I saw the vendor has ps/2 to adb converters, but they are Eur 70 the set.
They also can connect Sparcs etc to it, same pricerange.

I have the above 4 computer version found mint on eBay for around $50 or so
with full cables sets. As you can see they are a bit expensive new, but used
ones are affordable and worth it for space and convenience.

Hi
I'm using a standard data switch box to swap between my Starmax, PM8500,
and a windoze PII, the Pentium II has it's own keyboard and mouse.
They all share a non Mac monitor, and I just swap the cables from each Mac
to the one keyboard.
Tried an S video switch box to do the keyboard but it kept restarting the
Macs that wern't switched on!!

Hope this helps

I have been using one for about six months to switch a single
keyboard/mouse combination between two SE/30's, so obviously I am not
using the 'V' portions of the switch. For video it includes both DB15
and HD15 connectors. However, for my specific application, this KVM has
worked very well.

Keyboard and Mouse sharing MoniSwitch 2/ADB

* Share a single ADB keyboard, ADB mouse, and monitor between two
Macintosh computers with ADB ports

* Compatible with all Macintosh computers and their clones with an
ADB port (including older and newer blue-and-white G3 models) and
without a private, built-in keyboard or mouse (PowerBooks, including Duo
models, typically have a private built-in keyboard and
trackball/trackpad) With these portable Macs and other, similar

You could just go somewhere like mouser.com and buy
the DB-15 connectors and shielded hoods then practice
your soldering and convert standard HD-15 video
extention cables. :)

I've soldered quite a few connectors for monitors and
other peripherals. Many were converting monitors
to removable cables when a wire would break in the
cable just before entering the monitor. Chop off a
few inches and do some cutting on the plastic to
mount a connector in the back of the monitor.

A digital multimeter and a grounded, 15 watt soldering
iron with a really small tip are essential tools
for any electronics dabbler. :)

They were, but new ones haven't been made for years.
Once the Blue and White G3 came out, the manufacture
of ADB peripherals stopped almost instantly.

Yes, I own one that's good for 3 Macs (i.e., an ABC switch).
[rant]
The annoying part for the one I have is that for some
incomprehensible reason it assumes you have DB15-to-DB15 monitor
cables to connect your Macs to the KVM switch. It's a ridiculous
assumption, not only because so many Mac users use monitors with
regular VGA connectors but also because the monitors that *do* have
DB15 connectors instead of VGA usually possess their cables
intrinsically, i.e., you don't own the cables, the monitor itself
does, the monitor end of it doesn't detach. So you either have to
shop around for the rare decent-quality fully-shielded DB15-to-DB15
cable or else buy VGA adapters (one each for the three DB15 ports on
the KVM, plus one each for every Mac old enough to actually have a
DB15 monitor connector, which means up to six if you're hooking three
relatively elderly Macs to this thing).

Nope, but I've never really needed to use anything keyboard-wise. I mainly
use VNC for monitoring my servers.

Hi Erik. VNC on PCs and Linux (& other Unix) boxes is great, but for
Macs, I find it lacking. The big problem is its lack of Command-key
support. Technically the protocol DOES support those keys, but I have

You could also give VNC (Virtual Network Computing)
a try. Basically it's a multi-platform graphical
host side terminal server and client side viewer.

You can install the server then use any of the
available viewer clients (which are standalone and
require no installation) to operate the computer
running the server remotely.

What VNC does not do is file transfer. For that you
can remotely operate e-mail, FTP, web browsers etc.
I'm pretty certain it does support copying and pasting
text between most servers and viewers. (Haven't
used it in a while.)

But best of all is that VNC is FREE! :)

Re: KVM Switch Recommendations

2002-06-01 Thread Robert Hutchins

I've seen them on ebay recently. Search for KVM.

Dev Depot still sells new Dr. Bott ADB KVM switchs. 2port for $137.95. 4 port
for $189.
http://www.devdepot.com/description.html?PCODE=HMS

I recently put a Wanted post on the LEM Swap list for an ADB KVM switch. I got
several *very* reasonable offers, and bought one of them. It hasn't arrived yet.

Meanwhile...

>From http://www.megamacs.com I bought not-the-latest-version of Timbuktu for
$29.99. Timbuktu allows you to use the keyboard, mouse and monitor on one
machine (Mac or PC) to control another machine (Mac or PC) over just about any
connection you can think of. I've already used it over ethernet (wired and
wireless) and phone-net. It also works modem-to-modem or over the Internet. The
software also has file transfer/sharing, messaging, chat and intercom features.
It's easy to use and avoids the tangle of cables.

Included for the price above are two CDs with both Mac and PC versions of the
software. The Mac version is 5.2.3. A free upgrade to 5.2.4 is available at:
http://www.netopia.com/en-us/software/products/tb2/mac/tb2macupgrade2.html
which brings it up to system 9.1 compatability.

Also included is version 4.0.6 for use on pre system 8.1 Macs. I loaded that on
a Powerbook 5300 running system 7.6. I can control it remotely, but when I run
the Timbuktu application locally on the Powerbook it freezes.

Mostly I'm using Timbuktu so that my 8500 (my day to day machine) can control a
headless (no K,V or M attached) 7500 that is running X-10 home automation
software (yeah, I'm a geek). It works flawlessly for this.

NOTE: The headless 7500 had to be fooled into thinking there was a monitor
attached by connecting a Mac to VGA adaptor. A number of these have been listed
recently on the swap list for under ten bucks. I couldn't wait, so I spent $30
for a new one locally.

Timbuktu has been around for ages, since pre-PPC, so you should be able to run
it on the machines you listed. You can check on the Netopia web site to be sure:

http://www.netopia.com

OK... to keep this on topic: My next step is to network in my SE and my
128k-turned-512k-turned-plus as home automation terminals. What fun!

BTW: When it arrives I'll probably be selling the KVM switch that I just bought.
Interested?

Going to be tough to find one now that supports ADB
