Basically yes, but
this is something that is tweaked to my needs:

undocumented
even if mysql, not really multi user safe
sometimes poor error handling, what the heck, I'm checking with the log
files, but nothing for the average user
etc.
And I have not really time for support...

I run it on linux, it needs a glassfish or tomcat server.

I would suggest to use flysource. It has even more options than my
program. But runs only on windows, and that;s the reason why I started
my program.

If someone is willing to go a hard road, I'm willing to share. One
modification of the sw is needed though, my database credentials hare
hard coded

What were they blowing dry? The head cement? Problem with that is that
wind, especially with humid air, will cloud up head cement or put a frosty
outer layer on it.

I know tiers that have tried to hook up blowers to their drying wheels, and
after just opted for small fans at low speeds- just enough to move the air,
not actually blow on the flies.

Vinyl cement fries pretty fast, but clouds up if you try to speed it up.
The 'new' UV cure coatings are susceptible to clouding but cure rather
quickly in the sun or UV light.

Was there another reason they were applying a blower?

[VFB] Fishing Jacket Selection

2010-11-11 Thread Rene Zillmann
Hi Gang,

I'm in the market to buy an additional jacket for winter fishing. I have
already a Wading Jacket from Orvis which I like most, now I'm looking
for something which keeps me dry and warm even in Winter, and not only
for fishing.

When I browse through the shops, I see that outdoor jackets like from
Jacke Wolfskin or Patagonia go with 150 to 250 EUR, even ones which look
'top end'. (Lined, flexible, etc.), When I look for jackets which are
marked as fly fishing jackets, they go from 300 to 500 EUR. That;s valid
also for companies which sell 'regular' and 'ff-jackets'.My question is
now: Why are these ff jackets so much expensive? Is it possible to cast
a line while wearing a 'regular' shell? Any experience and thoughts?

Rene,

I really like Simms stuff but it is pricey. I bought a Hodgman wading
jacket at Sportsmans Warehouse a few years back and I love it. It has big
pockets so I can put in a few fly boxes. It is short so it stays out of the
water. And I think it is good looking so I wear it a lot around town (when
I am in Utah. Don't need one here in Hawaii). It was very reasonably
priced and it has worn very well. I did recoat it with a water repellant
last year after about 5 years. I would recommend at least a look. (I
looked and they are about $80 US now which is about what the sticker was
then but I got it on sale for about $50 if I remember right)

Re: NorVise I have one. I bought it secondhand and I like it for certain
types of flies. You can sure apply dubbing very quickly and effectively with
it using the full rotary function. I use different vises for different
purposes. I use a 1984 Regal Inex for tying tubes and larger steelhead
flies. Each vise has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Emerger? It's nothing more than a lure and an ugly one at that!

Agreed - but Neville, he says the fish love it. I may have to try
one of those out. Who knows? Maybe I'll become a lure fisherman. :-P

I still find it interesting that people pay all those big bucks for
true rotary vises (Nor-vise in this case) and barely use the rotary
function. The majority use it just to turn the fly over to look at
the far side AFTER they've finished the fly.

Re: [VFB] emerger

2010-11-11 Thread Don Ordes
Neville,
I agree. I watched the YT- all 4min21sec. of it, and he already had the anchor
and foam down. Now I see what he's using the blow-drier for- to melt the
fly-away junk.

This fly, startting where he did, would take 45 seconds to tie (at most) using
the rope-dub, and give a perfect shape not needing melting. Kinda' like the
one material swap. Tail, segmented abdomen, wing- all in one pass.

Sometimes I think about posting a reply, but then again...naah.
Not bragging, just comparing. (Yes you are! Buggs)

Yeah...Why DIDN'T he use the rotation ability of his vise?

[VFB] Re: now tube flies- reply

2010-11-11 Thread dsdur...@msn.com
Hey, Ashley! Forgive me I don't know how to use this list very
well. I do like to use tube flies on the Blues. They do have a
junction tube connecting the hook to the tube with the crease fly
pattern I tie but the Blue fish didn't seem to have any problems
dislodging the fly if you get my meaning. LOL I have used them for
bass and pan fish also. The junction tubing isn't always necessary
(dependent on the pattern) but I liked Don O's idea of putting a bit
of foam into the end of the tube to replace the bobber stopper idea
they used to use. I may have to test that one out. I tie a lot on
Yuri's tubes and on plastic tubes systems (Yuri also marketed these
shortly before his death) there are a lot of companies out there that
sell very cheap tubing to use for this purpose. There was also
another company marketing a tube system that was somewhat
interchangeable call Eumer tubes but they were ridiculously
expensive. I have a few of them to show when I demo tube flies but I
don't use them. The paint chips off way too easily and they weren't
really good quality like Juri's.
There is a Japanese book out on tube flies by Ken Sawada along with
the two books I'm sure have already been mentioned by Mark Mandell and
Les Johnson and I might mention that Paul Marriner has some nice
examples of both tube flies and waddington shanks in his book. I
could go on listing sources but those are my favorites along with the
websites that have already been mentioned. I've been so tied up with
school and I don't have a lot of time to even keep up with facebook
but you can always tease me out from under my rock with tube flies.
Miss you guys,
Deb

They are boxes with 20 openings for holding large caliber shells, with a
lid that slides over the whole thing.  Works well for those few tube
 flies I've tied.

Great article. I've never tied a tube fly, but shall make some  once

once you've tied them? Do you attach line with a loop, then run it
through the tube and thus have it ready when you need it on the
stream? Inquiring minds want to know. I can speak to the crow bar
effect..lost several great kings in AK with just that happening.
They'd jump, swing their heads and then the hook would come flying out
of their mouths. Got smart and used some rather shorter shanked Fat
Alberts and egg sucking leeches to overcome the effect.  Wish I lived

For any type of fishing, a drawback of long-shanked hooks is the
'crow-bar' effect.  The pull against the eye of the hook is
transferred to the bend with the shank acting as a lever against
the fish's jaw.  This can do a lot of damage to the fish if hooked
solidly (wallow out a hole), or bend the shank, or leverage the
bend and barb right out of the hook-set hole- again damaging the
fish in the process. The bigger and stronger the fish is, the
      worse the problem is.
A short shank hook keeps a hook-set better, especially with fish
that roll.  I've never witnessed a tuna rolling, though, LOL.
(Shhh I have a new shrimp pattern in a tube design because
I wanted to get away from long-shanked hooks just to get a tying
      platform.)
Hooks can be selected for the quarry and fishing circumstance
rather than pre-tied into the fly.
You can change during fishing as you see the need.  You may want
to try a double hook, or a circle hook, or a smaller hook, etc.,
or change from freshwater bronze to saltwater alloy.  Or, you can
fish bronze hooks in saltwater, which would allow the hook to
dissolve quickly if a fish breaks off, and you don't have to worry
about a bronze hook corroding underneath the materials in a
      saltwater-fished fly.
The tube-fly can also side up the tippet to get it away from the
teeth once the hook-set is made.  If the fly is tied on the +-side
of neutral bouyancy, a broken off fly will float to the surface.
But if you want this fly to sink while fishing, a heavy hook and
some brass beads between the hook and tube will get it down to the
fish, as in fising for Spanish Mackeral running 15' down.  A tiny
bit of foam glued into the end of the tube will keep a big hook
from prematurely backing away from the tube during a strip-stop
retreive or a long sink to the zone.
Tube flies can also be tied articulated, actually stacked.  For
example, you could have a 2-part squid (tentacles
