8, ISO-9950-1 and
default).

Calc shows "-MM-DD" in the cell, and "MM/DD/" in the formula

These are the bugs as I see them:
1) The default OOo date display is not the same as the locale's date

2) The edit date format is different than the format used for display.

I use the Dutch locale for -mm-dd dates. If you insist that you
are entering dates in your local locale's format, then I will
experiment with a new user account and see what I can come up with.
What distro are you using? I am on Kubuntu 9.10 at the moment.

I have some users who need a different OOo default than their locales'
default. I agree that the OOo default should by default be the locale
default, but that should be configurable. Therefore the hierarchy
would be:

1) Locale default
2) OOo default (if configured)
3) Cell Formatting (if configured)

While in the general sense I understand the issue regarding document
sharing, note that it is already possible to override the date formats
for individual cells. Therefore, this part of the scheme is actually
describing current OOo behaviour.

Not ok : here I think you generate an issue for OpenDocument format
because, if I understand well, you need to store the input format in the
file. Input format should be relative only to the user interface.
Another user should be able to enter dates with its own input format
without knowing anything about an input format related to this file. So
input date format should be defined only at OOo's UI level, in the same
way as the decimal separator.

Naturally, they are related as the both discuss the date format.

Bug #5556 mentions the fact that the input line for dates differs from
the configured date format. I can understand where that would be
useful (in fact, I would use it often) however in the current case the
input format is the US date format, which is not known outside the US
and is counter intuitive (the smallest units are in the middle, not on
the left or right side). This leads to dataloss as OOo interprets the
dates not as the user intended when entering them.

> And I think that the current behaviour is better than the one which is

Only if you like entering dates in US format only. I agree that
entering dates in format XYZ then displaying dates in format X'Y'Z'
would be great, so long as one could configure the two formats. For us
non-USians, the US date is confusing (do US watches show the hour in
HH:SS:MM format?) and dangerous (leads to data loss).

I want this behaviour (it incorporates issue 72229 as well as 5556):

The user configures two OOo-wide (Calc, Writer, etc) settings:
a) The default date format for entering dates
b) The default date format for displaying dates
Both of these settings could be overridden in Calc's Format Cell
dialogue and the Writer equivalent.

Should I file a spec with this behaviour suggestion?

In that case Calc works as designed so #5556 is not a bug. From my point
of view issue 72229 is a duplicate of 5556.
And I think that the current behaviour is better than the one which is

Hi,

I just added the following comment to this issue (sorry for my bad
english) :

I like current behaviour: when I need dates I prefer format J and
it not very easy to type "dimanche 15 novembre 2009" instead of 15/11/09 as I
should do if I had to type the same thing that which is displayed.

I suggest to give the user the possibility to define an "input date format"
which have to be distinguished from "display date format".
Input date format would be defined in Tools > Options > Language settings >
Languages, in similar way than decimal separator, but with an input field and a
default value equal to the locale standard.
It should be also important that this input date format would be displayed (read
only) in each dialog where the user can define a display date format, so that he
would be aware of the difference.

Additional comment : I do not know if it is easy from a programming
point of view to make variable input date format.

What operating system are you running? On Windows, you simply download
the file, double click on it and after installations, the icons should
be in your start menu. Also, version 3.0 is out now, which fixes a
problem with recent versions of Mac OS.

Hello again,
You are right. I opened the file with an archive manager and there is
definitely some more text in it.

This is an excerpt of what meta.xml contains:
  OpenOffice.org/1.9.79$Win32
OpenOffice.org_project/680m79$Build-8876$CWS-ooo20beta
  2006-05-25T09:27:27

  2006-11-14T12:39:37
  it-IT

  PT14H57M43S
...
meta:object-count="0" meta:page-count="1" meta:paragraph-count="18"
meta:word-count="181" meta:character-count="1352" />

So there are 18 paragraphs, 181 words and 1352 characthers.

I guess there may be a way to recover the contents by working on the
contents.xml file, but I wouldn't know how to do it without a painful
copy & paste operation... maybe create another document and replace
the contents.xml of the new file with that of this file?

Cheers,

Michele

Why not save in both ODP and PPT formats. Unless it's a really huge
presentation you should have plenty of room for both. That way, people
with OpenOffice or StarOffice can view it in the native ODP format and
Microsoft Office users can view the PPS file with PowerPoint. For those
with neither, you can of course recommend OpenOffice. You could even
include a README.TXT with a brief description of the files and
instructions for downloading and installing OpenOffice.

Hello,

If you do not have animations, I suggest you use pdf or html. This
should maximize the audience.
If you have added animations, then you can try swf although it
requires macromedia flash.

You can also save each single slide as an image and then play the
sequence in one of the many programs doing a slide show.

Actually if you do not have space issues (and I guess that would not
be a problem if you have one presentation only) you can save it in
multiple formats on the CD or DVD. Even better you can burn on the CD
or DVD the latest version of the OpenOffice.org installation program
(this is perfectly legal) and invite people to give the program a try.

Cheers,

Michele

Three additional ways come to mind: MS PowerPoint 97/2000/XP (.ppt),
flash, or PDF. (The last two are exports while the PowerPoint would be
created by using File > Save As.) With flash, the person has to click the
picture to advance to the next slide.

[users] Please help with bibliography

2008-01-11 Thread HG
Hello!

First of all, yes I've tried to Google the whole Internet for this
answer :-) And no, I did not find solutions. So, apologies, if this is
a FAQ that I just didn't find.

My (current) problem is bibliography. More specifically, the
formatting of it. In the bibliography I am required to list the
entries like this:

Author1
2002 The name of the publication and all other
  relevant thins

Author2
2003 The name of the publication and all other
  relevant thins

With above, I mean that there is a tab after the year but that
the next line is also intended at the same level. I know how to put
the tab in the format and I guess the indentation can be done using
the paragraph styles. But how on earth do I get the new line after the
author?

Another question, can I limit one bibliography to only contain one
types of publications? I need to have different sub headers between
all different types of publications. Of course, I can do this manually
(sorting helps here, yes) right in the end when everything else is
ready, but... any ideas?

And then the third one. How reliable is the 2.3.1 bibliography? I am
storing the entries to the file (as I'm changing the file between
systems with a USB-stick) and I'm very sure that couple of times, the
new entry I just created just disappeared. The link was there, but it
was empty (i.e. "[]"). Are they going to disappear on me?

Re: [users] Please help! Working with figures

2007-08-27 Thread Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

Desilets, Alain wrote:

Dear Andrew, thank you for your detailed answer (especially since you said you
din't have much time available ;-).

Position the image vaguely where you want it, right click on
it, and chose anchor as character. The image will now act as
a character so it will move with the text.

Hum... What happens when the paragraph moves around (because of insertions and
deletions) and the figure ends say, at the bottom two lines of a page where it
can't fit?

My own approach to positioning figures is to put them at the top or bottom of
the page closest to the paragraph that introduces them. I know lots of people
who use this approach, so I'm surprised that neither MS-Word nor Open Office
have an anchoring option to do it.

As it is now, what I do (in both MS-Word and Open Office), is to anchor the
figure to the page where the introducing paragraph is orginally, and then, move
them to a different page manually if ever that paragraph moves to a page too
far from the original page. Doing these manual checks is a real pain. I really
wish that either MS-Word or Open Office supported that anchoring strategy.

You can choose to anchor them as you desire, just learn the differences
so that it will behave as YOU want.
Now, you want to place the caption below the figure. Your
natural inclination is to right click and choose Add Caption.

This doesn't work for me. When I insert the picture, it automatically gets a
caption. If I do right click, Caption, I get a dialog box for editing the
caption, but what it does is to create a second caption below the automatically
generated one. Kind of strange, because I cannot imagine any circumstances
under which a user would want two different captions for a same figure.
Presumably a bug in Open Office?

This is because your copy has been configured to automatically insert a
caption. This is not the default, so someone changed it.

This is probably under

Tools > Options > Writer > Captions

but that might not be until OOo 2.3, which should release in about a week.

On the caption line, do the following:

1. Enter the text "Figure "

2. Use Insert > Fields > Others. Click on the Variables tab.

3. In the Types list on the left, click on "Number Range".

Neat. That's one way to have figures be labeled as "Figures" instead of "Illustration".

But it seems a bit convoluted compared to the other suggestions that I have
been given.

I think that you can auto-caption using the Illustration variable or the
Figure variable. Ultimately, this is just the name of the variable that
is used.

Enough for now.

Again, thank you for your help.

Maybe you can help with my next problem.

I need to position two figures side by side, and have them aligned, i.e. each
take up half of the width of page, and have their captions aligned vertically.

I managed to do that by putting the figures inside a two columns table, but I
can't figure out how to anchor a table to a page.

If you want them side by side (as it were), I expect you to anchor them
as a character inside of a table. If you want them to float, then place
the table in a frame and let the frame float. After you are finished,
you can modify the table properties to NOT show the grid lines, but it
is probably easier to manipulate the table if you start with the grid
lines visible.

Dear Andrew, thank you for your detailed answer (especially since you said you
din't have much time available ;-).

> Now, you want to place the caption below the figure. Your

Neat. That's one way to have figures be labeled as "Figures" instead of
"Illustration".

But it seems a bit convoluted compared to the other suggestions that I have
been given.

Re: [users] Please help! Working with figures

2007-08-25 Thread Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

Little time, so I will be brief and not supply all details.

You already know how to insert a picture something like Insert > Picture
> From File. You can also just paste the image into the document.

The picture is anchored to the page or paragraph (I don't remember
which), which means that it can float around.

Position the image vaguely where you want it, right click on it, and
chose anchor as character. The image will now act as a character so it
will move with the text.

First, consider how to position the graphic as it is. It is anchored as
a character, so it will stay between the two paragraphs around it. I
create a paragraph style for my figures. I always format the paragraph
containing the figure using the figure style that I create. I can use
the style to center the image in the paragraph. You can also just choose
to center that paragraph manually, but it is not the long term good
solution if you have many figures.

Double click on the graphic to open the graphic configuration dialog.
You can change the image size and such from the dialog.

Now, you want to place the caption below the figure. Your natural
inclination is to right click and choose Add Caption. If you do this,
the figure will be placed in a frame with the caption below it. You can
then anchor the frame as a character as you desire. If you do this, it
is perhaps not as importation that the figure is anchored as character
because it is stuck inside the frame. You then need to figure out how to
format things inside the frame so that it looks like you desire. there
are advantages to doing this, but I personally dislike it (personal
preference). So, I will not bother detail how to go from here...

What I do, is manually insert the caption below the figure. First,
remember that whole figure paragraph style? Well, one of the things you
can mark is "keep with next paragraph". this says that if there is room
for the image but not for the caption, then move them both to the next page.

I create a paragraph style for the figure caption. I can set the
formatting style as desired, including space above, below, etc. From
what you said, I would center the text. You can also manually set this
for the paragraph. it is, unfornately, a bit more work to add the caption.

On the caption line, do the following:

1. Enter the text "Figure "

2. Use Insert > Fields > Others. Click on the Variables tab.

3. In the Types list on the left, click on "Number Range".

4. In the center column, select Figure.

5. The Name field at the bottom now says "Figure". For the value, enter
"Figure + 1".

6. click Insert and then close the dialog.

7. You should now see the text "Figure 1". Finish out the text so that
it reads something like: "Figure 1. Inserting something or other where I
want it".

Although this sounds difficult, after you do the first one, the next
ones are easier.

Copy the first caption and paste it somewhere else. It will now read
Figure 2. .

Enough for now.

then shown the following dialog:

The field at the bottom of this dialog was initially empty, but when I typed
the legend in the Caption field at the top, that legend got appended to the
bottom field, so that it nowe contained the proper caption "Illustration 1:
Wiki markup for a Wiktionary page". So I assumed that once I clicked OK, I
would end up with the proper caption and legend below the image. But to my
surprise, what I got was this:

http://voicecode.iit.nrc.ca/VoiceCode/uploads/TwoCaptions.gif

In other words, OO created a SECOND caption and added it above the first one,
so that my caption now looks like this:

Illustration 2: Wiki markup for a Wiktionary page
   Illustration 1:

No matter what I did, I was not able to get rid of the legend-less
"Illustration 1:" caption, nor to renumber the "Illustration 2: Wiki markup for
a Wiktionary page" caption so that it would say Illustration 1.

Just then my 15 year old son who had to learn how to use OO at school walked
by. When I told him about my problem, he laughed and told me I was in for a
rough ride. He then told me that inserting an image from file using the menus
as I did never worked properly for him, but that he eventually figured out a
way to do it by draggin the image from Internet File Explorer to OO.

So I did this, and this time I got something very similar to what I had gotten
when trying to do "insert from file" except that there was no caption at all
below the image. So now, I right clicked on the image and clicked on the
Caption menu. Again, I entered the legend in the Caption field as in this image:

http://voicecode.iit.nrc.ca/VoiceCode/uploads/CaptionDialog.gif

I clicked OK. This time, I got something that's pretty close to what I want:

http://voicecode.iit.nrc.ca/VoiceCode/uploads/ProperCaptionButNotProperlyPositioned.gif

In other words, I only get one caption, and it says the right thing:

Illustration 1: Wiki markup for a Wiktionary page

But there are still two problems.

First, the caption is positioned immediately below the image, and it looks a
bit like shit. I would like to have a blank line between the image and the
caption.

Second, I would like the caption to be centered with the image.

I haven't been able to figure out how to do the centering bit, but my 15 year
old son told me about a workaround he's devised to insert a blank line between
the image and the caption.

Basically, you insert a second blank caption on the figure, i.e. you do right
click on the image, then Caption, then fill the dialog as follows:

http://voicecode.iit.nrc.ca/VoiceCode/uploads/EmptyCaptionDialog.gif

Note that you have to make sure to insert that empty caption BEFORE you insert
the real one, because otherwise, the empty caption ends up after the real one,
instead of between the image and the real one.

Oh, and if you screw up at any point in that whole process (ex: you do a typo
in the real caption, or you insert the real caption before the empty one), you
have to erase the picture and start from scratch, because there is no way to
modify a caption after it has been added to a picture.

I can't believe that it's this har

Have you tried to increase the screen resolution (if it's not already set to
max)?

Have you tried to use the keyboard to "press" the start button? Maybe you
can navigate to it (even if you can't see it) with the TAB button and then
press Enter?

Have you tried to move the window down a bit, so you can see the upper part
of it, then making it smaller, moving it up a bit again, making it even
smaller and so on until the window fits on your screen? Maybe this isn't
possible, I don't know, but it might give you some ideas.

Two things to try which may help resolve your issue.

In both cases make sure all OOo (OpenOffice.org) programs are closed,
including the OOo "Quickstarter" icon in the taskbar tray.

1. When the Document Recovery dialogue appears, press the "Esc" key on
   your keyboard.

Alternatively

2. From the Windows "Start" button select "Run..." and type:
"soffice -norestore" (without the quotation marks)
   in the the command box.
When OOo starts, go to the File menu and select "New -> Drawing".

Hope this helps

CC'd copy to OP.

OOo 1.0.1 is an old version of OpenOffice.

Download and install the newest version. Better import and export of MS

Also, you get the benefit of ODF file support and many added/improved tools.

It is free so cost is not an issue.

Wow that's an old version of OpenOffice. You should really upgrade - there
are plenty of benefits to the newer versions.

I downloaded the .sxw file and everything opened fine (text and pictures).
However I'm using OOo2.2. I saw that there was a pdf version on the site as

You could try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/EN-US/. It's a

Error 1995 seems to be quite common lately. It is cause by having
an anti-virus program running during the install. Sometimes a
firewall running will cause the same problem.

Try this in the order listed:
1) Physically disconnect the computer from the Internet (phone wire or
RJ45 cable [LAN]).

2) Exit your anit-virus and firewall programs if they are running.
3) Install OpenOffice.org
4) Restart your anti-virus and firewall programs. Make sure they are

{0B8A081-C718-4AEB-9D35-0D5DD781C66A"

The secound I get is:

Error 1935. An error occurred during installation of assembly
'policy.1.1.cli_types,publicKeyToken="ce2cb7e279207b9e",version="7.0.0.0",culture="neutral",Please
refer to Help and support for more information'

After this OpenOffice will not install and stops.

I'd look at the site for more information, but I didn't find any.

Good luck.

I think the original document may be required and it will need to be
opened by Excel as well as Calc to see what gets deleted.

Hard to say without knowing what those features are. When loading xls
files, sheet-local named ranges are converted to global ones. Sheet
protection passwords are lost. But I don't know if your problem is one
of these.

Howard:

If you wish to remove the OpenOffice.org program from your Mac, it is
very easy. However, before you do so, I would like to know why you are
doing this. I would like to know about good and bad experiences with
OpenOffice.org for the Mac (I am NOT interested if you are NOT using a
Mac and will not respond to bad experiences on other platforms/operating
systems.)

Steps to remove OpenOffice.org from your Mac (applies to 2.0 versions
after 2.0.3):

1. Find the OpenOffice.org 2.0 item in the Applications folder. Drag
this to the Trash.
2. Find the Library item under each of your installed users (do this
one at a time.) Open the Application Support folder and locate the
OpenOffice.org 2.0 folder. Drag this folder to the Trash.
3. Empty the Trash for each user.

You didn't mention your os. In Linux, I use pdftohtml to
convert to .html, then open it in oo and edit.

There are probably 20 better ways to do it, but it works
for me.

OpenOffice can create, but not edit PDF files.

Re: [users] please help

2006-09-06 Thread Paul

There are plenty of available PDF's readers. Adobe is normally the
selected one, but google for a full list.

If you want to edit PDF's, OOo cannot do that. Again there is some
software available that can do that as well - google will assist with
that as well.

 1. Check that your backup file is okay
 2. make a copy of the damaged file
 3. post the damage file on your website and post the URL to the
list so the volunteers can look and possibly help.
 4. Using a zipfile utility for your OS, and check that Content.xml
has your data. Instructions are in

http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/OOo2.x/user_guide2_draft.pdfChapter 14
titled "How to recover content from a
Openoffice.org file"

Hope this helps.
