Instacast is also a good alternative but I prefer Downcast myself. I've also used iCatcher! It remembers your place in the files and allows continuous play of podcasts. In other words, when one podcast ends the next one starts playing automatically. There are two speeds possible, the normal speed and double speed. You can either keep all the podcasts or set it up to delete the file after you have heard it. You can search for podcasts by name, or select a category and find podcasts that way. Pretty good app and accessible too. And it's free. RE: control an apple tv with the remote app
Hi Kawal, If you like the features of the Apple TV and have a receiver with HDMI or even just an optical input you wouldn't even need a TV. You could still use it as an Airplay device or to listen to YouTube, Netflix, Internet Radio or to stream content from your computer. Of course a TV nowadays takes up a lot less space than it used to since you can get TV's that are so flat that you could simply hang them on a wall. My Sony LCD TV is one of the older generation and compared to the new ones it is relatively thick, but even if Apple made a complete TV it would take up just as much space as any other TV and the current Apple TV is such a tiny box that it doesn't really take up any room, I have it sitting just under my TV where it's hardly noticeable. RE: control an apple tv with the remote app
Hi Kawal, I meant a stereo or home theatre surround sound receiver. I am not sure if you have a stereo system and if so if it is a portable system or if you have a system with components such as an amplifier/receiver, a CD player, speakers etc. Most newer amplifyers or receivers have a number of input connectors which allow you to hook up things like CD Players, DVD Players and so on. Anything that has video as well as audio like a DVD player, satellite or cable box typically use the so-called HDMI connectors which stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. Both sound and video are transmitted in one cable. A optical digital connection transmits audio only and it is also a common input on most newer amplifyers or receivers and by newer I mean anything that is not much older than 10 years. I don't think you can connect an Apple TV to an iMac and I don't see much reason why you would, but that would be a question for somebody at the Apple store where you are buying your iMac. The Apple TV is a consumption device, it is basically a simple interface which gives you access to various sources of media including iTunes, third-party subscription services such as Netflix, publically available stuff like Internet Radio and YouTube and media in your own iTunes library on your computer. It is designed strictly to stream this content on a TV either by connecting it directly to a TV with an HDMI cable or to a receiver with either an HDMI cable or optical cable. Mail and Braille
Hi all, I've noticed something peculiar and rather annoying when I use the mail app on my iPhone 4 with a Braille Note Apex. when I read a message in the mail app and exit out of the message using the Back button, I'm always taken to the top of the mail list and have to scroll down to where I left off. This doesn't strike me as normal behavior. How can I return to the position in the list where I left off without having to do all that scrolling? any tips would be appreciated_ thanks_ tom Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Redeeming gift cards with the new iTunes
Hi all, I was fortunate enough to receive an iTunes gift card among my Christmas loot, but have run into problems trying to redeem it. Is it just me or is the new iTunes particularly frustrating in this respect? I found a screen that would allow me to redeem a gift card, I entered the code, then an inaccessible message saying the code was invalid came up. I was unable to read this message with Jaws and only learned about it through a sighted family member. I then tried to look for a redemption option somewhere in the iTunes or app store apps on my 3gs...no dice. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, have they found a workaround? RE: wireless printer recommendations compatible with i devices and Windows pcs
Hi, I'm far from an expert. I have not bought the program yet, just used the trial. The trial puts a watermark on anything you print, so you can verify that your printer works, but won't go on using the free version since the print out is not very good. I just went through the setup of the program, it found my printer. Then, since my printer is a USB printer, my computer has to be on when I select print on my iPod Touch. For example, if you get an Email that you want to print, you select reply and then there is a print option. Double tap on that and you will see your printer, select it, and the other options then hit print and the message will print. Re: Selecting with a braille display
Hello, Kawal and all. Kawal is perfectly correct below, except that, in my experience, one need not be at the top of any text to be selected for the select all command to work. Rather, one can be anywhere in the text to be selected when issuing the select all command, and that text will be selected. It may also be worth noting that x with space, (dots 1346 with space), will cut the text to the clipboard, and that backspace will delete the selection without cutting it. HTH. Re: Blu Tooth braille display
Hi, speaking as a technologist who regularly teaches alva, humanware, and focus displays, I suggest that braille displays are one of these highly preferential things. The control surfaces and braille cells feel unique to each model. You should put several in your hand if you can, and choose one that feels nice to you. In terms of quality, alva bc640 is one to avoid since the build is extremely flimsy. Humanware displays have the best build quality. All have two year warrantees. Depending on what screen reader you want to use on windows, some may have better driver support than others. If you have questions about specific ones, email off list and I will. Rey to help if I know the answers. RE: Redeeming gift cards with the new iTunes
Hi Michelle, Chris said that the Redeem button is there on the iPhone in the App Store at the bottom of the screen. He forgot to mention that you have to first select the Featured tab which is the one on the far left. I find it easiest that once I select it, I make sure I touch it again, then swipe left and 2 or 3 swipes should put you on the redeem button. I haven't redeemed a Gift Card in iTunes 11 yet, the last time I bought two $50 Gift Cards when Safeway was selling them for $40 each and I Redeemed it right there in the store since I asked the customer service clerk to read the code to me and then once I redeemed the cards and the balance showed on my account I just asked him to throw them out. If iTunes said it was an invalid code you must have mistyped it. Have a happy new year, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: braille navigation in Ibooks pages
Hi, You can definitely move around freely through a page using the panning keys. YOu can use the rotor to locate links and then double-tap. HTH, Anna On Dec 25, 2012, at 9:08 PM, Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com wrote: This is for those of you who use braille with iBooks, especially if you've also used speech, but whatever. Apple still hasn't fixed the bug that was introduced with the major update to iBooks earlier this year, wherein you can't havigate within a page of text in an iBook by flicking. Nor can you navigate by selecting lines in the rotor. This makes things somewhat more difficult than they need to be if you are trying to use cookbooks, for example, or read books and use the internal links, then go back where you linked from. So I wonder, if you have a braille display, can you pan freely around in a page, click a link, read the relevant text on the new page and then get back to where you were efficiently? Default location of podcasts
I downloaded several podcasts via itunes with the intent of playing them using presumably the music player in my 3GS. I subsequently installed Downcast and want to play these podcasts using Downcast. But I really don't know where to find them on the iPhone. So, please someone come to my rescue and tell me where these podcasts are hiding. Thanks. Reading text files on the iPhone
I would like to know which of the various available programs would be the best choice for reading text files on my 3GS? These are not huge text files, probably between 4 kb and 5 kb in size. But I remember some discussion on this list about problems with one or more programs particularly if text files were rather large. So please give me some basic info as to what to look for and what to avoid. Thanks. Don Roberts -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. streaming audio volume on iPod 5
On my recently purchased iPod fifth generation, I note that the audio volume of most streams is quite low. I am using my 3GS as a kind of bench mark, and I find that the streaming volume on the 3GS seems consistently louder. I could be wrong about this as I haven't researched it thoroughly. I am therefore writing to inquire whether others have noted this phenomenon on new iPods; and if so, what is the fix if there is one? Thanks. Sharing Shazam
Thought I would share with you an ap that is free but can be upgraded to an ad-free version if you like. It's called Shazam and allows you to discover what you are listening to as well as share that information with your Twitter and or Facebook contacts. It's very good and from the testing on my iPhone 4 it recognized every song it could listen to so to speak. With VoiceOver it is a little sluggish but that could be I have an iPhone 4 so not the latest and greatest. If I do consider the iPod Touch 5 I'm sure it will be a heck of a lot better grin. Simply search for Shazam, s h a z a m, in the app store. Like I say it is free but you can upgrade to an ad-free version. This I got thanks to a recommendation from my uncle. -- Christopher Hallsworth -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Wireless Printing with Print Central
Hello List, I just want to mention an app that was free about 1 1/2 weeks ago, so keep a look out for it. It is called Print Central. It allows one to print with wireless printers or a printer that is connected via USB. I have a Brother laser printer that is USB and after installing a small utility software from the web site EuroSmartz.com. The utility software at the web site is WePrint. One this was installed, I successfully printed from my iPhone4 , with the computer on. I have not attempted to print with the computer off, but the web site information states that one can print over 3G or 4G and have their print copy waiting in the bin when one returns to their home computer. I thought this was very slick and I am happy so far with the app Print Central. There are many other features such as editing, and saving to various file formats, but I haven't try them out just yet. Re: Reading text files on the iPhone
Hi Don, Read2Go is the best app for reading text files, because you can scroll by lines. Other apps only let you scroll by large chunks. This app does have some minor problems since upgrading to the latest iOS version, as it now noticeably pauses when scrolling pages in large text files.
