Re: iPad mail question

2012-10-16 Thread Garth Humphreys
You've got me intrigued, I have not seen this behavior either. Does this happen
in both landscape and portrait?
It sounds like some kind of notification have you got a Gmail app tthat
notifies you. Or have you got selected contacts in the notification centre?

activating links in facebook posts

2012-10-16 Thread Jodie Hoger
Hi. I tried searching through the archives first as I have a feeling this has
been discussed before but had no luck. I have the native FB plus focus, facely
HD and no matter which app I use, I don't seem to be able to activate links
that people include in their posts. If they simply post the link via the net, I
seem to be able to do that but a lot of my posts include a link to a website
in their actual message and no matter what I try and do, I simply don't seem to
be able to activate the link.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jo

2012-10-16 Thread Rob Harris
That sounds like push notification or mail; and I switch that off; I only
want mail hwen I want to... not be constently pestered by it. I think you
have to dig deep into the setting for the specific mailbox to find that.
But start in Settings/mail, blah and whatnot/find the mailbox/ and dig in
there, including under advanced.

Re: Apple tv

2012-10-16 Thread goshawk on horseback
it's a digital audio connection, generally used to connect the apple tv to
something like a home cinema receiver, or other 5.1, or 7.1 speaker systems.
it can also be used to connect it to something like a minidisk, dat, or cd
recorder.
a box has been mentioned here, that would let you use an apple tv with an
older tv, if you don't want to wait until you get a new tv. it is not from
apple, so they wouldn't mention it, but it does mean that you can use it
with an older tv.

Hi.The Apple TV comes with VoiceOver all set to use. If it hasn't been
 set
up yet it will tell you to press the lower right button on the remote
 three
times to activate it. What makes it even nicer is you can easily turn
VoiceOver off if you want, then with a couple of commands turn it on
 again.

If you have any other questions let me know.

Status report not updating and closing?

2012-10-16 Thread adam morris

Hi all,

Status report was working fine, when I go in and double tap and hold on
the latest report, then swipe down, it says updating.

then it says updates complete, then exits me straight from the app.

When I go back in it hasn't updated at all, repeating the process ends
with the same result.

Have shut the app down from the switcher and has made no difference.

Ideas?

battery life and i phone 4s using ios 6.0

2012-10-16 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
hi all. I notice since downloading ios 6 that the battery life on my
phone doesn't last or stay charged like it did before. Has anyone else
had this issue and if so how did you fix it? I charge it every night so
it's ready to go in the morning for the day. I don't use my phone
during the day while I'm at work it just remains on at vibrate.

Performance! Fully optimized for all iPhones, iPads and iPods ?

• With Voice Camera Pro you can capture magic moments and memories with the
power of your voice.

• Take family, group pictures and self portraits by placing the device upright
on a surface and saying One, Two, Three or Four. Now everyone can join the
picture :)

• Getting dressed or need a friend's opinion on an outfit? Use Voice Camera Pro
to find the perfect outfit and take pictures of yourself without pressing a
button or even holding the device.

Facebook.

• Have fun with the App and control your camera with any words you want by
creating Custom Commands.

? Voice Camera Pro has been featured by MacWorld, Wired Magazine, and at
the Mobile World Congress in Europe and the MacWorld Convention in San
Francisco! ?

Voice Camera Pro is the FIRST and ONLY iPhone, iPad and iPod Camera App that
allows you to control your camera using Voice Activated Commands, and does it
well!

Voice Camera Pro is designed for Apple device users who enjoy new photography
technology for everyday convenience. Voice Camera Pro was also created to help
individuals who are unable to engage with the device using their hands.

If you like using Siri, iPhone Voice Controls, iTranslate Voice or Dragon and
enjoy photography apps such as Camera+, Instagram, Hipstamatic, Facebook
Camera, Color Splash or SocialCam, Voice Camera Pro is the app for you.

Say the keywords in the Command List to use camera functions, shoot pictures
and share them in Facebook, Twitter or by email with our hands-free, Speech
Recognition Technology (SRT).

You can also create your own Custom Camera Commands to control camera functions
in any language. For instance, if you wish to say the word GO to take a
picture, type in the word GO in the custom command field and say Switch to
turn on the Custom Commands. Now when you say GO, Voice Camera Pro will take
a picture.

Version 3.0 comes with the following voice commands:

1. Camera - Launch the Camera
2. One - Take a Photograph
3. Two - Take 2 Consecutive Photos
4. Three - Take 3 Consecutive Photos
5. Four-Take 4 Consecutive Photos
6. Switch - Switch Front to Back Camera (4/4S/iPad 2/3 Only)
7. Flash - Change Flash to On - Off - Auto (4/4S Only)
8. Ribbon - Show / Hide Voice Command Overlay
9. Photos - Launch Photo Library in Camera
10. Share - Choose Method to Share Selected Photo
11. Mail - Email Selected Photo in Library
12. Tweet - Tweet Selected Photo in Library
13. Facebook - Post Selected Photo in Library to Facebook
14. Home - Launches Command List
15. Custom - Launch Custom Commands
16. Info - Launch Info Page
17. Bye Bye - Close the Application
18. Back, Send, Cancel, OK, Relaunch, Yes, No - Functional Commands

Tell us what types of voice activated features you would like us to add to the
application. For example, if you’d like us to enable a voice command that takes
10 pictures at once or pictures in black and white, let us know and we’ll add
the voice command. It's that simple!

Since Voice Camera Pro is 99% accurate in quiet, controlled environments, we
advise our users to use their headphones to control the app in loud places.

The Speech Recognition and Activation Technologies found in Voice Camera Pro is
provided by Creaceed, based on Julius and Flite.

We combined technologies developed by Tokyo's University of Science, Carnegie
Mellon's Language Technology Institute and Belgian Signal and Imaging
Developers to bring you true, voice activated photography technology.

it looks like landscape. the ipad itself appears to be working fine. but given

It sounds like some kind of notification have you got a Gmail app tthat

RE: battery life and i phone 4s using ios 6.0

2012-10-16 Thread Richard Turner
I've had the exact opposite experience. The battery life is much improved
on the 4S.
I use it for checking Email on my breaks but I lock the screen when I'm not
using it.
When you say it is on but on vibrate, is it locked, or just on?
Do you use push notifications?
It sounds like something is running that is causing a battery drain.

hi all. I notice since downloading ios 6 that the battery life on my phone
doesn't last or stay charged like it did before. Has anyone else had this
issue and if so how did you fix it? I charge it every night so it's ready
to go in the morning for the day. I don't use my phone during the day while
I'm at work it just remains on at vibrate.

Voice Camera Pro is the FIRST and ONLY iPhone, iPad and iPod Camera App
that allows you to control your camera using Voice Activated Commands, and
does it well!

Voice Camera Pro is designed for Apple device users who enjoy new
photography technology for everyday convenience. Voice Camera Pro was also
created to help individuals who are unable to engage with the device using
their hands.

If you like using Siri, iPhone Voice Controls, iTranslate Voice or Dragon
and enjoy photography apps such as Camera+, Instagram, Hipstamatic,
Facebook Camera, Color Splash or SocialCam, Voice Camera Pro is the app
for you.

Say the keywords in the Command List to use camera functions, shoot
pictures and share them in Facebook, Twitter or by email with our
hands-free, Speech Recognition Technology (SRT).

You can also create your own Custom Camera Commands to control camera
functions in any language. For instance, if you wish to say the word GO
to take a picture, type in the word GO in the custom command field and
say Switch to turn on the Custom Commands. Now when you say GO, Voice
Camera Pro will take a picture.

Version 3.0 comes with the following voice commands:

1. Camera - Launch the Camera

17. Bye Bye - Close the Application
18. Back, Send, Cancel, OK, Relaunch, Yes, No - Functional Commands

the application. For example, if you’d like us to enable a voice command
that takes 10 pictures at once or pictures in black and white, let us know
and we’ll add the voice command. It's that simple!

Since Voice Camera Pro is 99% accurate in quiet, controlled environments,
we advise our users to use their headphones to control the app in loud
places.

The Speech Recognition and Activation Technologies found in Voice Camera
Pro is provided by Creaceed, based on Julius and Flite.

Re: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.

2012-10-16 Thread Rob Harris
Pointing is a fairly intuative thing, i'm sure life-long totals can point
reasonable accurately if they try. Pointing with a device is slightly more
challenging, and the feedback loop is long, so not learned easily, but not
impossible by any stretch of the imagination. any level of sight below
being able to visuallyi dentify the target or more usefully, see the results
in any form by hwich to evaluate your efforts, is more or less the same for
all.

You have to show them to a sighted at some point, and they feedback how
your aim is. Once you got that right, you can take a snap with reasonable
confidence after that. We liked that 1shot app that starts taking pictures
as soon as it is launched and stops when you stop it with the home button.
So voice-activated could have mileage, and more usefully perhaps, the
ability to change commands to words that are not going to occur commonly in
a populated environment... wouldn't want the app running away with
anything and everything it hears. I wonder about time lag, remember that
Siri and some other voice activated things send the sound to remote servers
for analysis; so out and about could pose a time lag between command,
processing, communication both ways, and final execution... and does it
tell you hwen it's done?
This latter point might limit what you can do with it, and a good reason to
have the 1touch ap, too.

You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.

2012-10-16 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,
I just found out something interesting that I didn't know before.
If your registered blind in the UK you can by apple products v a t free,
so that means you get about 20 percent off.

In the case of the iPhone 5 64 gb model this would save you about £140,
I assume this applies to all apple products, given that they all include
VoiceOver these days.
I new about being able to get products specially designed for the
visually impaired v a t free, but had no idea this applied to Apple.
I rang my local store, and they were aware of this, I heard from someone
else that the store in covent garden in London is also aware of this,
but the person also said that the store in regents street wasn't aware
of it, so it sounds like not all stores know about this, still its
definitely worth knowing about.

Hope people find the above information useful.
Alex.

Re: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.

2012-10-16 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Dear Alex and All,

I have, as this is very important, firstly checked with our internal finance
team, and then with HMRC directly.

You cannot, repeat cannot, get nil rated VAT relief on items purchased within
the UK which are, so to speak, off the shelf none adaptive technologies.

The simple rule of thumb is; if the item comes right off the shelf, and can be
used without modification or alteration by the disabled person, then it does
not qualify.

Yes, the iPhone has Voice Over built into it, as do all Apple products, yet,
the same inclusive or access technology is included in all of Apple's products.
This is not a specific modification for the blind user.

As such, Apple's products do not qualify for VAT nil rating under this section
of law.

They directed me to the below text, which I have, for ease, copied and pasted
below.

It should be noted, that if you obtain a product without paying VAT, where you
should have, you are as liable as the vender. In other words, it is not a
defence to say,'well, Apple gave me the VAT nil rating…

Goods and services exempt from VAT

In accordance with group 14 of the zero rate schedule to the value
added tax act 1983.

Blind and partially sighted people, and charities working on their
behalf, can buy certain goods without paying VAT on them. This relief
from VAT also extends to:

- the provision of services to adapt items for use by, or to meet the
needs of, a blind or partially sighted person
- spare parts, accessories, repair and maintenance of such goods and
adaptations.

Goods which have been designed solely for use by disabled or blind and
partially sighted people and which are for personal or domestic use only
will be zero-rated for VAT.

This would include such items as:

- CCTV reading aids
- braille display units
- braille embossers
- speech synthesiser units
- speech output and character enlargement software.

Computer systems which are specially designed and manufactured solely
for the use of disabled people may qualify for a composite or reduced
rate of VAT where components and software similar to the above are
included in their manufacture.

Training in the use of such computer systems may also qualify for a
reduced rate of VAT for individuals where the equipment is used for
personal or domestic use. You should check with your supplier regarding
the amount of VAT to be charged when discussing purchase of you computer
system.

Relief does not apply to general purpose goods used by disabled people.

Corrective spectacles and contact lenses are not relieved from VAT.

If you need to have any general-purpose goods adapted to meet your needs
as a disabled person, so that you can use them, anything you pay to have
them adapted is exempt from VAT, but you would have to pay the normal
rate of VAT on the goods themselves.

Some building work may also be exempt from VAT, including:

- ramps, doorways and passages
- bathrooms, washrooms and lavatories
- lifts.

-ends-

The last paragraph here is important, that the actual item itself is not nil
rateable, only the adaption. Voice Over is not an adaption, it is not something
specially installed for you, its there for any user, sighted or otherwise.

Regards,

Neil Barnfather

RE: Apple tv

2012-10-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andrew,

If you have an LCD flatscreen TV you do actually have HD and it should have
HDMI inputs unless you mix up the terminology/technology here. Is your TV
still a big box that is a foot or more from front to back or is it a flat,
relatively thin unit? When I bought my Sony LCD TV about 5 years ago they
were not nearly as thin as the LCD or LED TV's are nowadays, but it still is
only maybe 3 or so inches thick. Even if your TV does not have HDMI inputs,
you could get around this if you have buy a home theatre receiver or speaker
system and unless you want something of higher quality which would cost
maybe between $800 and $2,000 you can get entry level systems for $300 or
$400. Those should have HDMI inputs and also still have analogue outputs so
you could connect your older TV and the receiver would convert the digital
signal to an analogue one for your TV. Of course you can pick up 32 inch and
even 37 inch and 40 inch LCD TV's for not too much money these days
especially if you wait maybe until a good sale like around Black Friday or
Boxing Day and the Apple TV is $99 so it doesn't break the bank, either.

Take care,
Sieghard

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would
make little sense to do this only when an HDMI connection is used,

2012-10-16 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi Neel and list,
well I can see you have done thorough research, but my question is why
have three separate apple stores told different people that they can by
apple products vat free?
I would suggest the fact apple includes VoiceOver means they have
adapted the product to be useful to the visually impaired.
I suggest this issue should be investigated further, as we already know
apple stores have mixed training about this, so its quite possible HMRC
might be giving out inaccurate information as well.

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would
make little sense to do this only when an HDMI connection is used,
after all, HDMI is still a digital connection except that it includes

Re: Adding Music to the iPhone

2012-10-16 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Beverley,

You can copy music manually or sync. To sync, connect your phone and find it in
the iTunes source list. Tab through the radio buttons and choose Music. Then
tab until you reach the Music section of the dialog box. If you want to sync,
check Sync Music. Then you'll probably want to check the box for selected
playlists, artists, and albums. Then move through the tables listing playlists,
artists, etc., and check the ones you want. Tab to Apply, and press Enter.

Best,
Anna

Focus 40 and the 3-GS

2012-10-16 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I want to run my Focus 40 Blue with my 3-GS which is running IOS 6. If
my understanding is correct, I should find braille somewhere under
settings. So I went to settings, general, and accessibility, but found
no braille. So, where is braille?

Incidentally, this is not the current incarnation of the Focus; it is
the earlier one with the whiz wheels.

On a related note, I don't know if it was on this list or on the one to
which I am no longer subscribed which switched to Google Groups.
Somewhere in the past, I remember seeing a message, perhaps from Esther,
which indicated that when using the Focus 40 with a 3-GS, there was a
trick to re-awakening the 3-GS, if some time had elapsed since the last
braille keystroke. Please, could someone refresh my very fallible
memory as to what that trick is. Also, after locating braille in
settings, just what are the steps to pair the 3-GS with the Focus?

Thanks much.

RE: Braille Displays For iPhone

2012-10-16 Thread Marco Migotti
The 20 cell display that I am using is the pac mate 20 from Freedom
Scientific. It is portable, but doesn't use Bluetooth so it is only usable
on the pac mate notetaker or it has to be plugged into a laptop with
Bluetooth 2.0 and above. My 40 cell unit is a focus 40 blue and it does have
IPhone interfacing capability but I find it kind of big for just reading
emails or checking text messaging.

I have been watching this thread with interest, trying to get a feel for
what is out there. I don't wan to get a display that is to big to be
portable, but not to small as to cause extra work when reading a book or
something like that. I realize that most of my requirements will still come
down to a personal preference, but gathering information on the available
products is a good start I think since it isn't really possible to just walk
in to a store and take a look.

I have both a 40 cell display and a 20 cell display. I've found that
when reading I preferred the 20 cell as it meant I could read the book
faster using 20 cells. Also, when taking notes, 20 cells was all I
needed to help me remember where I am in the notepad and to do quick
review of what I have written. The 40 cells is useful for editing
long documents but if you only have a 20 or an 18, you'll manage just
fine. I personally don't think that anything less then a 18 cell would
be useful as you'd not be able to put many words on a line. This is
just my opinion.

 I'm wondering the same thing. I'm used to a 40-cell braillelite 40
which is still plugging away but unfortunately won't work with
anything on the Mac except Terminal. I see the low prices of some of
 these 12, 14, 18 and even 20-cell displays and wonder if I wouldn't be
frustrated. I also see the trend toward everything being dependent on
the computer or smart device instead of being able to use it as a
stand-alone also and while I see the benefits I wonder if I will be
happy with something that forces me to always have to have two devices
of some kind together. Yet it's not like I can really picture me
affording a stand-alone unit with maybe an sd card slot so I'm not
limited by the braille device's storage. so I'm trying to reconcile
myself to being glad to buy a device that will work with phone and
computer. I think I can do that but I'm not sure I can convince myself
that a device with so few cells, even at an almost affordable cost,
will be worth it. I also would like to hear from people who habitually
 have used 32 and
 40
cell displays as to whether they really find the displays with fewer
cells satisfying for purposes of reading and web browsing.

Dear Alex and All,

I have, as this is very important, firstly checked with our internal finance
team, and then with HMRC directly.

You cannot, repeat cannot, get nil rated VAT relief on items purchased
within the UK which are, so to speak, off the shelf none adaptive
technologies.

The simple rule of thumb is; if the item comes right off the shelf, and can
be used without modification or alteration by the disabled person, then it
does not qualify.

Yes, the iPhone has Voice Over built into it, as do all Apple products, yet,
the same inclusive or access technology is included in all of Apple's
products. This is not a specific modification for the blind user.

As such, Apple's products do not qualify for VAT nil rating under this
section of law.

They directed me to the below text, which I have, for ease, copied and
pasted below.

It should be noted, that if you obtain a product without paying VAT, where
you should have, you are as liable as the vender. In other words, it is not
a defence to say,'well, Apple gave me the VAT nil rating…

Voice Over is not an adaption, it is not
something specially installed for you, its there for any user, sighted or
otherwise.

I assume this applies to all apple products, given that they all include

I new about being able to get products specially designed for the visually

Hi Neel and list,
well I can see you have done thorough research, but my question is why have
three separate apple stores told different people that they can by apple
products vat free?
I would suggest the fact apple includes VoiceOver means they have adapted
the product to be useful to the visually impaired.
I suggest this issue should be investigated further, as we already know
apple stores have mixed training about this, so its quite possible HMRC
might be giving out inaccurate information as well.

 Dear Alex and All,

I have, as this is very important, firstly checked with our internal finance
team, and then with HMRC directly.

You cannot, repeat cannot, get nil rated VAT relief on items purchased within
the UK which are, so to speak, off the shelf none adaptive technologies.

They directed me to the below text, which I have, for ease, copied and pasted
 below.

It should be noted, that if you obtain a product without paying VAT, where
you should have, you are as liable as the vender.

Voice Over is not an adaption, it is not
something specially installed for you, its there for any user, sighted or
 otherwise.

 Hi Anna,

The instructions Brett gave work, and I have created the bookmark this
way on my iPhone and iPad. However, I've always found it easier to
create the Instapaper bookmark on my Mac and the sync the bookmarks,
as is also suggested on the Instapaper pages as an easier method.
Whenever you read instructions to drag and drop a bookmark to your
browser's toolbar, use the contextual menu instead: navigate to the
bookmark on that page and copy the link. Create a bookmark, and use
the context menu to edit the address field of the bookmark so you
paste in the java script that you copied. The same instructions work
whether you use a Mac or Windows, and can be applied to any java
bookmarklet, including Google translation bookmarks. The only
specific recommendation for Mac users is that these be saved to your
Bookmarks Bar, so you can activate the Read Later bookmarking with
shortcut keys like Command-1 (if it is the first bookmark in your
Bookmarks Bar). Also, on an iPad I go to the main Settings menu and
under Safari I turn on the switch for Always Show Bookmarks Bar so I
can just flick to Read Later and double tap.

Here's a link to a recent post I wrote on the macvisionaries list with
more detailed information on setting up an Instapaper Bookmark. It
also links to an older Mac-access list post with step-by-step
 instructions.

Ironically, this information about Instapaper bookmark creation for
both Safari on the Mac and various browsers on Windows was available
in comments for the original AppleVis app entry when there was
initially a free version of Instapaper. Then, last year in April,
when they started up the Recommend apps that you like feature, I
wrote back that I wanted to recommend Instapaper, but that they had
just discontinued the free version. The response was to remove the
free app description, even though all the useful comments also applied
to the paid version, which many commenters said they had:
 www.applevis.com/applevis-forum/site-news-feedback-and-discussion/reco
 mmend-apps-you

For the email bookmarking feature I just copied the individual address
they gave me to my Contacts, with the name Instapaper. You can find
the address in your accounts page on the Instapaper web site.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

On Oct 12, 12:17 am, Brett brettst...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi,

The easiest way to do this is on your phone from the instapaper app
itself.
Just go to Settings and double tap on the Add Instapaper booklet to
Safari.
In that dialog, tap the Okay button, this will copy the necessary
java script to the clipboard. It will also open a page telling you
how to add the bookmark. You will be asked to bookmark the current
page, so add the bookmark. Before saving the bookmark, double tap the
address field and flick to the clear text button and double tap it.
This will clear the current page address. Use your rotor to get to
edit and choose paste to paste the contents of the clipboard. This will
paste in the necessary java script.
Then click the save button. You will now have the instapaper bookmark
saved.
To save something to instapaper, just navigate to that page and bring
up your bookmarks and choose the instapaper one.

 Hope this helps,
 Brett.

relatively thin unit?

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would

Sieghard.
Thanks for this info, it sound really good, and I am looking something like
this, because my air condition is not accessible at all, and I get crazy when I
try to increase or decrease the temperature.
Now, do you have to pay a monthly payment to radiothermostate? or just you
payed the thermostate, and the account in this web site is free.
Also I have seen another device called honey well, and sound like the same
thing, do you have any knowledge about this honey well device?
I don't want to pay anything every month, it is my main concern about open an
account, because with out the account, we are not enable to use the remote
control, and if they want that we pay, we have not choice.
Thanks for any aditional information.

a WiFi module which means they can connect to your WiFi network at home. As
soon as they are connected and you also signed up for an account at

from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access and of course
your router/WiFi at home has to be up and running. I could sit on the beach
in Maui and as long as I had a data connection I could open the app and see
what temperature it is in my house, I could increase or decrease the
temperature etc.. I live in northern BC and it doesn't get hot enough for
long enough to worry about air conditioning, but the thermostat can control
heating as well as cooling. If you search the archives for thermostat you
should find quite a few messages from myself as well as a few others
regarding this. You can order the thermostats directly from
www.RadioThermostat.com, but I also know a few people in the States said
they found them at Home Depot for $99 which is less than if you buy them
online. Amazon also has them, just look for Radio Thermostat and you can
find the app by searching for the same, the app is pretty much fully
accessible and relatively easy to use. The model I have I think is called
CT30. You would of course have to get these installed by a professional
installer and if you are renting I guess you may have to check with your
 landlord.

Any advice with this way to control the air condition?
In my home the aircondition is very hard to use w been blind, everything

Hi list,
I just found out something interesting that I didn't know before.
Alex.

Yes, for some reason or another. That part of the app issue hasn't been

I double click the home button to bring up the app switcher, I then single tap
the home button to go home. This will leave the audio in tact playing. I use

Alex,

I suspect I'm afraid that it is the wrong way around at Apple's stores. HMRC
are correct, their articles state so, their people state so, the RNIB
web-site states so, my experience and understanding states so, as do my
qualified certified auditors.

Apple will just be getting confused. they've likely been told by a client
and its gone around like Chinese whispers. I will though, for good measure
ring one of these Apple stores in question to see what they have to say.

As stated though in my earlier detailed message, the case speaks for itself.
When you consider the rules on nil rating VAT.

The item can only be considered for nil rating where it is exclusively built
for the blind, or, where a modification is done to it to make it usable. The
modification is not a modification if it is a feature for all users,
irrespective of disability.

In this instance, every iPHone since the 3GS has had Voice Over installed,
and as such, the phones are not nil rateable under these conditions.

OK, now I've just phoned the three main London Apple Stores that I could
think of off the top of my head. Two stated that they have heard of this,
but, that the reduction of VAT is something that would be the responsibility
of the customer to arrange, that they had no facility to lower their prices.
Other than of course by the known discounts offered by Apple directly.

So that clears it up, if you went and bought your phone from Apple, then
submitted the relevant claim form to HMRC, they would reject it on the bases
that you would have to declare that no modification has taken place to your
phone beyond standard manufacturing methods and the standard product
specification.

Although I can use the app, it still goes away when the phone goes in to

Hellow,
Once in accessibility, go into voiceover and braille is in there. I can't

I want to run my Focus 40 Blue with my 3-GS which is running IOS 6. If my
understanding is correct, I should find braille somewhere under settings.
So I went to settings, general, and accessibility, but found no braille.
So, where is braille?

Incidentally, this is not the current incarnation of the Focus; it is the
earlier one with the whiz wheels.

On a related note, I don't know if it was on this list or on the one to
which I am no longer subscribed which switched to Google Groups.
Somewhere in the past, I remember seeing a message, perhaps from Esther,
which indicated that when using the Focus 40 with a 3-GS, there was a trick
to re-awakening the 3-GS, if some time had elapsed since the last braille
keystroke. Please, could someone refresh my very fallible memory as to what
that trick is. Also, after locating braille in settings, just what are the
steps to pair the 3-GS with the Focus?

Thanks much.

RE: Braille Displays For iPhone

I think the only true 20 cell display that works with the iDevices is the
Braillino from Handitech.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it, b but the good thing is that it uses
off-the-shelf double a batteries and has some basic functions built-in.

I'm very curious to see the new Perkins Mini which is 16 cells and works

The 20 cell display that I am using is the pac mate 20 from Freedom

on the pac mate notetaker or it has to be plugged into a laptop with
Bluetooth 2.0 and above. My 40 cell unit is a focus 40 blue and it does have
IPhone interfacing capability but I find it kind of big for just reading

I have been watching this thread with interest, trying to get a feel for
what is out there. I don't wan to get a display that is to big to be
portable, but not to small as to cause extra work when reading a book or
something like that. I realize that most of my requirements will still come
down to a personal preference, but gathering information on the available
products is a good start I think since it isn't really possible to just walk

I also would like to hear from people who habitually
have used 32 and 40 cell displays as to whether they really find the
displays with fewer cells satisfying for purposes of reading and web
 browsing.

Re: battery life and i phone 4s using ios 6.0

2012-10-16 Thread James Mannion
Well it sounds like you may have had some success in closing out
something that was in the app switcher that may have been running in
some way that it shouldn't have been. Some apps seem to at times
misbehave like that. I guess the other thing to say is that a battery
drain is not a universal issue with IOS 6 and so if you are having
excessive battery drain, it should be able to be traced back to
something about your phone. It's unfortunate this issue strikes some
with every new version of IOS that comes out. Sometimes it is just a
bad or corrupt installation of something. So that's good and
frustrating in a way at the same time. Good luck and I hope you have
already eliminated the problem. Tracing such issues is no fun.

Sounds like you are doing everything properly. When I do this, and get to the
point of tapping th the export button, it brings up a list of available apps
including Downcast. All works well. Maybe its something to do with the size of
the file. I have only imported shortish files in this manner, i.e. around 20Mb.
This is just speculation though.

DropBox files not showing completely on iDevice

2012-10-16 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I uploaded 9 files of about 15MB each to DropBox from my PC. All are there, as
shown in DropBox when viewed from my PC. But, when I go to DropBox on my
iPodTouch, only 2 of the 9 files show up, file 1 and file 8. This persists 24
hours after upload to DropBox, and following a Power Off/On of the iPodTouch
with a fully-charged battery (not that I expected those factors to play a role;
I just thought I'd mention it).. I only have about 300MB total in my DropBox
folders.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. Keith

I tried to install Instapaper, not sure I managed it, instructions were sort
of confusing to me and although I bought and installed it, not sure exactly
how to use it, I was told it would enable me to mark articles I did not have
time to read for later consumption.

So far as I can see no help topics.

For the email bookmarking feature I just copied the individual address
they gave me to my Contacts, with the name Instapaper. You can find
the address in your accounts page on the Instapaper web site.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

 Hope this helps,
 Brett.

App Store quirk

2012-10-16 Thread Joney
Hi All:

I have occasionally had a problem with accessing updates in the app store.

There would be a notification that there were updates available and, when
going into the app., it would say everything was up to date.

What I have found is that if you remove the app store from the app switcher,
(I usually remove all the other apps too), but I don't think you have too,
you can go into the app store append the updates will show up.

An interesting quirk that I don't know why it occurs. Such is the life of
IOS6. *smile*

is it a flat, relatively thin unit? When I bought my Sony LCD TV about
5 years ago they were not nearly as thin as the LCD or LED TV's are
nowadays, but it still is only maybe 3 or so inches thick. Even if
your TV does not have HDMI inputs, you could get around this if you
have buy a home theatre receiver or speaker system and unless you want
something of higher quality which would cost maybe between $800 and
$2,000 you can get entry level systems for $300 or $400. Those should
have HDMI inputs and also still have analogue outputs so you could
connect your older TV and the receiver would convert the digital
signal to an analogue one for your TV. Of course you can pick up 32
inch and even 37 inch and 40 inch LCD TV's for not too much money
these days especially if you wait maybe until a good sale like around
Black Friday or Boxing Day and the Apple TV is $99 so it doesn't break the

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would

Dear Alex and All,

I have, as this is very important, firstly checked with our internal
finance team, and then with HMRC directly.

You cannot, repeat cannot, get nil rated VAT relief on items purchased
within the UK which are, so to speak, off the shelf none adaptive
technologies.

The simple rule of thumb is; if the item comes right off the shelf, and
can be used without modification or alteration by the disabled person,
then it does not qualify.

Yes, the iPhone has Voice Over built into it, as do all Apple products,
yet, the same inclusive or access technology is included in all of Apple's

In other words, it is
not a defence to say,'well, Apple gave me the VAT nil rating…

- lifts.

-ends-

The last paragraph here is important, that the actual item itself is not
nil rateable, only the adaption. Voice Over is not an adaption, it is not
something specially installed for you, its there for any user, sighted or
otherwise.

Apple tv.

Thanks again. You have saved me a lot of money.

Hi Andrew,

If you have an LCD flatscreen TV you do actually have HD and it should
have HDMI inputs unless you mix up the terminology/technology here. Is
your TV still a big box that is a foot or more from front to back or
is it a flat, relatively thin unit?

Black Friday or Boxing Day and the Apple TV is $99 so it doesn't break the
bank, either.

Take care,
Sieghard

What is digital optical output and what does one use it for?

I'd like to say how useful this discussion about Apple tv is for me.
I've not got one yet but I'm learning a lot about it so when I do get
it, I will be much better informed. I have not got an hd tv yet so I
can't get Apple tv because I understand that it does not work with
previous generations tv sets. Mine is a lcd flat screen tv.

Many thanks again to all of you.

Hi Simon,

I also have not hooked up the Apple TV to my receiver with an
optical cable, but there is no reason why Voiceover should not work
if you choose

to do so.

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would
make little sense to do this only when an HDMI connection is used,
after all, HDMI is still a digital connection except that it
includes video as well as audio whereas the optical connector is
just for audio. In any case, if you are interested just buy it from
Apple and send it back within 30 days should you not like it.

Looking for an RSS Reader with a Specific Feature

2012-10-16 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi everyone, one of the things I like about using Tweetlist, is that you can
add articles to Instapaper without actually opening the article first. I've
found an RSS Reader called Reeder that does this, but it's inaccessible.
Does anyone know of an RSS Reader that's accessible that, for example, let's
you double tap and hold on a headline to get a menu which includes add to
Instapaper?

Re: reading email

2012-10-16 Thread Carol Pearson
Hi there,

I have been given various advice by people On ways to read. Anyway, after
lots of experimenting I find that this works really well, They're in mind that
this is is a technique and you need to perfect it. When you first come to your
mailbox you need to find the first message and double tap on this. This will
start to read it. What I normally do at this stage, Having read the message, is
to then delete it or move the message. You will now hear the next message
announced with the subject et cetera.. At this point You need to Use and
upwards movement with two fingers very gently and not too long and the movement
should start about halfway up the screen in order to read and the next page
will start reading. This is what you need to do.

Do give it a go and see if it works for you. Be sure to persevere.
