Re: I do not like the new tapestry logo (constructive criticism)
BTW, I found the source of the unicorn in the new logo. It's from a 500-year-old tapestry in a French museum. http://www.musee-moyenage.fr/ang/pages/page_id18373_u1l2.htm (Navigate 'up' and to the first panel to get more info.) Here's an idea: |T|apestry, where |T| would be a "decorated" character in a box that could be used as a logo. Cheers, Nick. Well, I think it's probably a little esoteric. :) Maybe it isn't a good logo if you don't know the stories about the fantastic memories elephants are supposed to have. For the record, that is what I have always guessed the Postgres logo to symbolize. Perhaps there's another story to it. Re: I do not like the new tapestry logo (constructive criticism)
Perhaps the logo should be related to how Tapestry apps are built by putting components together, something like the building blocks seen for wxwidgets or code::blocks: http://www.wxwidgets.org/images/logo9.gif http://www.codeblocks.org/img/splash.jpg But blocks are cliche, boring and corporate. I like the old logo. :) On Tuesday 16 May 2006 03:13, Nick Faiz wrote: > The Postgresql elephant is a terrific logo because it suggests > elephantine memory. Re: I do not like the new tapestry logo
The logo contest is not a bad ideia, after setting the guidelines of what it should convey. The old tap logo is really in need of it's due rest. The new, well I wasn't quick to get to what it meant. Although that's not that uncomom. A few examples we all know: - mySQL (someone has allready mentioned before) - PostGreSQL (an elephant?!?!?) ...and I'm sure many more if we think about it. The catch is to make it mean something and that people get it. Also I agree that the unicorn in it's current pose is not very good. A unicorn also has a conotation of power, being mitical animals. Not just the fary tales mentioned. They appear in many ilustrations with very muscular bodys. A horse is a powerfull animal, but this unicorn is a bit thin, a bit weak, a bit feminine as someone has allready said, and pointing upwards is not that good idea. So, a good explanation on the unicord conotation, a refinement on the design to make it more powerfull, a new pose and well, we could think more about it from there. IMHO of course! Very good response Paul! Negative reaction is very important to look at when people are genuinely seeking for input rather than for corroboration. IMO logo should be either completely neutral like some geometrical shape or bear ubiquitous reference to something. I think the proposed unicorn does not fit in any of those categories. Re: Setting system configuration for components
If a value is only used by one component, put the default in the component spec. If a value is shared across components, you could create an ASO with global scope and inject it into your components -- or you could go old-school, and just create a MyComponentSettings singleton and use it. No, but it is implemented in AbstractComponent: public Messages getMessages() { throw new IllegalStateException(TapestryMessages.providedByEnhancement("getMessages")); } and it is clearly created by the enhancement worker nevertheless, otherwise we'd be getting quite some exceptions. I can't see why that should be different custom components. Or am I missing something? If you don't need decoupling, and don't need to customize across the whole framework, perhaps you don't need to bother with Hivemind. Export to Excel
Hi all, i've an application that have a report that must be oppened with excel, what i've done is that i have a tapestry page as usual (with the .page and the BasePage) and in the PageBeginReder method i put this lines: HttpServletResponse responses = this.getPage().getRequestCycle().getRequestContext().getResponse(); try { responses.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel"); responses.setHeader("Content-disposition", "inline; filename=reporte.xls"); responses.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel"); responses.flushBuffer(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } So in another page i put a link to this one and it should be oppened correctly, the thing is that this implementation is working fine on JBoss 4.0.3 and OC4J 10.0.3 but when i tested it on OC4J 9.0.4 it is showing this error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Response is already committed! at com.evermind[Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE 10g (9.0.4.0.0)].server.http.EvermindHttpServletResponse.setContentType(EvermindHttpServletResponse.java:1049) at org.apache.tapestry.request.ResponseOutputStream.open(ResponseOutputStream.java:182) at org.apache.tapestry.request.ResponseOutputStream.write(ResponseOutputStream.java:270) at sun.nio.cs.StreamEncoder$CharsetSE.writeBytes(StreamEncoder.java:336) ... Re: component that will get localized resources from database?
Hi, actually no, I haven't even tried it, but it *must* collide with the enhancement stuff... However, I came across the page "http://wiki.apache.org/tapestry/UsingCustomResourceSource";, which provides quite a good solution. It "overrides" a default service implementation with a specific one in the applications hivemodule.xml. Kind of obvious, only I just didn't know if and how it works in Hivemind. Thanks to "http://jakarta.apache.org/hivemind/override.html";, that's clearer now. And instead of the InjectMessagesWorker it overrides the ComponentMessagesSource, which is probably also a good idea. So I'm almost there. The only question remaining is: If I understand correctly, this will affect *all* components. Is there a way to achieve this behaviour just for my own, custom components? If getMessages() is already implemented, the enhancement worker shouldn't try to create the method. Re: Validation BEFORE submit
We did something similar by wrapping @Form with a component that can provided multiple levels of validation. For instance, the page can easily provide it's own validation that is not easily doable with normal validators (eg making sure 2 password fields are equal). This has worked well for us as a flexible way of creating custom validation without having to create validators (since most of the custom validation is only used in one page/component anyway). Re: I do not like the new tapestry logo
Actually, Medieval tapestry was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the new logo. I do agree, however, that it's a little odd -- something about the proportioning, the position of the horn, or the pose of the unicorn...? It almost seems to be tipping backwards, out of balance or bent awkwardly. I do, however, prefer something evoking the "heraldic imagery" to the bland old T, which was fine but boring. The concept seems good to me. Then again, is that why Tapestry is named Tapestry? I think the idea is that it weaves together all these components to make a page. component that will get localized resources from database?
Hi there, assume you want to create a localized tapestry application, but there are localized messages that you don't want to store in a properties file / text file. In a plain Java application, you could just write your own implementation of ResourceBundle, that could take the messages from anywhere, e.g., a database, and use that instead of PropertyResourceBundle. With Tapestry, it seems to be more complicated, though. If I understand correctly, the "AbstractComponent" is "enhanced" by an "InjectMessagesWorker", as defined in "tapestry.enhance.xml". The "InjectMessagesWorker" will inject a getMessages() method that will return the result of ComponentMessagesSource.getMessages(IComponent). Now, that's not what I want... Sort Order
Is there a component to allow sorting of items. Like what Palette can do, but I just want to have a list that can be sorted and the order will be saved to the object in the database. So far all I've been doing is allowing the user to set an integer that orders them ascending. -- Justin Stanczak Stanczak Group 812-735-3600 "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Well, it wasn't obvious to me. Then again, is that why Tapestry is named Tapestry? I've never heard the etymology of the name. If that's why it's named Tapestry, then the logo is cool with me. Re: Report in Tapestry using Jasperreport
Hi, I implemented that as a service in Tapestry 4. The only thing you must change is the framework specific HibernateSession injection. It is only used to get an active JDBC connection in method prepareReport.
