Ditto and thank you for your eloquence Danny. I with they had time to
contribute to this list. They are the kind of personalities that
would add a lot of originality here. I wonder if they are lurking
here or know about this group. They may have no need or desire to
participate here though, given the hostile attitude some of the
members seem to have toward diversity.

And I really wish it would stop. I cringe every time I see a video bysomeone in this group that is using music they obviously do not have theright to use. If we are supposed to be here helping newbies get into
videoblogging, what sort of example does that set?I plead guilty, and state (again) my reasons:1. Sometimes you have to use well-known music to get a particular effect (often humor). Fanvids are an example in which neither the video nor the music belongs to the fanvid creator, who puts the two together to create something new and wonderful which is usually a compliment to (and advertising of) both sources.
2. Sometimes you just want music to create an atmosphere, but it's too hard/time consuming to find "safe" music to use. For my trailer, I wanted something Indian because a lot of the footage was shot in India. I did a bit of searching around on various "podsafe" sources, but there didn't seem to be any Indian music available except 5-second instrument samples. So I used music I was already familiar with, and kept it short (37 seconds out of a 5- or 6-minute piece), in hopes that AR Rahman would see this as fair use and a compliment - if, indeed, he ever sees it at all!
3. I own thousands of CDs and know by heart many more thousands of songs. It's a lot easier and faster for me to "search" this interior catalog (and/or my iTunes library) than to listen to hours of new music to try to find something suitable for whatever project. Editing video already takes more time than I have - I don't have time to audition the music as well!
Of course anything can be abused, but I would argue that much of the use of music in vlogs is part of the fast-growing and creatively fertile mash-up culture. We can hope (faintly!) that the music industry will eventually come around to seeing it my way. In any case, so far no one has complained about music in any of my videos (have they about anyone else's?), nor have they been removed from any service, to my knowledge, for copyright reasons.

FWIW, I have so much trouble (and disinterest) in defining what I'm doing that there is video all over my site, and not just in the "Vlog" section. Some bits I place where they illustrate points made in text on the page, some are slices of life with no particular relevance to anything except the date on which they were filmed. I've got several videos repeated in different parts of my site now because they are relevant to things going on in several places.
By and large, I don't bother my pretty little head about what to CALL it - I just do it.-- best regards,Deirdré Straughanwww.beginningwithi.com

[videoblogging] Re: how to make a "feed" page redirect to feedburner?

2006-02-23 Thread Bill Streeter
I've had major problems doing this with an .htaccess file. I have been
following the instructions for wordpress found here:
http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=17 with no luck. I've
also tried to use a Wordpress plugin (found here:
http://orderedlist.com/download/) that is supposed to do this but it's
never worked for me.

So any insight to this would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty sure I
have at least a few subscribers on my direct wordpress feed because I
see them on the server stats, but obviously there really isn't anyway
to know how many there are.

2006-02-23 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I've been struggling with this as well. I don't think I have access to my .htaccess on DreamHost, so I'm using a manual approach. I wanted to get the iTunes people moved over, so I put this into my feed (per instructions from somewhere on the Apple site, which I found in this group I think):
http://feeds.feedburner.com/DeirdrStraughanI changed my real feed (the one I give FeedBurner as a source) to a new, non-publicized address, and  changed the old feed to have only one item, which asks subscribers to subscribe to the FeedBurner feed instead.
Each of these steps bumped up my FB subscriptions a bit, though it's still nothing to shout about... I'm still getting a lot of pings on the old feed. Presumably those are from people who aren't actually reading/watching anyway, or don't care enough to change the address so they can keep up with new stuff.

[videoblogging] Computer Screen Recording

2006-02-23 Thread Joseph Puentes
Hello,

I've done a couple of videos at http://joseph27703.blip.tv/ and
http://BlueHeron2.blogspot.com

but that's now why I'm emailing you all. I have the need for a program
that lets you "RECORD" the movement of the mouse on the screen as you go
from URL to URL on the Internet.

Are there any low cost options for getting a reasonably good recording
of the computer activity so I can incorporate this information into my
new video projects?

If the only options out there are not low cost please let me know about
them also.

thanks,

If you're on a Mac the best is SnapzProX. I think it's $79.If you're on a PC, I'd go with Camstudio which is Free. Some people also like Wink on a PC. There is also Camtasia but it's $300 and doesn't do everything that the free Camstudio does.

[videoblogging] blip.tv infrastructure

2006-02-23 Thread mikehudack
Hey guys,

I'm Mike Hudack, one of the founders of blip.tv. Just wanted to let
you know a few things about the current status of blip.tv.

First of all, some good news: I'm going full-time. I gave notice at
my day job last week, and my last day is a week from tomorrow. In the
meantime, I'm taking more time on blip than I have in the past (since
everyone knows about it now!)

The second piece of good news: we are signing a contract with a major
Tier One ISP for a new feed that should completely solve our current
performance problems. They promise installation in three days, but it
could take longer if our current ISP drags their feet in terms of
installation. Either way, within a few days, our performance problems
should be a thing of the past.

In the meantime, we're still distributing load across two ISPs at two
different locations, and tuning our process for doing so. We're
getting much better at it, but with the amount of content we're
pushing it's tough going. The new installation will solve this
problem, and we're doing everything we can between now and then to
make things fast.

If you guys have any questions, concerns, problems, feedback,
whatever, please feel free to call me on my personal cell phone. My
number is 646-827-9773. You can also IM me on AOL Instant Messenger
-- I'm on as "mikehudack".

Please don't hesitate to call or IM. You guys are our business, and
it pains me to have any problems at all in serving you. We have
investment dollars now, we have new feeds coming in, we have people
full-time. The performance problems are temporary. What's not
temporary is our commitment to you and videoblogging in general.
We're here for the long term.

Yours,

Mike

I, too, have a LaCie Porsche drive (250) and it has been nothing but good to
me. It will likely
be the only thing with the word "Porsche" on it that I will ever own. It's
small in size,
unobtrusive and speedy. Why LaCie makes so much out of the Porsche aspect of
the product
is beyond me...it's just a small silver box.

I was thinking of doing exactly that-- I have the top of a tripod that
broke, and it wouldn't be that hard to rig it onto my walking stick.

I use the mini-tripod because it's very lightweight and I can set it
up with the timer so I can be in the shot at further than arm's
length.

timer? is that so you don't have to edit so much? ;)

or is that only in reference to still shots :)

i have this image in my mind of you racing the timer in order to be all
composed in front of your vid cam before it starts recording.  why
bother?  i just stroll on out there and think "action!" (i think that
snapz prox has warped me).

seems like the time would be just for stills or am i missing a tip
here? (i know, wait for the book)

i think someone once remarked at vloggercue east that you can tell
vloggers from others because they start to move when the camera comes
out, non-vloggers tend to "hold still and say cheese"

[videoblogging] Can't get cross-posting on blip to work.

2006-02-23 Thread Brett Gaylor

Hey - anyone got cross posting working on blip with a Movable Type account?  I can't seem to get this to happen.

I put in the admin address, which for me is:
http://etherworks.ca/mt/mt.cgi

blip guesses my "endpoint api" as this:
http://etherworks.ca/mt/mt-xmlrpc.cgi

Then I enter my username and password...
and then it says
"We were unable to log in to your blogging system. Please check your username and password and try again."

I've entered my password correctly, for sure.  any idea what gives?  Anything I have to set in Movable Type?-- ---Brett Gaylorhttp://www.etherworks.ca

It's absolutely a good idea to make your own music, or find/buyroyalty-free podsafe music. If you do anything else, you're takinga risk. But also keep in mind, the boundaries of Fair Use have notbeen fully tested in court. I sometimes choose to take the risk
on my non-commercial personal vlog, crediting the artist, ratherthan inhibit my creativity. No cease-and-desists, so far.
I'm with Chuck.  I think sometimes the fair use argument needs to
be tested (although, I'm not sure Zadi's would hold up, at least on the
green day side of things...the footage yes).

The center for social media (http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org)
published a very good "Best Practices For Fair Use" that would an
interesting thread topic.

And on the other hand, I think we should be using podsafe music as a
matter of principle as well.  If we want to start sowing the
future with work that others can freely sample, we have to make
completely CC Safe stuff, music included.

Not sure about Deidre's argument - just because you like a song, or its
the best one for your vlog, doesn't qualify it as fair use.  Now,
if you want to push or argue for some ammendment to the law that makes
an exemption for personal or non-commercial use, I could get behind
that.  The problem there is where do you draw the line? Would you
want someone using your work in a homophobic film, or a KKK
video?  My personal feelings tend toward anarchy, but I'm not sure
you can build a system on that :)

By the way, you guys are LUCKY to have this argument.  In Canada, our fair use rights are extremely narrow.

and PS, sorry couldn't change the title of the thread, gmail doesn't seem to allow that when you reply?

The perfect example of a potentially legitimate use of copyrightedmusic is Zadi's "When September Ends" video, which was written
about in the NY Times Critic's Notebook:http://smashface.com/vlog/20050924nytimes.htmlThen of course there's my "Welcome to the Future" video
which deals with this whole clash between copyright and ourdesire to capture, share, remix:http://blogumentary.typepad.com/vlog/2005/03/videoblog_week__2.html
Keep in mind Zadi and I could hear from record company lawyers.Maybe we could get the EFF to defend, but more likely it'seasier to simply remove the video. Worst case scenario would behaving to pay a fine, if the RIAA charges we're illiegally distributing
music. That would suck.-chuckhttp://mnstories.com--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Pete Prodoehl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

[videoblogging] My revolutionary MSRC charity fund raiser

2006-02-23 Thread Paul Knight

Hi GuysI know that I probably started this all wrong and got caught up in my own self doubt, but now is the time for all good gentlemen(or women) to come to the aid of the party.  I have started a collaboration with many vloggers both here and in the States or Canada to do a vlogging charity fund raiser.  It started off as a little thing but has grown into a bigger thing.I have the advice of Bill Streeter, the GOD amongst men of lofistl, and the sage wisdom of Bev Sykes.  The Technical Know how of SocialNinja and the sexiness and lets face it, talent of Mskitka. The basic loveliness of Kitykity, and the awesome editing talent which is Conrad Slater, amongst others to create the first vlogging charity thingy mi jig, for the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre.I am looking for able bodied people to help out with this project.  It needs be 30 seconds long, the size of an advert.  To highlight and entertain and educate as to what Multiple Sclerosis can do to an able bodied person.  The synopsis is this, 30 seconds of symptoms, from basics to high level "let's call the doctor," kinda HELP!a list of the symptoms can be found at:Physical symptoms may include any of the following:Muscle and Motor Disturbances including: loss of control of one or more limbs; swallowing difficulties; inability to perform fine movements - e.g. doing up buttons, tying shoe laces etc; Legs or arms may suddenly go into spasm which is often painful, and walking may become very difficult when sticks or a wheelchair may be necessary.Loss of Co-ordination & Spasticity including: vertigo; ataxia; staggering; clumsiness (spilling and dropping things).Fatigue including: intense desire for rest affecting motor and/or sensory nerves; dizziness.Visual including: retro-bulbar (behind the eye ball) & optic neuritis (inflammation of the nerve); nystagmus (rhythmical oscillation of the eye balls, either horizontal, vertical or rotary); double or blurred vision (a common first symptom); temporary blindness.Sensory including: impairment of sensory perception; loss of feeling, numbness, tingling; different degrees and kinds of pain.L'hermittes sign is an electric shock-like sensation which radiates down the back and into the legs when someone flexes their neck. It is a common early symptom of MS. In itself it is not a diagnostic however. It simply indicates a particular type of nerve damage, for which there are a variety of causes.Bladder & Bowel including: frequency; urgency; retention; constipation; incontinence.Speech including: slurring; scanning.Psychological - cognitive problems -  including: loss of memory and mental concentration; depression.Sexual including: loss of sensation and/or lubrication; impotence.Pain is one of the lesser known symptoms of MS which, now at long last, is being acknowledged and treated.Depression and Anxiety can also be associated with MS.Multiple Sclerosis "Hug" or "Girdle" - This is the term for one of the rather strange and weird symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis which can be classed as one of the many invisible symptoms but also as a spasm-type symptom.Symptoms can become more pronounced when the MS is active and may lessen or disappear again when the MS is quiet. In some people, symptoms fluctuate when the person is tired, upset or anxious.Emotional difficulties arise from the uncertainties associated with MS as the unpredictability of the disease means that no one knows when or how it is going to strike. The disease is usually characterised by attacks followed by periods of recovery ( relapsing/remitting type of MS) although each attack tends to leave some residual problems.Their is an e-mail sent out to everyone who signs up a 10 Ways To Blag MS page which my wife a sufferer of MS can tell you about.I wish to include as many people who frequent this site involved, and rest assured all who submit will be sown in the final donate here version.  This will raise recognition of the illness as well as videoblogging.  Anyone interested should e-mail me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED], Love be with you allPaul Knight Do yourself a favour and Visit my Vlog http://pjkproductions.blogspot.com http://pjkweddingvideo.blogspot.com It's worth a laugh and (mostly) work friendly.

Good point, but i'm talking about work that isn't released under a CC
license.  What I was getting at was that if they didn't intend
their work to be used this way, how would one feel if their work was
used in a way they didn't intend or disagreed with?

Actually playing devil's advocate in this case, anyway.

[videoblogging] audience and RSS

2006-02-23 Thread Josh Leo

I have been thinking a little bit about subscription numbers, feedburner stats and all that crap that we use to uselessly evaluate our "place in the vlogosphere" My findings seem to point towards specific audience/topic as being the key motivator for subscribers.
Let's take GETV for example. They started in November of 2005. Their vlog consists of interviews with the "big name" people of the blogosphere that they meet at conferences or in San Francisco. Somehow their subscription numbers have shot up very quick. This is most likely because the people who are most interested in that information are also the people who are using RSS aggregators the most. It is somewhat simple reflexive system, if you talk about bloggers, then bloggers will talk about you and subscribe to your blog.
Rocketboom seems to dwell in this realm, but at times drifts out into the greater world of the internet, I am sure that their forays into the quirky snags them a different audience that views content differently (not using RSS)
I believe that if someone made a videoblog about hiking, their content would most likely not be viewed via RSS but my singular page viewsRSS is still unknown to the rest of the world, most people I know don't even know what an aggreagator is. Many of my friends who have blogs on Xanga or Blogger don't even know what a feed is or that they even have one...
I guess this just goes to show that subscribers is not popularity of content, but popularity of content within a select group of people who use RSS, therefore the topics that get the most subscribers are the ones that are geared more towards the blog/tech/gadget side of the spectrum...
Screw subscription numbers, just make content!!!thank you...-- Josh Leojoshleo.comstonefarm.blogspot.com

I thought this a relevant post on Boing today.

Diane Duane, author of the wildly successful Young Wizards fantasy

"The Big Meow" one chapter at a time, releasing a new chapter every
time her donations pot crosses her minimum-to-publish threshold.

[videoblogging] Need help w/ vlogging panel

2006-02-23 Thread Ivettza Sanchez
Hello Vloggers!

Long time lurker, first time poster :) I work for Public Access in
Manhattan (for those of you that know jay - i work w/ him) and we're
starting to get the ball rolling here at MNN w/ videoblogging. To
kick things off we're having a panel on Wednesday March 1st. If you're
in the area we would love for you to come.
You can RSVP here:
http://www.mnn.org/vlog.html

Anyways, even though i have my own vlog, and i post (just not as
regularly as i would like to) I'm not necessarily familiar with all of
the issues concerning vlogging.
I'll be moderating the panel and i would love any help that
experienced vloggers can give me.
For example what issues do i need to be sure to touch on, things that
we should make sure that we talk about.

Many thanks,
Ivettza :)

No, Markus-- the timer is only for stills. But it holds true for video
as well-- you can't get yourself in the shot with a monopod unless
someone else is holding it (or you hammer it into the dirt, I suppose).

or is that only in reference to still shots :)

i have this image in my mind of you racing the timer in order to be all

bother?  i just stroll on out there and think "action!" (i think that
snapz prox has warped me).

seems like the time would be just for stills or am i missing a tip

i think someone once remarked at vloggercue east that you can tell
vloggers from others because they start to move when the camera comes
out, non-vloggers tend to "hold still and say cheese"

If it's really fair use. I've seen plenty of uses of copyrighted music
where it does not seem to be for "criticism, comment, news reporting,
teaching, scholarship, or research" and more for the fact that the
person creating the video liked the music and thought it complemented

Agreed. I'm working towards a future where artists can control how their
work is used, easily and clearly. Today too many artists have no control
over the things they create.

I wouldn't want my work used in a homophobic film or KKK video, but as
mentioned, if they followed the licensing terms, etc. it's sort of the
price of freedom. Since my stuff is cc:by-nc-sa they'd have to follow
the 'by' by mentioning/linking to me, I'd be pretty sure to publish
something stating my own beliefs on the matter.

[videoblogging] Creative Commons Video Inserts?

2006-02-23 Thread Ms. Kitka
I've been impressed at the way some people put Creative Licenses on
their videos and was wondering if there is a place to find good
quality open source versions of them. Michael Verdi had a nice one at
the end of his father's vlog that I was drooling over and I'm sure
most people make them themselves.

I spent a couple of hours fiddling with my outro the other night to
make a nice new Creative Commons video clip that includes the symbols
of Attribution, No Money and Share Alike... is there a place to find
and use these already made or do we just have to do it all ourselves?

It would be nice if Creative Commons could make some kind of standard
for us to use if we want to...

Sounds like we need the creation of a "visit counter" that combines

[videoblogging] Re: blip.tv infrastructure

2006-02-23 Thread Susan
You guys do so much for us... WHERE IS THE DONATION BUTTON? (lol)

One thing I have been thinking about the past week or six... and this
is a little off-topic... but have y'all ever thought about
time-released blip-blog posts? In other words, if I upload a video
today, can there maybe be a date field, so that it won't actually show
up in my vlog until tomorrow? I would like to make 3-4 videos at a
time, upload them all at once, but only have one released a day...
someday could this be possible?

Ideally we would all host our own files for free and have completely accurate stats to know how many times our videos are viewed but frankly, I don't understand why we need counters on our sights anyway...

[videoblogging] Re: Will The Bubble Up Fizzle Down?

2006-02-23 Thread Susan
Ugh. Bubbling hurts my tummy.

I'm such an un-avid-fan of popularity contests... so here's the best I
can offer, from an I-don't-have-the-time working mother.

I have a "vlogroll," which is actually powered by blogrolling.com .
Many people have a vlogroll--a list of links on the sidebar of their
page--say, their ten favorite vlogs.

If I like the vlog I'm reading, maybe I'll venture to check out one of
the vlogs on that person's vlogroll. They would only put vlogs up
there they liked, right?

And then from that vlog, I could click on a link from their
vlogroll... and so on...

That's about as good a reference as I can suggest--friend to friend.
There's not much else that will work for me personally--or that I will
take the time to learn.

[videoblogging] Mississippi vlogs.

2006-02-23 Thread Susan
I am still amazed that there is still not one single vlog (at least on
vlogmap.org) in the entire state of Mississippi. We have to remedy this.

Before the hurricane, Biloxi MS was one of my favorite places on
earth. It still is, though it will never be the same... I keep
thinking about making a vlog post about it, but every time I think
about it, it's too depressing...

Still? Wow. I'm amazed, too. If you are a Mississippi Vlogger, let's
meet near Jackson! Contact me!

It is rather depressing. All of us care about rebuilding, and my
guess is that those directly involved are busy doing it rather than
documenting it. Katrina has changed the States' focus for many many
years to come.

iTunes is probably my own subscription, as are some of those Firefox
and Mozilla views. I note FireAnt isn't on the list-- not sure what
that means; perhaps "QuickTime" is the FireAnt pull? So most people
viewing the vlog have checked it out on the web.

If you want, I can keep you updated when the vlog turns into more than just a crappy mish-mash of badly-edited clips and images.

RSS is still unknown to the rest of the world, most people
I know don't even know what an aggreagator is. Many of my friends who
have blogs on Xanga or Blogger don't even know what a feed is or that
they even have one...
I guess this just goes to show that subscribers is not
popularity of content, but popularity of content within a select group
of people who use RSS, therefore the topics that get the most
subscribers are the ones that are geared more towards the
blog/tech/gadget side of the spectrum...
Screw subscription numbers, just make content!!!thank you...-- Josh Leojoshleo.com

In iTunes under the iPod preferences, there is a checkbox that says
something like 'Enable Disk Usage' which will allow your iPod to show up
on your desktop as just another hard drive.

I host my videos at ourmedia.org, but through the magic of some code and
the 302 Found header, I have two cgi's on my site that I use to redirect
to the videos. One is called hit.cgi and the other is enclose.cgi - I
use the hit one in the videoblog post, and the enclose one in the feed.
What these do is record clicks in my logs before doing a redirect to the
actual video.I had hoped to get some idea of how many people view via
the site versus the feed, but one of the problems is all of the sites
out there that read the RSS feed and then display the video on the page.
I still get some idea by the numbers, but that seems to skew the
enclose/feed number a bit.

Here is an example of the stats I see.

/hit.cgi/http:/www.archive.org/download/Training_Video/20060204trainingvideo.mov

Note that I've wanted to build a pretty interface for this, but for now
I just look at the Analog report.

Its too expensive for a toy, bbut if you are an archive whore or do
video for DVDs and such, I would recommend the Terastation by Buffalo.
 I LOVE it.

http://www.buy.com/prod/Buffalo_TeraStation_1TB_NAS_RAID_1_0_5_Back_up/q/loc/101/10396259.html

$750, networked terabyte (700 gigs with RAID setup. Meaning: 4 drives,
and any one failure will result in zero data loss.)

plus it just feels cool to have a terabyte in my bedroom.

I just switched our file hosting from ourmedia to libsyn and libsn has
great and addicting stats. They're lowest plan is $5/month and

Most are not big name, but yes, we do have easy access to some well
known geeks in SF. You have discovered our little secret, cover people
with blogs and they cover you. I'm sure that most of our viewers are
geeks or geekily inclined and that probably does translate to RSS
subscriptions. We do get another 1000 or so views directly from the
website within a few days of a new vid posting, though our blip stats are
totally skewed because of the MSBITS problem.

Agreed, but Rocketboom also has a clean inviting interface to view
episodes in a browser. Even though I consume most vlogs via RSS, I
always go to Rocketboom's site to see them. Maybe it's the easy
access to comments which for me is a big part of the experience.

I think this fast changing. People don't have to know the terms
'aggregator' or 'RSS feed' to know that itunes is a way to listen and
watch audio and video content.

Possibly, but look at the top itunes podcasts. Some of the "video podcasts" that
bubble up to the top are: Strong Bad Email, Tiki Bar TV, Happy Tree Friends,
Vintage ToonCast.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Will The Bubble Up Fizzle Down?

2006-02-23 Thread Soumyadeep Paul

Well... since you mention A.R.Rahman, I thought perhaps the (only?) Indian here should pitch in his two cents. I would say that the temptation is huge, but then as any video/film creator would say, sound contributes a huge lot to the video itself. If that's the case, whenever we take music from anyone else (royalty free or not), we don't remain the sole creators. Hence attribution is a must. The difficult question to answer, however, is whether we *should* use it at all or not. While, like most questions in the universe, there is no right or wrong answer to this, but (just in case you feel that you did something wrong):1. The entire Indian music and film industry is based on copyright violation -- every film that comes out of the west is copied, remixed, scenes stolen frame-to-frame, stories lifted right out and pasted with Indian dialogues... it doesn't stop at that. The entire Indian music industry picks up songs from 1960s/70s (the golden era of Indian music and films) and remixes them and makes money. I can hardly remember the last original piece of work I saw. Is that a copyright violation? One of the most successful films that came out last year - Black - by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a straight off lift from Miracle Worker (Helen Keller stuff), and the director had the audacity to send the film to Cannes/Academy awards with the hope of winning best foreign film. I wish someone just listed out the copies floating around in the market and found out a way to catch the thieves. But then again...2. In a world where we all know each other, copyright would become useless because we would know if its your original or not. As it is, the copyright laws are highly skewed, and so is the entire economics around the media industry -- for instance, I understand paying $15 for an album in US... but when you go to Asian countries and the same album sells at a similar price (where the dollar conversion is 50 times the currency!), I start wondering if this is "right" (Rs 700 of album price buys probably 70 meals for some sections of society). Obviously, things are not as they should be. We all know that... and I believe that at the very heart, this ongoing media revolution is nothing but letting the market decide what's right and wrong instead of corporate players. So, whatever your policy is Dierdre, I don't think there is a black-or-white explanation.  On 23-Feb-06, at 3:38 PM, Deirdre Straughan wrote: On 2/22/06, Pete Prodoehl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: And I really wish it would stop. I cringe every time I see a video bysomeone in this group that is using music they obviously do not have theright to use. If we are supposed to be here helping newbies get into videoblogging, what sort of example does that set?I plead guilty, and state (again) my reasons:1. -- best regards,Deirdré Straughanwww.beginningwithi.com (personal)www.tvblob.com (work) SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use YAHOO! I have a Maxtor One Touch 300GB that I've been using for a while now.
It hasn't given me any problems (knock wood). I downloaded that LaCie

the external once a week, and I use the other partition for extra

I also back up some of my files to my old 40GB iPod ... it's otherwise unused now that I've upgraded.-- http://kellybelly.net

Re: [videoblogging] audience and RSS

2006-02-23 Thread Deirdre Straughan

Very good point re RSS.One of the beauties of hosting yourself is that you can get all your own stats and analyze them however you want (I have bled for both analog and awstats now...) . I know how many people are viewing each of the versions of each video I post: flv - they have to be looking at the page on the site; m4v is most likely iTunes, but could be some other aggregator; SWF is some other aggregator or feedreader, but definitely not iTunes.
Now I need to take it to the next level and figure out, on average, how many people are actually watching my videos all the way through. The numbers do matter if you hope (as I do) to eventually attract enough traffic to make the damn thing pay. That's not
why I do it, but... we're all looking for validation and, in our capitalist world, the ultimate validation is money in the bank. Artistic freedom is all very well, but it won't put my kid through college.

This is most likely because the people who are most interested in that information are also the people who are using RSS aggregators the most.
