However, I must admit that I am somewhat shocked by this reply as it appears they are basically telling you that your credits are gone and that's that. Definitely not cool. They absolutely must figure out a way for people to be protected in case somebody has still 50 or 60 pictures left and is getting a new device or maybe their phone was stolen or messed up and needed a reboot. I wonder if credits are backed up with an encrypted backup. Of course I also understand that they can't give people back credits just on their say-so since unfortunately not everybody is honest and I bet some would abuse this, but if that is so and they can't already do so, they need to find a way to track how many credits each user has by associating credits with either the Apple ID or by syncing them to iCloud or by having people sign up for a Tap Tap See account where these credits could be bought. If the latter would be possible they might actually get around Apple and offer subscriptions at 30% less money because they don't have to pay Apple. The Microsoft Office for Office 365 subscribers app is one example where Microsoft tied their app to an Office 365 subscription which you have to have, Netflix is another example, Skype another, many Voip services also work that way. For all of these you buy the subscription directly and then when you sign in with your credentials in the app it knows you are entitled to whatever it is you are subscribing to. I hope Tap Tap See is reading this and given the somewhat negative press they received lately reply to the list with some positive news that maybe we can look forward to a better Tap Tap See soon. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
I prefer the phone without a case, but as others have said I find it is a bit too slick. I would like something like a simple rubber band to go around the edges, but have cutouts for ports and buttons. Does anyone know if such a thing exists? I have not seen one, but it sounds like the bumpers might be a bit bulkier than IM looking for. I am just thinking of the size and thickness rubber band you might find holding bunches of produce together. All thanks! Re: game questions, iAssociate 2
My suggestion is to double check your settings for the game. You do this by going to the tab at the bottom labelled Levels. Then flick until you find Settings. There are a lot of switch buttons in this section that you can change to make the game easier. I make sure that the one that says Advanced VoiceOver is set to on. The structure of the game is the reason it is difficult to keep up with each association as on the screen it is one big honeycomb that spreads out everywhere. I had a sighted person described the layout to me and really it is a wonder that this game even works with VoiceOver. I have to give the developers of this app credit for the fact that it does work well with VoiceOver. Some levels are really hard such as Bonus Land as you can not guess the word by guessing one letter at a time, you have to know the whole word. I have sworn not to use hints myself as like I said, unless it is a bonus word, you can guess at the answer by putting in one letter and then tapping the done button until you find the letter that works. -Original Message- From: Jordan Norregaard Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2014 9:24 PM To: viphone Subject: game questions, iAssociate 2 Hello to everyone! First, I'd like th thank everyone on this awesome list who answer my questions...you guys are great! I found a new game I'm absolutely addicted to, it's called iAssociate 2. Its one of the best word association games out there and its one heck of a challenge! For those of you who play it, what is the best way to keep track of a word chain, or one single thread of words? I find myself getting lost at times when it comes to what is supposed to associate with what, and lose track of what I'm doing. i've found myself using hints for dumb words I should've gotten easily. With that said, its still an awesome game! Jordan -- The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged. If you are not an intended recipient, you should delete this message. Re: New iPhone Mike and handy recorder app. was keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app
Yes, that's a good article. However, I'll even go more simple than that. If you have a dynamic mic, you must get directly in to the mic, with in 6-10 inches of it. Speaking directly in to it. If you get off to the sides, above, below. The sound is lost or greatly reduced. In a condenser mic, I can sit back in my chair speak in or should we say, speak towards the mic. The mic will pick up a wider range of sound from all sides. - Original Message - From: Neal Ewers To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, February 05, 2014 00:39 Subject: RE: New iPhone Mike and handy recorder app. was keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app Ari, here is a very simple definition. The link to a demo I heard by Patrick Perdue is below, followed by my thoughts on the app. http://borris.me/audio/IQ5.mp3 Pros. Easy to start recording. Records in wav 44.1, 16 bit Works with the iPhone microphone, but is very full featured to work with the many settings on the microphone mentioned above. Cons. Some of the buttons are not labeled, but you can re-label them. Only shares with Sound Cloud. Otherwise you have to get the files off of iTunes. I will be getting my microphone tomorrow and may put up some short samples not covered in Patrick’s very nice demo. Enjoy. Re: Instructions needed to have my Outlook express E-mail sent to my phone required!
One point I want to add concerning Chris's reply; this is regarding POP3 service (I know very little about IMAP so will refrain from commenting to that regard). If you are using POP3 service, you may run into a slight problem in that switching from a single device-based e-mail client to having two devices accessing the same account may result in some issue with both devices receiving all messages. Here's what I mean; suppose on your PC you have the POP3 service configured such that the messages are deleted from the server when they're downloaded to that PC. Well, if those messages are removed from the e-mail server before your iPhone has a chance to attempt to retrieve them, the iPhone will never get them. And if you have the e-mail client on your iPhone similarly configured, the PC may never get messages removed from the server after being downloaded to the iPhone. Now, you can always disable that specific aspect of configuration (on both PC and iPhone), but then you'll need to take measures to eventually remove those messages from the server. There is, the last time I checked into it, a limit on the amount of disk space ISP entities allow any e-mail service so you will need to purge the server of old messages in some fashion. Just a cautionary note, that's all. Holland's Boy, Bill - Clothes make the man. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
Thank you, everyone, for the thoughtful replies to my question. I never thought my post would elicit so many responses in such a short time. I asked for information about using iPhones without cases because my case recently broke at its structurally weakest spot, and I thought before replacing it I would consider the possibility of using my iPhone in unprotected mode, so to speak. Armed with your opinions and suggestions about how to keep an iPhone safe without resorting to a case, I went to my dealer today to look at cases but also quite seriously thinking of not buying one. I ended up with a new case because I was entitled to one replacement case at no charge during the life of my contract, an option I didn't know I could exercise. Although I have a new case, I may take the iPhone out to see how I like using it that way. Even if I decide to keep it in its case, you have provided a wealth of insights about working with an unclothed iPhone which other users may find helpful down the road. Yours is the kind of advice that makes the VIPhone list so valuable. Craig On 2/4/14, Craig Werner coffeeb...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, everyone. RE: Using an iPhone without a Case
Hi Alex, If you like the feel of the iPhone as is but you want a more grippy surface you might want to consider the Invisishield protectors from Zagg. The material they use is the same as what they put on helicopter windshields for flying in desert conditions where sand can quickly dull the glass. They are made from a self-healing material which has a very rubbery, grippy texture and you can get just a screen protector or you can get them also for the back and the sides of your phone. Here in Canada they often have a booth at larger malls and they also offer to put them on for a small free which is a good idea especially for us blind folks. They use some sort of gel first and then the pieces of material have to be applied very precicely. I think you are not supposed to use it for an hour or so while it sets, then you can use it and while there might be some tiny bubbles they work themselves out within a day or so and you'll notice at the beginning it feels a bit soft, but then as the gel or whatever it is they use cures it becomes very solid, almost like it's coated in this rubbery material. I used to have them on my iPhone 4, only thing I didn't like was that the glass now is not slippery any more for lack of a better word. I like it that I can slide my finger around with very little resistance and that does change a bit with the Invisishield. But any screen protector changes that a bit and I guess if you were mainly concerned about having a good solid grip you could just get them put on the back and the sides. RE: Recommendation for speakers for the iPad
Hi Jordan, If you don't mind that they are wired you can save yourself a lot of money since most Bluetooth speakers are more expensive and of lesser sound quality unless you get into the $200 and up category. Anyhow, as for wired you could simply use any set of good quality powered computer speakers. If you have a stereo you could just connect your iPad to it with a 3.5mm Mal to RCA cable which you could plug into any input on your stereo amplifier or receiver except Phono (that was for the old turn tables). Some of the buttons are not labeled, but you can re-label them. Only shares with Sound Cloud. Otherwise you have to get the files off of iTunes. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
I looked into those when I first got my iPhone5. Most of the Amazon reviews seemed negative, and that was discouraging. Plus, I love the belt clip for my current case and would hate to lose that feature. I love the idea of the Invisible Shield, I'm just not sure how it would work for everyday use and shock protection. Plus, as you said, the screen needs to remain smooth for good Voi9ceover use, at least I think so. I guess I'd like to see a phone covered in this stuff and go from there. -- Have a great day, Alex mehg...@gmail.com On Feb 5, 2014, at 8:12 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Alex, If you like the feel of the iPhone as is but you want a more grippy surface you might want to consider the Invisishield protectors from Zagg. So I don't want my iPhone scratched by all the paraphernalia that I carry around with me. Consequently I keep it in an Otterbox case to protect it. A colleague of mine used to carry her phone around without a case. Over time the back camera lens got seriously scratched, and since the camera is important to me for use with apps like Text Grabber, Camfind, et cetera, I further resolved to always keep my phone in a case. Now tab until you find the Radio Button for Music and check it by pressing the space bar. Now tab a bunch of times until you hear something like Sync Music and make sure that is checked. Now tab again and either check the checkbox for Sync All Music or for Sync selected playlists, genres, artists and albums. If you check sync all music then all the music you have in iTunes will be synced. If you have a large capacity iPhone and you want all of your music on it and your collection fits then you might want to do that. If not use the sync selected option. If you do that, then after you check the sync selected button, tab until you find list views or treeviews (I can never remember what they are) for Playlists (if you have playlists) or tab on for artists, albums and genres. I prefer to sync by artist, so I find the artist list/treeview, then I arrow down the list of artists I have and check each one I want to sync with the space bar. When I am done I tab to Apply and activate it with enter or the space bar, at that point the sync starts and your music will be synced. Keep in mind that if you sync 10 or 15 Gb of music (thousands of songs) this can take 20 minutes or even half an hour, I suggest you use a cable and not WiFi sync as that is even slower. You can use F6 to find and review the sync status, once the sync is done you hear the familiar tri-tone iTunes makes when it's finished doing something. Hope this helps. I suggest you go to www.FreedomScientific.com/FSCast and look for the 2-part series on iTunes 11 with Jaws 14 Jonathan Mosen did as the FS Cast for December 2012 and January 2013, you'll get a lot of info out of them. Re: Double purchase TapTapSee - Contact Us
If I needed another reason not to use it this is it; completely unacceptable and ridiculous. Re: keyboards
There are three different keyboards commonly used. They are QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ. AZERTY keyboard is mostly used for French and QWERTZ for German. Most of us are using QWERTY. The names come from the six letters on the upper left corner of alphabet keys. That is, QWERTY keyboard has Q, W, E, R, T and Y on the upper left corner. Likewise, AZERTY keyboard has A, Z, E, R, T and Y there, and QWERTZ has Q, W, E, R, T and Z there. The only difference between QWERTY and AZERTY is that the two letters Q and W are swapped with A and Z. QWERTY and QWERTZ have the letters Y and Z are swapped each other. Other than these differences, there might be some diacritic marks provided in each keyboard. Hope this helps you understand the difference. Re: Replacement of the Stoway keyboard
As far as I know, my Rivo keyboard has two options. ABC option and small qwerty option. When I first got it, I wanted to type with ABC option, but soon I realized its small qwerty option was much much better. It was brilliant. I use Rivo to search icons in my iPhone, turn pages, activate icons and menus, find everything on the screen, control rotor values. Sometimes I use iPhone while it's plugged on the speaker dock to charge. I can walk around my room and use it with only the Rivo in my hand. No manual booklet or audio CD came with it, but the online manual on the web site was written well and I had almost no problem except a few minors. But reading the manual helped me everything. I charge it often but less often than my iPhone. Hope this help you understand about my satisfaction with this lovely keyboard. Using an iPhone as a recording device
For some reason, my Olympus m4 temporarily stopped working. As a result, I decided to buy dropvox as I’d heard good things about it. Primarily, I am using it to record lectures in a classroom. I had 2 issues come up. a. The recording seemed amazingly quiet. Using goldwave, I had to increase the volume approximately six times before I got something that sounded like what the Olympus records on its own. Would a different mike make the recordings on the iPhone work with less processing? If so, what mike would be portable and easy to set up? b. When I started recording, I shut off VoiceOver, then locked the phone. AN hour later, I unlocked the phone, used triple click, but it seemed VoiceOver wouldn’t come back up. When I listened to the recording, I heard VoiceOver being activated even though I didn’t hear it through the headphones I was using. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks for any help. Re: ( month olf Iphone would not turn on
Hi, Since it's only 9 months old, if possible, I'd take it to an Apple store and get them to have a look at it for you. Having said this, as has been suggested I would try restarting the phone then restoring it in iTunes, although not being able to swipe, not turning on degraded battery life doesn't sound overly promissing. Cheers, Ben. On 2/5/14, isaac isaac.heb...@gmail.com wrote: Is you're charger broken. Have you tried hard resetting you're phone. RE: Using an iPhone as a recording device
Interesting. I cannot get DropVox to recognize the internal iPhone 5 microphone. I have used this before, but I do not know why now there is no sound from the microphone when I am recording. I have looked in settings and don’t see anything that might make a difference. It does record softly and I was going to play and see where the meters were actually going, but no luck if I can’t get it to see the microphone. One thing that I wish were easier to figure out is the size of things that you're going to sync. Thanks, Ari On Feb 3, 2014, at 2:14 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hello Harish, With your phone connected to the computer, open iTunes. RE: Using an iPhone as a recording device
Hi to the person who wondered why the microphone on DropVox was not set higher. I can only say that if I hold the microphone about a foot from me and talk in a normal voice, I peak at about -4 DB which is well within, if not a bit above, the suggested dynamic range. It may simply be that you were a good ways from the person speaking. On the other hand, I don't know how various iPhone models work with respect to their microphone volume. I am using an iPhone 5. I'm not sure this helps, but I don't know of many microphones if any that would be louder than the onboard microphone. Re: Fw: Double purchase TapTapSee - Contact Us
Hello Doc and All, I'd like to provide an explain for the response that was sent to Doc. Apple has four classifications for in-app purchases. They are as followed: consumable, non-consumable, non-renewing subscriptions, and auto-renewable subscriptions. Two of those purchases are restorable if the app was accidentally deleted or the device had to be restored without backup. The in-app purchases that are restorable are: non-consumable and auto-renewable subscriptions. This information comes directly from the Apple website (link provided at the end of the message). In the case of TapTapSee, the credits for pictures are categorized as consumable products. Therefore, they are not renewable. The monthly subscriptions, are not auto-renewable. Therefore, they are also not restorable. Now as mentioned, we are looking for a possible way around this issue. One solution, as Michael noted, is to restore the purchases from your backup. The backup would have to be made prior to deleting the app and/or switching devices. Doc, I apologize for the email not going into details to explain the issue that we're facing with restoring previous credits. However, I am glad that we are able to address this issue in the open forum. Below I'd like to provide you with a direct quote of the information that is available on Apple's page in regard to in-app purchases: If you lose your In-App Purchases because apps were accidentally deleted or you had to restore your device without a backup, you may be able to download some of your purchases again for free. See which types of In-App Purchases you need to purchase again or can redownload for free in the table: Purchase again: Consumable and non-renewing subscriptions. Download for free: Non-consumable and auto-renewable subscriptions. To download an In-App Purchase again, you must download it from within the installed app using the same iTunes Store account name you used for the original In-App Purchase. Link to the source: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4009?viewlocale=en_USlocale=en_US I'd also like to mention that we've been in communication with Apple, and are still seeking a possible solution. We'll continue to keep you informed on the progress. If you have any further question, please feel free to contact us directly at cont...@taptapseeapp.com. Re: Recommendation for speakers for the iPad
Hi Jordan, For portability and performaNCE, I really like the Mini JamBox. It has really good volume, and if you plan to take your iPad out of your home, the speaker's size is a real plus. You can also use this speaker to make and answer phone calls. Battery life is reported at 10 hours, even more than the Bose Mini speaker which reports battery life up to 7 hours. The one down side is that activating Live Audio will require sighted assistance, as it must be activated. I had to use Google Chrome on the PC, as the other browsers I tried didn't show the Live Audio on/off option. But once that's done, you won't have to do this again. I recently purchased mine for around $150 U.S at amazon. Good luck. HTH. carrying IPhone in a case
Hi, all. I have a curiosity question which relates to carrying an IPhone with a case. I remember that with the old phones it was strongly suggested that if you were carrying your phone in a pocket or close to your body the phone should be carried with the back facing away from the body or in a protective case. This had something to do with radio waves or radiation. I'm wondering if this has changed with the use of smart phones. I've not heard or read of any of this type of warning. Any thoughts? God bless! Battery Drainage
Hi, ever since I upgraded to iOS 7 on my iPhone 4S, my battery has been draining at a crazy rate. During the work week, for example, I'm not allowed to have the phone in my workspace, and so I leave the phone on Airplane Mode in a locker. Yet, at the end of the day my battery has dropped from 100% to 75%. I've turned off indexing, background refresh, and GPS where necessary. I have no push notifications. I have the bear minimal running, and yet my phone guzzles like an Irish. Any ideas? I would blame it on battery age, but I only began experiencing the issue with iOS 7. Actually, the price is the same. Cell phone companies subsidize the cost of the phone so customers can pay a low initial cost for the phone when they sign up for service. Re: Fw: Double purchase TapTapSee - Contact Us
I understand now. I am happily using the program. My frustration came when the app disappeared while I was trying to move it to another page. If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning start? - Original Message - From: TapTapSee To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, February 05, 2014 3:39 PM Subject: Re: Fw: Double purchase TapTapSee - Contact Us Hello Doc and All, I'd like to provide an explain for the response that was sent to Doc. RE: Column Browser control in iTunes11.1.4
Any music you want to manage with iTunes and that includes syncing it to a phone has to be added to your music library. This, however, does not mean you have to physically copy the music files to a different location. You can think of your iTunes music library (same goes for Movies, Tones etc.) as a database which includes links or, if you prefer you could use the term Shortcuts, to the physical copy of the music. It's a bit like shortcuts in Windows. You could have a file called To Do on your computer and let's say it's a simple text file with Notes about things you want to do. Now instead of having the actual file on your desktop where maybe you could accidently delete it, you could have it in your My Documents folder. You can then create a Shortcut on your desktop which points to the file To Do.txt in your My Documents folder and if you click the shortcut, the text file opens, but if you accidently deleted the shortcut, your To Do list is still there in your My Documents folder. At the same time, if you moved the To Do.txt file from the My Documents folder to a different location and then clicked on the shortcut, you would get a message that there is a missing link and the file the shortcut is pointing to is not there any more. In the same way, if you for example add a song that is on an external USB hard drive to your iTunes music library and then disconnect the drive, the song can't be played any more. If you press enter on the song in your iTunes library the program is looking for your external drive and if it can't find it it will show it as a broken link. Now, having said all that, all you have to do to add a song or a bunch of songs from a folder to your iTunes library is to go to the File menu and choose ither to Add File or Add Folder. This will open a fairly familiar Windows dialogue box where you can browse to your song or the folder where your songs are, then activate the Select button and after a moment you hear the iTunes tri-tone and at that point your song or songs should be available in your library. Hi April, Trying a different charger certainly is an option, but if that does not help I would definitely contact Apple to get help in assessing this. After all, even if you haven’t bought Apple Care Plus you do have 1 year warranty and if the phone is defective Apple will send you a new one, they are very good about this. RE: Battery Drainage
You may want to try a factory reset. I know they are a pain and it takes time to put all the apps back, re-sync your content, move apps into folders and so on, but only this way you can be sure you start fresh. If you restore from a backup some problems could be restored as well. It's even a good idea to not put any apps or only a very few back after the restore and to assess how your battery does. Then if everything is good I would put apps back a few at a time with a couple of days in between to make sure there isn't one in your collection which likes to eat the battery. 3 Apps From iTunes Won't Sync Onto 5s
Hello All, I am asking this question for a friend. He has a 5s and I was helping him sync his apps to the 5s. However, there were 3 that would not sync over. The error message received was stated that in order to sync these apps, you need to authorize the computer. However, the computer is already authorized to the Apple ID. Where else do I need to look in order to sync these last three apps to the phone? Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
