Re: Mac 128/512 Amber Rare/Mint !

2002-07-18 Thread Michaels

OKay, wait a moment, has anyone seen the last Flubber movie with Robin
Williams? In the movie there are two compact macs shown, they are 128, or
512 compacts. Anyway, one has a blue screen, the one shown in the basement,
and one has an Amber screen, the one shown in the kitchen, Also, you can
tell that they are Working compacts.
Also most of the old 128 logo pictures show blue screen CRT's, the first
Mac TV commercial I remember, was a Blue screen Compact saying hello.

Could some of these strange color CRTs in Compacts, be just working movie
props ???
Think about it, an old B/W screened computer looks bad on TV, not to mention
the setup time for a color PC system. When all the prop guy has to do is
plug in a Amber Compact, and turn it on, with the startup folder full of
what ever needs to be seen on the screen, no muss no fuss, go to the next
thing on the 'To Do List'.It is another possibility.
  Dan M.

I've seen several pics of early 128K Macs where the
screen has a very blue tint, then later ones are
  pure white and black.

That's probably more a fault of the photography than anything else.

I can think of two other possibilities. It may actually be an 9 amber
CRT substituted for the BW (I think this very unlikely) More likely,
it is a coating on the monitor surface. If you were going to create a

The guy selling it says the screen really is an amber one. While I'm
quite
aware of replacement CRTs (someone actually documented the replacement
with
a green CRT about three years back), I highly doubt someone trying to fake
it would have put an amber coating on the screen.

It may or may not be legit*. I'm leaning toward not.

I suspect the case has been replaced - all the internals are those from a
512e - and as such, I can't verify the authenticity of anything inside it.
The Not for sale stickers are likely a set-up to make it seem more
authentic. Even the case may have been tampered with; the 43d week of 1984
would have seen very very few 128s, if any, being produced since the 512
had been introduced at that point and would have been in full production
for quite some time prior.

*I don't blame this seller for the possible fraud; he bought what he bought
from a seller I suspect far more of suspicious activity. He's probably
just trying to get his money back, which was about $250, IIRC.

Monochrome CRTs only have one color phosphor coating
on the inside of the tube. No shadow mask either.

Different phosphors give off different colors of
light when hit by high energy electrons in a CRT.
Could be that some company or government specified
that computers they purchased had to have amber
color monitors so Apple obliged. (Though I bet they
aren't pleasant to use.)
