Re: [Videolib] multi disc DVD cases

2011-08-18 Thread CAPLAN Victoria F

Hi Beth,

We prefer to circulate in the case they arrive in, unless there is a
problem with it. Mostly we use single cases, but we do have some
multi-disk cases. We don't use security cases, so that is not an issue.

We have signs on all the book drops asking students not to put media items
in them. If they do put media items in the book-drop, we send them emails
asking them to avoid doing so in the future.

[Videolib] Rare & wonderful TV movies not on DVD and mostly not on VHS for a LONG time

2011-08-18 Thread Jessica Rosner
A lot of the discussion of VHS only titles made me think of many great TV
movies , long forgotten and some of which never even made VHS or did so in
the earliest years so most copies are long gone. The 50s is generally
referred to as "The Golden Age" of Television with many wonderful live
dramas, but many of us remember the glory years of the "Made for TV" movie
which I would date roughly 1970-78. Nearly all of them except BRIAN'S SONG
are unknown today. I remember all sorts of wonderful films including
DR.COOK'S GARDEN with Bing Crosby as a beloved, but homicidal small town
doctor. IN THIS HOUSE OF BREDE with Diane Rigg as a business woman who
decides to become a nun, 4 great films directed by the totally underrated
Lamont Johnson, MY SWEET CHARLIE, FEAR ON TRIAL, THE EXECUTION OF PRIVATE
SLOVIK and the shockingly forgotten THAT CERTAIN SUMMER which was really the
first "main stream" film to deal sympathetically and with homosexuality as
the main plot, KILL ME IF YOU CAN and THE GLASS HOUSE both with Alan Alda, A
WAR OF CHILDREN about Northern Ireland, TRIBES about a draftee and perhaps
the most wonderful of the lot LOVE AMONG THE RUINS with Laurence Olivier &
Katherine Hepburn. There ares so many more

Of these only THE GLASS HOUSE which Amazon carries and I find somewhat
suspicous it out on DVD and none has been in print on VHS for a long, long
time.

I am actually surprised companies have tried to acquire and release many of
these.

I don't think the film is in legal limbo, it is just that Lewis has no
intention of ever allowing it out. Ironically one truly great film which is
in legal limbo partly because of Jerry Lewis is HELLZAPOPPIN, Olson &
Johnon's slapstick existential masterpiece from 1942. Lewis bought the
rights to the show for live tour and it has been unavailable in the US for
many decades but runs at least once a week in Paris.

All the recent discussion of videos on VHS but not on DVD kinda
blurred that the master list is broader than that and includes storied
films that never made it out on video in any form. Thus the Day the
Clown Cried and many others.

Hi All,

"Video" is the catch-all term I use to refer to the wide variety of
formats that include DVD, VHS, laser disc, etc., but what we know from
our students is that when they encounter the term "video" what they
think of is VHS tapes. What term do you use?

[Videolib] What do you call "video"?

2011-08-18 Thread Ball, James (jmb4aw)
Hi All,

"Video" is the catch-all term I use to refer to the wide variety of formats
that include DVD, VHS, laser disc, etc., but what we know from our students is
that when they encounter the term "video" what they think of is VHS tapes.
What term do you use?

Cheers,

Matt

2011-08-18 Thread Jessica Rosner
A couple of quick notes from a VERY quick look. A number of the titles
listed as having been out on VHS were either "grey" market, mostly pre GATT
European films, or flat out illegal copies (Porgy and Bess) or mind blowing.
Seriously some one has a copy of The Day The Clown Cried? I thought it would
be in a vault next the 6 hour version of GREED & LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. That
would not just be an illegal copy, but the mother of all rarities.

A few things I did catch. The following films are out on DVD, ABRAHAM
LINCOLN, THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE, DARK CITY and PHENIX CITY STORY (That
one is in WB box set only). One rarity never out on DVD is I HEARD THE OWL
CALL MY NAME.

I am sure there is a lot more. Sorry for not being able to add this myself
but I am just no good at those sorts of things.

We changed all of our DVDs over to locking cases to fit into our 3M

This is the first I have heard about this conference and have been doing
a bit of research.

Do many Non-theatrical film programming vendors attend?

Do librarians look for new film product here?

We love any opportunity we can to meet with librarians so very
interested in your feedback.

If it is not appropriate for us, we always have National Media Media
Market the next week!

Cheers,

[Videolib] multi disc DVD cases

2011-08-18 Thread Beth Traylor
Hello All,

In an effort to possibly save some space and recombine some sets - I am
investigating what
other libraries do with multi disc DVD sets.

What kinds of cases do you circulate them in?

Do you separate them into individual cases?

I have looked at a couple multi disc cases but they are either too wide
to fit in our security case or the inside tray breaks when we test it in
the bookdrop.

Thank you in advance - Any help would be appreciated

Re: [Videolib] vhs only list

2011-08-18 Thread Chris Markman
Hi Gary,

I've been working on some charts to go along with the list using my favorite
screen scraper. It's a mostly automated process so there are some errors at
the moment but I could see this being a very useful resource in years to
come — especially when the "in X years everything will be streaming" debate
crops up from time to time.

Here's a quick sample of what I have so far:

https://my.needlebase.com/actions/visualizer/V2Visualizer.do?domain=VHS-Only&query=Year+Distribution+Chart

The list is still missing many dates but the "hump" through the 40s and 50s
seems pretty clear.

https://my.needlebase.com/actions/visualizer/V2Visualizer.do?query=Top+Directors&domain=VHS-Only

I'm noticing some duplicate entries and other errors on that link but it'll
be easy to clean up later — if everyone could stick to the same citation
format while they're doing edits that will make this process much easier :)

Eventually I'll figure our a way to fill in the missing date and director
fields using the same site. Oh, and I should mention that if anyone wants to
export this data and take a look at their collection it's really easy to do
in Needlebase. Here's a link to an Excel friendly CSV file:
https://my.needlebase.com/actions/api/V2Visualizer.do?domain=VHS-Only&render=Excel&query=Title

Please err on the side of caution when you're using this data — work in
progress!

Re: [Videolib] vhs only list

2011-08-18 Thread Grant, Tyra
I've shared the wiki with three colleagues here---our music/dance/film/theater
bibliographer, our film and video cataloger and our video acquisitions
person---threee thumbs-up from them---four counting me!

I wonder---merely wondering:

Would there be any benefit to having a way to highlight new VHS-only additions,
either, for example, by yellow highlighting newbies or by separating them from
the rest of the list for a time? Would this help make sure they could be more
easily spotted, reviewed and vetted by more people without having to comb
through the entire list?

As I say, I don't know if this is such a good idea or not---I was wondering
though how many ways might this list be used? I would use it to determine
certain VHS titles for which we need to be extra protective.

It could be that some would be interested to browse for newly added titles,
either vhs-only or recently available in DVD.

Another question, how often does it happen that DVDs go out of availability?

We did this in 2010, primarily in order to help me with the process of deciding
on items to upgrade to DVD. Stats were for circs since 2004 when we switched
our ILS. The results were a bit surprising to me at first -- our highest
circulated item to that point was a a VHS copy of Annenberg's CHILDHOOD AND
ADOLESCENCE, which had circulated 103 times. But then I realized, unlike Deg's
situation, our stats *did* include both standard circs and reserve circs, and
that item had been used a ton for course reserve. Next highest were also VHS
-- AMERICAN TONGUES and a segment of THE STORY OF ENGLISH, again, frequent
reserve items.

The top DVDs were all feature films, topped by A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE
GODFATHER, PT. 2, and BLADE RUNNER.

So do you have more hope for the world now, Gary, with those top three?
Forrest Gump was 24th on our list. ;)

To answer Jennifer Foster's queries:

For us, we never check out a film as many times as there are students in a
class when there's a classroom screening. That's a fairly unusual way of
approaching at it, I think.

Also, for us, if the report shows 413 circs of a title, that would represent
circs of the ONE copy. IOW, if an item has worn out and needed to be replaced,
the new copy would be cataloged and barcoded separately, so the circ statistics
would start anew. So to get what you're talking about, we'd need to add
together circs for all formats and copies. For us, that would be the most
complicated with 12 Monkeys, which have owned in VHS, *laserdisc* and DVD
formats and which has "gone missing" a number of times.

And Jessica, Citizen Kane gets used a ton here still. It's one of the few
titles for which we own two copies.

made it a challenge to weed. So I use it for weeding, starting with VHS tapes
(generally donated or acquired en masse from other libraries to get us started
some 35+ years ago. Anything that had not circulated at all since we switched
to Horizon in 2000 was tossed (but then, we are not Berkeley either...). Now I
use these lists to see which VHS tapes are most likely to need replacing with
DVD if available.

Here's a couple of follow-up questions. My predecessor used to ask instructors
how many students were in their classes when sending a video over to show in a
class. Then she would check the video out that many times to reflect how many
students had watched it. Do others do that, or just count the number of
checkouts?

And how well do your DVDs and VHS tapes hold up? If something has checked out
413 times, how many times did the film have to be repurchased? How many
viewings would it stand up to? We have a DVD copy of Hamlet, for instance,
that is 5 years old and has circulated 26 times. It needs replacing because it
skips badly.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.

Impressive list. Hey never knock a Dirty Harry film though the original

2011-08-18 Thread Dorfman, Andrew
I'm fairly new to this list and have been "lurking" a bit until I could chime
in with something of value. 8 ½ is actually in our list of top 50 circulating
feature films. Our top 10 circulating titles include:

Scenes From a Marriage
Gallipoli
Magnum Force (really?)
The Deer Hunter
Goya's Ghosts
Like Water for Chocolate
The Godfather
Annie Hall
The Untouchables
Au Revoir les Enfants

Citizen Kane does make our top 50 if we only count single copies. Factoring in
multiple copies probably drops it into the top 70. Another interesting tidbit
is that after about 15 months on our shelves, The Hangover is firmly ensconced
in our top 20.

My collection doesn't even account for 1% of our holdings but before the rise
of streaming netflix and Hulu; my DVD and VHS checkouts accounted for 1 out of
every 5 checkouts from this building. You should have heard the laughter when
I asked for one fifth the purchasing budget based on that figure. We also were
getting about 5% of the purchasing budget.
Since then we've dropped to about 10% of the checkouts and the budget (when we
actually are allowed to spend) is down to 1% of the collection budget. The ROI
on media is outstanding but considering my situation I feel like Al Capone just
took a Louisville Slugger to the back of my head, oh well.

I ran the list out of curiosity... I have some ideas of what I would like to do
with some of the information. But noting strategic or planned yet.

I think it might make for an interesting study or presentation to address some
of the other points others have raised. Hundreds of circs for some titles is
something to take notice of.

It might also be interesting to compare top lists from multiple schools and
report on overlap, unique titles, etc. Tho overlap and duplication can be done
with OCLC's collection analysis tool (IF videos are in catalogs...)

Several years ago we ran numbers for another purposed and discovered that the
video collection in Fletcher Library accounted for amount equal to 25% of
unmediated circulation (that is, circulation that did not require assistance
from the circ desk, such as a reserve, or a renewal, etc) in that campus
library. Video loans are mediated tho, in that cases need to be unlocked. :(

At the time, video consumed about 5% of the acquisitions budget.

When I weeded the VHS collection last year (most of it moved to storage) we
discovered that only 3% of the VHS collection (@10,000 titles, exact numbers
not at my fingertips) never circulated. But studies of monographs in
university collections have shown that between 40 and 60% of books acquired by
university libraries have never been borrowed.

Yet media remains, in the academy, the red-headed stepchild!

I'm sorry about being so slow to reply. I think it's good to have a
protocol when it's under current discussion on Videolib and there's
likely to be some overlapping activity. If history's any guide though
the likelihood of overlapping editors at other times is practically
nil so it probably isn't necessary to announce one's activity on an
ongoing basis.

As I was new to media when I joined this library 2 ½ years ago, I asked for

to Horizon in 2000 was tossed (but then, we are not Berkeley either...). Now I
use these lists to see which VHS tapes are most likely to need replacing with
DVD if available.

[Videolib] Cinema Classics/Desert Island Films

2011-08-18 Thread Ball, James (jmb4aw)
Does anyone know anything about the recent (I think it's recent) influx of
DVD-R reissues marketed as Cinema Classics / Desert Island Films? Here are a
few from Amazon:

The top DVDs were all feature films, topped by A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE
GODFATHER, PT. 2, and BLADE RUNNER.

So do you have more hope for the world now, Gary, with those top three?
Forrest Gump was 24th on our list. ;)

Re: [Videolib] Snapshot of highest used videos

2011-08-18 Thread Beth Clausen
I've used circulation information for the reasons cited by many of you - but
also as an outreach tool. We've run "contests" for patrons as to guess - for
example - how many video items circulated in a given academic quarter - and the
closest guess wins a couple of movie passes (predictable - but effective
prize). Or what is the title that is checked out most often - all correct
guesses are entered to win...yes - movie passes - this one I expect to run this
fall.

This sounds trivial on the face - but it is easy to do - and it encourages
greater engagement between our patrons and service desk staff. It has also
given me the excuse to announce a winner and shout about the startling
circulation statistics to a broader audience including library staff who may
not view the dvd/blu-ray/vhs collections on an even keel with other
collections. The fact that the collection has exponentially greater circulation
than any other in the library (particularly given size) is quite an attention
grabber!

Hmmm... now how do I work in that circ was up nearly 25% last year over the
previous year which was also a record breaker?

Thanks,
Beth

Slight correction --Amazon is not selling Yellow Submarine. A third party
vendor is selling it via Amazon. Big difference. It is still OOP or OD.
These are probably remainder copies. Also Amazon often gets remainders and
sells them when nowhere else or very few places have them, so just because
Amazon is currently selling something doesn't necessaruly mean it is in current
release.

Forrest Gump was 24th on our list. ;)
