Nah, it's not so much whether it's the camedra or the software to blame. I just
have no desire to add more steps to the process.

True, but I wanted to see how long I could go with my videos before they became
such whereas people couldn't fit them on their phones.

Which is why I want add iPhone versions (Not just the iPod as that's only half
the screen size of the iPhone) & Flash versions for streaming & for those
phones which can play Flash.

This is ON TOP OF the iPod versions which I've been posting all along.

Agreed - the archive part is important, and lacking. Still problems
with search, too. There have been some experimental "search audio
within the video" search engines, but nothing mainstream yet. Right
now, most video search is confined to descriptive text surroundind the
video - not the actual narrative or script of the video itself.

Lots of work done, lots of work still to do!

Hey Pat
I understand your point about 3gp and how you believe it will expand your
audience... but a 40min video is pretty daring if you think people will
watch it to the end on their phones. And I actually think you are
entertaining! Heck, my own mother wouldn't watch 40min of me-- and she's my
mom!!!:)

Personally, pretty much the only long form video I watch on my iphone comes
from Cult Of UHF:

And that's only when I'm stuck at an airport or something like that.

Obviously, you can do what you want. But when you talk about trying to
extend your reach and your audience, 3gp won't do that all by itself.

Hi everyone:

Yeah Bill. Sorry 'bout that. Forgot that phones can't handle long URLs. I'll
try using TinyURL in the actual text links in the blog posts as that's the
service I use when posting links to websites in my Twitter posts, but since the
blog itself isn't phone-friendly (I don't think Blogger is), I'll have to find
SOME way of using TinyURL to shorten an RSS Feed.

Either that or people will just simply have to download to their computers and
then transfer to their phones.

Pat - I tried Episode 8 on my iPhone. I converted the long URL to a short one
using Bitly so it came out as http://bit.ly/ZX7qU. Much easier to work with.

The picture (on my iPhone) was small - maybe 120px X 100 giver or take. As you
know the audio is out of sync but you could hear it and see the video.

You might take a look at using Blip.tv to host and deliver your videos. They
encode in multiple formats including flv and m4v and the price is more than
reasonable -either free or under $100 for pro service.

Good luck with your project.

[videoblogging] Example of how online video has evolved

2009-03-05 Thread Jay dedman
Here's an awesome example of online video being used well:
http://www.opencongress.org/people/show/400060_eric_cantor
Now I can follow my congressman (Eric Cantor)and watch videos
where he's spoken about issues. I can look through his archives as
well. Obviously, I could also grab and mashup his speeches as well.
This is all part of the Transparency (aka good government) movement
happening in DC.

So I feel that all the technology is here. What we're doing now is
figuring out how to get the info we want...and how to present it in a
useful way. I also think that it's gong to take 5 more years before we
realize the power of the "video archive".

Agreed.
I think for a brief moment this group may have been a central place
for a lot of online video discussions, but now it's common in many
other places. There's still a good range of experience and passion
here though. Always an interesting perspective.

Many are now putting into action all the ideas we dreamed about. David
Howell just landed a new gig at CBC. Andy Carvin's doing his thing at
NPR. Chuck Olsen is helping pioneer over at the Uptake. The list goes
on. Who needs to talk when you're doing?

Many of us are still pushing for sane copyright(left) and open

2. Disregard of independent content producers by established media and

2009-03-05 Thread Pat Cook

Episode 010 -
http://blip.tv/file/get/Asmyw8losswt3gp-Episode010SimpleMealsForBariatricDummiesPartThreeBRE244.3gp

These videos are all encoded in H.264 as the video codec at a bitrate of 128K &
a screen resolution of 176 x 144 with 96K MP3 (??) for audio.

All I need to know is whether or not they can be viewed with a phone or other
portable device. Any other specific details you choose to give will just simply
help others out.

I am aware of the video issues with Episodes 8 & 9 as well as the audio quirks
in Episode 10 however I think I've managed to find a way to skin BOTH "wabbits"
(As Elmer Fudd would probably say :D ). Instead of using Windows Media Encoder
(As I was in Episodes 8 & 9 and all other episodes throughout my video
podcasting history), I'm now using the new Adobe Flash Encoder (As I did in
Episode 10). Though, in order to correct the quirks in the audio, I will be
using the LOW bandwidth settings (That said, I may try to toggle with the
screen resolution setting if I can since video was never an issue with Episode
10).

So anyway, if you guys could check those videos out on your hardware devices
and reply in this thread with any feedback you have, it'd be MUCH appreciated.
I hope to have all three episodes posted COMPLETE WITH RETRO-DATES since they
were recorded on different dates BY TOMORROW if all goes well.

MANY thanks in advance.

Well, isn't this a "good thing"?

What's once fringe yet legitimately useful would naturally move
towards the center.

I remember writing my own RSS xml feed for media enclosures during the
advent of podcasting. Now folks don't even need to know what a
audio/video podcast is to start one. Same dilemma of us driving cars,
but not understanding every part that goes into making it. It's all
blackboxed now.

Even though I only discovered this mailing list late into the game, I
see this group as having more signal than noise. That filter is
priceless.

So much discussion of these things has happened in disposable form,

Re: [videoblogging] 246 messages in February

2009-03-05 Thread Jeffrey Taylor
My take on the "why", in addition to what Rupert already said:

1. We're dispersing as our interests go into different directions, and the
community seems loathe to create traditions and constants. With the
exception of Vlog Europe, which is small, events like Vloggercon,
Pixelodeon, the Vloggies/Winnies have lasted two years at the most.

I see many things going local, with well-developed "crowds" developing in
LA, SF, NY, DC, London, Amsterdam and Clermont-Ferrand, France, among
others. I think there's a lot of good in all this online conversation
fostering real-life activity, but the global aspect of this conversation
suffers as a result.

2. YouTube and the lack of integration of YouTube's users into this list
(for good or ill).

3. The door is cracked for people to take a stand for certain principles in
this medium, but it certainly isn't as open as it was 3-5 years ago. I give
tough love, not a scolding, when I say we all could do a better job
organizing to stand up for what we believe in this space and providing
opportunity for producers and artists that we believe in, and that perhaps
some of these convictions are just not important enough to enough people.

4. The surge of this list was concurrent with the Web 2.0 surge, and teh
economy has taken it's toll on both. I think there's many, many of us doing
our best to make ends meet in this environment.

[videoblogging] Archive of Videoblog.tv from 2003 onwards

2009-03-05 Thread Rupert
I found the Buzzmachine post via the Wayback machine archive of
Videoblog.tv - now dead.
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.videoblog.tv

And I found that because I was browsing the first month of the group,
and there was a message by Perry Lawrence saying that he'd been
playing around with videoblogs for a couple of years - actually since
early 2003 - and had also been doing mobile videoblogging using his
Nokia.

[videoblogging] Buzzmachine post about vlogs from Dec 31st 2002

2009-03-05 Thread Rupert
From the future to the past...

This is a post Jeff Jarvis wrote about vlogs on December 31, 2002 - a
full year and a half before the group was created.

The text is below. You'll have to visit the post to click the many
links he provides.
It's at:
http://www.buzzmachine.com/archives/2002_12.html#000466

Vlogs: The state of the art
: I've spent my holiday vacation playing with vlogs -- video weblogs
-- to learn what this can do for work (I imagine high-school kids
giving sports reports) and for pleasure (that is, this blog). The
lessons come here and there and so as vacation ends, I'm pulling
together the lessons and links in this post.

I also just put up two new vlogs (with scripts below, where you can
also leave comments... be kind) -- one about year-end media cliches
and one about the fading fast-food culture. You can get to both, and
my three maiden video voyages as well -- at www.screenblast.com/
buzzmachine.

Some of the lessons:

: Vlogs are about somebody saying something. That's why the ability
to work off a script and read off a teleprompter in Serious Magic's
software is critical enabling technology. This isn't just about
staring at a camera and trying to think of something to say; it's not
about the live camboys and camgirls (to answer Jason Kottke); it's
about at least trying to say something. Vlogs are to cams as blogs
are to web pages and forums: They are produced, edited, throught-
through; they have a point.

: There are two reasons why something should be on video instead of
in print: the need for (1) graphics and illustration or (2)
expression and inflection. Here, too, Serious Magic helps because it
allows very easy click-and-drop insertion of graphics tied to your
words (rather than to a clock).

: I'm still trying to find the right voice for these things. I know
that right now, they're either embarrassing (my sacrifice for my art)
or merely imitations of bad TV. But I'm starting to feel comfortable
with the form. And I'll repeat what I said when I started this:
Vlogging lets us online go up against our true competitors -- not
news organizations and reporters but commentators, especially on TV
(on Sunday morning, on Fox, on 60 Minutes). Bloggers compete with
columnists; vloggers compete with pundits.
But that's just one voice that will work. Put these tools in the
hands of young people with something new to say and a new way to say
it and I know we will be wowed.

: Bandwidth is the enemy, but the enemy will be vanquished. When
Glenn Reynolds linked to my vlogs, the crush of simultaneous users
brought my server down. I solved that, for now, by using Sony's
Screenblast. But I am confident that bandwidth will improve on the
viewer's side of the pipe and get much cheaper on the server's side.

My links re vlogging so far:
: Introducing vlogging.
: How to vlog.
: To watch my vlogs go to my "showcase" at www.screenblast.com/
buzzmachine.
: The drumbeat for Lileks TV.

Others' links on vlogging:
: Glenn Reynolds includes multimedia blogging in his look at the year
online.
: Justin Katz responds to my vlog with a vlog of his own raising
questions about the ease and interactivity of the form. (My response.)
: Alex Knapp also doubts. (My response.)
: David Galbraith defends the future of vlogs and foresees armies of
bloggerazzi.
: Howard Sherman says the young will be the ones to innovate here.
: Henry Copeland sees convergence in vlogging and Gawker.
: A Dutch filmmaker's experiment in vlogging (more artsy, less
scripted).
: An MIT Media Lab researcher, Aisling Kelliher, also experiments
with video weblogging here.
: Macromedia folks videoed a recent conference here.
: The Shifted Librarian wants the text in RSS. Well, I'm halfway
there: putting text up; RSS next.
: He hates the idea (because it ruins the off-the-cuff casualness of
blogs) and so does he.
: Finally, I'm proud of this one: When I started this blog, the first
snarky anti-me post online came from Follow Me Here. And now he's
snarking at vlogging. I must be onto something.

: UPDATE: I'll try to keep this up-to-date with further links...
: Henry Copeland has a kind review of three of the vlogs.
: More kind words from Sean Kirby.

[videoblogging] 246 messages in February

2009-03-05 Thread Rupert
I've just looked at the number of messages being produced by the group.
Last month - 246 - was the lowest number of messages since the first
month of the group in June 2004.
Conversation peaked a year later in June 2005 with 2974 messages (100
per day).
Yet you'd imagine that there are more people posting web video than
ever before - on Facebook and YouTube mostly.

I'm less interested in what this means for the group - we're still
producing 8 or 9 messages a day, and people are using Twitter too -
and more in what this says about web video and how people perceive it.

Is it so commonplace now that it's not worth talking about or getting
excited about in a formal setting like a group? Is it so easy to
make and upload videos that people don't need to ask for help? Are
the corporate sharing sites so easy and dominating that people don't
even think about controlling their own content and presentation of
it? Is this a clear enough sign that the future is huge corporate
superchannels with independent content again shut out?

[videoblogging] Re: Transparent Video Player

2009-03-05 Thread Steve Watkins
Well the example you linked to had several different features, based on
different technology.

If you just want to play a normal video over the top of your page, that could
probably be achieved with a bit of wordpress template modification & an
understanding of html layers.

The 'person standing over the top of the website' stuff relies on a feature
that flash has had for a very long time - the ability to play videos with
transparent backgrounds. To do this you need to get several steps right. First
you have to make your source video so that it doesnt have a background,
typically by using green screen or other technique to remove the background,
then save the video in a format that supports alpha. Then you have to encode
that into .flv format with the right options ticked to preserve the alpha
channel. Then you need to play that video back on the web using a suitable
flash video player.

I do not know if there are 3rd party programs which support alpha-channel flv
video encoding, I tried some months ago and ended up having to use flash
itself, not a cheap option. But I may be missing something.

Cheers

[videoblogging] Re: Would Like Files Checked For Functionality

2009-03-05 Thread Bill Vick
Pat - I tried Episode 8 on my iPhone. I converted the long URL to a short one
using Bitly so it came out as http://bit.ly/ZX7qU. Much easier to work with.

The picture (on my iPhone) was small - maybe 120px X 100 giver or take. As you
know the audio is out of sync but you could hear it and see the video.

You might take a look at using Blip.tv to host and deliver your videos. They
encode in multiple formats including flv and m4v and the price is more than
reasonable -either free or under $100 for pro service.

Good luck with your project.

Hi everyone:

Before I go widely promoting these to the whole weight loss world, I'd like to
see if you folks can see if these files work in your phone or other portable

Episode 09 -

Episode 010 -
http://blip.tv/file/get/Asmyw8losswt3gp-Episode010SimpleMealsForBariatricDummiesPartThreeBRE244.3gp

These videos are all encoded in H.264 as the video codec at a bitrate of 128K &
a screen resolution of 176 x 144 with 96K MP3 (??) for audio.

All I need to know is whether or not they can be viewed with a phone or other
portable device. Any other specific details you choose to give will just
simply help others out.

Cheers

Hello -- This is my email autoresponder speaking. I'm traveling in some
not-very-connected parts of Africa through March 16. I will be checking email
and voicemail as often as circumstances permit, but responses will be much
slower.

If you need a fast response and you're contacting me about Boing Boing Video
programming, please contact Derek Bledsoe (derekboingbo...@yahoo.com) and Jolon
Bankey (jolo...@jolon.com).

If your inquiry involves Boing Boing blog business, please contact David
Pescovitz (da...@pesco.net).

Blog post content pitches are always preferred via our web-based form, and I
won't be blogging much on the road, other than what's on the road.

If you need to reach my agent about a speaking engagement, TV or something like
that, you'd want George Ruiz (gr...@icmtalent.com) or Nick Khan
(nk...@icmtalent.com).

And if this is personal, thank you for your message, and thank you for your
patience. I wish you well from the road.
