FOR SALE: Apple 14” Monitor

2022-08-14 Thread Barry Cross

Apple 14” Monitor a solid CRT traditional model that is in good working
nick.

I can not deliver so buyers must collect from the UK only

I won’t mention a price as you can work out that for yourself, let's do it
the old fashioned way and haggle.

I am finally getting shot of all of my old Macs hardware and software to
good homes, which is why I am still persisting with this Group, though as I
haven’t seen any posts of late I wonder if its still extant. I make no
apologies for listing items that I have already mentioned especially as
that was some time past.

FS: Apple ///, 10MB Profile, Drive ///, Monitor /// Package

2020-08-09 Thread Dylan McDermond
I thought this might get more interest here than it did on the lem-swap list.

I have a working Apple /// setup I’m finally ready to part with. It includes a
256k Apple ///, Monitor ///, 10MB ProFile and external Drive ///. Everything
is working 100%. You can see some older photos on my site at
http://applefool.com/applefool/Apple.html and a more recent image at
https:/www.mcdermond.net/dylan/images/apple3.jpeg

More information or photos can be provided on request, of course.

I’m looking for about $1000 + shipping for everything (the last time I was
quoted shipping, it was ~$200 from USA coast-to-coast, ground service,
professionally packaged). Shipping is from Corvallis, OR 97330

Thanks!

No NuBus video card requires a driver; it should have everything the operating
system needs at boot in ROM. A driver may be required for acceleration or other
such features, but basic display should always work.

Not quite; not having a monitor plugged in to the port is what disables onboard

If the Sony LCD supports 640x480 @ 66.67Hz, and the VGA adapter had the
sense pins configured properly for that resolution, and the VGA adapter was
plugged in prior to turning on the IIci, then there's almost definitely
something wrong with your video subsystem. I would recommend a NuBus
graphics card, which can allow for greater resolution(s) and color depth
than 640x480x256 colors.

Re: Mac IIci with blank monitor

2018-11-06 Thread Jeff Walther
I didn't reread the whole thread, but I checked the first few posts. What
kind of Apple monitor are you using?

The Apple Basic Color Monitor will not work with the IIci. It is
contemporary with it, but was a cheap .39" pitch rebadged Goldstar (IIRC)
monitor and didn't support the signals on the IIci.

The Apple Color Plus or the Apple 14" Color Monitor should work.

I also had good luck with (using an adapter) the Viewsonic 4e and 5e of the
time. The Viewsonic monitors offered the UniMacFly adapter for Macs, which
has the virtue of including a key to the switch settings printed on the
adapter itself.

Yes, the electronics inside the monitor are basically the same anyway. Mac
monitors of this type pre-dated multisync SVGA, but were contemporary with

There are many companies that make them. I know that Griffin makes ones for
modern Macs. You need one that is DB-15 to VGA (HD-15). You don't need a
fancy one with manual sense pin configuring, as you only need 640x480.

That's one option, yes. There are others out there. Most of them just connect
the signals through to the monitor, and have dip-switches to tell the Mac what
kind of monitor to expect (because old Macs don't know about EDID).

The VGA LCD is worth a shot - mac to VGA adapters are fairly cheap if you
haven't got one already.

There might also be someone near you that would be willing to help test if
you are comfortable posting what state or county you're in.

If you have a VGA monitor or something with a composite-video input, it should
be possible to jury-rig something with wires to see whether the right signals
are coming through.

Even a multimeter should help, on in the AC voltage or frequency settings.

Hi

I’m wondering if the problem lies with the monitor. Can you connect to another
mac and see if there is any action. I had a similar problem, you’d get is a
monitor power supply starting up. but if there is an issue with the horizontal
sweep circuit (the part that usually goes wrong) then there will not be any
video.

Is there RAM in the four SIMM slots of Bank A?I can't remember if the
IIci will boot without RAM in Bank A, but in any case, the on-board video
circuitry draws the RAM it uses from Bank A.If there is only RAM in

Good suggestions all.

Prior to sending the board in for recapping, the video worked perfectly with no

I will have to scrutinize the board around the video section to look solder
joint bridging or contamination.

As far as testing the monitor, what could I plug into it?

 Hi D,
At the risk of sounding patronising (not intended, honest) have you eliminated
all the other possibilities?
- Was the Iici working before it was recapped?
- If yes, were there any particular symptoms such as odd images on screen?
Checkerboard? vertical lines?
- Have you checked there are no dry solder joints? Magnifying glass is good
(personal experience)
- Check ALL joints, not just the ones you did.
- Have you checked there are no bridged solder joints? Again magnifying glass
is good (personal experience)
- Are the brightness and contrast controls turned up on the monitor? (I swear
this is a thing, personal experience)
- Are you getting all the correct voltages from the PSU rails?
- When you recapped the mainboard, did you recap the power supply as well? I do
this as a matter of course. All those heat up cool down cycles will eventually
throw the voltages off.
- After recapping the mainboard, the board was cleaned to remove any residue of
battery and old cap electrolyte? Electrolyte will causes shorts. I use
isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol but I have run a dishwasher cycle or six on
Analog/PSU boards as well as mainboards (remove chips from sockets before
washing).
- Can you check the monitor works with something else?
I know it sounds like I'm covering the obvious but it's all meant in good faith.

There are several reasons why the video might not work, and not all of them are
detectable by software. The chime mainly means we can eliminate faulty memory
or interrupt handling as a potential cause. A completely detached video cable
would simply cause the Mac to default to producing a low-resolution, monochrome
video signal.

The fault may lie in the CRT unit. Powering up simply means that it's
receiving power - there is a mains-voltage switch in the IIci's PSU which
handles that. If possible, we should verify that correct signals are coming
out of the Mac before opening the CRT, but if there is a test mode or an
alternative source of compatible video signals, we can use that to isolate
whether any faults exist in the CRT.

Likewise, there may be a fault in the video signal generator circuitry, more
technically known as the RAMDAC. It's possible for the RGB signals to be
correctly produced but the sync signals to be missing, and vice versa, and both
would result in a blank screen. This mostly consists of a relatively large
chip which should be near the video output. Look for circuit board damage or
contamination in this area, as well as any faulty capacitors which may
previously have been missed.

Re: Mac II LC monitor options

2016-11-23 Thread 'Keith Jamison' via Vintage Macs
Hi James,
I thought I had a bad monitor for my LC475.
Turns out the monitor socket had broken through fatigue and it wasn't supplying
a good ground - the pins were soldered to the board but somewhere between the
socket and the board, there were dry joints. Also, the two tabs that connect to
ground were sheared.
Only solution was to source and replace the monitor socket - now there's a
great picture.
Do you have access to another Mac on which you can test the monitor? Maybe a
buddy or local Mac User Group? Try googling mac user group in your local area.
Regards,

 Keith

There are a ton of adapters that allow you to connect VGA type
monitors to the Mac monitor port. Most have "DIP" switches to
configure the video to match. I used to have a drawer full but got rid

Re: Tilt/Swivel Base for 13" AppleColor Monitor?

2016-11-03 Thread Brendan Shanks
Yes they do exist, this thread has some more info/pictures:
https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/26452-stand-for-applecolor-13-high-resolution-rgb-monitor/

I have one, got it a year ago from 'oldappleguy' on 68kmla. He had a few he was
trying to get rid of, might still have some. Send him a PM if you're interested.

It's a perfect match for putting a 13" AppleColor on top of a IIci

Memory Mapper does not have any kind of CPU usage monitor. It can not show
CPU load %. From its settings I could not find CPU meter either.

If memory serves, programs were supposed to release their tight fisted hold on
the processor, but were not required to do so… wait_next_event was the system
call which was multi-tasking friendly while the System 6 carry-over
get_next_event was not. The real problem with wait_next_event was you (the
programmer) never knew when you would get control back again (because another
program might be using get_next_event). Again, if memory serves… It has been
a year or 2 (or 20) since I have thought about it.

You could probably change the .trap address for get_next_event to point to
wait_next_event, but I would not want to guess at the possible implications.

For a start, you could try a newer version of Peekaboo - apparently v1.6 still
supports Classic MacOS. It’s probably the best tool for the job. Reading
through its docs, I am reminded that applications are able to tell MacOS how
often they want the “idle” events, from “immediately” all the way through to
“never”. Some applications say “immediately” when they don’t actually need
that, and they’ll show up as 100% on Peekaboo - but later versions of Peekaboo
are apparently able to override it.

Audio applications are a special case; they tend to do a lot of things at
interrupt time, since the response time of the standard event system is not
guaranteed in the slightest (again, *cooperative* multitasking). I don’t know
whether Peekaboo handles interrupt-time stuff at all. However, it should be
possible to *specifically* measure interrupt time using a program which
measures how often idle events are received, or which repeatedly runs a short
benchmark.

It’s tricky, because Classic MacOS is a *cooperatively* multitasking OS, and
continually offers idle CPU time to applications in case they want to do
something with it. It’s a very different model than a modern pre-emptive
system.

That said, BasiliskII is able to avoid using 100% of the host CPU when the
emulated Mac isn’t doing anything. I’m not sure precisely how it detects an
idle condition, though. The 68K instruction set does include a STOP
instruction, but I have no idea whether the Mac uses it as standard.

When asking for help to diagnose a fault, please try to be as descriptive as

What may seem like a minor thing, could be the very item that needs looked at
first.

When any computer starts up, certain things are expected, a chime or ding, the
sound of a fan, or a hard drive spinning, beeps, lights flashing, etc.

When you plug in your LC475 and connect it to the power, please describe
exactly what happens when you flip the power switch at the back.

As a guide, the following should happen on a normal LC475.

1: The fan starts up
2: The speaker sounds a chime
3: The hard drive will spin up. There may be a loud pitched whine on an old one
or there may be a 'chattering' noise.
4: The monitor will become bright.
5: An icon of a happy Mac will appear if the hard drive has a proper system
folder installed.
6: More icons will appear along the bottom of the screen as extensions load
into the system.
7: The desktop will appear.

If you flick that power switch and there is nothing, not even the sound of a
fan, the first thing you check and double check is the fuse in the plug. Use a
known working power cord if you cannot test the fuse.

Lift the lid off the LC475 and check that the battery is new or at least the
old one is removed. There is always a date code on the battery. It's usually a
month and last two digits of the year of manufacture. For example 10-94 would
indicate October 1994, 02-02 would indicate February 2002.

Look for signs of corrosion (rust coloured deposits or a grey/white dust) that
might indicate a deeper problem. The capacitors on the logic board are small
silvery metal cylinders usually with a black mark to one side and some numbers
printed on the top. Beneath these devices, check for a discolouration on the
logic board. If you angle the board a little, the light will not reflect much.
That indicates the caps have leaked. That's also corrosive. The way to proceed
here is to give the logicboard a wash with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Work it in
with a toothbrush. Wear gloves to protect your hands from the corrosive leaks
and the effect of the isopropyl alcohol.

If you have a known working power cord and there is still no fan, suspect the
Power Supply is faulty. This may be a blown fuse or a more serious issue with
old capacitors. The power supply will have to be repaired or replaced.

Charles at www.maccaps.com<http://www.maccaps.com/> can advise you on what you
need to do. He offers a capacitor replacement service. He can send you the caps
you need if you are confident to do the work yourself or he can do the work if
you send the power supply to him.

It's also a good idea to send him the main logic board and have it recapped at
the same time. Even if fixing the Power Supply starts up the LC475, it's only a
matter of time before the logic board caps give up and cause problems there
also.

I have two LC475s and I have replaced the caps in the Power Supply and Logic
boards on both. But I happen to be a graduate in Electronics and Communications
Engineering so this is very straightforward for me.

If you ever decide to sell the LC475, Make sure that you indicate if the
computer has been overhauled and new components fitted. That will interest
genuine buyers. It should also make you a little extra over a broken or faulty
computer or one that has never been recapped.

I hope this helps,

Regards,

Keith

Re: Lc 475 and over monitor

2016-02-20 Thread Keith Jamison
When asking for help to diagnose a fault, please try to be as descriptive as
possible.
1: The fan starts up2: The speaker sounds a chime3: The hard drive will spin
up. There may be a loud pitched whine on an old one or there may be a
'chattering' noise.4: The monitor will become bright.5: An icon of a happy Mac
will appear if the hard drive has a proper system folder installed.6: More
icons will appear along the bottom of the screen as extensions load into the
system.7: The desktop will appear.
Charles at www.maccaps.com can advise you on what you need to do. He offers a
capacitor replacement service. He can send you the caps you need if you are
confident to do the work yourself or he can do the work if you send the power
supply to him.
I hope this helps,
Regards,
Keith

Re: Macintosh SE FDHD Monitor not Working

2015-07-30 Thread Doug McNutt

After you get the case opened and before you start monkeying with the
flyback transformer and its high voltages have a look at the low voltage
power connectors associated with the vertical analog board.

I have found dozens of cracked solder joints and crimp joints where the
wires fit into pins on the connectors. Often just wiggling them around a
bit is sufficient. The pins at the back end of the picture tube use a
multi pin socket that can come loose too.

It's possible to check for high voltage by turning the opened computer
off and checking for a spark when you poke an insulated and grounded
wire so that it slides under the rubber-like cover of the high voltage
pin on the tube. It should make a spark that you can hear. DON'T DO IT
UNLESS YOU HAVE DONE IT BEFORE. It's a few thousand volts but not as bad
as the 25000 volts in a big color monitor. You might well have a
neighbor who has done things like that or even has a voltmeter for the
purpose.

the two screws at the top of the case. If, by chance, you should
have such a tool then you could remove the case top and, without
touching anything else (could be high voltage like a TV), turn off
any lights and determine if there is a red glow in the rear end of
the picture tube - that's near the connector. If there's a red
glow, it probably means that the picture tube is OK. If the tube is
OK, then probably you would need to replace the high voltage
transformer (called a flyback transformer) and the component board on
which it is mounted. The flyback is the one that has the thick wire
attached to the middle of the picture tube.

Re: Macintosh SE FDHD Monitor not Working

2015-07-28 Thread coverturtle

Hi Carol,
Well, the Laserwriter is a beast! Quite a few are still working in
businesses, but you won't hear about it.

To determine the problem with the SE, you would need to remove the case
cover and that requires a Torx screwdriver or bit (T-20, I think) that
has a about an 8 shaft so it will reach all the way to the two screws
at the top of the case. If, by chance, you should have such a tool then
you could remove the case top and, without touching anything else (could
be high voltage like a TV), turn off any lights and determine if there
is a red glow in the rear end of the picture tube - that's near the
connector. If there's a red glow, it probably means that the picture
tube is OK. If the tube is OK, then probably you would need to replace
the high voltage transformer (called a flyback transformer) and the
component board on which it is mounted. The flyback is the one that has
the thick wire attached to the middle of the picture tube.

The Imagewriter is probably good for parts or even fixable. The
Laserwriter - I'm assuming it's the big heavy one - may work if none of
the parts are corroded (moisture is not good for electronics and cable
connections.) It's best to use a new cartridge. The laser should get
cleaning and maintenance which is replacing a few old parts but if it
does not turn on, then it may need a new power supply and those could be
hard to get. Maintenance kits - should be able to get from the
theprinterworks (google). When working, the big Laserwriter will draw
about 900-1000Watts, so it's power hungry. The laser could be very
dirty, so protect yourself and your clothing from the cartridge dust.
If on your clothes, DO A COLD WATER WASH first. Heat sets the dust and
would require many hot washes to remove, and could still have a stain.

Good luck. Shipping will be a pain unless you can get a local sale.
Sell the software separately if you must - it's probably more valuable
than the hardware - possibly except the laser. When working and in good
condition, the laser is pure workhorse, more robust than any new laser
on the market today and easier to repair. The weakest point is the
power supply, not because it is weak, but they do break and it's hard to
find a replacement (which has been cheap and easy) and possibly more
difficult to fix. Beware of aftermarket parts, use OEM wherever
possible. Maintenance kits usually did come with instructions; some
careful work is required, but simple and easy (however messy) for those
so inclined.

Hope that helps.
Jon

Try turning the brightness up. The control is just under the CRT.

I have a 15 Dell lcd monitor I use with my LC II, but I use an short
adapter with dip switches that goes between the monitors VGA cable and the

The adapter I have is one of these -

I don't remember it costing $13. Mine came with a foldout sheet describing

Re: Monitor

2015-05-08 Thread 'Keith Jamison' via Vintage Macs
I have only ever had trouble with a single Macintosh regarding this, a IIsi,
and I had tried several dongles shutting down and flipping DIP switches and
restarting until the PSU finally blew on the IIsi. I still need to source three
small capacitors. I had even bought a replacement video card and plugged that
in with no effect.
As for my LCII, LC475 and some Performa 6XX's, I used an original unbranded
DA15 to VGA adaptor from 1996 - no DIP switches - and an old 14 no-name VGA
monitor I picked up in PCWorld on sale about 12 years ago. It's rated for
1024x768 (but also works on 800x600) and works nicely on 640x480 as I have
upgraded the VRAM to the full amount on each Mac. I have a 12 Mac monitor
(came with the LCII) but it's in pieces awaiting a full recap.
Obviously this 14 monitor is special, maybe because of the lower resolution,
or its age.
I did use a Griffin dongle (dView maybe) on a friend's LCIII but I don't
remember the DIP settings. She was connecting it to a massive 19 WS monitor
and it took about 40 minutes going through all of the settings on three dongles
before we found one that worked.
I may make my own adaptors for other Macs based on what Cameron mentioned.
Sorry, I'm of no help to you.
Keith

Re: Monitor

2015-05-08 Thread Scott Brant
It's all good, I only bought this for nostalgia, and only have about $100 in
the full setup of keyboard, mouse, performa 475, 2 video adapters, video cable,
Ethernet card, and vga switch box.

I have two flat panel monitors plugged into my dell, and am trying with the
smaller monitor that is vga, the other is dvi.

I know the 475 works because of an eBay pic from the seller, but don't want
another monitor, especially a crt if I can avoid it... both due to weight,
size, and cost of shipping and purchase.

I'll get it working some day, I just have bigger and better priorities now.

Thanks!

Can you tell me more about the Sony dongle?

It's not about the size of the monitor, it's about resolution. Many macs can

this data handy unfortunately. You need to, iirc, short certain pins together
for it to boot into a certain resolution. There should be a diagram or data
somewhere. I routinely used to make these, in the mid 90s, to support single
resolution fixed frequency monitors that I would find on the surplus market
and sell them to Mac users. I still have a couple HP/Sony units tucked away.
Don't just start experimenting. You need to either buy a dongle or a cable
(that has the pins already configured). I have a few Sony dongles in storage,
but on one side they plug into a 15 pin Apple card/connector, a VGA cable on
the other side. Probably not what the op is looking for.
