require that designers be available to work on final tweaks and color
schemes for a few hours with, say, one or two committers. That way, we
could vote on the basic design without crippling the normal design
process.

Here are some more comps for everyone's perusal. These are JPEGs so
obviously the original vector art is cleaner:

oh, now - raked isn't at all what I was going for... although it does
have a certain ring to it. :-)

I've got a push going on this week but will be opening it up this
weekend. To be clear - I _will_ be putting up the current as well as the
'unicorn' logo submissions. Some feel we should keep the current -
that's fine. Some like the unicorn logo - that's fine, too. But yes -
there will be defined "requirements" list for the logo.

Re: new logo for Tapestry

2006-05-24 Thread Steve Motola
Despite expressing doubts and getting raked over the coals by Brian's sarcasm,
I'm still +1 for contest. So who is taking that on?

As an aside, here are some comps (remember, just ideas, not refined) put
together by a designer. I like the following the best:

  http://www.thelabllc.com/lab/tapestrylogos/tapestry%20ok%2002.pdf

As mentioned, it comes down to what are the criteria and what is the 'brand
identity'? (I wasn't willing to have a high end person walk me through the
whole branding excercise, but that is something we could benefit from.) Some
key concepts I wanted to convey:

power
simplicity
elegance
easy
bringing together
weaving, thread or other tie in with an actual tapestry

Another one to add to the contest. Any feedback is appreciated.

Some others he produced, you can see the different directions he went in, most
of which were just off mark:

Not me... I've only managed that one thought - been a really slow week
in the 'thought department'. :-)

Hmm... well... true:
  1. Define requirements for a logo
  2. Sit back and wait while logos are submitted
  3. Vote [see 'informal' comment below]

*whew* This takes a load off - Barry! You're not worth your weight!
(Barry's a good designer, but a bit hefty) *making note that Barry gets
paid too much*
I've truly not noticed this at all. When given requirements, designers
can be just like us normal people and do things just
cuz they enjoy them. Then again - no one said a company couldn't submit
logos for inclusion either.

Not at all - not a case of "too many cooks in the kitchen" - a case of
"many cooks in their own kitchen, we just vote to see what we're eating"

"contest site" not required [see next comment - yep... it's coming...]

Informal comment: http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/LogoContest - simple.
Been done and worked out pretty well. Make the rules, let logos be
submitted, wait appropriate amount of time (as designated in 'rules') -
and vote (although people are free to vote and change their vote at any
time up until voting is 'done'). The process works if it's used. Not
saying it's the only process - just that there's one that's been used
and it worked.

Feather. No feather. Can look good with. Can look good without. To each
his logo. I wouldn't discount one with - or without.

Re: new logo for Tapestry

2006-05-19 Thread Steve Motola
javaone tapering off, waited to reply to this thread. was great to meet up with
howard and chris nelson and meet tapestry devs scattered amongst the masses.

.02 on the logos:

i had also proposed a logo contest when howard first introduced the new logo
designs and made my comments then. i thought it would be great to have more
community participation in the same vein as open source. since then i have
some second thoughts about this in part because:

1. a contest can be more work than just creating a logo.

2. as i speak with more professional designers they are put off by the idea of
a contest in that it is doing work 'on spec' and no one worth their weight
really does that in the design world. they are not as invested in the open
sourceyness of it all.

3. could be a good if we use it for some outside marketing, but otherwise can
result in 'too many cooks in the kitchen'.

that said, i willing to put up and help manage a contest site if desired.

otherwise i am also having some folk put together some comps and will present
them to the list. perhaps this is our informal way of having a 'contest', if
more and more people can contribute comps via the list.

in regards to the feather and apache - agree that feather is not necessary and
clutter, we can have versions that can include it, but otherwise tap logo
really needs it's own distinction.

Re: new logo for Tapestry

2006-05-19 Thread Paul Cantrell
Hate to break it to you, but management has *no* idea what the Apache
feather looks like or means. Sorry!

I do think the "tryout factor" for developers is a good point.

However, I think the more common approach of placing the Apache logo
alongside ours serves all the purposes you mention, without burdening
the logo.

And it *does* burden the logo. The Apache project logos attempting to
integrate a feather generally don't look as good, IMO. Geronimo? Eh.
Boring. Didn't even see the feathers until I was looking for them.
Spamassasin? Tomcat? Ant? Slick! Looking sharp!

Cheers,

Paul

How about a feather pattern across the top of the 'T'? Again, just a

How about constructing a T with the top, horizontal line being the
Apache feather?

The vertical line of the T could be composed of something geeky - like
1s and 0s, or something.

RE: new logo for Tapestry

2006-05-18 Thread James Carman
Again, that is my opinion (that's what IMHO means). It is not an ASF policy
that says your logo has to contain "the feather." To be clear, there are
other projects that do incorporate the feather into their logos. I didn't
say that it was a requirement. I said that I thought they *should* include
it.

I have nothing against Apache but Tapestry fared well before getting under
Apache's umbrella.

And if we look at the other top level project logos, then majority of them have
their own logo's just fine and simply put ASF logo next to their own. That
makes sense IMO.

Because it is an Apache product. Again, this is my opinion and not a policy
of the ASF at all. I just think that a top-level ASF project should include
it. Apache is a brand and the ASF projects should stay true to the brand.

Could you explain please why it is the "must"?

I like the 2nd one as well. It keeps the old feel somewhat, but spices it
up a bit. Including the "apache feather" is a must IMHO. Great job!

RE: new logo for Tapestry

Well, tapestry *is* an Apache top-level project now (and an Apache
"product"). I think it's very important that we include the "apache
feather."

I think the first image is just fine.

IMO logo should be free of any references to Apache or any other projects or
organizations for that matter. If there will be Apache feather then why now
add that cup of cofee, or make it cup of ink and put the feather in it ;).

Re: new logo for tapestry

I especially like the clover-leaf design one, maybe some different
colors though, and a different font for the "Tapestry", something not
quite as blockish.

Although there seemed to be consensus on this, I was giving a little
more time on the dev list before formalizing this as there needs to be
not only logo submissions, but also criteria logos must adhere to in
order for consideration. If everyone can turn their interest to ideas
for a bit (hit up that old graphics design buddy that owes you a favor),
I'll see if we can't progress with this in a manner that will be the
biggest benefit in the most orderly fashion.

We should create a wiki page for the logo contest, if there is to be one.
Then, we can attach these files to the page, right?

An important thing to bear in mind is the amount of time, development and
strategy that goes into the creation of a successful logo for most

In my opinion, it would be fundamental that the competition winner is
prepared to evolve their idea in accordance with the Tapestry team's

I also think this is the cleanest and to-the-point idea yet. Hmm. Maybe you
could have the Tapestry feather stand beside the T instead of obscuring it,
and also keep the apache coloring. Hmm, silly idea; Color part of the T
with "apache colors" but lose the feather?

Cheers,

Have a look at the Spindle logo at http://spindle.sf.net

Behind the swoopy S is a version of the old T logo I like a lot -
looks like an architectural drawing.

Alas, I lost the original vector artwork for that logo long ago.

In the 3-d "T", I presume the word "compotent" should be "component"? Just a
small typo.

On the whole, 3-d designs should be avoided for logos, however, as the effects
required to achieve them do not scale well and they are an inefficient use of
the available space. They lack clarity. (There are exceptions to this, of
course.)

The unicorn design had excellent clarity and use of space, but the general
impression seemed to be that the iconology was not relevant to Tapestry.

The two by Kent's friend posses the direct relevance that the exclusive use of
typography brings, but lack visual impact.

I'm wary of the fact that this logo discussion mark my first posts to this
list, so I don't want to come across as being negative in any way: I offer all
of this merely as constructive criticism on the proposed designs.

I think Tapestry is a fantastic framework, and I'm geniunely concerned that it
should have an equally fantastic logo!

If it's okay with everyone here, a friend of mine who is a professional
designer is very interested in producing some samples for your consideration. I
should be able to post preliminary images tomorrow.

This is what she has to say for herself:

Now for some selling points to use me:

* I've worked in corporate marketing and specialised in Branding and Brand
Management way back in a past Australian lifetime.

* With all logos I produce, I always provide versions to the client in mono
(all black), reversed (white on black background) and regular rasterized and
vector. All logo versions are also supplied in all possible industry standard
formats (.psd / .ai / .eps / .tif / .jpg / .gif / .png), in Hi / Low res and
CMYK / RGB.

* I also always produce branding guidelines that explains which logo to use and
where. It sounds paranoid to some, but following simple procedures such as
'don't stretch the logo' and 'always use a mono logo on a coloured background'
really goes a long way in protecting the quality and reputation of the brand.
In fact, this kind of document would probably be most useful for an open-source
managed product such as Tapestry

It's still in SVN if you click on "T_Logo.jpg" here and then "view":
http://eris.apache.org/viewvc/tapestry/tapestry-logo/web/

Perhaps the logo topic should be raised in the dev list.

Cheers,

I mean no disrespect to your artists friend, but I think that needs a
considerable amount of work before it comes close ... but I'm sure they know
that already, right?

More problematic, though:

1. I think the combination of the cursive "ta" and sans-serif "pestry" is
awkward. Where font combinations are used within a word like this, each type
face should usage should constitute a potentially separate word in its own
right. I'm not convinced that either font would be a good choice, even if used
exclusively.

2. The check pattern is crude; lacking subtlety and refinement

3. The green is rather "dull"; lacking vibrancy. Additionally, the combination
of this with the grey-green in the check pattern lacks contrast.

Again, I'd like to emphasise that I mean this as constructive criticism -
rather than an uninformed "Oh, it's rubbish: throw it away!" :D
