Hey I need some vlog promos for my next post. If you want to give your
vlog some good (I think) exposure just make a 10 to 20 second promo
and upload it somewhere and let me know where it is so I can download
it and include it in my next post. Actually just post the link to this
list so anyone can download it and use it if they want.

Fair warning: my next post will have nudity in it so if you have a
problem with that let me know and I'll hold it for next week.

Thanks!

[videoblogging] Re: vPIP 0.12 Beta is out

2006-03-27 Thread Enric
They are apples and oranges, or rather tape video tape and
videoplayer. One is not better than the other, one (SWF) is required
for the other (FLV) to be viewed. FLV is like a video tape, you can't
view it by pulling the tape out of the cartride and looking at it.
You need a videoplayer to see the magnetic encoding. FLV is a media
file, like quicktime .mov or windows media .avi files.

Currently in many browsers and many operating systems there's players
already installed to play .mov and .avi files. They're usually the
quicktime player and windows media player respectively. There's
currently no SWF player that comes with browers or operating systems
to play FLV files. People have to either to create a SWF player or
get one someone else has written, like the FLV plugin you tried for
Wordpress.

Enric ... thanks again for the quick reply, and, not to be annoying or anything ... and I will still definately try out your cool tool with .swf files ... but, what I wondered is why would .flv be BETTER than .swf. So, for example, why would you be motivated to create an application for .flv files, if .swf will work? Why did macromedia (adobe) develop the .flv format? Why is it better than what already existed?
(One thing I note in the new dreamweaver, which creates these players automatically, there is a quick start option, like for .mov files, and I'm not sure if that is possible with .swf) Richard

Any videobloggers in Brazil, Africa, and western Asia?

A total eclipse of the Sun that will take place on Wednesday, March 29?

...that'd be cool to see a mashup of a few different points of view of
the event.

[videoblogging] Re: vPIP 0.12 Beta is out

2006-03-27 Thread Enric
FLV is the Flash Video File Format. SWF is the file format for Flash
applications. You create a SWF player for viewing the FLV file in the
Flash development environment. FLV can't be viewed on it's own, it
needs a player to access it. Similar to MP4 requires the quicktime or
windows media player to view the mp4 file, FLV requires a SWF
application to view it.

[videoblogging] Re: Video management system

2006-03-27 Thread Aaron Valdez
For the time being I just save everything to an external hard drive
folder name "Vlog." I save a DV-quality Quicktime File, the
compressed .mp4, and the JPG still as the same name so they all appear
together when I open the folder.

I also compile the blogs in one timeline in Final Cut Pro until I have
thirty minutes worth. I'll put them on MiniDV with a little intro and
outro like Aaron's Video Blog and the dates. I'll make a lo-fi DVD
with iDVD and submit it to the local Public Access Channel for air.

I find this works best for me, but I usually use what I import right
away and then get it off.

I can understand the confusion if you are doing videos where you are
pulling images from an ever-growing library. In that case I'd probably
splurge on another external hard drive as my usable video archive and
batch capture and label like crazy as you say your doing. You could
create themed folders on this external hard drive like "Conversations"
"Driving Shots" "Flowers" etc. Definitely keep raw footage separate
from completed work on your tapes. Separate raw footage and completed
video tapes on the shelf. You sound like your way ahead of the game
already. I can't even bring myself to Batch Capture.

[videoblogging] Re: vPIP 0.12 Beta is out

2006-03-27 Thread Enric
It all looked correct to me on a quick overview of the HTML. Then
testing it, I saw that flash FLV is being used. FLV is not yet
supported in vPIP, flash SWF is supported. I'll put that limitation
in the documentation, thanks for bringing this example to my
attention. I will support FLV's in a future release that I'll
announce here and on the installation and usage page:

http://utilities.cinegage.com/videos-playing-in-place/

Your .mov file will work well. You'll need to replace the href= to the
mov file,
http://www.richardshow.com/videos/06_01_29_hall_christmas_b.mov, and
change type= to "video/quicktime". Here's how it will look:

   http://www.richardshow.com/videos/06_01_29_hall_christmas_b.mov";
rel="enclosure" type="video/quicktime" onclick="vPIPPlay(this, '');
return false;">
  http://www.richardshow.com/images/thumbnail/06_01_29_hall_christmas_b.jpg";
/>

I've put a sample of it on my vPIP test page:

http://utilities.cinegage.com/vpip-test-page/

Scroll down to the bottom for your entry.

Thanks for trying out vPIP and the feedback on how to improve it.

   :),

   Enric

P.S. If you copy the example above straight here you may get
unnecessary line breaks. It's probably better to change the href= and
type= manualy.

Enric,I would love to use this, but I having trouble getting it to work.I think I followed the directions on the web site for installing in word press and putting the code in the page, and it appears that it did automatically insert the _javascript_ in the head that you said that some wordpress themes wouldn't do.

[videoblogging] Video management system

2006-03-27 Thread Zadi
Hey all,

I'm curious as to what you all use to manage your video files. Mine
are getting pretty out of control, and besides the regular batch
importing in FCP and exporting and logging all of my tapes into a file
system...I'm wondering what everyone here is doing to organize themselves.

I'm also tagging my files so I can find them in Spotlight - but it's
so time consuming. It would be great if FCP integrated some tagging
elements within their app. And some of the other apps I've found
aren't well integrated with FCP - which means an extra step anyway.
What are some of the ways you guys do it. I'm curious. Thx. :)

[videoblogging] Re: Just in case you're wondering...

2006-03-27 Thread Casey McKinnon
On my most recent episode of Kitkast I announced that I would be going
on haitus to work on my new show. If all goes well, I plan on
sticking with the new show...

I don't want to say that Kitkast is over, but I CAN say that I've run
out of lingerie! Who knows... perhaps someday in the near future I'll
cast a new little number to play the part of Ms. Kitka. Until then,
Kitkast is on haitus...

Although I love the final result of Kitkast I didn't always like the
boundaries I made for it. With it's tight formatting, I found that I
didn't have the creative freedom I would have liked. The other
problem was that if I were to get sponsorship to help me out with the
show, it would have been sex or porn-related (ie. not anyone I would
really like to do business with).

The format of the new show will not only give me more creative
freedom, it will also (hopefully) inspire others to contribute to
videoblogging and amateur film-making. After all, that's what web
2.0's supposed to be all about, isn't it?

[videoblogging] new wikipedia category for video bloggers

2006-03-27 Thread Andy Carvin

Hi everyone,

I've just created a new category on Wikipedia that can be added to the
bottom of wikipedia entries about prominent video bloggers.

If you create or come upon a wikipedia entry of a vlogger, you can add
this tag at the bottom of the entry:

[[Category:Video Bloggers|lastname, firstname]]

Be sure to replace lastname and firstname with their actual name. Once
you've done that, they'll appear in this category list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_Bloggers

From what I've seen, there aren't too many entries about individual
vloggers. Compare that with the Podcasts category:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Podcasts

Andrew and Amanda from Rocketboom are in Wikipedia, and I'm there too
(but for my digital divide work rather than vlogging, it seems). I did a
few other random vlogger name searches (Steve Garfield, Michael Verdi,
etc) but came up with bupkus. Seems like we need to get proactive at
getting some of our notable vlog personalities included in Wikipedia.

Any thoughts on who else should be in Wikipedia? It'll have to pass the
wikipedia sniff test, though: you should be able to argue that they are
of "prominence" and/or "importance"; otherwise it's possible the entry
will get deleted as a vanity article.

Maybe you could sign your e-mails with both names for a week or two? I
know the name change is going to confuse me quite a bit for a while. :o)

The name "Kitka" all started as a pet name... so if you want, Bill, go
right ahead and keep using it! ;) I want to use my real name, though,
because I'm proud of my hard work and I dislike the idea of being
someone else for the rest of my life. Also, if I decide to turn any
of my work professional... it helps to use my own name.

[videoblogging] Re: Video mashup mania

2006-03-27 Thread Steve Watkins
Greetings,

Good stuff :) The vision of a grassroots marketplace emerging that
brings bands and visual remixers together is nice, something I support
strongly, and something that has come up from time to time on
VJforums. Plenty of VJs just want to do live stuff, some are part of
AV groups so already have music, but there seem to also be plenty of
VJs who fit right into the mashup culture. So it been a dream for a
few years of getting more collaboration between bands, labels and VJs.
However not much has been done to facilitate this so far.

So when I found out about video blogging, I was fascinated with the
parallels, on many levels, between VJing and videoblogging, in terms
of source material, remixing, tools, techniques and the final result.
And I have been a lot more hopeful that online media / videoblogging
etc groups would be more likely to be able to actually build the
online and offline relationships needed to facilitate sane and easy
collaboration between different sorts of artists & distributors.

Anyway I have been unable to contribute much to this cause myself,
chronic lack of time. Im now a bit out of date with the current online
mashup community etc. I would like VJCentral & VJForums to be part of
some sort of mashup network, as there is a subsection of the VJ
community that would surely like to be a part of this stuff. VJCentral
is currently being slowly redeveloped so that a new version will
emerge using drupal and having the ability to harness lots of the web
stuff thats appeared over the last few yeears (blogging, tags, video
etc). Also VJCentral as an organisation has not really formally
existed in the past, so hasnt done much networking or attempts to
forge partnerships with other organisations. This year we are hoping
this will change, and it strikes me that once we have a org setup and
a new system powering the web side of things, we would like to talk to
orgs like Ourmedia and Outhink to see if there is the possibility of a
mutually beneficial partnership in areas where there is common interest.

With that in mind I have a question about this mashup stuff. Is there
any particular partnering organisation that was the primary driving
force for this mashup stuff, does one of them have such things as one
of its core aims? I dont know if Im wording the question right, I
guess I am interested in whether this is something that will be
expanded upon in future, and whether its in the form of a new
website/service/social network thing, or as part of an existing thing
like ourmedia? Because I want to know who the right people and groups
are to talk to about this in future.

So to repeat myself with a bit more detail, VJCentral has some users
who would be interested in one or more of the following:

Making videos for bands/musicians/labels (& also VJing live for them
if appropriate)
Making video clips/scenes/graphics for other people to use
Using clips from other peoples video
Watching mashups created by other people
Remixing & mashup culture in general
A range of economic options from free to fee
A range of copyright etc options from public domain and CC to full
copyright & exclusivity stuff.

And probably some other stuff Im not thinking of right now, certainly
I keep thinking there are loads of VJing software/hardware tools that
certain kinds of videobloggers and mashers could use to have a lot
more fun & positive results, and certain VJs who could use help
harnessing the new online media realities that have emerged in the
last few years.

Cheers

Steve of Elbows

I'm currently working on a brand new show, under a brand new name,
with the subject matter I love most... I know it sounds cryptic, but
give me a couple of weeks and all will be revealed. I'll make a quick
announcement post here when I launch the new show.

It's hard to anticipate applications, but I suppose I could just
continue building a generic service that could be used for many
purposes. It will be interesting to see what people do with it. The
applications you mention could certainly work in this generic system.

I think what's missing in this discussion is that many people do want
to be famous and this is one way to achieve that goal. Moreover, many
people would probably find it fascinating to see what others do all
day -- just out of curiosity.

Re: [videoblogging] Broadcast your computer usage live on the net.

2006-03-27 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Amir, I think the feedback so far is that your initial assumption that
people will find value in watching people work, or broadcasting a
desktop while they work, is probably not going to be the great
application of this tool.

What you have to remember is that there are already tools for a lot of
what you've mentioned as possible applications. For instance, getting
help with a search is a matter of saying "I searched for these
keywords in Google, but didn't find anything." Typically, people will
respond with better keywords, boolean search technique tips, or direct
URLs to the information needed. That's a basic text exchange, and it
takes about 10 KB of bandwidth. I cannot imagine why someone would
want to download several megabytes of video to see someone else fail
at a search term, when it can be done with so much less.

But let's talk about other applications for a streaming screencast,
ones that may be more viable:
* What am I watching? Could be cool for videoblog viewers, but only if
the stream takes less bandwidth than a normal vlog.
* Usability studies, but here the people participating would need to
have some incentive for providing this data to the world (by which I
mean more than just 15 minutes of fame, because that only guarantees
participation for 15 minutes). I could see something like the
aggregated data crunching teams (like [EMAIL PROTECTED]), but for usability
studies for major software products. With prizes. (One of the things I
learned in my usability classes was that you should give the
participants a gift to thank them for their help.)
* How-tos, seminars, and online education (this is the #1 best
application I can think of-- nothing but a screencast can adequately
explain how to do certain things on a computer.)
* Similarly, online sales demos
* Social networking, for instance to post a video transcript of a
videoconference to a website.
* Install-fests, for instance for an online Linux User Group to
broadcast the installation process. since a kernel install is often
without web browser or even network card, though, I don't know if this
one is feasible.

Re: [videoblogging] Are you still using 3ivx withQuickTime?

2006-03-27 Thread Michael Verdi

I'm still using 3ivx for a couple of reasons. As Pete mentioned that H.264 doesn't work well with older machines - this is very true. Also if you want to make an iPod compatible file and use H.264 the only way to do it is with QuickTime's save for iPod feature which will squish your video if you are starting with DV footage. Apple recently did something that makes the old workaround for creating an mp4 file with
H.264 not work anymore (you can still make the files but they will no longer transfer to the iPod). So for iPod compatiblility that leaves Apples's mpeg4 or 3ivx and 3ivx is much better quality.3ivx costs $20 (though there is nothing to prevent you from using it without paying). You don't need QT Pro to use it. If you're on a PC and want iPod compatible files you'll also need access to the AAC audio codec which you can only get via QuickTime Pro.

What I propose gives you an additional source of information that you
can use to select people. It's not a replacement for resumes,
interviews, etc.

Watching someone code live gives you some information that might be
hard to pick up otherwise:

* how quickly does this person think?
* how error-prone is this person?
* how does the software design emerge?
* how does this person debug?

Technical interviews do try to get into people's heads as they solve puzzles.

What I propose allows you to get into people's heads as they write
non-trivial code over long periods of time. It also gives you an
insight into what they would do on a daily basis.

BTW, if you are a university student trying to impress potential
employers over a long period of time before graduating, would you not
want to work live?

And wouldn't companies have an incentive to watch these broadcasts to
identify talented people?  For example, software companies would
probably get a better picture of how a programmer will work on a daily
basis by watching them code on an open source project for long periods
of time.

Let me speak as a software professional. I'm working on a Ph.D in
computer science, am employed by Motorola, and was a developer of Google
Talk.

Watching a coder's screen is really not an effective way of getting a feel
for a coder's talent. There are a few reasons. The first is that, if a
coder puts in an 8 hour day, it's going to take at least 2 hours to watch
it. This is massively wasted labor hours for the reviewer. The second is
that the minutae of the coding process is irrelevant; the final product
and total hours spent is. Thus, an employer could learn just as much
about the recruit simply by reading about the project on the recruit's
resume and reading the source code of the final project. The third is
that watching a coder's screen will tell you nothing about the skills in
short supply among coders- social talents. Those are so important, I have
been at interviews where my programming skill was never discussed...the
interviewers just wanted to make sure they liked me enough to talk to me
every day. Finally, employers have their own internal methodologies which
will be different from how a coder works, and that learning curve will
exist universally.

I'm still using 3ivx, which as I understand it, just requires an MPEG-4
decoder to play. I did not buy 3ivx software, and do not even own
QuickTime Pro... (I use a few older machines, and H.264 is a bit much
for them.)

Oh, and do I have to BUY 3ivx to use it with QTPro?

Perhaps for fiction, but it might be ok for technical books. The live
feedback you get while writing would probably be quite helpful.
People already post early versions of technical books on the web.
This takes it a step further.

If you are a small startup with only enough VC funding to hire one or
two developers, then your choice of developers is absolutely critical
to the success of the startup. It will be worth your while to know
what you are getting -- even it means observing people code for weeks.

Hello Doctor, I am working on how to produce effective educational
communications. From what I gather, it would be a better idea to ease
the learning process, ie, by making it more interesting, rather than
motivate the students to continue studying for their exams. Since
studying is an effort to learn, and, exams are just a test to analyse
how much have they retained. If acquiring knowledge is made easy, and
interesting, exams would not be a problem at all. However to motivate
students to study for their exams would involve finding the right
carrot to dangle, so they be persuaded to put in the required amount
of effort. If you could provide some tips as to what the students
might consider as motivation, I'll be happy to assist in whatever way
I could.

Sincerely,

adithya ghare

I think this is sort of like TV: you can use VNCCasts for all sorts of
things, but some make more compelling viewing than others.

Perhaps watching someone write a book is not as interesting as I
thought it would be. But at the very least, you would get some idea
of how much work is involved and what a daily routine might look like
for writing a book -- at least for that author. It's also a way for
the writer to promote the book before it is even finished.

BTW, if you are a university student trying to impress potential
employers over a long period of time before graduating, would you not
want to work live?

And wouldn't companies have an incentive to watch these broadcasts to
identify talented people? For example, software companies would

2006-03-27 Thread Deirdre Straughan

This reminds me of an old George Carlin line about how everybody should have an audience seated on the other side of their desk saying, "Hey, he's good!"However, in real life I can't think of anything more off-putting to intellectual/creative work than knowing people are watching. It's been a while since I wrote a book of any kind, but most of the process, as Stephanie says, isn't all that interesting to watch, and a lot of it doesn't take place on the screen. And, for many of us, our creative/intellectual work has value (to ourselves or those who hire us) which would be eroded by it's being broadcast to the world before completion.
It's true that some processes might be interesting and educational to watch, but not as live feeds - probably heavy editing would be needed.-- best regards,Deirdré Straughan

Some advantages for the person broadcasting:

* constant feedback/discussion on what he/she is doing, which might be helpful;
perhaps a task could be done an order of magnitude more quickly and
with better results

* motivation to be more productive -- after all, people are watching

* a way to demonstrate your skills to potential employers and land
that highly desirable job;
this is an ongoing sort of interview that may span weeks and involve multiple
potential employers that you don't know about; in fact, instead of
you applying for a job,
companies will watch you and contact you if they are interested

* a way to find a soul mate -- this is a more intellectual form of
computer dating

* you will feel good about contributing to a deeper understanding of
the human condition;
psychologists will love to study you

* you will feel better about yourself when people find you important
enough to have discussions about you while you work

I certainly agree there: studying usability would definitely be one of
the applications.

I have had similar requests (because that's my job-- not novels, which
i write in my downtime, but books, which is why I'm awake at nearly 1
AM right now). Writing doesn't make very good video, though. The
majority of my screen is either me flipping between email, IM, MS
Word, iMovie, and Mozilla, or hunkered down in MS Word, or doing
screen shots of iMovie or QuickTime. From an outside-the-screen
perspective, I haven't moved anything but my hands in the last 3
hours, except to pick up a cup of coffee, so video of me writing is
largely of a bleary-eyed woman with bad posture, staring at a computer
screen. Hollywood is beating down my door, really.

Most of my time is productive, but that's only if you acknowledge the
procrastination as being productive. For instance, today I cleaned out
a fish tank and set up another tank in my office. And vacuumed. These
activities have nothing to do with the book, but if I didn't do them,
I'd go crazy. I'm already crazy, but even moreso. They are also not
writer's block, per se-- I *can* write, I just don't want to at that
moment.

Rewriting is a phase I enter into AFTER the big heavy first draft work
is done. For me, it's easier than the first draft, but I tend to
produce fairly good initial drafts. Other writers are very different
in this regard. My first draft of fiction varies widely-- one novel
may be terrible, while another may be almost revisable.

I keep track of non-fiction using notes on my computer, scattered
around the computer, in my email inbox, and my printed outline. For
the fiction notes, I have a tracking database in the software I use to
write novels, which keeps a database of characters and places and
outlines for me and such-- very handy stuff. Every writer is different
in this, though. I participate in NaNoWriMo each year-- that at least
makes good video, since we tend to get together in groups and write in
cafes, where there's more human interaction.

And every novel is different, too-- each novel teaches you how to
write a novel. sadly, it only teaches you how to write *that* novel,
so when you go to write another one, you are back to square one.

Personally, I find other art media, like drawing/cartooning, crafts,
sculpture, etc., to be much more visualy interesting.

> I see this partly as an experiment in learning about human nature. I

Yes, but what's the advantage to the person broadcasting?

You can't put a ruler to your screen and get a reliable number since
screens run at different resolutions. Sizes on the screen are measured in
pixels and the usual videoblog is 320 by 240 pixels.

Hi,

The broadcasts would be selective. You would not broadcast everything
you do, but rather, only those things that are not private and might
interest other people.

For example, if I want to learn about technologies behind internet
chat, I might initiate a broadcast with a title such as "My live
websurfing/googling for internet chat technologies (tips welcome)."
People interested in chat might then watch my live broadcast.
(Perhaps they get notifications automatically whenever a broadcast is
about to start on a topic that interests them.)

At this point, they will watch me trying to learn about internet chat
technologies. They might learn a few things from this and might even
give me tips on where to look. In fact, a discussion might start
among viewers about what I am doing. It would be interesting to see
what people have to say about my websurfing/googling.

Also, I think I would be more productive if people are watching me do
things and giving me constant feedback.

Some people might find this interesting. Perhaps they do something
similar. Perhaps they might give you a few tips. It's interesting to
see how people use their computers.

In any case, see the sample feeds I have added to vnccasts.com for
some ideas on what people might broadcast.

One area with a lot of potential is to reveal how creative people
work. How exactly does a novelist spend his time? Is most of it
productive? Or does writer's block dominate? Perhaps much time is
spent on rewriting? How does a novelist keep track of things exactly?

I see this partly as an experiment in learning about human nature. I
want to know how other people think. I want to get into their heads.

Re: [videoblogging] Broadcast your computer usage live on the net.

2006-03-27 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Well, I wouldn't, primarily because what I type on my computer doesn't
always belong to me, and broadcasting it would be a huge problem. Any
potential employers, I am sure, would be *horrified* to see me
broadcasting stuff live-- if I do it for a current employer or client,
who's to say I won't do it when working for them? [Caveat: I have
actually screencast a workday, including stuff i was working on, but
it's stuff for the book, and you couldn't read the text much anyway--
it was no more than a teaser.]

And even the stuff that isn't for a client is often private. I mean, I
don't really want the whole world reading my email, you know? Or
seeing my passwords, which I have been known to type into a clear-text
box without even realizing it.

Also, my computer usage, I have been told, is extremely annoying to
watch. When I surf the web, for instance, I am constantly highlighting
text while i read it, then de-highlighting, scrolling in ways that
people find nauseating, etc.

I can see it being useful for corporations wanting to spy on
employees, but not as a public broadcast option. It would be useful
for people studying usability. It would be useful for teenagers as a
novelty entertainment thing. It would be useful during a seminar or
class or other staged event. But daily nonstop broadcasting, like a
webcam? Eh not for me, I think.
