Hello -
I'm helping a patron look for documentaries that show whites working towards
civil rights equality in the 1960s American south. Can you provide any
suggestions?
We would like items that are easy to purchase and/or interlibrary loan, if
possible.
  Thank you for any help,

[Videolib] Trying to purchase Attica

2014-08-27 Thread Hutchison, Jane
Greetings,
I am needing assistance in finding the documentary, Attica
(http://atticathefilm.com/index.html) for purchase as a DVD.

I looked for possible purchasing options, both on their website and through any
other place I could think of, but only see 'screening' options.

In addition, I tried to contact the producer through the email address on their
site, but had my message returned as undeliverable.

Can anyone assist in finding a distributor? Thanks, Jane

What I heard was that director was EXTREMELY difficult and no one wanted to
deal with her in terms of distribution. I see something like 8 copies
listed in VHS in OCLC and another 8 or so in 16mm. I think the bottom line
is that you would have to contact Ms. Firestone directly but since she
clearly is not selling copies I would not get my hopes up.

NYPL preserved ATTICA a number of years ago and can put you in contact with

Hi Elena,

I’m also interested in getting a copy of the film. One of our faculty used the

I'm happy to hear this is still being used in the classroom. I also teach
with ATTICA (using the 16mm print), in my film history class, and find it
quite flexible as an instructional tool.

As for DVDs, I think Cinda is more open to making the film available on
request. She just gave permission for the 16mm print to be screened at the
University of Chicago (
http://southsideprojections.org/cinda-firestones-attica-1974-screening-and-discussion/)
and her assistant did mention something about DVD copies for sale. It's
worth giving her a call and asking. Again, feel free to contact me
off-list for her information.

Will the first person who gets in contact with Ms. Firestone report back.
It does not appear she is selling copies since there is no library listing
for a DVD copy on OCLC. Well to be accurate of the 14 listings they seem
divided between VHS and 16mm , the only DVD appears to be dubbed from a
VHS. I would think if she was selling the DVD there would be listings for
it on OCLC

It isn't a purchase. Unlike many of ASP's other packages, the content in this
one is licensed for a number of years. There is no option to purchase the
content. The material is great as is the platform, but this one is really on a
subscription model, not a purchase model.

Re: [Videolib] Whites and Civil Rights ~ two from Bullfrog Films

2014-08-27 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hello, Nicholle,

Bullfrog Films offers two titles: "The Long Walk to Freedom"
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/long.html
A story of 12 ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things in the
Civil Rights movement.

"Home of the Brave" http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/hob.html
Told through the eyes of her children, this critically acclaimed film examines
the case of Viola Liuzzo, the only white woman murdered in the Civil Rights
Movement, and reveals why we hear so little about her. A 39-year-old mother of
five from Detroit, she joined thousands of people in Selma, Alabama for the
historic Voting Rights March in 1965. Shortly after it ended, she was shot in
the head by a car full of Klansmen, while driving on a deserted highway. J.
Edgar Hoover immediately mounted a smear campaign to divert attention from the
fact that a key FBI informant was in the car with Liuzzo's killers. This
gender-based discrediting of her name has succeeded up till now in robbing
Viola Liuzzo of her rightful place in our history.

We have trailers for both of these films on our web site. Let me know if you
have any questions.

Hello -
I'm helping a patron look for documentaries that show whites working towards
civil rights equality in the 1960s American south. Can you provide any
suggestions?
We would like items that are easy to purchase and/or interlibrary loan, if

Hi Linda,

We have the Kwik Case DVD I (fully enclosed) for our DVDs from Gressco for our
almost 8000 DVDs. LOVE THEM. The vendor is great and we have not had any
problems. I tested most of the ones out there and this was the only one I
couldn't break open by hand and remove the disc. in less than 2 minutes. The
most I could do is break it closed : )Let me know if you have other
questions. Wish they had a fully enclosed VHS one too!

Our DVDs are in open shelves and unlocked at checkout.

I am needing assistance in finding the documentary, Attica

I looked for possible purchasing options, both on their website and through
any other place I could think of, but only see 'screening' options.

In addition, I tried to contact the producer through the email address on
their site, but had my message returned as undeliverable.

Can anyone assist in finding a distributor? Thanks, Jane

You could try to see if it was released in the UK and get a PAL copy but it
was never released in the US and asking the rights holder to sell one DVD
with English titles in NTSC on a film they failed to sell in the US is not
likely to work and not worth tracking them down.

Keep in mind well over 90% of films made outside the US are not released
here.

Looks like it was available from Amazon.uk & Amazon.ca for a time. There
appear to have been DVDs available at one time on amazon.ca and amazon.uk, but
they show as “unavailable” now. The original Canadian distributor (Alliance
Atlantis Vivafilm) has been bought and sold a couple of times over the past few
years and the current owner (eOne) doesn’t show it in its catalog.

English titles in NTSC on a film they failed to sell in the US is not likely to
work and not worth tracking them down.
Keep in mind well over 90% of films made outside the US are not released here.

The faculty member who is interested in this has her own French-only DVD
release, but was really looking for one with English subtitles for use with one
of her classes. All of these currently available on amazon.ca appear to be
French-only versions. Thanks for your help.

Well it is out of print but there are used copies that are not insanely
expensive since that is the only option it seems reasonable.

Sorry I did not think of that, for FRENCH films this something to check,
sometimes English but mostly French. Not so much any other country

not sure how legal those are, also kind of expensive however the film is worth
that price
Good luck
