RE: suggestions for a good daisy app
Hi Margaret, Just copy all the MP3 files that make up the Daisy Book (provided they are named so they are in order from first to last) and then use something like the free Chapter and Verse program which you can download from www.LodenSoftware.com to convert the MP3 files to M4B and merge them into a single audio book file which your daughter then can copy into her Audio Books folder in iTunes and sync to her device. Email Problem - Download Remaining XX KB Not Working
Hi, in the past week something has changed with my email on my iPod Touch. Now when I get a message which has a button that says Download Remaining xx KB, I tap on it and it doesn't download. It changes briefly to say Downloading, but then goes back to say Download Remaining XX KB Button. I've checked in my email settings and nothing seems to have changed. I am pretty sure it worked about a week ago and can't think of anything I have changed. Anyone seen this behavior or have any suggestions? Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. To search the VIPhone public archive, visit http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/. RE: Typing styles on virtual keyboard
Hi Gerardo, The way one types on the virtual keyboard is about as subjective as it can be and if you get 10 answers to this there are probably 8 different descriptions of how people type. whatever works for you is what you should do. As opposed to proper 10-finger typing on a full-size keyboard which is a standard technique, typing on an iPhone is where everybody has to figure out what works best. One thing you might keep in mind is that if you do a lot of typing on your iPhone, you should maybe give Fleksy a try. The Fleksy app has been discussed a lot on the list since it's release about 3 or 4 weeks ago and the consensus is that for most people Fleksy works extremely well and results in double, triple or even better typing speeds. If you are new to the list, just go to the list archives (the link is at the end of each post) and search for Fleksy, you can read the description by searching the app store for Fleksy and since the last version it is possible to download the app and practice typing as much as you want for free, if you like how it works and find it useful an in-app purchase will give you full functionality which means you can copy the text you typed to the clipboard with a single button tap for pasting into another application, send text directly to email, a text message or Twitter. The regular cost for the app is $14.99 in the US and Canada although there was a sale price recently, not sure if it's still on. Here's my trick hoping to get some more ideas, but especially help those of you who are only getting started on this new adventure! I've had mine for only about a month and a half but suffice to say the experience, once getting the hang of a few tricks, is awesome! Now for the typing: I type with my right hand in case this makes any difference; Imagine on the keyboard three areas; the index finger goes from the a to the f along with the letters above and below; the middle finger the g h and sometimes j and the letters above and below; the ring finger the rest of the keyboard. Yes! It requires some coordination but once getting the hang of it, apart from feeling more confident typing, I'm little by little picking up speed. Any more ideas? RE: List of DAISY mobile apps
Hello Jay, I am surprised that Indaisy is not in that listing. I bought both Daisy Worm and Indaisy when I bought my first iPod Touch 3 years ago, but haven't used either one for a long time and I don't even have them installed any more and even deleted them completely from iTunes. I listen exclusively to Audio Books and just about all of them come from Audible which means I use the Audible app of course. If I do order the occasional Daisy CD from the CNIB in Canada or download a book from the CNIB Library I either download the MP3 version as many books are offered for download either as a single zip file download of the daisy files or as an MP3 download. Even for the daisy download I then delete all the other files and once only the MP3 files are left I use Chapter and Verse to create a single M4R audio book file or, in the case of extremely long books, I might create 2 or 3. I found the daisy apps somewhat clunky and getting the daisy files onto my device via FPT or iTunes files transfer to me always seemed complicated. Maybe these apps have evolved and become better although I must say that I have not seen any posts regarding Indaisy or Daisy Worm updates and improvements in a super long time, are they even being updated? Re: Anyone have experience pairing Big Jam Box with iOS
That isn't correct for the Big Jambox, that is the Jambox itself. The Bigr Jambox has two buttons on the side. The top one turns the unit on, then hold the bottom one in for a couple seconds and it will go in pairing mode. Then put your iPhone in discovery mode. I find that the Jambox is infinitely easier to pair than the Bose Soundlink. As a matter of fact, last week, I turned on the Jambox and accidentally double-tapped the forward button. I was greeted by loud music, as it had activated my wife's phone which had previously used the Jambox and was twenty-five feet away in the home office. - Original Message - From: Robert Carter To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, August 24, 2012 6:53 PM Subject: Re: Anyone have experience pairing Big Jam Box with iOS On the side of the JamBox just above the speaker connector is a switch. The switch is spring loaded such that it will not stay in the top position. Move it to the top and hold it for a few seconds. Let go of the switch and it will automatically return to the middle on position. At that point, however, the JamBox will be in pairing mode and if your iOS device is in the bluetooth dialog, it will see the JamBox and ask if you want to pair it. Advantages of Unlocking an Locked iPhone4
Hello List, I am not sure if my email was posted because I momentarily lost power. So here I go again and if this is a duplicate, please excuse me for reposting the topic. For those who have an unlocked iPhone, what are the advantages of unlocking a locked phone. The main reason for this question is that I will be traveling overseas and would like to swap out the Simm card to replace it with a data card from the particular country. Are there other advantages besides that, that I should consider doing this? I have already called AT T and I know that this is feasible with my phone. The only inconvenience is that you need to restore the phone. Is it best to back up to the Cloud, as well as to the computer? Which type of back up will restore all the apps back into the folders that they are in now or will I have a huge project on my hands after the restore? I believe the tiny pin hole in on the right side of the phone about 1 inch from the bottom. Is that correct? What kind of tool is needed to eject the Simm card from the phone and can that be purchased from the Apple store? Thanks for any suggestions and justifications for unlocking a locked phone. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Advantages of Unlocking an Locked iPhone4
Hi, As far as what backup to use, I'd do an iCloud backup, since doing it from iTunes won't restore your folders, I don't think. You can use a paperclip to eject the sim card, so no tool needs to be bought. Also, be aware, your phone will be jailbroken once it's unlocked, unless the method ATT uses doesn't jailbreak. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Eileen Misrahi Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2012 2:54 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Advantages of Unlocking an Locked iPhone4 Hello List, I am not sure if my email was posted because I momentarily lost power.
Obviously the att person won't be telling her to jailbreak her phone! Eileen, to answer your questions: The only advantage is that you will be able to use other phone companies with your phone; this is all unlocking does. In my experience you won't have to backup your phone; in the past I've connected it to iTunes and a carrier update has been downloaded installed - E.G. the phone was unlocked more or less automaticly. I didn't need to backup my phone, although you should do this every now and again anyway. Cheers, Ben. On 8/25/12, Daniel Miller miller...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, As far as what backup to use, I'd do an iCloud backup, since doing it from iTunes won't restore your folders, I don't think. Re: Typing styles on virtual keyboard
Hi, I use the index and middle fingers on my right hand, so only two fingers rather than the three fingers you use. Also, my keyboard is set for touch typing, so each letter is entered when I lift the finger. Most sighted people, and some blind people, hold the phone cradled in the interlaced fingers of both hands and use the left thumb for the left half of the keyboard and the right thumb for the right half of the keyboard. According to a sighted friend, the thumbs method is the quickest. He happens to be one of the few sighted people I know who uses two fingers of one hand, which he says is slower, but he also finds it to be less of a strain on his hands. Re: Typing styles on virtual keyboard
Hello, I'm one of those blind people who strongly favours the thumb-typing method shown to me by a sighted friend. I used to be an index-finger-typist, but quickly realized I was much more productive with the more mainstream approach. With that said, I found that it only works on the iPhone when touch-typing is enabled. Standard typing with thumbs, i.e. double-tapping every letter after finding it, was both tortuously slow as to be nearly impossible. If you're going to try it that way, I highly suggest you make the switch. Most of us on this list have already taken that leap, I think, but thought I'd put it out there in case you're still experinmenting with different settings. Best of luck figuring out what works best for you. As Sieghard said earlier, this truly is a subjective matter with no right or wrong answer. Take care, Michelle On 8/25/2012 5:09 PM, David Chittenden wrote: Hi, I use the index and middle fingers on my right hand, so only two fingers rather than the three fingers you use. RE: Advantages of Unlocking an Locked iPhone4
Hi Eileen, OK, so you got a few responses, some with correct information, some with speculations. Ben is correct, an official ATT unlock will, of course, not jailbreak your phone. As for the SIM card, your phone would have come with a little gadget to poke into the hole and pop out the SIM tray, but as already mentioned, a bent-open paperclip will do just fine. From what I heard on Today in iOS there is a process involved, my understanding is that if your phone is off contract you simply request the unlock from ATT and within a few hours you should receive an email with instructions. All people ever reported was that the instructions were clear and easy to follow, nobody explained exactly whether they had to download anything, I sort of doubt it since updates for the iPhone as far as I know come from one place only and that is Apple. I once bought a little Go Phone in Hawaii during a vacation and when I was back in Canada I called ATT and explained that I bought this for my holiday and now that I was back in Canada I'd like to use the phone here. The lady gave me exact instructions on the phone, of course I had to get a sighted person to do this, but it involved going into the menus and eventually to punch in a very long code and once that was done the phone was unlocked. I have an unlocked iPhone 4S which I bought directly from Apple at full price and all I can say is that it is definitely nice to have an unlocked phone although unfortunately I didn't know about StraightTalk when I went to Maui last March otherwise I might have been able to get some sort of plan, ATT unfortunately is very stupid about it. If you are going to Europe or Asia you should have no problem to get prepaid voice and data, only thing is that maybe not all carriers or resellers may offer a micro SIM, I think I might invest eventually in the SIM cutter from www.CutMySIM.com which allows you to easily cut a regular SIM card down to micros SIM size and I think they even give you an adapter which allows you to use it again in a full-size SIM card slot. RE: Prompts
I am not aware that there is such an app, after all, it's easy to clear the apps in the app switcher and good practice to do so if not once a day at least a few times a week. I have gotten so used to doing this and never have issues with the iPhone or Voiceover becoming sluggish.
