[videoblogging] Bandwidth

2006-02-12 Thread davecircumnavigator
My videos are ~10 meg. I'm using 1and1 and looking at significant
amounts of money in bandwidth charges if my user base expands (which
I'm hoping it does). Does anyone have advice on a way around the
bandwidth issues of serving up video? Glenn, my web guy, contacted a
service that was offering unlimited bandwidth but they said that was an
old promotion, from before video blogs and they won't honor it
anymore.

This is one developing implementation. There will be many different
methods and attempts. It isn't always the first that is best or most
successful as google and flickr has shown. Though being early in a
market has it's advantages as amazon has demonstrated.

[videoblogging] problem with weird video format

2006-02-12 Thread Deirdre Straughan

Earlier this week I hooked up a USB digital terrestrial TV antenna to my laptop, and recorded a few minutes of video here and there to see how it came out. The result was some very good MPG (1,2,4? I don't know) which plays just fine in Windows Media Player and can be opened in my video editing software (Roxio VideoWave 7).
So I eagerly recorded the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, and had some ideas for what I wanted to do with that footage in a videoblog. The result was a bunch of files that I can't open with anything - they cause Windows Media Player and everything else to hang, VLC plays them with no sound and jumping through very fast. Other programs refuse to even try. The only thing that lets me do anything with them is the DivX converter, which happily converts them to DivX. But I don't have any editing software that will edit DivX.
Any ideas, anybody? I'm really frustrated that I can't use this footage.-- best regards,Deirdré Straughanwww.beginningwithi.com (personal)

I am in upstate NY. I haven't been able to reach them at all for about
2 hours and all my links to them hang. This is true for other blogs I
have tried. I am surprised that there has not been any other
discussion on this list about that. Too early in the morning?

I really hope that this is just a "blip" and not a more prolonged
problem They have been providing a major service as a gateway to video
blogging. I don't know what their business model is, but I hope they
can keep going. They certainly got me started!

I'm not sure what the problem has been with them lately however as of
today, I am going to start to upload a copy of my videos to my own
host. Just to be sure, I'll stick a copy on my home server as well.

My home server may not have the best upload speed in the world but at
least there will still be a way for my visitors to view my videos.

[videoblogging] Good video instructors in NYC/NJ?

2006-02-12 Thread jonny goldstein
I know a couple of people who are looking for video shooting and
editing instruction, one on one, or in a small class.

Anyone know of someone good in the NYC area I can refer them to? One
of these people already has a little experience. The other is a total
newbie.

[videoblogging] Re: Bandwidth

2006-02-12 Thread David Howell

It looks like Ourmedia has it's share of problems as well. Just tried
to upload a 6 meg video both with their site and with their upload
tool and it failed. The upload tool just plain crapped out and
crashed. Numerous times. According to their forums, looks like others
are having multiple problems there as well.

Very few things come for free. Think I am going to use my own host
then start paying for the extra bandwidth if/when that time comes.

I use dreamhost.com's generous bandwidth plans for smaller versions of

Re: [videoblogging] Better camera? Sony HC1 or Panasonic PV-GS400

2006-02-12 Thread Halcyon Lujah
I have been unable to take advantage of the HD from my HC1. (Premiere
doesn;t handle it, that I know of)
And I have trouble importing video even WITH the down conversion to
regular DV. It will work in chunks shorter than 9 minutes. But I can
no longer capture tapes in Premiere.

And the new iMovieHD has been a nightmare, too, for me.

I offer various formats of my videos. For use with iTunes, I host my
videos on blip.tv. For the other formats, I use archive.org (big
brother to ourmedia). Blip uploads with a html page and for archive,
I prefer ftp over their upload tool. My last episode upload to
archive was over 1gig.

Hope this helps.

Re: [videoblogging] Better camera? Sony HC1 or Panasonic PV-GS400

2006-02-12 Thread nathan.freitas

I have the HC1 and while I love it you really need some horsepower and lots of storage to take advantage of it. Its a bit overkill for "videoblogging" - due to its cost (you will always be worried about it), size (it doesn't fit in your pocket), and its resolution.
The HDV output does look beautiful in its native 1080i resolution, and even when downconverted to DVD. It does have a built in HDV-to-DV conversion mode, that works well. You end up with letter boxed video output that is easily captured by Premiere, iMovie, etc. After battling with iMovie HD for many months, I finally converted to Final Cut Express, which has worked better. HDV capture on my top of the line powerbook still only happens at 1/4 speed, though I am not sure if thats due to the processor, hard drive, or Firewire 800.
Anyhow, unless you have a real need for HDV1080i (i do for historical archive reasons), then this isn't the camera for your day-to-day videoblogging.+NathanOn 2/12/06,

[videoblogging] Re: My Wordpress 2.01 blog on Dreamhost has been Hacked!

2006-02-12 Thread Patrick
So far, the only communication I've received from Dreamhost was an
automated e-mail apologizing for not getting back to me within 24
hours, but that I would hear from them at some point.

However, I did receive a report from an IT friend who had scanned the
server and thought it might be of interest to others.

NOTE: I am not trying to cause any problems for Dreamhost; in my view,
they provide an excellent price/value proposition, but am concerned
about the following:

---
Patrick,

I'm thinking that the first thing you will want to do is backup all
the data you can. I think that your web server has been totally
compromised. Of specific note, there is an IRC proxy service running
on port 31337 (which is 'leet-speak for elite) and a telnet service
running (Probably a back door installed for continued access). Telnet
= bad, but is especially suspicious when running alongside ssh. (Which
is a secure version of telnet)

I have enclosed a security scan of your website that was taken last
night, printed to a pdf.

Another note. This morning I found that your DNS was broken. Even if
your web site and server were working perfectly, this would still be
completely debilitating.

What is curious to me is that from what I can tell, your DNS and web
site are served through a company called DreamHost. If this is true, I
would strongly suggest moving your site to a different hosting
company. I have personally used lunarpages.com in the past and believe
that they are a very good and inexpensive solution. Lunarpages seems
to meter usage in a much more fair way than others that I have seen,
and are very helpful. No hosting provider should allow themselves to
be compromised so badly and for so long.

To the good news. . . .

I have been on Dreamhost for only a few days and I have found the
experience unpleasant because of a loutish indifference to support.
I've gotten the same e-mail. Their skrimpy little wiki is of little
help -- look something up and you even get a press release from 2001!

Your friend's suggestion about lunarpages got me curious enough to
browse their site. I found it very much oriented to a good user
experience. They even encourage telephone support. I browsed around a
bit and it looks as if I will go for it unless I find bad reports. It's
better for me to bail from Dreamhost now before I have too much linked

[videoblogging] Vlogger Con Jan 2005 - Today's Blizzard Reminds Me...

2006-02-12 Thread Ed Yarrish

Today's blizzard in New York City reminds me of January 22, 2005 when a few hardy souls braved the blizzard of that day to be at the first face-to-face meeting of this video blogging group.  When I think about it, there were some phenomenally creative, entrepreneurial and technically astute people filling the room that day.  Raymond and Deirdre (and her daughter) got the long-distance travel awards coming from Norway and Italy, respectively.
Of course, the PR stars of the decade - Andrew and Amanda - were there.  I'll always remember Andrew's presentation where he made the commitment to have something produced every day, five days a week.  I'll also remember the concerns he expressed about making a business out of his efforts.
There was philosopher king, Jay, whose sense of wonder about the power of this new medium seemed to energize the whole network that was being formed.  ryanne added her special artistic viewpoint.  Peter, quietly and unabtrusively, added his superior technical skills.  Steve Garfield added his tremendous energy, and proved that no man should be limited to a single blog.
There was Michael, and his daughter, at that time "the world's youngest blogger" and star of ABC news.  Does that record still stand, Michael? Also there was Mica, Josh, Jakob -- the party host -- Eli, Sean, Kenyatta and the indomitable Marc Canter.  I also recall Scott from Feedster, Leslie from Chicago, and David Hall from Yahoo, and Chuck with his phenomenal sense of humor, and Chris W. whose "human dog" also knew how to laugh at himself.
I'm doing most of this from memory, and a few notes in my journal.  Who else did I miss?My thanks to all of you who were there for creating a tremendous event, and a wonderful memory.  Even the weather made it extra special.  I learned an awful lot from the people who were there, and all the others on this e-mail list, over the last year plus.  Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience so generously.
I've put what you have taught me to work in a few small efforts of my own.  One is a community exploration of art and nanotechnology, and the other is a
new business relationship with TEC, the world's largest CEO organization with over 12,000 members in 15 countries.  We need to get more CEOs in organizations like this so they can learn about "the triple bottom line -- people, profit, and planet".

I've been using Ourmedia for big audio files (17mb -45mb). Just
recently (last weekend), I spent 12 frustrating hours trying to get a
17mb .m4a (AAC encode) file to work on my video-podcast. (see http://
jumplive.blogspot.com). I left a post on Ourmedia forums:

http://www.ourmedia.org/node/158779

Turns out, their server is not returning MIME type "audio/mpeg" for
these files..just "text"! (it was returning "audio/mpeg" as of Jan
17). As a result, Feedburner couldn't create an enclosure for these
audio files.

The older audio files (from Jan 17) weren't being returned as "audio/
mpeg" either. I finally had to re-upload them to my own server, &
change the MIME settings. It's back fine now, & showing up on my
iTunes video-podcast (Use Feedburner/Troubleshootize/Podmedic to
confirm that enclosures are being created).

You have to use "Ourmedia Publisher" (separate program) for files
10mb or larger..otherwise your files won't load. This program is
kinda quirky on my Powerbook

Are you talking about iMovie HD 6 (that comes with iLife '06)? I
just installed it, but haven't played with it (done captures &
edits). Can you describe your issues with it?

iMovie 5 has been OK for me. (see http://jumplive.blogspot.com for
example of video-edits..just basic stuff). There have been some
intermittent crashes, which wiped out a lot of work.

I've been using iMovie HD 5 the last year (just upgrade to iMovie HD 6 yesterday, haven't played with it) with a Sony FX1 HD camcorder (even more overkill than a HC1).  I have a Powerbook 1.5G G4 (256mb of memory!?  I'm upgrading to 2G).  I also get captures at 1/4 or 1/8 speed, to the internal HD.What FW800 drive are you using?  I'm just using a Western Digital 120G external (FW), to save projects in.  I think I'm getting bandwidth issues if I try to edit projects on this external drive: hitting "play" sometimes doesn't result in any playback of frames.  ??I'm thinking of upgrading to Final Cut Express, but opted to just go with iLife '06 (iMovie HD 6).  The latter does the job for me: quick out-in-the-field edits, for offroad race videos that get blogged to http://jumplive.blogspot.com.BYAnyhow, unless you have a real need for HDV1080i (i do for historical archive reasons), then this isn't the camera for your day-to-day videoblogging.+NathanOn 2/12/06, Halcyon Lujah <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I have been unable to take advantage of the HD from my HC1. I have a similar setup - except that I have the HC1, 1GB of memory, and
I've switched to Final Cut Express. It is just much better at capturing
HDV in realtime. Ultimately, it was $99 for iLife 06 and $300 for FCE,
so I opted to upgrade. Plus you get all the great filters, plug-ins,
etc. that you'd have to pay more for with iMovie HD. Having a solid
color correction filter is really starting to make my work look better.

Not sure what specific model HD I have, but I meant to say FW 400, which
is what my 12" powerbook is using. The fact that to capture to the
external drive I have to have my camera chained through the drive is
causing some bus overload, I believe. Either that, or the processor.
Ultimately, I've found that for now, converting to DV when I am doing
quick "videoblog" style work is the best option. HDV is nice to have for
certain occasions where you'd like to use the footage down the round.

iMovie is great and amazingly powerful. I think with a slightly
underpowered setup, Final Cut Express handles HD a tad better.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Re: Videobomb.com a new digg.com for videos?

2006-02-12 Thread Michael Meiser

I don't mind their ads but I find their info bar far more intrusive than the ad. The add in fact just flashes for a single frame in players like fireant, because not all players stop at the end of a video. THey could compensate this by causing the add to play for a few seconds...   I think this model can and would work very well in a wide variety of places, but they'd need to move to mp4 (for iPod or PSP) and they'd loose their clickable links. still, the simple display of a domain name is easy enough to remember, though not as trackable. As for what you're saying with the embed code, object code and what not, that's very cool. I must admit I prejudged them a bit.So other than the format concern which is really only an issue for use on iPod and the PSP (the .mov format is widely supported enough)... oh, and the poor compression quality as someone pointed out... my only concern would be about the issue of archival permalinks. Quite frankly it's a simple fix... if someone should want to host their videos Revver could upload the various formats after putting the ads on them via FTP to their blog and create the post in wordpress and MT... It would cost them less in bandwidth and make the media urls more archival.  The tracking wouldn't be to hard to maintain even thought they'd no longer be hosting the video.Anyway, I noticed you had a Chappel Show add on the end of one of your videos... that's a very good advertiser.I guess my only other question is... what kind of money?  What's the ad rate. Usually this is expressed in "cost per thousand".  For example the recent rocketboom ad sale went for $40k for approx. one million views... that's a $40cpm (cpm = cost per thousand) Ads usually pay on a per view basis if they're graphical, or if they're textual like adwords they pay per click  aka. cost per click vs. cost per view.  I'd assume revvers ads are cost per view.I think textual ads ussually go for a $2-3 cost per thousand clicks or some such.  Visual ads web ads go much higher... video based ads should go much higher still. So, how much is revver paying per thousand of ad views?Peace,-MikeOn Feb 11, 2006, at 10:00 AM, Nerissa (TheVideoQueen) wrote: Hi Michael, Revver provides several options for posting/sharing below each video on it's page. [videoblogging] Re: My Wordpress 2.01 blog on Dreamhost has been Hacked!

2006-02-12 Thread Patrick
The problem is these things can happen at the worst time; have a
newspaper that wants to look at my vblog. It would be great if
Dreamhost had a backup they could restore; if not, I'd like to know so
I can go to Plan B.

Once I get through this fiasco, I am going to re-read all the
Rocketboom posts on crisis management. Also, I sent Dreamhost a copy
of the security scan and so far nothing. All I know is that when there
is a breach on my PC, I go into lockdown mode and secure the perimeter.

If I don't hear someting from the Dream Team soon, I'm going to try
and contact that stealth hacker/cracker "Fantasy Kid" and see what he
can do for me.

[videoblogging] Brainstorming session

2006-02-12 Thread grasshopperatyourfeet

Just wanted to take a mo' to thank you Paul for the invite to the brainstorming session this afternoon/evening.
I really enjoyed the chance to get together with some terrific folks to talk about doing something positive for a worthy cause.  Not to mention you lot are a riot!
I hope everyone who hasn't had a chance to talk with Paul Knight about this group charity vlog project will consider sending him an email to get details.
It's an awesome opportunity to do your favorite past-time/hobby/passion and something altruistic  to boot.  I mean come on, I think everyone can use more good karma in their lives right?
Any way Thanks again Paul and count me in 100% . I'll contribute in whatever way my humble novice vlogging skills will allow; even if it's only by way of footage.
Cheers!
Lisa
