Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers
Unlike Gary, I'm far-sighted. But my bifocals gave me the same problems From our conservation he makes a lot of them for office workers that are looking at screens all day. So I had to have some computer glasses made when I was working on the computer all the time. Sure helped prevent the headaches! But I have a pair of the 2.5X drugstore glasses for fly tying. And I have another pair that's 3.0X for rod building. I have to admit I used the latter pair for tying for the "Tiny Fly Swap". a. -- Allan Fish Greenwood, IN afi...@sbcglobal.net -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group. Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers
> > From our conservation he makes a lot of them for office workers that are > looking at screens all day. > > Gary S. > That describes my work environment. Though sitting in front of my screen also means sitting at my fly tying desk. I work with a number of synthetic, non-messy materials that I tie certain flies with. That's fly tying that gets along with all the technical gear. There are three basic single focal length prescriptions that your optometrist can write for you. Distance vision is the most common. Reading glasses are probably second-most popular. Then catching up fast are glasses for use while viewing a computer monitor. Some people are lucky to be able to use the cheap reading glasses. The reading glasses you can buy for a few bucks are closer focus than the computer glasses. A computer glasses prescription is closer focus than the distance glasses. The worse your eyesight, the less apt you are to be able to use your distance glasses as your reading glasses. In regards to the magnifier thread, I am interested in getting the version of Mag Eyes called HatEyes. It's a version that clips onto the bill or brim of a hat. Best price I have seen is $24.95. High quality optics...I tried on a pair at the local sports megastore. For fly tyers, it would work well, since people are used to seeing fly tyers wearing ball caps at the tying demos. I'd also like to use them for general fishing, but am fearful of losing them. At $25 a pop, that's a consideration. Mike" I got mine from Harbor Freight for about $7.95 at the time, and it works fine. It has the normal square lenses on the flip down, then it has a small round 3X (I think)piece will spin down and give you a 12X close inspection double lens in that one eye. I've had mine for years and it has never given me any problems. Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers
The head magnifier's advantage... you'll always know where you have them, they are never in the way... they are "just there". But now I realized a fatal backside. They are so comfortable and after a while you won't even notice that you're using them. I just finished with trimming the gills on a #32 damsel nymph that I've been working on for an hour. When I was going to put it down with the others, I quickly realized what I had done. This time I had been using the mags also for the final trim... and the outcome was a damsel with far shorter gills than the others. An hour wasted and neckpains for nothing... :o( /Nick -Ursprungligt meddelande- Från: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-m...@googlegroups.com] För Anthony Spezio Skickat: den 3 februari 2010 21:50 Till: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Ämne: Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers The lenses come in 1 1/2 to 7 magnification. I have several types and the Opti Visor is the best for me. I just can't tie with a Magnifier Light, I wear bifocal glasses and a 5X lens in the visor. I can look through my bifocals at things on the bench and they are clear and then look at the fly in the vise and it is clear without adjusting the visor. The only thing I find when tying at shows is looking up at the person I am talking to.. I do automatically raise the visor to look at that person. I go almost all day with the visor on my head. This would bother some people and not others, maybe I just have a hard head. The Mag Eyes would be second choice they are light in weight but I still prefer the Opti Visor. I have two pair the 5X for tying and 7X for rod wrapping. The cheap ones with lights from Harbor Freight are just OK but not as good as the better ones. They are usually on sale for less than 5.00 You will have to decide, this is what works best for me. Tony, I have bifocals as well. Do your Opti-Visors have the small magnifier len(s) that adds to the strength of the primary one or is it one lens? I have one of the Harbor Freight visors. It is okay and gets the job done. The lights are not even worth putting the batteries in them, but plenty of visors don't even come with lights, so I don't worry about it. Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers
Got one..hate it. I find that a pair of reading glasses in the 2.5-3.0 work so much better. Greater depth of field and not so heavy on the head. My neck ached when I tried to use the head magnifier for over an hour. I tie all my flies with a light magnifier, It shows up every flaw and is much more relaxing on my neck and eyes. But, as previously said, when I'm away from my tying bench to which the light is attached, and tying in shows, then the reading glasses work great. Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers
I bought a little while ago. I guess the model I bought can be considered a cheapo, but it was "just to try if it was something". They offer more than the magnifier light I have. I like the magnifier, but I don't like the "obstacle feeling" when it's between me and the fly. You don't get that with the head magnifiers. When you then don't need them, just lift them and continue... don't have to move any lights or anything. They suited me and I might buy more expensive ones when I feel a need to do so. Right now I can't see why though, since I like these... but these are the only ones I've tried too, so I haven't much to compare with. /Nick -Ursprungligt meddelande- Från: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-m...@googlegroups.com] För Michael Bliss Skickat: den 3 februari 2010 06:03 Till: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Ämne: [VFB] Head Magnifiers I am thinking of buying a head magnifier. Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers
They have a very shallow depth of field. Small movements of your head will put them out of focus. tried them, never could get use to the fade in and out of focus. Had a pair of glasses made that focus on my PC screen and work well when I tye.
