Dear VideoLib,

After 33 years as staff at San Francisco State University and 15
wonderful years as a media librarian, I will retire on December 30,
2012. Listening in on and occasionally contributing to the
discussions, arguments and general enlightenment that is VideoLib

I, however, will not. Current plans are to explore California and

will move to Missouri, where I grew up, where the cost of living is
lower and where government-issued pensions like mine are not taxed.

Original distributor: http://www.jrp-ringier.com/pages/index.php
Producer: http://www.bureaudesvideos.com/
Format: PAL (although we prefer NTSC)

Additional Information:
Films Transferred to video 1972-1977
Edited by Nicolas Trembley, Paris, 2006
DVD PAL 58 min.
Multizone DVD. For private use only. EDV 1393

ISBN 13: 978-3-905770-09-4

“Four Short Films 1972-1973” itself, as a single DVD, does not seem
to be available in any format.
An American company, Electronic Arts Intermix http://www.eai.org/title.htm?id=14628
sells DVDs on Baldessari in an NTSC format (which we would prefer)
but the Educational version is expensive. To get all that were
originally on the Paris DVD (3 different films) would cost us $1000.

QUESTIONS:
1. Does anyone know of alternative sources for this work?
2. Is there anything that would limit our creating a copy from
our damaged version---if we cannot find a reasonably affordable
replacement?
I must confess I’m ignorant of French or international copyright
laws---if or how they apply in cases like this.

[Videolib] Comments by Handman

2012-06-27 Thread Brigid Duffy
Hello All,

A Collection of Gary-isms, to ease today's pain:

On overdue videos:
“A 400 buck fine almost always gets the stuff back.”
“For lost or "permanently misplaced" items, we charge retail cost of
replacement...faculty, grad student instructors, Nobel laureates,
doesn't matter.”

On illegal copying by faculty:
“Tell the faculty member you'll bake him/her a nice cake with a file
in it when he/she becomes cellmates with Martha Stewart...”

On inadequate classroom equipment:
“Since I am (thank the gods of media) not responsible for classroom
equipment, there's really nothing I can do except fume and plead.”
“...I dunno about other academic institutions, but at Berkeley, a good
number of classrooms don't even have window shades, let alone
projectors that will do justice to Blu Ray.”

On fair use:
“Well, unfortunately, there is no nice, tidy, fair use cookbook recipe
for most of this stuff. ”
“Well, whether there's a problem or not depends on how wild and wooly
your institution is in interpreting fair use.”

On work:
“Hullo all (and don't we all fall down on our knees and thanks the
stars it's Friday)”
“Yo ho, maties! ('m feeling positively pirate-y today, for some reason)”
“Thanks God for a discussion thread NOT about copyright... OK...here's
my 2.5 cents (damn, I miss the cents key on the keyboard!): “
“Now, I'm not saying that Berkeley is typical (I would NEVER say that
Berkeley is typical), “

On independent producers:
“if the small guys with cool stuff go away, God help us all.”

On tiered pricing:
“I've been mulling over the spate of recent posts re tiered pricing,
etc. Mulling and stewing (sorta sounds like holiday dinner, don't it?) “

On media use:
“you can talk about forcing faculty to reserve in advance all you
want; you can try to predict probable forthcoming need based on past
use patterns. It's still a crap shoot. “

On unversity administrators;
“You're boss is sorely deluded...Hers is, I'm afraid, the kind of
bubbly administratorspeak that's based less on insight and real
knowledge and more on on buzz and other ill-gotten notions picked up
banging around the infosphere...”
“I think there is an almost universal perception (outside of our small
professional clique) that the specialization is no longer really
needed (if it ever was). This, of course, is utter bushwah...but
tell that to administrators closely watching the bottom line. ”
“Where to start? So much stupidity, so little time to vent...”

On multi-region machines:
“Get another Senior Purchasing agent...or have her (him) show you the
law that says these machines are illegal.”

On streaming media:
“Again, my major concern in all of this is the potential of sliding
toward the procrustean...the tendency to cut of the head and the feet
to match the size of the bed.”
“By the way, in my experience, students don't really give a two-penny
damn about image quality, in most instances. These are folks (like my
daughter) who will watch a 90 minute feature film on their iPhones. “
“I think it is becoming increasingly common for technology to dictate
content, and that's a really nasty direction to take. Library
administrators and tech salesmen aren't always that far apart in their
witting (or unwitting) buy-in to this trend.”

On subject lists:
“OK...this thing has gotten completely out of hand...I'm stopping
now...really...I mean itI'm still open for suggestions, but just a
crack...”
“No the be-all and end-all, but at least it's something.”

On responding too fast to a VideoLib post:
“I'm starting to confuse myself...I can imagine what I'm doing to you
all...”

On sharing with VideoLib a video he made for a documentary class:
“(yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah...copyright blah blah blah...write it off
as my inclusion here as part of valid criticism and commentary)”

On media collections:
“We should all have the motto: "It's the CONTENT THAT COUNTS"
tattooed on our forearms...”

On A Fair(y) Use Tale Mash-up:
Faden should be carried around on all of our shoulders. He's my new
hero!”

Finally:

“I know a lot of my pals on this list have different opinions, based
on local need and circumstance...so let er' rip...”
“In any case, your thoughts and comments would be interesting and
appreciated!”
“Keep calm and carry on.”
“Gary (who is headed off shortly to an unpretentious little pinot and
an emailess weekend)”

Thank you, Mr. Handman.

Ridiculous as it may seem, that IS the beginning of the DVD. The
grainy infomercial video is the 'loading the menu' sequence. Hit the
menu button and you get what looks like the end of an infomercial -
Send $39.95 for the 'Tappy Tibbons Collection' but two-thirds of the
way down that page are the conventional play movie - chapter index -
bonus features selections. That's the menu. The bonus features sub-
menu has the same style.

I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time---

San Francisco's Silent Film Festival will present the 5 1/2 hour

Oakland's Paramount Theater, March 24 - April 12, 2012. It should be

According to their website, there will be no DVD, no Blu-Ray, and no

Re: [Videolib] Plea from a Media Collection Decimation Zone

2011-12-21 Thread Brigid Duffy
Check with other libraries in the area to see what their theft rate is
("monitor the shrinkage" - really! The items don't decrease in size,
they get stolen.).

Work up an estimate on what it will cost to replace that percentage of
the collection - or do a range, of 5% - 10% - 25%.

Present this to The Powers That Be, and thank them for the increase in
your media purchasing budget, which they must perforce immediately
authorize to replace the items that will be stolen. You will handle
the complaints from faculty and students about class disruption and
information lost - unless they ask to speak to a higher authority.

It's an idea, anyway.

Media Collections Colleagues,

I send this out at least in part as a plea for support – moral
support at the very least. Last week from out of the blue my
library director announced that we were to move our media collection
(about 4000 VHS videos and DVDs) from the media room (with closed
stacks) downstairs to open stacks around the circulation desk.
Although some of the titles known to be heavily used by faculty for
teaching are to be put “behind the desk” in a limited teaching
collection, most of the titles are to be placed in an “outer ring”
of shelving around the circulation desk open to patrons and the
public.

Though we had been told that we would be investigating and planning
for such a potential move sometime in the new year, this directive
came without warning and certainly without any significant planning
or forethought. The titles are to be put on open shelving. There
are no locked cases involved and none of the titles are tattle-
taped. In the media room patrons had to check-out titles even if
they wanted to view them in the media room. We could track
circulation statistics as well as maintain a high level of
security. As of the beginning of 2012, no such control will be in
place. In short, the entire collection will be unsecure and exposed
to whomever deans pull a title off the shelf - to view or otherwise.
I have expressed my deep concerns, but the answer I have gotten back
is that we “will put things out on the shelves and monitor the
shrinkage.” Not the most effective way to manage the collection I
have noted. Seems akin to putting pamphlets on a display that says
“take one.” Seems to me this gets to the basic issue of what a
library media collection is for, and how should it be used and
managed?

For the record, my concerns have been echoed by other collages
including several higher up my chain of command. But, top level
administration is un-swayed by such arguments, though I intend to
continue to make them even as I am compelled to move the
collection. I suspect there are backroom politics involving space
issues ownership (of the media room) that I will not go into here.
My biggest concern, apart from the sheer suddenness of it all, is
the future security and integrity of the collection. To go from a
closed room (with check-out viewing only) to completely open stacks
with no security control virtually overnight is not a good thing in
my opinion. I fear that my circulating collection is about to be
decimated and devalued at the very least.

I suppose that in my shock at what I have been asked to do, I need
some input from those on this list. My big question to my media
colleagues on this list is this: Does anyone out there have their
media collection on completely open stacks with no security?I’ll
take any input (advisory or consoling) I can get.

Thanks in advance and happy holidays.

If you can find it, there is a 26 minute episode from the CBS
"Twentieth Century" series, made in 1959, titled "The Movies Learn to
Talk"

Sixty-five years of the development of sound films are telescoped in
this CBS documentary. It presents a variety of examples of sound
research including that of Edison, Gaumont, DeForest, Warner Brothers'
Vitaphone and Fox Movietone. Brief scenes are shown from silent and
sound films with celebrities such as John Barrymore, George Bernard
Shaw and Al Jolson in " The Jazz Singer ".

Re: [Videolib] Western Asian Films

From Wikipedia:

Western Asia, West Asia, Southwest Asia or Southwestern Asia are terms
that describe the westernmostportion of Asia. The terms are partly
coterminous with the Middle East, which describes a geographical
position in relation to Western Europe rather than its location within
Asia. Due to this perceived Eurocentrism, international organizations

Har! Perhaps it's California, too, but in LC catalog-speak, Western

At San Francisco State University it's faculty only, one week,
renewable for one week, maximum 7 items - but we are flexible on that.
Some teachers need 20 for a weekend film class they are teaching,
others only come to campus once a week to teach their class, some need
to show over more than 2 weeks.

Students watch media over a closed-circuit cable system.

the administration of course thinks it’s “leisure” and the sweet

I’m donating a DVD player, thanks to the National Media Market

This case is far from resolved.

The case was dismissed yesterday in a Los Angeles courtroom. Here's
the ruling as a PDF:

http://www.aime.org/news.php?download=nG0kWaN9ozI3plMlCGRm&u=11100412

The Duke library blog summarizes:
http://blogs.library.duke.edu/scholcomm/2011/10/04/streaming-video-case-dismissed/

The federal judge said that AIME did not have standing to sue, and
that the argument that UCLA had waived its right to Sovereign
Immunity was too broad.

UCLA argued that under Soveriegn Immunity, the State of California —
and the state university, by extension—couldn't be sued in Federal
Court without the State of California's permission.

What wasn't decided—blogger Kevin Smith, J.D. notes—was the issue of
copyright. He says that issue turned on the language of the license
AIME granted regarding public performance.

Smith says the judge "seems to accept withouth discussion two
assertions—that streaming is not a "distribution" such as to
infringe the exclusive right to authorize distribution, and that
copying incidental to a licensed right (the right of public
performance) was fair use."

The last two paragraphs of Smith's blog post outline what claims
AIME can refile, the time limit and limits against the parties who
can be sued.

Smith's conclusion: The issue of streaming video as a fair use
hasn't been decided.

Hope this is helpful.

I have a graduate nursing faculty member looking for Ethics in
Nursing videos. We have Films on Demand, but she hasn't found what
she wants from their catalog. I've requested a free trial of
Nursing in Video from ASP (they list 4 videos that may work).
Anyone else have any other distributor suggestions?

She's looking for things like informed consent, confidentiality,
debriefing, Belmont Report, Tuskegee Report, and Helsinki Report.

Thanks,

[Videolib] Extended Education Classes

2011-09-13 Thread Brigid Duffy

Hi Videolib,

The face-to-face exemption allows:

"performance or display of a work by instructors or pupils in the
course of face-to-face teaching activities of a nonprofit educational
institution, in a classroom or similar place devoted to instruction"

A question has come up as to how far that goes.

Our extended education program has satellite programs in connection
with other colleges in the area. Can videos that SFSU bought for SFSU
classes be shown?

Our extended education program has a 'credit partners' option for
businesses and conferences, which will allow university credit for in-
house training or conferences, if they meet our university
department's standards for instruction. Can they use videos we have
bought in face to face instruction?

I swear, every time somebody tries to clear up copyright issues,
somebody else creates a new grey area.

Thanks for any information, ideas or opinions.

Re: [Videolib] Study Guides , was Re: Article on educational distribution

2011-07-07 Thread Brigid Duffy
We have 'study guide available' listed in our media descriptions,
where appropriate.

We considered listing links in the annotation, but after a few years
the links disappear with the websites (many NOVA videos, for
instance). Printed guides last longer, but take up more space. If they
are readily available teachers will take them, but if not, they gather
dust.

The best option? Include the study guide on the DVD. That takes up no
shelf space, is readily available to the user and doesn't disappear
before the DVD does.

Do you keep your DVDs in their original cases? I once set off a

Next time it happens, take a look inside the case. Or walk the case

We use clear DVD cases from Video Shopper

http://www.shopperinc.com/product.htm?pid=570689&cat=26400

They crack sometimes, but you can't control how patrons will treat them.

Whatever brand you buy and whomever you buy them from, get clear
cases. Much easier for staff (and the patron) to see what is - or
isn't - inside.

People of the Wind
DVD 19761 hr., 50 min.
In 1923 filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack recorded
the arduous migration of the Bhaktiari people across the Zagros
Mountains of western Iran in " Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life ".
Fifty years later filmmaker Anthony Howarth traveled with the Babadi,
part of the Bhaktiari people, across the same mountains. As this
documentary shows, though some technology has changed, the human
struggle remains much the same.

DVD Empire for $20.93 plus shipping, amazon.com for $26.99 and many
other online retailers.

hi again

I'm gonna forward my reply (below) and you query to the list.

in order to stream to the classroom you need a laptop with wireless
or IP
network access and you need a projector that will handle digital
output

(which is most of them)

Progressive downloads (streaming) is a pain in the ass. Don't go
there!

All that said, I would NEVER (ever) recommend that a faculty person
opt

for streamed delivery over DVD. I consider myself somewhat savvy and
possessing considerable sang froid when it comes to using tech to
teach,
and I can tell you from considerable experience that it's always a
total

crap shoot--an experience totally dependent on network vagaries and
equipment quirks.

Classes here start at 10 min after the hour, typically, which means
you

have 5-10 minutes to run into the class, boot out whomever is in there
milling around from the previous class, whip out your lap top, VGA and
audio cables, find the input box and hook them up, test the sound
level,

pray that the projector is working and that the network is not acting
hinky.

Not my idea of a good time.

Gary

Subject: Remote Streaming to Classrooms

Newsreel would like to call on the "wisdom of the list" to answer a
technical question. How difficult is it to stream content from a
remote

(not campus) server directly into a classroom? Can it be run directly
through a video projector or does it need a laptop with an internet
connection? What are the potential glitches we might encounter?
Finally, does it make a difference if the content is streamed using
real

time (RTMP) or progressive streaming? Please answer off-line to
l...@newsreel.org. Thanks.

If you could tell me how to post this or post it for me, I'd greatly
appreciate it. I have returned from my two week sojourn in Kyoto;
many
cherry blossoms, many Zen temples, no post-tsunami stress syndrome.
It's

the end of term so we should be able to schedule our long-postponed
lunch date.

Best Wishes

Larry.

[Videolib] Film and Laserdisc storage

2011-03-22 Thread Brigid Duffy
Hello, all,

We will be moving our media collection into new space in San Francisco
State University's new library (let's hear it for bond issues) by the
end of the year. This will include moving close to 2,000 16mm films
and laserdiscs. Some of these are still in active use, though most,
honestly, are not.

If anyone out there still has 16mm film or laserdiscs in their
collection, could you let me know what you use for shelving?

We would prefer vertical storage for the laserdiscs (in the past we
used hanging bags) and vertical storage for the small number of
frequently used films. I understand horizontal storage is preferred
for long term film storage. For now we want to know what everybody
else is doing. Photos would be helpful, if you can.

This is not a money-is-no-object situation, but we do want to keep
these instructional materials in good condition for as long as possible.

Please feel free to reply off list, if you prefer.

Thanks,

Deadly Dentist? That was a new one for me. As a daughter of two
dentists, I’ve always been bothered that dentists in the movies only
seem to exist as another stereotype of pure evil. I am curious if
anyone can list movies (not documentaries) that show dentists in a
positive light.

Of course, it’s not Friday, so maybe I’m posing this question a bit
early.

Glee recently featured John Stamos as a dentist. While he may not
have played an excellent dentist, I was encouraged by the fact that
he was not evil.

Thanks,
Sandra

Re: [Videolib] notice to faculty re video/dvd acquisitions

2011-02-03 Thread Brigid Duffy

Back in the days when SFSU had a media purchasing budget...

1. Always notify the faculty by e-mail when something they requested
is ready for checkout.

2. One library office asks for a list of new media once a year, so
they can incorporate it into their online catalog. That's all they
seem to want. We send an e-mail to department chairs just before the
fall semester starts of all media bought in their area, whether they
requested it or not. They can forward the list to their faculty, if
they want.

3. No direct contact with library subject selectors.

4. Neither Academic Technology nor the Library here at SF State, as
far as I know, have an online newsletter.

5. Don't forget going to department meetings and requesting 5 minutes
of their time to discuss what you have and what they need.

Try Novus 1 plastic clean & shine, and Novus 2 fine scratch remover.
Actually in the automotive section of amazon.com but works well on
DVDs. Probably in your local auto parts store, too.

#1 is good for cleaning, #2 does well with fine scratches; no need
for #3, the heavy scratch remover.

Should cost you less than $20 on amazon.com

I usually agree with everything you say about 98% of the time and

that MOST people don't realize it or care when they're watching
badly-done video, but that doesn't mean that they don't get a whole
lot more when the image is big and gorgeous. There is a physical
almost spiritual reaction when you see a great film on a big screen
or an original work of art hanging on the wall. (We had both
experiences this month and I'm off to Le Giornate del Cinema Muto so
I'm very happy.)

And I know that most of AV work is dealing with educational films
that can (but not always) have a different emphasis on quality of
information over beauty of visuals and classrooms that are
definitely not the Castro, but one reason the experience of watching
films and videos is so devalued by people is that they haven't
experienced seeing a Terrence Malick film on a giant screen.

We sent a 35mm print of one of our favorite releases to a theater in
Minneapolis that's showing it in a couple weeks. Four of the young
theater workers put the film up the very day it arrived to watch it
because they couldn't wait to see it on the big screen.

Re: [Videolib] DVD enhancements

I have occasionally bought a DVD because it included a short film we
needed. We also had a professor in business request Disney's
"Ratatouille" not for the film, but for a supplementary interview on
filmmaking and running a gourmet restaurant - "Fine Food and Film: A
Conversation with Brad Bird and Thomas Keller" (2007, 14 minutes).

Problem is, unless the supplementary materials are well publicized,
nobody will know they are there, and that's not much of a selling point.

And how many people buy anything (cars, phones, books, DVDs or
whatever) because they want the add-ons?

If anyone is interested, please also let me know too. My sister,
Patricia Gelaude, retired a few years ago after working at the Library
for about 30 years. She could probably do a pretty decent tour.

Excellent! I will refund your registration in KC, ok? Funny you
should mention videocam – we are bringing one to create a short
video to put on our website for next year. Watch out for the
interviewer stalking attendees...

The Nelson-Atkins museum is actually within walking distance and
it’s worth a visit. Although I think the shuttlecock looks silly.

That's odd; when I surf health food websites, I see many references to
this 'top ten' list (though they don't all have the same foods listed).

Nothing on the FDA website.
