what was the accessible weather app that gives weather warnings?

2012-06-07 Thread Christina
Hi,

I can't remember the name of the app I saw on viPhone a long time ago. It was
an accessible weather app that gives some kind of warning/alert if there is
severe or serious weather like tornados and such. Also, is it a good app or
does it give false alarms?

Thanks,
Christina C.

Re: Domino train

2012-06-07 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Sometimes you need to do a three-finger flick to get to the end of the train
before placing the domino. I think you flick up, but it's been a while since I
played, so I might not remember correctly. Try flicking down with 3 fingers if
flicking up doesn't do the trick.

Re: ONETOUCH VOICE MEMO RECORDER VERSUS SMART RECORD DE

2012-06-07 Thread Dan
Hello,
Smart Record is an app that allows for editing of the audio file. It also has
many different file settings options for quality and the quality of particular
forms of sending. Such as E-Mail, FaceBook, Wi-FI and other methods and each
one's quality settings.
This quite an interesting app in terms of its editing capabilities and the
smoothness of the editing is really fantastic.
At present I don't have the app on any of my iOS devices, but I probably will
put it back on at some point.

Groundwire Slow Data Entry

2012-06-07 Thread Joe
Hi, is it just me, or is entering data into the Groundwire app
excruciatingly slow? It's worse than entering data through my Bluetooth
earpiece, as there is a delay between key press and recognition. Is anyone
else experiencing this, or might there be something I don't have configured
correctly in the app? Thanks in advance for any help.--Joe

Data plans and what works for me in Canada

2012-06-07 Thread Sieghard
Hi Ryan, Raul and Christopher,

As Raul pointed out, they force you to take a data plan if you are on
contract, but nobody says you can't go out and either buy a used older
phone or to go and pay $850 and pay full price for an unlocked iPhone
4S 64 Gig if you want. In fact, if you have an old iPhone 3GS and
upgraded to a 4S, you can officially unlock your iPhone 3GS, just call
AT&T and they will email you the instructions. Once it is unlocked,
you could even put an AT&T prepaid Go Card in it, of course data won't
work on the phone, but you can definitely use it as just an accessible
cell phone for making voice calls, sending text messages and do
whatever you like when you are on WiFi. When I bought my first iPhone
4 here in Canada my contract had run out and I decided to not get
another one so I bought an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple, put in a SIM
and activated it with just a regular cell plan without any data. I did
turn cellular data off in order to avoid accidently using it and being
charged by the Megabyte or whatever ridiculous small unit they use,
but nobody can force you to have a data plan if you don't take
advantage of a contract to get the phone cheap. After all, AT&T does
give you a $550 subsidy on a 64 Gig iPhone 4S and over 2 years that
means just under $23 a months so I guess that's why they force you to
buy a $25 data plan (or more). I sure wish the North American
providers (Canada as well as the US) would smarten up and offer more
flexible prepaid plans so that anybody who wants could buy an iPhone
or other fancy smartphone even if they only use it a bit. I, only use
maybe 100 to 300 Megs of data a months and maybe a bit more if I am
travelling more, but why should I pay for 1 or 2 Meg of data if I
never use them. On the other hand my iPhone is also my main home phone
and I have a business so I do make quite a lot of voice calls.
Fortunately we have Koodo in Canada and for $55 a month I get
unlimited Canada wide long distance and air time as well as voice
mail, call display and unlimited texting (it is actually $45 for the
calling and $10 for the VM, call display and texting). Then I pay $5 a
months for 30 Meg of data, that I pay whether I use any data or not.
If I am over 30 Meg and below 100 Meg I pay $10, 101 to 300 Meg it is
$15 and 301 to 500 is it $20. Between 501 and 1 Gig it is $25 and if
you frequently use that much you can go with a $25 flat rate and get 2
Gig for that. I mostly have $10 or $15 data charges on top of my $55,
so $65 or $70 and I can make a call anytime I want and never have to
worry about paying extra for it. I thought I share this for those
other Canadians out there who are with Telus, Bell or Rogers. Kooodo
is actually owned by Telus anyways, but it still is a lot cheaper
especially if you make a lot of phone calls and since it uses the
exact same network there is no drawback regarding reception.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Layout for Hidden Country Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard [was Re:
bluetooth miny keyboard]

Hi Jenifer,

Your question about the layout of the Hidden Country Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard
prompted me to search the viphone list archives, since I recall that Geoff
Waaler posted the layout for this keyboard. You did, indeed, order a Hidden
Country keyboard, since I found that post first. First, I'll just state
that if you've managed to pair your Bluetooth keyboard, you can always find
out what the keys are by turning on keyboard help mode. Even if you don't
know where your Control and Option (or Alt) keys are located, in order to
press Control-Option-K to enter this mode, where you'll be told each key and
its action by VoiceOver when you press that key or key combination, or even
if your keyboard does not have a Control or Option key, it is possible to
enter this mode by using the touch screen to navigate to the VoiceOver
Practice gestures area in Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver
while the keyboard is paired. This has the same effect as entering keyboard
help mode with Control-Option-K, and you can leave keyboard help mode by
navigating away from the VoiceOver Practice area using touch screen gestures
instead of pressing the "escape" key to end this mode.

I'll paste in Geoff's post giving the layout of the Bear Motion Bluetooth
Mini-Keyboard, which I've copied from the Google Groups web page for the
viphone list. I believe this is the brand that you ordered from Hidden
Country (or shop.hidcountry, com) at the time, because they were also
supplying this keyboard through Amazon. According to my hazy recollection,
Geoff ordered this from Amazon, and Andrea ordered hers from Hidden Country,
but the layout was the same. I also recall that Ricardo Walker much later
did a podcast on the Bear Motion Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard, which turned out
to be similar to the layout of the ThinkGeek TK-421 mini-keyboard that I
reviewed. If Geoff's description is relevant for your keyboard, which I
believe it is, then in order to access the arrow keys you need to press the
Fn key together with the a, s, d, or w key. Hopefully, any future searchers
will be able to quickly find this information through a Mail Archive search,
now that the viphone list has a secondary archive page at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/

Geoff's post with the keyboard info appears below my signature. He actually
describes the physical layout of the keyboard and where you can switch it
on, so this should be better than just giving you a map of keyboard function
combinations. Geoff uses "F" to indicate the Fn key in key press
combinations. There is both a left Fn key and a right Fn key on the bottom
row, so you can use either one in these combinations.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Greetings,

Esther's recent reference to the escape key reminded me that maybe I can
spare a few people the modicum of frustration I experienced locating this.
Its great that so many are generous with their time creating podcasts and
tutorials, but I'm sure there are many others who abhor time consuming
podcasts as much as I when concise instructions will suffice -- honestly
reading lists such as this one I often wonder how blind people ever managed
to use the bath room, pick their noses or put on clothing before the days
of podcasts lasting hours describing every solitary detail, but I digress.
I don't know about any other mini keyboards, so the following is only
necessarily applicable for the Bare Motion Mini bt keyboard. The link for
this product at the US Amazon site is:

http://www.amazon.com/Exclusive-offer-Bear-Motion-Smartphone/dp/B003T...
Assuming the space bar is toward you, the USB port (used for charging only)
is in front of the 3 and the power switch is in front of the 5. The left
position (toward the USB port) is power on.
The paring button is just above the 8 -- you'll notice a tiny recessed place
where you can put a finger nail if you don't bite them. To pair you'd power
the keyboard on and go into settings -> general -> bluetooth, and verify
that bluetooth is turned on. Remain in that window, and hold down the pair
button on the keyboard for a couple seconds. After a few moments the mini
keyboard will appear in your Bluetooth settings area. When you double tap,
a prompt is presented instructing you to enter a four digit number on the
keyboard, followed by the return key.
I observed that if I enter control+option+k I hear an announcement such as
"control", which verifies that keyboard help is indeed turned on. To have

RE: Anybody own the mophie juice pack?

2012-06-07 Thread Jerry Berrier
I have had one for about 6 months, and I'm very pleased with it. I also
bought a holster with belt clip specially made for the Mophie.
My only complaint is that it is not easy to get the phone out of the Mophie
once it's in. Not that I ever have much reason to take it out, but one time
I tried without success.
An interesting thing about it is that the bottom part pulls off, so if you
need to connect a regular iPhone cable to it, you just pull the bottom off
and that disables the Juicepack and exposes the port for connecting the
cable.

I would recommend a universaal keyboard.

You can use it to recharge any type of devise that has a usb input.

And, you can keep your same case.

Also, you will probably get more charges and more time out of it.

I've heard that too. However the data has remained off and we have been
fine so far for these last several months. I think they detect it if
your iPhone makes data calls.

Hello Arnold,

If the price of the data plan is the only thing keeping you from
getting
the iPhone you may want to consider asking for a waiver. AT ant T
allows Blind users in the US to fill out a application that allows for
certain services. One is free information. Another is exemption from

I am using the free information service. I did not use it often as I
preferred Bing 411. However, Bing 411 is ending at the end of june so
I'm glad I have the AT and T information option in place and ready to
use. It works very similar to the Bing 411 service, even the same

The application process is a bit tedious and takes time to complete

things one has to enter onto their phone itself, so one will have to
type on it very early in the game, as it were. As long as one feels

Hi All,

Over the past three days or so, my 4s has begun crashing, or rather VO
is crashing. The phone still seems to be on but there's no sound at
all -- no VO, no sound effects, nothing.

I've gotten sighted help each time to reboot the phone and it comes up
fine, but what may be causing this periodic crashing?

And what is the best way to deal with it? Should I restore the phone?
What kind of restore should I do? Could it be an app causing the
crashes?

This is a sudden and weird problem. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Mapquest4Mobile update, be careful

I just updated to the Mapquest4Mobile version dated today.

RE: NHL game center app

2012-06-07 Thread John Riehl
It would be helpful if people paid attention to e-mail threads. In NHL
Gamecenter, the Live feature enables you to watch TV of hockey games. You
have to pay for that. The radio streaming is free.

Hello,
As far as the Live games go you have to have an account at nhl.com
where you have to pay for that type of service.
I had it a few years back before losing my sight where I watched the NHL
games on my laptop. I am almost positive it is the save service an in 2008
was about $130 a year.
Hope this helps!

Re: NHL game center app

I don't know if it's just for the playoffs but I listened to a game
between Washington and New York through the app. I don't have an
NHL.com account and most definitely did not pay for it. As far as I
can tell, the option to listen exists -- you just have to double tap
on the game in question in the scores tab and then there'll be a
button for audio on the next page it brings you to.

the iphone will use wifi if it is available rather than mobile data.

if there is a connection to wifi, it will use that and only use 3g or
edge if wifi isn't available.

One thing that has me excited againabout getting one is the book,

am reading through it. I do recommend this book for new users.
According to it, one can set up their IPhone independently, so long as
they have ITunes on their computer, with One caveat. There are some
things one has to enter onto their phone itself, so one will have to
type on it very early in the game, as it were. As long as one feels
confident to do this typing, it can be set up independently.

All you need to do is search "google play books" on google (since it's
a service by google) and it's the the second result as well -- the one
that says "Books on Google Play."

Is the NHL app different from game center? I'm still pretty new to all

Lol!

Btw I'm rooting for the kings too. In my house they're known as the

This makes sense. In fact, this is what I did for my daughter. She has
an iPhone, but we don't pay for data plans. So, when she uses apps which
require data, she just uses it on wi-fi. All other times she can use it

He'd just have to wait until he had access to a wifi to use his smart
phone on the network. Does this make sense or am I forgetting something
critical here?

First, the following does not apply to the IPhone at all, one must buy a
data plan for the IPhone. Apparently, for the android phones, and
blackberries, one can apply for this exemption, but it does not mean one
can get free data. Under normal circumstances, one has to buy a minimum
data plan, even if they are not going to use it, just to get one of
these devices. This exemption will allow the device to be used for phone
calls, maybe texting (I am not sure about texting), but not for data,
meaning the web and email. I can't imagine why one would want a smart
phone if they weren't going to use it for the web and email, being that
now some companies are offering unlimited text and phone calls for cheap
prices, using a regular phone. Apparently, their data networks are
being overwhelmed by smart phones, and they want people to buy and use
the simple phones for texting and phone calls. Oh well, I hoped.

Hello Arnold,

If the price of the data plan is the only thing keeping you from getting
the iPhone you may want to consider asking for a waiver. AT ant T
allows Blind users in the US to fill out a application that allows for
certain services. One is free information. Another is exemption from
the data plan.
I don't know if other service providers have a option like this for
blind users.

I am using the free information service. I did not use it often as I
preferred Bing 411. However, Bing 411 is ending at the end of june so
I'm glad I have the AT and T information option in place and ready to
use. It works very similar to the Bing 411 service, even the same voice,
but an operator takes over if there is a need.

The application process is a bit tedious and takes time to complete and
requires a doctor's portion to be completed.

I think the phone number to call AT And T for a application is: 1 866
241 6568

pay that hundred dollars a month after month, after month after month
to the phone carrier. However, I know I would love my IPhone and would
probably not mind that charge too much, considering the benefits to me.

One thing that has me excited againabout getting one is the book,
published by National Braille Press. Getting Started with the iPhone
and iOs5 for Blind Users, by
Anna Dresner with Dean Martineau. I have purchased this book, and
am reading through it.

The link to the aforementioned book is
http://www.nap.org/ic/nap/IPHONE-IOS5.html
It is $22, and can be had in hardcopy braille, as a brf file, or as a
daisy audio file, read by a pretty good synthesizer, I do not know
which one.

Re: Help! Taking a picture of your face with IOS5:

2012-06-07 Thread Sieghard
Hi Don,

I believe Voiceover only announces if there is a face if you have
"Always" selected in "Settings", "General", "Accessibility"
"Voiceover" and "Navigate Images". Mine was set to "With Descriptions"
and Voiceover would neve rsay anything so last night I changed it and
it then told me I had a face when I pointed the camera at myself. I
think this feature needs a bit of work, I had the phone about a foot
away from my face and Voiceover at first said "Large Face, face
centered", then without me moving the phone as much as half an inch it
immediately went on to say "No face", then it said "
Small face" and so on. I found it hard to get consistancy and often
when it said "One face, large face" or "One face, small face" it would
immediately afterwards say also "No face. Maybe some others who have
used this more often can chime in with their experience. One thing I
am unsure about it what these 3 settings under "Navigate Images"
actually do, i.e. how they differ from each other. There is "Always",
"With Description" or "Never". At first I thought "With Description"
would have to be selected for this face detection thing to work.

I am also not sure what Cory means when he says it would allow the
camera to be closer to you if you use the front camera. I would not
recommend using the front camera, it is a 1 Megapixel camera and the
back camera on the 4S is an 8 Megapixel and I can't see how it can be
closer no matter which way around you hold it. It's not as if you have
to reach around to tap the "Take Picture" button, just use the volume
up key if you want to take a picture of yourself and here it doesn't
really matter whether it is on the left side if the front camera is
facing you or on the right side if you turn the phone around to use
the better camera.

Sieghard

You could also buy a cheap older iPhone model to get the feel for the phone

Re: best price for the iPhone 4S

2012-06-07 Thread Sieghard
Hi List,

My apologies if I am posting this twice, but I think the first time I
accidently had clicked on "Reply to Author" and sent this only to Liz.

Anyhow, I will make this short. Liz mentions an iPhone 4S 8 Gig for
$149 from Radio Shack. This must have been a misunderstanding since
the only 8 Gig iPhones you can get are the 3GS and the 4. Once the 4S
came out Apple sold off all remaining stock of the iPhone 4 16 and 32
Gig, the 8 Gig was introduced as a less expensive option for people
who don't want to spend $199 for a 16 Gig 4S. The contract price for
an iPhone 4 8 Gig is $99 as per Apple's website and I have heard that
some places even offered it for $49 as a opromotion. Why somebody
would want to save $100 and buy an iPhone 4 8 Gig is beyond me because
not only will those $100 get you double the storage, but you also get
the much improved 8 MP camera on the 4S, a faster processor and, of
course, SIRI which alone would be worth $100 to me.

As far as the resale value of old phones is concerned, keep in mind
that if you havce a 3GS which is now off-contract because you had it
for 2 years and upgraded to a 4S, you can call AT&T and request to
have the 3GS unlocked. From user feedback on the "Today in iOS"
Podcast this apprently works very smoothly now, people who call in
receive an email with instructions on how to unlock their old 3GS
within a few hours and after you do this you have a phone you can
either continue to use on a prepaid plan and as an iPod or you can
sell it and get more money for it since it is now unlocked.

The Today in iOS podcast by the way is very informative and everybody
who is interested in keeping up with what is going on in the iOS,
iDevice and app world should listen to it. It is a weekly podcast, Rob
who does the Podcast also provides many articles and detailed
jailbreak instructions on his website and is usually very up on Apple
news and his predictions as to new devices are well researched and in
the case of the 4S were almost all correct.

Take care,
Sieghard

the video available from the camera roll so you can copy it out without
using iTunes. It also has the advantage of you being able to make
audio-only recordings for uploading to youtube.

No fussing around. Second, the app records the audio in a video file with no
video. So, think of it like taking a video from the camera app, but only the
sound is recorded. This has the advantage of making the video available from
the camera roll so you can copy it out without using iTunes. It also has the
advantage of you being able to make audio-only recordings for uploading to

Re: best price for the iPhone 4S

2012-06-07 Thread Sieghard
Hi Elizabeth,

You say "Radioshack had a special on upgrading to the iPhone 4S for
$149 for the 8-gig model and $199 for the 16-gig phone."

I just checked on the Apple website to make sure I didn't have this
wrong, but I didn't. There is no 8 Gig iPhone 4S, so you are lucky you
didn't say "OK, I'll take the 8 Gig, you would have ended up with an
iPhone 4 and not a 4S and if Radio Shack sells them for $149 on
contract they are charging too much, the price with contract on the
Apple website is $99 for an 8 Gig iPhone 4.

When the 4S came out Apple sold off all existing stock of 16 and 32
Gig models of the iPhone 4 and now one can get an iPhone 4 8 Gig only
and it is for people who want an iPhone, but do not want to pay $199
for the smallest 4S which is the 16 Gig. For most people trying to
save $100 here for something they will own and use a lot for at least
2 years is of course silly considering that that $100 gets you double
the storage, a much improved camera and of course SIRI not to mention
that faster processor. I had heard that some places offered the iPhone
4 8 Gig for as low as $49 on contract at times, but the $99 is
standard as is the $199 fo the 16 Gig, the $299 for the 32 Gig and the
$399 for the 64 Gig.

When I upgraded t the 4S I had a black iPhone 4 32 Gig, it was only
about 6 months old since I had problems with the original one and had
received a new replacement just last summer so it was truely in
perfect condition including the battery. I sold it locally in our free
Bargain Finder for $475 Canadian (it was also unlocked which made it
easier). However, you can now officially request to have your iPhone
3GS and soon your iPhone 4 unlocked by your provider if your contract
has expired and you have upgraded to a new phone. All you have to do
is call AT&T and they will send you an email with instructions. Once
that is done it is of course easy to sell an old phone. It would be
interesting if as a blind person you could walk into an AT&T store
with your old off-contract phone and ask fi they would unlock it for
you. I am in Canada and don't know what these instructions contain and
how involved the process is, but from cllers who called in with their
feedback on the "Today in iOS" podcast is seems pretty straight
forward. Today in iOS, by the way, is an excellent Podcast for anybody
who is interested in iOS and iDevices, they review apps, ask technical
questions and, of course, participate in the rumour mill about new
features of the next phone although Rob who does the Podcast will not
indiscriminately repeat any junk if it appears completely out there
and his predictions a couple of months before the 4S was released
mostly were quite accurate.

Take care,
Sieghard

Re: Help! Taking a picture of your face with IOS5:

hello,
I always hold the camera about an arm's-length from my face.
Secondly you need to have enough light for the facial recognition to work.
I move the phone around until it says large face center.
I also use the Apple earbuds that came with the iPhone. The reason for this, is
I use the Volume up control
button on the headphones to activate the camera.

Yeh, this is my understanding as well, but did you mean the phone might
be a bit longer but also a bit wider to keep the same length to width ratio?

Where do you go to set the preferences to allow At Bat to send you alerts?
I couldn't find anything under settings to do that, and the note in the At

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: best price for iphone 4s?

2012-06-07 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

This isn't necessarily the case. From what I've read, its the size ratio more
than screen size that will effect developers. So, the new iPhone could be a
bit longer but, be a little slimmer as well.

2012-06-07 Thread Joe
Sorry if this was already offered, but it seems Tim Cook negated the rumor
of a larger screen size since this would accelerate the fragmentation that
is already occurring in iOS. It's nowhere near the fragmentation of
competing platforms, but developers would have to work twice as hard to keep
things in sync across new and older generation iPhones.--Joe

Saturday does make more sense from a tv perspective.

Is the NHL app different from game center? I'm still pretty new to all
the apps and such, so if that's a dumb question ...well, there it is.
Lol!

Btw I'm rooting for the kings too. In my house they're known as the
Flyers west because of all the former flyers players now on the kings
team.

The full name of the app is OneTouch Voice Memos.

Here's the direct link to the app in the US App Store:

RE: NHL game center app

2012-06-07 Thread John Riehl
Kinber, I think the game is Saturday, not tomorrow. I believe it will be in
the evening but am not sure. Good luck with the audio; I haven't had any
problems with it.
The NHL App works great during the regular season, by the way. Not game
Center, but the NHL app.

RE: NHL game center app

2012-06-07 Thread John Riehl
Kimber, if you're talking about TV streaming, I don't know how to do that.
There is a "live" button that you press, but I haven't donelive tv streaming
because you pay for that service. However, getting audio streaming is very
easy. Go to "More", the fifth tab, and then go to the left until you hear
"audio".
Double tap Audio and then listen for "play btn"; it's just to the left of
the volume. Press the Play button and the radio feed will come up. If
there's no feed running flicking to the right will give you the message
"there is currently no live audio" or something like that.

So double tap on More, double tap on Audio and then double tap on Play btn.

I couldn't find anything under settings to do that, and the note in the At

Any help would be appreciated.

True, but the key issue or benefit of the Onetouch one is that it is right
on the front screen and is running without finding, tapping or otherwise
having to control it beyond start it and stop it.

At Bat Issue:

2012-06-07 Thread Don Moore
Where do you go to set the preferences to allow At Bat to send you alerts?
I couldn't find anything under settings to do that, and the note in the At
Bat app suggests that you have to do it there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have synced the correct app onto the iPod now. I am now happily snapping
