Re: [VFB] RE:Fly rod spinnerbait
Nice, Wayne. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking outside the box. I brought a couple of Beetle Spins and used the frame. Wrapped and then epoxied the hook in place, then tied a Calcasieu Pig Boat on the long arm, downsized the blade. Had a chance to fish them in late September but it was a Casting for Recovery retreat, so it will have to wait till spring to see if they work. I don't think line twist will be an issue like fishing a subsurface fly with a prop in the front. I haven't gotten my Janscraft catalog yet but I was planning to order some frames when I get it. Re: [VFB] Dying feathers with Rit dye ???
Chuck: The dyes in that kit are not the same as Kool Aid unless you're thinking Jonestown or the dyes you see in the stores around Easter time. In the instructions that came with the kit in large letters is Do not eat any egg treated with these dyes I've thought about picking up a couple of packs of the people friendly Easter egg dyes in the $Store after Easter. I bet my daughter has some of those dye tablet left over. And if she don't have black I guess I could try it the way my printer makes black using the red, blue and yellow mixed to make black. But I'll bet that type dye would be about the same thing as the dyes in Kool Aid (food grade dyes) with the vinegar added to set the colors. Anyway, I guess I could try just a few feathers and see what happens. Maybe I should just break down and tell my wife I want a black hackle neck for an early Christmas gift. I HAVE been a good little boy this year after all LOL.. When I'm asleep at least hahaha. At least all the great tips are giving me a lot of options to try to see what works best for me. Re: [VFB] Dropper size
I guess it depends on where you're fishing. Around here, SE PA, there usually a mix of caddis and midges, between, the sparse mayfly hatches on the streams I fish. I normally fish a larger caddis, CDC and Elk, size 14-18 as the lead with a size 20-22, midge dry/emerger as the dropper. If nothing else the larger dry acts as a strike indicator for the smaller dropper. Jerry C - Original Message - I was out today on the Provo River. I had a great day but it could have been better. The BWO were out and before them there was a good midge hatch. I caught 10-15 but lost a few and had lots of lookers. Here is my question for the group. I tried a dry with an emerger . Someone once told me to go one size bigger on the emerger. I was fishing 22 dries so I tied and used a 20 emerger. Re: [VFB] New swap
Alan: Count me in. It has a name but I can't remember, but it was shown to me many years ago by Harry Steeves. - Original Message - Sometimes I'm I glutton for punishment. This is one of those times. If anyone's up for a popper swap, I'll host it. I'm posting this to two lists (Panfish VFB), so the first entrants will be selected on the basis of the time stamp of their e-mails, no matter which list they are on. I hate tying multiples of the same fly, so it will be limited to the first sixteen (16) entrants. If you're like me, I have to tie up about 5-6 before I get my pattern perfected so I have lots of extras. Therefore, you only need to tie 15 poppers. You will NOT get your own popper back. Poppers are tedious for me, so let's put a 2+ month time limit on this one. Poppers must be in the U.S. mail by Friday, October 31. Yep. Halloween. But that'll give me time to get them sorted and mailed back out before Thanksgiving. We're going to be out of town sometime in mid to late November so I'd really like to get it over before we leave. Okay. Remember: first sixteen. This is NOT negotiable. FIre up your entries. The ONLY requirement is: 15 poppers. They can be deer hair, foam, balsa, shoe rubber, whatever, just as long as it's a popper. And keep 'em turned the right way - no sliders allowed. ;-) Rules are simple: Fifteen (15) poppers (any type, any size, any color, any material) Postmarked to me by October 31. Include appropriate return money for postage (and packaging if you dont have returnable packages). Usually 3-4 bucks inside the U.S. will cover it, since the bubble-pak envelopes run around a buck. If you want them back by priority mail, that now runs 6 bucks!! Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?
When we used to out to Reelfoot lake when I was in college they had a couple rows of cane poles on the porch of the bait shop. Being more sophisticated than the locals we use our spinning gear. Still can't explain how those folks with the cane poles always ended up with a bunch of slabs, while we caught the 8 to 12 inch crappie. Bluefish ain't bad, you just have to cook them right. You cook them on a cedar plank over the grill, when they're done you throw away the bluefish and eat the cedar plank. I like the snapper blues 10-18 inches long. Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?
Wes: That's the one. It's a cheap way to try tenkara fishing. You can put a loop on the piece of fly line you want to and do a loop to eye connection. Another way, as I found out by accident, the one I bought had a butt cap on it which came off and I could have popped the tip top off and threaded the fly line through the rod and seated it with some Goop or flexible cement. Cabela's recommendation that the line shouldn't be longer than the rod is right on the money. If you're planning on using a leader, you might want to make a bit shorter. Reminded of the long cane poles we sometime used for crappie fishing when I was in college in NW Tennessee. Went home and rummaged through my Cabela's catalog and came across telescoping graphite crappie poles, ranged from 10 to 14 feet in length. I ordered a 10 footer and when I got it I took it to the shop and we compared it with the Tenkara rod very little difference even manufactured by the same company except the price which was $275 less than the shop owner. Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?
I've messed around with it. I first saw my first tenkara rod about 5 or 6 years ago when a customer walked in to the local fly shop I frequent. He was a frequent traveler and well versed in tenkara fishing. He'd brought a tenkara rod back from Japan which set the owner back $300. He showed us how to rig it and demonstrated a bit of casting. I had a chance to exam in the rod and it looked familiar to me. I used it a couple of times but it's tough to use a 10 foot rod. Still if folks are interested in getting into tenkara fishing, it's an inexpensive way to get started. Jerry C - Original Message - I did some fishing with them in January and caught some large piranhas with them. To me they are nice to use when I go to the local pond. Has anyone else here gotten into Tenkara yet? I'm now using it where I used to go to my two weight. 5th year of drought, the rivers and creeks are low, Tenkara means sight casting to small fish , for the most part. And you can get a deep rod bend out of a 5 inch sunfish. We are also having some luck in using Tenkara to get new fishermen interested in the fly. The rods are a little steep, but there's no reel involved and lines go for $2 - $20. Very light and easy to cast. We (my local fly club) have a beginner's Tenkara outing scheduled for next weekend and we have 30 people signed up. We'll pair them up with experienced fishermen and get them rolling. Re: [VFB] RE:Doing a wee bit of tying
Very nice, Wayne. Several years ago, Harry Steeves came up with an epoxy ant which required the epoxy to be colored red, black or brown to match the ant being imitated. I tried them but had difficulty getting the dyes in small quantities to do the coloring. So I switched over to using beads or making the under-bodies with Kreinik thread and coating them with epoxy to get the right shape. I gave up after a while because i didn't have much luck with the sinking ants. The floating foam ants worked much better. I'm in the frame of mind where I'm tying patterns that I haven't used in awhile. May have to resurrect all three and add yours to the mix and see if they'll work for me know. - Original Message - Tying some beads ants this evening: Wayneb Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Re: [VFB] Foam Popper head punch set needed???
Chuck: As I mentioned earlier, I got my punches from Harry Steeves several years ago. They are really heavy duty, industrial type punches, ranging from 1/8 to 3/4 inch diameter. Not sure if Harry had them made specifically for him to sell. There's no brand anywhere on them. You might want to check some of the on-line catalogs that sell industrial or professional type tools. These were certainly designed to cut something heavier than foam. I use the brass more often than not. I've got 9mm, .357, .38-40, .44-40 and .45 Colt, plus I sacrificed some shot-gun shells to get to the brass. .410, 16 ga, 20 ga and 12 ga. Just like a knife they need to be sharpened. Just do a couple of file strokes around the inside of the casing and you should be cutting right through the foam without a problem. Jerry - Original Message - I am looking for a set like the one shown in the photo on this page below. But. This guy mentioned putting sections of brass tubing that has been sharpened with a grinder and/or dremel tool, and drilling them out. I have a 1/2” chuck sized drill press, and with a wooden backing, I bet the drilling would be MUCH cleaner than the punching with a hammer.. Right Or like I said, if anybody has a better idea, I’m be grateful. Re: [VFB] Foam headed poppers???
Chuck: You might be able to get it in a craft store. That's where I initially go mine, but they quit carrying it. The only reason I have some is that a friend on another list had to quit fly fishing because of health reasons and decided not to tie anymore and sent me all he had. He lives in Florida so the stuff might be available down there. You can probably get it on line also. The stuff I have is called Delta Renaissance Foil. Mother of Pearl. It's not really necessary. I don't remember the original pattern being more that white foam with color add with permanent marker. It does had a splash of sparkle like scales to the fly. If you're tying a bunker or shad imitation, a silver foil added to the fly gives it that flash you see with those fish. I'm always leery of Hard as Nails. I used to use it for head cement and coating my poppers but then noticed a distinct nail polish smell when I opened my fly boxes. Figure if I could smell it so could the fish. You can find water based epoxies One I use is called Triple Thick it can be thinned with water. It dries quickly and one or two coats should work for you since you aren't dealing with toothy critters. Another is called Liquid Fusion It's a clear urethane that can be thinned with water. One more is Seal-Coat Lure and Jig finish, another that can be thinned with water. There are several glues available in craft stores that can be used to glue foam. If it dries clear and tacky you can apply a thin coat to foam and when it's tacky apply the foil. I tend to use just one foam circle for my popper head, especially the ones I tie for pan fish. I got hit on the forward cast. I'd been fishing for a couple of hours and my shoulder was getting tired and it was windy and I ignored the couple of casts that had already hit my hat. I took a pictures of the ones I've been using, including the one that hooked me in my ear. As soon as I get them uploaded to my computer. I'll post them in an e-mail. - Original Message - Jerry: I'll try some of the smaller ones as well, because even a bluegill's main diet is usually made up of minnows, or baby bluegills and other baby fish. Also, where do you get that film stuff as shown in the video that the guy laid on top of the sticky side of the peel and stick foam?? Or, is that really needed?? Seems to me I could make these using plain foam, then glue it together on the bottom, then paint the outside with a sharpie, then paint it with Hard as Nails or 5 min. epoxy, and save the peel and stick foam for the stacked circle popper heads right?? And did you get that in your ear on a forward cast?? I've had a bunch in my ears from that LOL. First year I started fishing, I think I had more holes in my ears than I could count. THAT’S the main reason I try to remember to debarb all my hooks. Chuck: I've tied my Crease Flies down to about 1 1/2 inches. At that size I'll use 1 mm foam if I can find it. Brad's a member of my salt water club. An excellent tyer. He does some mean poppers. Back to the Crease flies. I use a spark plug gauge/gaper to make my triangles. One thing I do a bit different is when I glue the bottoms together, I'll put a small clamp to squeeze them. It flattens the foam and creates a bit of a keel. Crease flies were original designed to imitate an injured peanut bunker and it floated on its side. It's evolved now to where it floats belly down. Also, they can be fished off of intermediate or sinking lines. You can plug the mouth with foam, like when he's adding a rattle in the video or leave it open. In the last year I've started using articulated shanks instead of a long shank hook. Tie it the same way, just slip a split ring with the appropriate sized barbless treble hook onto the loop in the back of the shank before you add the body. Not sure if you can see it well in the attached picture, but that's one of them hanging from my ear. - Original Message - Jack: Those are neat. White, Yellow, Green, Pink and Black and use hackle and marabou to give me different color combinations. When I stick them together, Yellow and Black, Green and Yellow, Green and White. I've tried it with the metal flake or sparkle foams, but I lose a lot of the sparkle from them. What I like to do with the peel and stick is use transfer foil on either the top or bottom layer. I use Mother of Pearl foil a lot, along with red, green, blue, gold, silver and motor oil(Black MOP. The result is what they sell in fly shops as Loco Foam. But then I got a 10 sheet pack, that is half the size of the others, but they are all beautiful “metal flake” colors on green, red, pink (which I KNOW will be a killer color as anybody who knows me knows that I have had great luck with that color), blue, black, white, yellow, gray, orange and chartreuse. My question is this?? I know black and yellow make great bumble bee or yellow jacket wasps colors, but can somebody tell me other colors or combos they have had good luck with on bluegills??? I also plain to, instead of wasting the beautiful metal flake ones to stack them all up, say if I want to make some that are green. And say I want them to be 10mm thick. Instead of wasting 5 pieces of the metal flake, which costs more and is half the size, I’ll put metal flake on the rear one and front one, and sandwich in three pieces of plain green. See what I mean??? But I need ideas on some combos that have worked. I plan to make a few of each of the solid colors and just trying those till I see what they are hitting on that particular day in that particular shade, or sunshine, or time of day etc. But I didn’t even know they made the stuff in the metal flake till tonight. I think Gray and black might be good because we have certain beetles that are black, but have gray colored wings when they spread them out. I think black and green would be good, because June bugs here are sorta that color combo. But others I just can’t think of right now. Re: [VFB] How far off is this fly from a Tom Nixon original?
Wes: I picked this up off this web site. http://www.warmwaterflyfisher.com/flymonth/FOTM052002.htm There are tying instructions and some history on the fly. The CALCASIEU PIG BOAT TYING INSTRUCTIONS Hook: Size 2/0 Mustad 3366 (Or Tiemco 8089 #2) Thread: Black Size A (I used 3/0 Monocord) Skirt: Black rubber hackle or rubber thread that has not been separated Hackle: Two or Three wide and long black saddle hackles Body: Large black chenille for one pass or medium chenille with two passes Eyes: Painted Weight: Optional, this depends on how fast and how deep you want the fly to go Note: you can use a variety of color rubber hackle, chenille and saddle hackle - Original Message - Wes, I have a later printing of the first edition of Tom Nixon's book. In it, the Calcasieu Pigboat was made from heavy black chenille, rubber legs, and a spinner on the back of the fly tied on an extended piece of monofilament. If I ever get my driveway plowed and permission from my wife to get out of the house, I'll try to make a copy of the 'recipe' and send it to you. I can also send you a chunk of the chenille he used. It's very hard to find today. Somewhere in my collection, I've got an original Calcasieu Pigboat tied by Tom. If I can find it, I'll include a photo. In the 2nd edition of Tom's book, he dropped the spinner from the recipe. af p.s.: The above is from memory. I was up in Vermont over the Memorial Day weekend in the south central part of the state at least until it started snowing on me on Saturday. I got one day of fishing in but it was lake fishing. Tony, that wasn't the first time I've seen snow in Vermont around Memorial Day. But this time it was colder, didn't get out of the 30's all day. I did my shopping that day. It was a cold rain when I left, after stops in Manchester, the Vermont Country Store and the local maple syrup place, it was snowing when I got back to my sister's place. I hoping for warmer and drier weather by the 4th. I'd like to hit the White River for some smallmouth, the last two years it's been blown out when I went to fish it May. Re: [VFB] Warm-water flies
Not sure about the green weenie imitating a caterpillar . Usually they're tied either with lead wrapped around the shank or a black beadhead and meant to imitate the green rock worm or similar caddis larvae. The green inch worm is usally tied with a piece of foam. The small foam cylinders used for parachute posts work well for tying them. There is a black caterpillar that clutters up the trees with their silk nests. I spent about 15 minutes breaking up one that was hanging over the Upper Delaware near Hancock. I watched them float downstream till they disappeared without anything rising for them. There was a slightly larger and hairy caterpillar that were dropping off a bridge over one of the Catskill streams near Roscoe which the trout were taking with enthusiasm. I had some black foam back at camp. I cut into strips and wrapped it on size 8 3xl hook, and then wrapped brown hackle. If I flipped the fly up into the air and let it plop in to the water, I caught fish. If I cast upstream and let drift over where the trout were feeding there were no takers. It also worked well in lakes in a smaller size for sunfish, rock bass and the stray smallmouth when cast under trees hanging over the water. Jerry Caruso All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia. - Original Message - I don't know so much as about warm water, but along at least the East Coast trout streams that I am aware of we have vast numbers of tiny green caterpillars that are active right now and up through the next few more weeks. They cover the trees as the leaves first unfold in the spring when they are the most tender and nutrient dense. They are often seen dangling like a spider from a tiny thread of silk. If you park under a tree it will become immediately clear just how prolific they are. Trout love them, and the most popular pattern out here is called the green weenie. On streams with tight canopies it is worth trying this pattern first from early spring right up until early summer. Re: [VFB] Cicada pattern
In 2004 the 17 year hatch fizzled here in extreme SE PA. Kept waiting for them to show up but only the annual ones made an appearance. The smallies in the local creek I fish seem to like the big meal the annuals provide . The fun part is watching the sunfish try to take them under. I like the pattern Tony posted looks a lot easier to tie than the ones I tied for the 17 year hatch back in 2004. I think I still have them somewhere. Jerry Caruso All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia. - Original Message - The reason Wayne is probably asking is because the Mid Atlantic Region is in for an EPIC cicada year that is supposed to be even bigger than the brood that hatched back in 2004. When the cicadas hatch, they are the only meal in town for about 6 weeks regardless of whatever else is hatching at the time. For the trout and smallmouth in our neck of the woods it is kind of like why go for the usual salad bar when it is all you can eat T-Bone night? For those that have never seen one of the big cicada hatches, when I say epic, I mean epic on biblical proportions. I know people who have them confused with locusts. Re: [VFB] Mustad size 32

Re: [VFB] Damsels and Dragons Swap 2012
Since my salt water club has been working with CFR the last five years, including acting as, in this case, lake guides for their retreat in South Jersey. I would favor the flies going to Casting for Recovery. Jerry Caruso All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia. - Original Message - Just figured out my Monday post did not go through to the list(s) Anyway I received Chucks flies in the mail this weekend and I am still waiting on a couple sets for both groups to complete the swap. I plan on waiting till this weekend for the missing sets and sending them out on Monday. If you can't wait let me know and I will get yours headed your way immediately. I also need to know which Charity you would like the extra set sent to? Casting for Recovery http://castingforrecovery.org/ or Project Healing Waters http://www.projecthealingwaters.org/ I will probably end up sending flies to both because of the wonderful donation of flies from Chuck Alexander. I am also working on a couple wooden flyboxes in my spare time if they come out well the donated flies will go in them otherwise I will pick up a box at a local retailer. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Re: [VFB] What are you all tying right now?
Nothing right now. I'm getting the house ready for the family Seven Fishes Christmas Eve dinner. Which means it's getting it's quarterly cleaning and I have to figure what fish/seafood besides calamari, shrimp, scallops, clams and mussels I need to cook up. After Christmas, I'll be tying some poppers and sliders for the Somerset show. My salt water club has a table at the show and we use it to raise funds that help support the local(South Jersey) Casting for Recovery activities. I saw a couple of interesting midge patterns that I want to add to my midge box. We have limited mayfly hatches on the local streams so I concentrate mostly on midge and caddis patterns. Other than that I'd like to come up with a minnow pattern combining eel skin and EZ-Body tubing. Then where ever my mind and imagination take me. Re: [VFB] Kentucky lake area
Rick: It's been many, many years sinced I've fished either lake. I did most of my fishing below the dams then and it was usually decent fishing when they weren't generating power. You could pick up crappie, bream, catfish and fresh water drum using bait and lures. Stripers were just a rumor back in the mid-70's. As already said many marinas rent boats. If you're in that area, a smaller lake that holds bass, crappie, bream and gar is Reelfoot lake. Formed by the New Madrid quake in the early 1800's it's a bit more primitive than Kentucky or Barkley. Re: [VFB] Bullets- only for those who like guns hunting- OTHERS DELETE
Larry: A 230 grain .45 ACP bullet comes out the barrel at around 900 FPS, about the same as a 250 grain .45 Colt. It's a good man stopper but it would just piss off a big bear. Don's got the right idea with the .500 S W. Not something you'd want for concealed carry but good in bear country. Jerry Caruso All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia. - Larry Johnson JOHNSOLA @ uvu . edu wrote: Makes all the sense in the world. I wish I was in a financial position to buy a BIG FRAME handgun. What would my Springfield Armory 1911 .45 ACP do in a bear situation? Any good at all? Larry Johnson I've posted photos before of my fly-fishing protection in Grizzly country, such as Glacier Park in NW Montana. I love bears- just don't want to be mauled or eaten alive. Hope I never have to use it. So this starts out as fly-fishing related. Please respond off list ffc @ tribcsp .com The list is a little slow, so I though I'd post why I opted for the SW .500 mag. over the .44 mag. A few weeks ago we were camping and my friend had his 44mag. So we target-practiced against a clay bank at 80 yards or so. After we shot for a little, he went over and dug out a few slugs for comparisons. His 44 shot 230 grain bullets (left) and mine 550 grain bullets. Mine is 10% larger in diameter (.5 vs .44), but doesn't look like it because of the radiused shoulder. Flip-em over: So at almost 2 1/2 times the weight, it mushrooms out to double the diameter. This will stop even the biggest bear in its tracks, even at full charge point-blank range. We're looking at over 2600# M.E. from a hand-gun carried in a vest holster! NOW... I thought I'd show you what a real heavy-brush dangerous game cartridge looks like. This gun is my cousin's, who hunts African Cape Buffalo, the toughest animal on earth to put down. On the left is a .44 and a .500 (700 grain). On the right is his 4-Bore, or, 1000 Nitro Express! That's NOT black powder, like the old Maharajah's version in India. Over 12K in muzzle energy! 2200 grain bullet at 1600 ft./sec.! Heavy gun, has his gun-bearer carry it in a custom sling until the stalk: Once they spot the old beast, it's time to feed the villagers: Some people oppose hunting, but they don't understand Africa. He paid $40,000 for the hunt, which 75% went to the village fund, and the meat direct to the villagers. In areas without tourism, where he hunts, these animals would all be killed by poachers. The villagers all become game wardens, protecting the resource that feeds them, rather than a poacher killing it and making a few hundred dollars for himself. Please, comments off list. They are used when fishing slip bobbers to adjust the depth that the bait sits at. There are several types but one style is a small rubber egg shape one that slides onto the line. If it were set an inch or so above the hook, and the hook broke off, it would in theory keep the tube from sliding off. I'll do a couple of experiments and see what happens. They run about a $1.99 for about 30 of them. A cheap enough solution to the problem. Jerry Caruso All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia. - Wes Wada wada@gmail.com wrote: Hi VFB, I've never seriously fished with tube flies, though have tied a few. Lately I have run into some applications where tube fly tying would be an asset. Descriptions of tube flies always tout that in trying to catch a fish, you can break the hook off the tippet without losing the fly. I can see that, if the fly floats, but if the fly is tied onto a metal tube, I assume the fly just sinks and you lose it anyway? Does anyone have tips on how to retain the tube portion of the fly even though the hook breaks off the tippet? To make this one really different, I'm thinking of an OLD FART SWAP! You'll need to be at least 65 years old before the end of this year, ore thereabout. The fly you'd tie would be one of your own design, preferably one of your favorites, fly size up to you. At this point, I'm just testing the water. As those of you who have participated in my seaps before already know, there'll be around 25 participants. Could be more. Could be less, depending on the number of OLD FARTS who can still do a whip finish. :-) ;-) :-P :-D Time frame for flies to me would be around the first of February, with the usual toe tags, return postage packaging or pre-stamped return package. Yep. Here's proof that people do tie size 32 flies. http://www.danica.com/flytier/sfp_previewx/sfp_preview.htm Tony Spezio and myself participated. [VFB] Re: Hook question
Chris: I have a story for you. In the SFP, I received a size 32 from Hans W, and proceeded to try and tie a fly. The jaws spit it out. I tried to bow out but Hans sent me another. I was trying to get it in my vise when it slipped and disappeared when I knocked a couple of things over when I was looking for it. Thought this is it then Tony Spezio sent me one, and I finally was able to tie a fly for the SFP. A couple of weeks later I was cleaning around my desk when I thought I saw a glint of gold. I got out a magnifying glass and there in the rug was a size 32 hook. Rather than risk trying to grab it. I took the round magnet I keep on my tying desk, and used it to pick the hook up. When I turned it over to get the hook off, I found two hooks instead of one. The magnet had been on my desk the night I'd dropped the second hook and it had been sitting on it for two weeks. I passed one on to one of the tyers in the swap who had bent the one he had gotten. The other one is sitting in a small clear plastic box at my local fly shop. -- Jerry Caruso [EMAIL PROTECTED] All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia -- Original message -- From: Chris Broomell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi John, I don't think that you'll find a Mustad 277 at any store. They're not made any longer. There are a few people (and you know who you are!) who have some. I think that I still have ONE - although it's hard to tell because I don't want to open the bag. I tried tying a fly on one once...I used to have two hooks...then one decided to jump out of my vise. The other is too precious for me to make another attempt... Good luck. Chris John C. [VFB] Re: Chunking Winding vs Fly Fishing - Food for thought
Once a year on a regular basis. I go to a lodge in northern Ontario. It's a pretty good size lake and the main quarry is walleye. Since I go up in mid-July, they're mainly in 20-25 feet of water. Not real conducive to fly fishing. So I drag out my my three spinning rods, one trolling rod plus my two fly rods. Trip is usual about 70-30, chunking winding-fly fishing. I've caught a dozen pike on the fly rod the last 3 years and maybe 3 or 4 on lures. The only other time I'll do it is if I'm flounder fishing with my buddy. Again, I take a fly rod with me and I'll use it if there's any surface action with bluefish or we're drifting in shallow enough water that I can get my fly down and keep it down during the drift. -- Jerry Caruso [EMAIL PROTECTED] All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia -- Original message -- From: Jimmy D.
