The reason it's designed that way is that you can only have one RSS

Re: [videoblogging] Jonas Mekas

2008-05-01 Thread Brian Gonzalez
I just finished giving a presentation on Jonas in one of my classes at SVA.
he's been a personal hero of mine for a while and and joy to meet at each
screening he's been having lately at Anthology.

about three weeks ago I sat through his five hour epic *As I Was Moving
Ahead I Occasionally Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty* with a 30min intermission
with free food and beer provided by whole foods. Jonas was there and I
squealed cause I happened to be next to him and opened his beer for him! It
was the most remarkable film I've ever seen and I've proclaimed that if I
had the choice, it would be the last film I see before I die.

for those of you in NYC, be sure to check out the program at Anthology in
the coming weeks, there's a lot to see that will blow your minds and hearts
away.

 ,
2 hours and 30 minutes, color, sound.
HE STANDS IN A DESERT... is a continuation of my film diaries. The
 footage
covers the period from 1969 to 1984. During the same period I shot much
more footage than what you see in HE STANDS ... I am including in this
film only the most impersonal footage. Originally, I was planning to call
 this film Anthropological Sketches.

It consists of scenes, sketches of people, activities, happenings, events
outside — or almost outside — of my life which I am observing from a
 slight
 distance. There are some sketches
that are from my personal life, I included them for the balance, to warm
 up
the impersonal material. There will be two more films from the same
 period:
one will include all my personal material (home, friends), the other all
my abstract material. I struggled for a long time trying to combine all
these three kinds of different footage into one film, but I had to give
 up.
I couldn't do it. So this is the first film in the trilogy.

Re: [videoblogging] re: LED lights

2008-02-13 Thread Brian Gonzalez
I LOVE LEDs. just make sure you get some CTO to compensate for the
color temp that tends to be cold, in which case, they're great to
balance with daylight. but it's soft and energy saving and usually
comes with a dimmer. aside from the on-board panels, DP Joaquín
Baca-Asay (DP of Thumbsucker) swears by 1x1 ft LED panels for soft
natural light.

good luck.

[videoblogging] VLOGGING POLITICS

2007-12-10 Thread Brian Gonzalez
hey everyone!

so I'm writing this paper for my class *Civilization and its

the racial incident with Loren Feldman back in August, Michael Verdi being

facebook, etc.
so I wanted to get a few words about any of those incidents or others
from you guys for my paper, addressing your goals and motives with online
video, where you think it's heading and where you think it should be
heading, what you would change about it, what kind of culture is this wave
of collective art cultivating (good and bad), what your ideas are on
public perception vs creation on account of online media, all in addition to

[videoblogging] Re: VLOGGING POLITICS

2007-12-10 Thread Brian Gonzalez
this is the passage that ignited this paper:

excerpt from Erich Fromm's *The Sane Society*:
Man, in order to feel at home in the world, must grasp it not only with his
head, but with all his senses, his eyes, his ears, with all his body. He
must act out with his body what he thinks out with his brain. Body and mind
cannot be separated in this, or in any other aspect. If man expresses his
grasp of the world by his senses he creates art and ritual, song, dance,
drama, painting, sculpture.
...For lack of a better word, I shall use the term collective art, meaning
*to respond to the world with our senses in a meaningful, skilled,
productive, active, shared way*. In this description, the * shared* is
important, and differentiates the concept of collective art and that of
art in the modern sense. The latter is individualistic, both in its
production and in its consumption. Collective art is shared; it permits man
to feel one with others in a meaningful, rich, productive way. It is not an
individual leisure time occupation, added to life, it is an integral part
of life. It corresponds to a basic human need, and if this need is not
fulfilled, man remains as insecure and anxious as if the need for a
meaningful thought picture of the world were unrealized. in order to grow
out of the receptive into the productive orientation, he must relate himself
to the world artistically, and not only philosophically or scientifically.
If a culture does not offer such a realization, the average person does
notedevelop beyond his receptive or marketing orientation.

thanks for your time guys!

[videoblogging] friend of FOUR EYED MONSTERS needs your help!!!

2007-11-28 Thread Brian Gonzalez
 hello friends!

alfra and i need extras for our music video!

a little about the project:

its a short film/music video set in the 30's/40's. the scene we are
shooting takes place in a cabaret club, dimly lit and smoky. the
projected date of the shoot is saturday night, december 1st, starting
at around 4:30pm.

there are requirements. for men, we need suits and preferrably with a
fedora or trilby or the likes. if you do not have one, that is fine.
for women, we need dresses, preferrably within the era, but anything
timeless is just fine. the hair dressing will be much more important.
all extras will have to provide their own hair dressing, which isn't
much, and we can give you ideas of styles. we will have someone to do
the finishing touchs. more detailed information will be provided when
your roles are confirmed.

also, you must live in the new york city area.

we will be providing food and refreshments. basically, this is a dress
up/costume party for a film shoot, so ya'll can hang out and be in the
movie and make merriment (just don't get too wasted of course! i need
people to be able to stand...)

so if you are free and interested, that would be great! this will be
so much fun!

please let us know if you are interested at your earliest convenience.

serious inquiries only please.

*also, i need a dp, an ad, and any pa's for that night. feel free to
send this off.*

music video/short film about a cabaret singer lost in fame, alienation
and insecurities. prudence teacup sells her soul to the devil for
fame, and the devil turns out to be herself. there's an angel
involved too. we've shot half of the film already in the catskills
and it came out great. for this scene, a dark smoky cabaret club with
an audience. it is all the shots just before she performs, which in
the end you don't get to see, because the story is not about that. i
am building a set in my loft. track and dolly shots, hand held,
sticks, all on dvx100a. this club scene is ultimately going to be b/w
in post.

saturday night, starting at 4pm for cast, earlier for crew. the set
should be all set with lighting and everything by then.

if anyone is interested, please contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
to expediate the process, call me at 347.683.9878

sorry, its low budget, so we have no money to pay, but you will get
fed, credit, and copy. and all in all, it'll be fun with many
beautiful people here.

just be weary of if/when you're burning a dvd - I spent 2 days trying to
figure out using multiple formats (of course through FCP) having all of the
footage be TV safe with HD 1080p -in dvd studio pro, I had have it all
display as 4:3 but render my HD footage with a wireframe that fit TVsafe and
then display it as 16:9 letterbox in dvd studio pro.

good luck.

Ok, so I think I solved it.

It turns out that Sony HDV outputs 1440x1080 and then stretches it to
 1920.

For some reason, iMovie has always stretched it to the right
 proportions when exporting full resolution.

But it's not now, which is weird.

My workaround is to take this smooshed full res file that makes me
look skinny and open it in quicktime and go into

Window --- show movie properties --- click on the video track
 and change 1440 to 1920.

This appears to work and looks like my other videos done like this.

I should also mention that I'm working in hd native 16x9.

Normally when I output a full res vid, the movie stays 16x9, but for
some reason it's smooshing it into 4x3 so the image is all skinny.

Has anyone else had this problem and have a solution I can try? I've

They need to be short, because I'm editing a bunch of them together into a
3-minute trailer. I'm thinking 5-10 seconds each. I'd like to get about 20
of them and tie them all together.

Bonus points if they are talking about vlogging in the clip.

I'd be very grateful for any links you could come up with.

 Thanks.

(P.S. For this project we're defining personal vlogger as someone who
talks to the camera or uses voice-over to narrate personal accounts,
although generally I think that term includes many more styles.)
