Re: Question

Success!!!
I changed ONE cable on the back (just moved the one from the bottom
connector to the top and vice versa) and I have my 9 Gig HD up and running
(with a little help from APS PowerTools v4.1). I now welcome into my
family.Starfleet Command, Starfleet Academy and Earth Station McKinley.
:)

Now, the APS External HD is still flakey. However, I got it up and running
long enough to grab APS PowerTools off of it. However, now when the red
light flashes on the front, sometimes so does the green light. I used APS
PowerTools to install a new driver and for a while things worked fine. But
this last time I went to access the HD (to back it up onto one of my other
HDs) a funny thing happened. After awhile the window opened to
showNOTHING! However, it still said I had the same amount of data on
the HD.
Any ideas (yes, the drive is shut down for now as it not currently needed
and it has a tendency to lock up the computer).

Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't the SCSI ID zero for the logic
board? I don't think you can have a drive set to that address. Thank
god for firewire
TK

Nope, ID #7 is the CPU. The Drive is indeed set to 0 (it has 2 ID numbers
on the back and I set one to 0 and one to 4). So, according to SCSI Probe
only 2 and 4 are open (and 2 is not as thats where the flakey APS HD is set
to be).

Question

2003-06-26 Thread Steve Conrad
Since no one knew about my flakey HD (its still shut down) I thought I'd
pose a new question.

I finally got the second cable needed to hook up my 9 Gig HS external HD
but I cannot get it to show up on the SCSI Probe CP. Also, when I do hook
it up (the SCSI ID switches are set to 0 and 4 respectively, those are
2 of the unused IDs I have, the other being 2 which is where the flakey HD
goes) the HD under ID 6 disappears (only the odd numbered IDs show up).
So you know what goes where
0 Empty (ie it can be used)
1 Internal HD
2 Flakey APS HD (shut down)
3 Bernoulli
4 Empty (ie it can be used)
5 Bernoulli
6 External HD (terminates the external SCSI string)
7 Mac CPU

Ideas? Is there a specific place I should plug in the 9G HD (ie like the
Mac to the 9G HD the the rest onto it)?

Question about external HD

2003-06-11 Thread Steve Conrad
Question...

My 240M APS external HD is giving me a problem and since its attached to my
IIci I thought I'd come to you folks.
Last night it worked just fine but this afternoon I noticed the red light
blinking off-n-on so I thought I'd better see whats up.
Basically it locks up the machine from time to time. I ran Nortonno
problems (it said it was loading the driver is all, no other messages). I
ran Disinfectant 3.7.1 and again no problems. I ran Norton and Disinfectant
on all my drives and had no issues. I ran Silverlining Pro and the drive
passed the tests it ran with no problems. I even had it update the driver
and I put the Silverlining Pro CP into the CP folder. The drive STILL has
issues with freezing up my machine periodically (when its turned on and I
look at the desktop, like when saving an article, I cannot see my 3
Bernoulli disks yet when I shut it off and reboot the Bernoulli disks are
there). Any ideas?

Yes, when I get my 9 Gig HD up and running I am planning to back up the
240M (it does sometimes run ok thus I am willing to try this option) onto
it and go the Nuke Pave route with the APS Powertools that I have (sadly
my most current copy is on that 240M HD but I can always DL it I am sure if
need be).

Thanks!!

Re: Boat-load fulla 32mb 72-Pins Simms

2003-03-30 Thread Steve Conrad
OK,
I have a quandry that is driving me nuts. I hope you can help me to figure
this out.
Here is the problem. I have a 20M HS (external) that I had on my SCSI chain
at one time. After awhile it began to slow down my system so I ran Norton
and Disinfectant on it. Disinfectant found an ancient virus and killed it
(I then ran it on my machine and the rest of the SCSI chain and then on the
20M HD again and all were clean). For awhile all was well but then that 20M
HD began acting up (Norton and Disinfectant found no problems) so I took it
off the SCSI chain and things returned to normal. Well, tonight I thought I
would try to recover all the stuff off the 20M HD (onto a 44M Bernoulli
disk) and then I'd nuke and pave it so I could use it again. Well, it shows
up with SCSIProbe 4.3 but I cannot mount the drive onto the desktop. The
message I get is that its not readable and do I wish to format the HD.
Any ideas?

If you have Norton Disk Doctor, try running it (or some other disk repair

How can I do that when I cannot Mount the HD? Norton only sees that which

I mean, as many people as I hear make the suggestion to turn that
antique Mac into an FTP server, you'd think there would be plenty of
solutions that don't require a non-standard OS- or at least ONE...

There's always NCSA Telnet. It's not a very robust or buff FTP server,
but it works and it doesn't cost anything.

There were improvements over NCSA Telnet made and released, those being
ANSI Telnet and, the one I use, Better Telnet.

Question For You All

2003-03-23 Thread Steve Conrad
Its Mystery Motherboard Time!
(Also sent to the Quad list just in case)

OK, was going through my Mac stuff and I came across this MB I want to ID.

It has what I believe to be a 68040 CPU (as I said, its a guess here as the
chip has some thingie on top of it thats kinda like a square of prongs
pointing upwards).

The board just says this for an ID: 820-0380-A Apple Computer, Inc. C. 1992

It has 2 slots (72 pin?) for Video Ram SIMMS, 3 expansion slots (one has a
Modem Mac II card in it), 4 DRAM SIMM connector slots and a black slot
(J18) that has no ID marks, and the usual floppy connector and SCSI
connector.

What are the two white connectors (J17 and J11) used for? Also, what is J8
used for (its on the back)?

Thanks for the help!! :)

No, and I doubt it'll ever happen. They've been claiming it was on its way

Not that I have any faith in their ability to write a Mac browser any more,

Too bad MacWeb was abandoned. It wasn't a bad little browser and it got
better with each new release (I have 3 of the releases). I also tried
Mozilla (some of the older versions that were out when NS was still young).
They too crash the machine (this is about 50/50 as for some of my friends
it crashes their machine while for others it works flawlessly).

There's a project, though I haven't a clue of its progress, to get the MacWWW
code updated for modern browsing and written in 68K assembly for best
performance.

Marten was heading that up on the System 6 list, but I haven't heard anything

iCab is far and away the best browser there is for 68Ks in most circumstances,
though. Nothing else comes anywhere close. Not MacWeb (which hasn't worked
reliably since about 1997), not Netscape (too RAM-hungry and buggy), not IE (a
piece of crap until version 5, which was PPC-only).

Re: Update on Performa 450

2003-03-17 Thread Steve Conrad
Since MultiFinder is from System 6 there's no reason to expect that it
would work with System 7.
Get a legtimate 7.1 boot disk and add System Enabler 308 v1.0 to it.
The Performa 450 needs that enabler to run 7.1.
The enabler can be found at;
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/enablers.html.

If you need more space on the disk then replace Apple's Finder with a
minifinder.
More about those can be found here:
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/sys7boot.html, about halfway down.

Or boot from a System 7.5 floppy, no enabler needed, but there's less space
on the disk.

Gamba
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2

On the HD it has 7.6.1
I moved EVERY Ext. into the DISABLED folder and rebooted
It STILL suggested I try it with the Extensions Disabled.
Any suggestion?

Update on Performa 450

2003-03-15 Thread Steve Conrad
Got it to boot as I said earlier.
Ran Disk First Aid 7.2.2
Found a small issue and repaired it.
Then I DISABLED Every Extention and rebooted.
Got an error (-42 IIRC) and it said to reboot and try it with the
Extensions Disabled (as you can see I had Disabled them already).
So, I made a new boot disk (wanted to try Norton and maybe Disinfectant)
using System 7.1 (suitcase) and MultiFinder (1.0 off of my SE). This gets
me to the nice rectangle which just shimmers (it never gets beyond that
part).

I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Re: Can't see LCs- woe is me

2003-03-14 Thread Steve Conrad
Nothing, but since it's the only way to install an FPU
into the LC short of soldering in a socket where
Apple originally intended to put one, (Or is that only
the LCII?) that's where the FPU has to go if you
run any apps that need one. Same story for the IIsi,
no FPU and no place to even solder a socket, so the
IIsi NuBus adaptor and many other IIsi PDS cards
often included an FPU.

Re: Question

2003-03-14 Thread Steve Conrad
Ok, next question

While trying to revive the USS Jenolen (one of my IIsi's.which is now
all set to go) I was trying to see which other HDs I have that I could pop
into other machines. Every other HD can be attached to the IIsi (none come
up when I start it up) except this one HD. Its a Seagate Model ST 35 I A/X
(so it would appear), SN 2018999.
Another sticker with a barcode has this: 913001-048

For some reason I cannot use it insiode the IIsi (cannot connect it
physically).
Why would this be? I was told when I got it that its a SCSI HD.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Question

2003-03-14 Thread Steve Conrad
OK, I just had this happen

Funny thing
I have a isk (SCSI Utility 7.3.one of a series, just cannot find the
others) and it seems to have problems. Norton only says that SCSI Utility is
bad. Disk First AId (7.2.b and 7.2.2) see no problems with the disk. So I
thought I'd copy the stuff to another disk (on the chance this one is just old)
and that would be that. However, I can ONLY copy the System suitcase to my HD.
Everything else cannot be copied (I get this: The file insert name of it here
couldn't be read, because a disk error occurred. Do you want to continue
copying?)

I am thinking the disk is hosed.
So, where do I get more copies of the CMS SCSI Utility disks?

Speaking of FPU's I was wondering how a 68881 and a 68882 differed.
From a list of Macs that I have it appears that only the II came with the

Speaking of disks..where can I get the stuff I need to erase Bernoulli
disks (I use 44M disks)? Right now I have to go the circular route (I pop
them in and format them for a PC then for a Mac (try just doing Mac and it
won't let you)). Now I know they come to me formatted for a PC but this is
the only way I can use the Erase Disk option on this IIci.
I called the company who bought the Bernoulli stuff from Iomega (I forget
their name offhand) and the guy there promised to email the program but he
never has.

Thanks for any help!

PSI never knew they made 20M Bernoulli disks but apparently the
original Bernoulli machines used those. Later they used the 44M disks.

Re: re LCIII and memory

2003-02-23 Thread Steve Conrad
Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 01:22:07 -0800 (PST)
From: Gregg Eshelman [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The LCIII was the first non Road Apple LC. Pretty
much not crippled except for only having one SIMM
slot. If you put some card in the PDS, try and get
one with a 68882 FPU onboard. Unfortunately some
types of LC PDS cards were never made in a model with
an FPU. Lots of LC network cards had an FPU. A good
upgrade for speed is a 40 or 50Mhz DayStar 030
PowerCache (with FPU too) but you also have to find
the LC adapter card and there's the problem of using
the only expansion slot.

The adapter for the LCIII and the adapter for the LC, LCII, and Color
classic are different adapters. I have several of the LC, LCII, and
CC adapters for the PowerCache in case anyone is interested.

Jeff Walther

- Does it work in the LCIII+ as well?
Also, what would it take to get those for my LC Performa 405?

OK, since no one else had any suggestion (besides Pickle) I shall try again

I tried to use the System Suitcase from the Disk Tools (Disk 6 of 6, none
of the others I have (2-5) have a System Suitcase/Folder) from System 7.0.1
to make a start-up disk for some of my older Macs. So far its a no go.
Any ideas why this is failing?

Define 'older Macs'. For that matter they aren't even compatible with
sysem 7.01
Are you sure this Disk Tools disk is alright to begin with?

Marten

- One is an SE that says it has been made into a Turbo SE (there is a
sticker on the front). The other I had tried was a Plus I was told had been
upgraded by the previous owner (as I have no Torx screwdriver I cannot
verify this and so will from now on consider it just an ordinary Plus until
proven otherwise).

The disks came from a friend who used to work on computers until he joined
the Navy. He had worked on my Macs several times and when he left I got all
of his Mac stuff.

Now, I would DL System 6 but the floppy drive in this IIci is acting up and
pulling it and replacing it is not on my list of favorite activities.

Re: not a newbie btw.

2003-02-07 Thread Steve Conrad
OK, since no one else had any suggestion (besides Pickle) I shall try again

I tried to use the System Suitcase from the Disk Tools (Disk 6 of 6, none
of the others I have (2-5) have a System Suitcase/Folder) from System 7.0.1
to make a start-up disk for some of my older Macs. So far its a no go.
Any ideas why this is failing?

Pickle - if you want to make an environmental statement, it seems to me

25 Watts.

Guilty as charged! At the moment I have turned on in my room:
- A IIci w/a Macintosh Color Display
- Bernoulli Dual w/two disks in it
- Bernoulli Transportable w/disk
- APS external HD
- another external HD
- PowerMac 5260/100
- WebTV Plus (not conected to the Net/Web)
- VCR (no, I am not watching a movie right now nor do I have cable)
- 19 Color TV (connected to the WebTV Plus and VCR)
- an old 12 color TV (it has the One Touch Color button!)
- Cordless Phone w/base
- Answering Machine
- the light I have clipped near the ceiling

I am sitting here looking at two System suitcases and I have a question

System 7.0.1 - 910K
System 7.1 - 715K

Why is the older System suitcase bigger?

Also, (pardon this vent)
That Pissant! The SE FDHD I was given (and I was told it worked) has NO

My Machines

2003-02-04 Thread Steve Conrad
Hello!
After an absence due to several factors I have returned!
I have missed this list with its inciteful people who hold a wealth of
knowledge. :)
Below is my list of computers.

Mac 512K (2 working models and 1 case with just the screen)*
Plus (3 working models I know of, at least 3 non-working that need checking)*
SE - USS Reliant
SE HDFD (not working yet, need to make boot disk)
LC - USS Oberth
Performa 405 - USS Voyager
IIcx (not working at this time)
IIsi (not working currently due to lack of an HD)
IIci - Utopia Planetia (my main machine, ie the one I am on now)
Quadra 605 (not currently working, needs to have an HD and RAM installed)
Performa 450 (not currently working, needs an HD instlled and RAM)
PowerMac 5260/100 - Starfleet HQ

* Named after Shuttles
* Named after Runabouts

Hooked up to the IIci are the following:
Bernoulli Dual, Bernoulli Transportable (disks are named after Runabouts
and the larger shuttles. So far I have the USS Yangtzee Kiang, USS Ganges,
USS Rubicon, USS Goddard and USS Feynman), DS9 (an APS HD) and USS Defiant.

Not currently hooked up: USS Yorktown, USS Miranda and UFPF Challenger (an
old Apple 20M that needs a new cable), my Bernoulli Box II

Hopefully when Spring break rolls around I can get more of these babies up
and running. :)

Question

2001-10-28 Thread Steve Conrad

Question

I have an ancient Rodime HD that decided that with 13+ Meg left on it it
woudn't let me put more stuff on the HD. After several tries I went the Nuke
and Pave route with APS PowerTools. While the HD shows up on the SCSI Bus it
won't mount on the desktop. Every try gets an error saying it cannot find the
driver in sector (I think this is right) 0. Also, it said it would take 10
minutes to format the HD but it took under 2 minutes for it to declare that
it was done. I also tried to initialize the HD with no luck. Now I did save
all the stuff off the HD before I tried this route. NO, I don't wanna scrap
the HD as it mounted fine before and outta all my spare HDs its the only
one that is not acting like a pain (the rest are far worse and I don't have
another machine set up to let me play with them at this time). APS is now
part of LaCie and they are totally useless (I called Tech Support at my
expense as they ditched their 1-800 number when LaCie bought them and moved
them from Kansas City to the state of
Washington).

Ideas?

PS...The machine in question is my IIci (7.5.5, 32M RAM, 400+ M HD). The
other 2 external HDs work fine.

PPS...APS says that they no longer support any version of their PowerTools
below 5.something (PowerMacs only) and that all data on older versions has
been lost, including what errors mean.

Re: Shameless site promotion

2001-10-05 Thread Steve Conrad

Its good to see you can cover both ends of the spectrum.
How many PC models were made (just curious)

In an effort to help those people get the most out of their PCs, we've
launched Low End PC as a sister site to Low End Mac. PC users tell me
there's really nothing like LEM for the Wintel world, so we'll see where
it goes.

Low End PC is a bit different from Low End Mac. There's no way we can
offer profiles of all the PCs made, so we won't even try. We'll be
offering upgrade advice (like try Linux) and have writers familiar with
Windows, Linux, and BeOS.

If you're a part-time PC user or know PC users who might find such a site
helpful, please refer them to http://lowendpc.com/. It may help them
become better computer users.

Re: Shameless site promotion

2001-10-05 Thread Steve Conrad

And of course we also have Micron and ATT making machines.
I believe Laser also made some PCs
And good ol Univac/Unisys and Commodore

Oww
Now my head hurts!! :P

Welll, to start with, IBM created the 5150 PC, and
it was good. :) They followed up with the XT, then
the AT. Compaq beat IBM to the punch with the first
386. After that, the PC market exploded with hundreds
of system integrators making their own branded
boxes. Then the components companies got the idea
to sell to absolutely anyone so they could build
their own custom PC clone.

From there on, it is impossible to create a
comprehensive list. The big companies like
Packard Bell, Compaq, HP, Dell and Gateway all
adopted an Apple Performa like scheme of giving
the same basic computer different names or numbers
based on the base configuration of CPU, RAM,
hard drive, CD-ROM or not and the software bundle.

So to answer your question, pick a number, any
number. That number is most likely too small.

Called my ISP and asked again about the mail server (Lost connection to

They said they called Qualcomm and they said they are getting lots ofthose

Looks like Eudora wants all usage of older versions to cease which means no

Re: Slots in LC III

2001-09-02 Thread Steve Conrad

OK, the LCIII is listed as having One RAM slot and 4M built in (this list
doesn't say Performa 450 so I assume its the same physically)

The Q605 also has One RAM slot (as per this list)

Now a fresh question. Why does it say the LCII (Performa 405) cannot have
an FPU (not even listed as an option) yet I have read that you can stick
one in the PDS slot (68882)? Also, the LC doesn't have one listed as an
option yet I read that you can stick one in the PDS slot (68881).

Does Apple just want the older Macs, Apples and varied clones to just die
off so we will all be forced to buy brand spanking new G4's?
They seem to stomp on anyone who runs a site supporting older machines

My proof? Fire up Anarchie and see how many of those sites are Empty or
simply No Longer Exist (At last count.11 Empty, 3 with No Mac Stuff
Anymore, 1 Name Server Didn't Exist, 1 is nothing but Endless Empty
Folders, 1 has No Anon Function (yet my email address and info is in my

Re: Musings

2001-08-22 Thread Steve Conrad

I have several versions of Anarchie (and Fetch and TurboGopher, etc) and I
know that some of the schools have said that the reason they pulled down
their archives was due to pressure from Apple and fees involved in their
maintaining them. UIowa said this was why Liquify (used to be Panda and
then it was Grind) was taken down.

That's not proof. I hate to sound argumentative, but Anarchie was last
distributed in the late 1990s, and IIRC, the version you have is from about
'97 or so. I challenge you to find more than about six-of-25 of ANY kind
of Mac-oriented server that have been around since then and were big enough
then to get noticed.

Info-Mac has moved since then. A lot of the Info-Mac mirrors have
disappeared. Pacific Hi-Tech no longer distributes the CD collections of
the Info-Mac archive that they used to. MacUser is defunct in the US.
MacWeek is dead.

Broadband 'net access has killed a lot of that sort of thing and moved a
lot more of it to less-obvious places, like Hotline (which was essentially
nothing in 1997) and its variants and Gnutella (which didn't even exist
until last year).

Somehow I don't think Apple has much (if anything) to do with that
disappearance, except for the obvious cases like with the Mac 512 User
Group being prohibited from distributing older OSes any more.

Interestingmy ISP says that unless you are running Eudora 5+ or running
the latest and greatest there is no support for you as older stuff is
simply not supported. Now I am on a IIci running 7.5.5, 32M RAM and I use
Eudora Light 3.1.3, the last one that will run on an 030. My ISP says I
should be using Outlook as they support all versions of it (funny, they
must have a deal with M$). Also, I am leaing that Macs are not really
supported at any ISP in this area as they ays assume I am on a PC and when
I mention its a Mac they have to go find an employee that knows Macs.

Re: My ISP

2001-08-20 Thread Steve Conrad

I just spoke with my ISP on the phone and they said, again, that anything
less than Eudora 5+ will have problems UNLESS you decide to forgo Eudora
and to use Outlook.

I got all the settings figured out and It worked with my last ISP (a whole
passel of problems unto itself), but with this one you cannot click to send
mail then pull something else to the forfront because you will get a
message saying that you lost connection to the mail server (my last ISP
NEVER had these problems). You sometimes have to endure a VERY slow
download of anything but small text messages (NEVER had this problem before
and I shouldn't as the user to modem ratio is kept under 10-1 to avoid
these problems). Even the dial-up is a local number (my last one wasn't and
I had to pay a fee to have it act as a local number).

Ideas?

Re: 64MB SIMMs

Or donate to a not for profit organization and take a tax write off.
However, if you can get the RAM really cheaply then go for it and make it
into a server (FTP perhaps) or a print spooler or a firewall.
Of course were a friend to offer me one I'd take it to add to my collection.

Is the max RAM for a Performa 6214CD (such a well-known model, I know...)
64MB, orcan it take 128MB? Thought with the cost of 64MB 70-pin SIMMs, I
suppose it would hardly be worth it...

It is not worth it. Throw into street now, or give it to your worst
enemy as a truce present. Horrid, horrid machines. We have several sitting
in the bunker here (the old computer graveyard) and no one liked them
when they were new, much less now. They do break down nicely, though, like
in trash compactors and steam presses. Good stress relievers.

I see some I am unfamiliar with and my reference books do not mention them

I came into the Apple fold running System 7. I upgraded every time
one was offered, 7.1,7.2,7.3,7.5,7.55,7.6, 8, 8.1, 8.6. Pardon if I
missed any. I remember 7.3 being the worst.

I don't recognize 7.2 and 7.3
