[videoblogging] Podcast Copyrights

2006-04-04 Thread Dog-matic
I've set up a blog for the purposes of understanding the issues of
copyrights as they pertain to podcasting. It is my hope that this will be
utilized as a repository of information and a forum for discussion by the
legal community as well as the podcast community. The various publishing,
digitial distribution, licensing and government agencies may very well find
it a useful place to research and dialogue.

I will also be making it available to the 2000+ members of the yahoo
podcasters group as well as the video bloggers group, and other related
groups.

http://podcastcopyrights.wordpress.com/

Please log in and add to the links, categories, articles, discussion. Let me
know if there's anything I can do to help you understand how to use this
blog.

I'm not trying to be harsh. I've looked at the freevlog stuff, in fact that's where I started. And this group is where I'd be looking for the answers, but no one seems to be able to solve this problem, neither the blip.tv people, the freevlog people, etc. I just want to know what format people are using that works for as many people as possible.

thanks

I understand your frustration, but there are no easy answers here.
Flash is the closest thing to a universal format, but many higher
end producers have issues with its quality, etc (I am definitely not
one of these higher end producers).

Next best thing is probably to produce alternate versions for mac
(mov) and pc (wmv) if streaming is what you're after. There are
some standard settings for both that are very stable on each
respective platform.

For info on the standard settings, try searching the archives in

So once you use Comressor to export the iPod 320x240, the you re-save it to .mov? Because the iPod settings don't allow options

I really just need to compress to a format that everyone on every platform in every browser can see. Can I please get some recommendations, with as much detail as possible? All of my shows are done on Sony 150 and 250s, edited in Final Cut, NTSC, 29.97 frames per second at 48k. I just want them viewable online without having to do so much tech support for the viewers.

Re: [videoblogging] making DVDs on Mac OS X

2006-02-21 Thread Dog-matic
Title: Re: [videoblogging] making DVDs on Mac OS X

I built the video_TS and audio_TS folders in DVD Studio Pro, then went into FFMPEG and selected Tools, IMG and made a Disk Image. Then I mounted the image. Then I opened DVD Player and the Video_TS folder and nothing happens. I get a grey screen. It won't let me advance to another chapter, although I put 6 chapter markers in the project.

If I open individual .VOB files in the Finder, the first one IS this grey box, the next ones are the actual video. Maybe DVD Studio Pro builds this file and DVD Player thinks it's a real video but it's not?

Now what?

-d

On 2/20/06 4:30 PM, Richard BF [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Darren,

Welcome to the group!

I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to burn DVDs that
will play in standard, non computer players from the following
applications and formats:

You didn't say what your problem was. Are there any error messages
coming out of these applications?

The main problem with burning DVDs and having them work on standard
players, is the burn speed. Fast burns don't always work too well on
standard players, so always pick the slowest burn speed.

Although DVD Studio Pro allows you to set the burn speed, then build
and burn, I've found it to be generally unreliable. I prefer to do it
this way:

1. Build the DVD in DVD Studio Pro, test with the simulate function,
then use the build function to save it as a directory containing
VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories. Don't burn in DVD Studio Pro,
build the directory structure only.

2. Use FFMPEGX's IMG function to convert the directory into a DVD
image file. I've found FFMPEG to be more stable that DVD Studio Pro,
and there's way more users testing it. You can find the IMG function
inside the Tools tab in FFMPEGX.

3. Use Mac OS X Disk Utility to mount the new image as a disk.

4. Run Apple's DVD Player, open the mounted disk and test it. It is
important to do this step, as you're guaranteeing that the image has
been built correctly. If everything works as expected, then
everything up to this point has worked fine, and you can move on to
the burn.

5. Use Mac OS X Disk Utility to burn the DVD. Make sure you click on
the blue arrow to expand the advanced options, and select the slowest
burn speed. Then burn the DVD.

6. Check the resulting DVD in a standard player. If it doesn't work,
then (depending on why it doesn't work) chances are its still burning
too fast, or you need to try a different DVD format (DVD-R, DVD+R, DL
etc).

Again it is important to do step 4, which will determine whether the
problem is with the DVD file structure or the burn process.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Richard

Ok, can I get some IE testers? I put the popup.php on my site, made a link in the latest video blog post (PJJ-TV #3) with the instructions below:

Alternately, if you click on the link, it will start downloading the file, but it might not tell you that's what it's doing. If you get the file on your hard drive, you can view it with the Quicktime Stand Alone Player for Windows.

if your file is bigger than 10 megs you have to use the local application to
upload. it also allows you to configure a lot of information and doesn't
time out as quickly as the web app.

[videoblogging] Josh's popup script doesn't show link?

2006-02-05 Thread Dog-matic
Title: Josh's popup script doesn't show link?

why is it that when I put this code into the blip.tv HTML editor and save it, that

it keeps dissappearing? I go in to look at it and the code is gone
it's not showing up as a link when the mouse hovers over it?

here's the code, from the Josh popup maker:

If you embed the video in HTML then this problem goes away and any

An easy way to do this is to use the popup window method that I created:

The reasons for doing this are explained here:
 http://www.unmediated.org/archives/2005/10/easily_create_p.php

This handles all browser incompatibilities with encountered by direct

Yes, .movs can have all sorts of formats inside them.

The drawbacks of using .mp4 on your blog, so far as I can tell, is
simply that some computers out there (at leas in the windows side of
things) still get confused with how to deal with it. I have the
latest iTunes on my PCs and yet each still handles mp4s differently
... and painfully in at least one case. This problem is however
 getting better all the time.

At the moment my preference is to provide a .mov that is encoded for
the iPod. All of my computers see .mov and know what to do with it.
QuickTime. It's easy to embed in html and its compatible with the
ipod. Seems to do it all. :-)

thanks guys. I just got into this group so I missed it. I appreciate the help. My friend installed Quicktime for Windows which forces you to use iTunes, and he says he views the file fine now. But I'm going to make this work from my site as well. You may want to check out the new video I just posted:

http://portlandjazzjams.libsyn.com/

Sat, 4 February 2006
PJJ-TV #3 Chris Mosley Trio
Note: the latest version of Quicktime and iTunes 6.02 is required for viewing on Windows IE machines.

Hey guys, check out Chris Mosely. The second tune on this set is SO COOL. He sounds quite Scofieldian. And he's not even 21! Enjoy!

Show Notes: 28 minutes iPod Video (167MB) Chris Mosley is a young guitarist that spent some time at Berklee School of Music and is now here in Portland, Oregon. He brought in his trio for our first taped episode of PJJ-TV while we were still in the studio class. It came out as #3 on the broadcast schedule though. The show consists of a few minutes of interesting interview with Chris and myself, Darren Littlejohn as host. This is followed by several tunes with the trio, consisting of Chris, Drew Shoals on drums and Damian Erskine on bass.

Note: the latest version of Quicktime and iTunes 6.02 is required for viewing on Windows IE machines.

The show will also be available for streaming at the PJJ-TV Video blog:

Not wishing to preempt a reply from Josh, but you might like to look at:

It says:

that's what the blip.tv html editor does. it also periodically deletes the code, like from the popup maker. I had added a line to the post, then saved it, and when I went back the whole popup link was gone. I don't know what the x is doing in there either. I'm not getting any responses from the blip.tv support email.

Ok, can I get some IE testers? I put the popup.php on my site, made a link in the latest video blog post (PJJ-TV #3) with the instructions below:

You will see a link that says, PC Users: click that link because it enables streaming video on IE with the new iPod video format.

Alternately, if you click on the link, it will start downloading the file, but it might not tell you that's what it's doing. If you get the file on your hard drive, you can view it with the Quicktime Stand Alone Player for Windows.

I do prefer Firefox, but the problem with Quicktime in IE is well
documented and the solution is to properly embed QT filed in HTML,
otherwise IE does not respect the fast start settings in the QT
movie.

The easiest way to do this is to use the popup method that I created:
 http://joshkinberg.com/popupmaker

This will give you the code to copy-paste into your blog to create a
popup window with the movie embedded in HTML. The reasons for using
this are described in depth here:
