Re: aftershokz headphones

2014-05-23 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
The bluetooth antennae in the Aftershockz Bluez is on the left side of
the headset, so if you place your phone on the left side of your body
then that might help. Note that the Bluez 2 is redesigned, and this
isn't supposed to be as much of an issue.

Hi Christine,

A Bluetooth headset or speaker cutting out is typically more a result
of its connection to the phone. If, for example, you put on a
Bluetooth headset and then clamp your phone under your armpit most of

It's a good idea to know if the Bluetooth modem in the headset is on
the left or on the right and then to keep your phone on the same side.

Bluetooth 3.0 and 4.0 devices are to some degree dealing with this,
but it could still be an issue.

Also, they cut out so badly while walking and using Blindsquare, that

RE: apple tv

2014-05-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Patti,

I've only just tuned into this thread but it sounds like you've been given
some excellent help.

You know, we, as technology consumers, take so many things for granted
these days. For example, I have my Apple TV connected to my big-screen
television along with a DVD player, a digital cable box receiver, etc. And,
when I want to switch from watching Cable to the Apple TV, I use the
television's input selector. I am fortunate enough to enjoy a level of
residual vision that allows me to do this comfortably.

As I began reading this thread I asked myself what I would do if I lost the
remainder of my vision and was totally blind. How would I reliably know
which input on the television was selected? This question returns me to the
statement that we technology consumers take so many things for granted. In
this instance, I am referring to the fact that many consumers assume that
using the television's input selector is the only way to determine what is
being streamed out to the television set. I guess this stems from the law
of conservatism. That is, most of us want to accomplish more and more tasks
while using less and less hardware.

This explains the ever increasing popularity of the universal remote control
versus device-specific remote controls, among sighted people.

As a low vision consumer, I find that the more devices I attempt to control
with an off-the-shelf universal remote, (1) generally requires more effort
and (2) results in less accuracy. Consequently, I prefer to use
device-specific remote controls so that I can commit their various layouts
to muscle memory.

I employ the same philosophy when purchasing office equipment. No
printer/fax/scanner combos here. Simply stated, my scanner can only scan,
my printer only prints and my fax, well you get the idea. The primary
benefit to me is that, since I only need to send a fax once or twice every
two months or so, the fax machine, being only a fax machine, has remarkably
few buttons. Therefore, even if I don't use the fax very often, all things
being equal, all I need to do is place a sheet of paper in the proper place,
dial the telephone number, and press the big button on the lower left. Get
it? If I were to use a combination printer/scanner/fax machine, unless I
faxed on a regular basis, it is highly unlikely that I would remember the
proper sequence of non-accessible hardware-panel soft-control commands
necessary to switch the device to fax mode.

What does any of this have to do with your new Apple TV?

Before all of these remarkably sophisticated digital televisions, with their
multiple input channels, were introduced to the market, we old-timers, who
wanted to view external media from remote devices such as VCR consoles,
gaming machines, etc through one television, used hardware video
switchboxes.

In fact, I used video switchboxes for over ten years in order to accomplish
what was then considered an amazing breakthrough in consumer consumption.
The most relevant aspect of this for those of us who are either blind or low
vision is that the switchboxes used good old-fashion hardware push-buttons.

Allow me to digress for just a moment:
At one time, I used a video switchbox along with an audio switchbox in
combination with my television and stereo in combination with my Cable box,
gaming console, and VCR recorder. The net result was that, among other
things, I could watch and record my video games while simultaneously
listening to the television broadcast of my choice, while at the same time
recording a second show and seamlessly switch between the various audio
and/or video, inputs, independently, with the press of one or at most, two
buttons.

Once, during that time, I had the cable company send someone out to my house
in order to repair an outside connection. When the cable guy came into my
living room and saw my setup, he offered to pay me to set his media center
up the same way. My setup looked like something you'd find in a
Frankenstein movie but it worked and it was the envy of all who saw it, back
then. I do so miss those days (smile).

Okay, getting back to the point.

Patti, should you choose, you can go to your local RadioShaq, or someplace
similar, and purchase a digital video switchbox which will allow you to use
hardware buttons to select the various input devices to your television set,
including your Apple TV.

I hope you find this helpful.

Mark

2014-05-23 Thread Patti Johnson
That is a wonderful idea, and I think I will do that because i was
getting a bit depressed thinking I'd have to figure out which menu went
where. I had to do that on these tvs with my Sky Angel receiver and it
truthfully was a nuisance, and I didn't watch that service as much as I
would have simply because i didn't want the hassle. So I was halfway
thnking of returning the Apple tv just because first I don't have much
in the way of help in setting up, though i can get it, and then the
nuisance of changing menus just didn't appeal to me.

Now, with your suggestion, I have hope.
Thanks so much,
Patti

hanging up a call is the only time the two-finger double tap works

Re: apple tv

2014-05-23 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Mark, Patty and Interested Others,

Mark, your suggestion is an excellent one. I'll offer another option Patty for
you to consider. I had the exact same problem of switching sources to go from
regular TV to the Apple TV. I knew the sequence, but it didn't always take and
of course, there was no audible feedback, I just didn't always hear VoiceOver
when Apple TV was supposed to have started. I stumbled across a solution by
going to my cable provider's tech support department, Time Warner in my case.
After the rep understood the issue, we worked out a system whereby I have much
more reliable results. A lot depends on how your remotes were programmed. I
use my Time Warner remote to power on our TV, I then use the TV remote which
remains always on since I get no audible feedback when it is off or on. I then
move down to the source, HDMI1 and press select. Apple TV loads and I can then
use the Apple TV remote as usual. The nice thing is that when I wish to go
back to regular TV, I just press one button on my TV

Can Voice Dream Move Forward and Backward with the Earpod Remote?

2014-05-23 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm a huge fan of Voice Dream Reader and have been following the thread
about how it handles playback rewind and fast forward in response to the
AGOGO app discussion. I have been using my iPhone 5 for all my book reading
and really enjoy listening with it in my pocket where I can control playback
using the remote and volume buttons on my earpods. Does anyone know of a
workaround that allows rewind of Voice Dream playback using the remote
button? Unless I'm missing something, I can only move backward and forward
in Voice Dream using the gesture-based swipes to move the set increments. I
figured if another method was available, someone here would know about it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark, Patty and Interested Others,

Mark, your suggestion is an excellent one. I'll offer another option
Patty for you to consider. I had the exact same problem of switching
sources to go from regular TV to the Apple TV. I knew the sequence, but
it didn't always take and of course, there was no audible feedback, I
just didn't always hear VoiceOver when Apple TV was supposed to have
started. I stumbled across a solution by going to my cable provider's
tech support department, Time Warner in my case. After the rep
understood the issue, we worked out a system whereby I have much more
reliable results. A lot depends on how your remotes were programmed. I
use my Time Warner remote to power on our TV, I then use the TV remote
which remains always on since I get no audible feedback when it is off
or on. I then move down to the source, HDMI1 and press select. Apple
TV loads and I can then use the Apple TV remote as usual. The nice
thing is that when I wish to go back to regular TV, I just press one
 button on my TV
remote and I have the last channel I was watching, sound and all. As I
stated, this was worked out with a tech support rep at Time Warner, just
substitute your cable provider. Anyway, just something to try before
you go out and purchase anything. Good luck.

 Hello Patti,

You know, we, as technology consumers, take so many things for granted

television along with a DVD player, a digital cable box receiver, etc.
 And,
when I want to switch from watching Cable to the Apple TV, I use the
television's input selector. I am fortunate enough to enjoy a level of
residual vision that allows me to do this comfortably.

As I began reading this thread I asked myself what I would do if I lost
 the
remainder of my vision and was totally blind. How would I reliably know
which input on the television was selected? This question returns me
 to the
statement that we technology consumers take so many things for granted.
  In
this instance, I am referring to the fact that many consumers assume
 that
using the television's input selector is the only way to determine what
 is
being streamed out to the television set. I guess this stems from the
 law
of conservatism. That is, most of us want to accomplish more and more
 tasks
while using less and less hardware.

This explains the ever increasing popularity of the universal remote

As a low vision consumer, I find that the more devices I attempt to
 control
with an off-the-shelf universal remote, (1) generally requires more

and (2) results in less accuracy. Consequently, I prefer to use
device-specific remote controls so that I can commit their various

Hey everyone, a friend of mine told me about a bug he read about, and I can
confirm that it does exist. Perhaps this will help if you use the dictation
feature. I had actually noticed something interesting on my iphone 5c, I
would go to bed with a battery level of around 50 percent, and wake up and
it would be 35 percent or lower. Here is the issue. If you use dictation,
once you are done, the phone stops translating your text, but the microphone
remains on and continues listening. This will drain your battery much
faster. To get around this until Apple fixes it, after dictating and
receiving your text, hold the home button until you hear the siri tone. You
don't have to say anything to siri, just wait for the tone then release the
home button, that should turn the microphone off. When doing this, my
 battery goes down much slower.
Hopefully Apple will fix this soon.

Does anyone know if the full SixtyMinutes program is on the CBS News app,

The SixtyMinutes app is $4.99. Does anyone have it or know if it’s
accessible? Also, do you know if it’s an annual charge or a one-time purchase.
It wasn’t clear from the iTunes Store description.

hoping
someone might convey a recent list of commands for external Bluetooth
keyboards on iOS 7. Does such a list of commands exist?

I also just received the Amazon Basics keyboard so many on this list
are
using, and I really do like it. Smile. I do have a problem with it in
 that
it takes about 25 seconds for my iPod to pickup the Bluetooth signal if
I
turn off the keyboard then turn it back on. I listened to Raul's demo,
and
his keyboard turned on within 5 seconds or less. Is there a way to
 increase
 the Bluetooth connection time?

I had an interesting shopping experience at Amazon.com. I purchased the
keyboard, and they delivered it the very same day--that's some great
service. I thought it would cost me an arm and a leg, but normal UPS
 ground
delivery was only $1.50 less and would take 3 or 5 days. For same day
delivery, $1.50 more was definitely worth it. I don't know how
Amazon.com
could pull this off so quickly, but they did. Must have been one of
their
new octo-copters which flew over my house and dropped the thing off.
 Smile.

Again, any help with a list of Bluetooth keyboard commands will be
greatly
 appreciated!

RE: Any comparison between android kitkat version on google phones versus Iphone devices

Of course, Android in earlier versions was not as accessible as Apple was in
its earlier versions. So, is it safe to assume that whatever you can do on
an iPhone, you can now do on Android as well?Such as, browsing, texting,

Both platforms are accessible, but they work differently, it's like
comparing apples and oranges. You can perform all of the major tasks
that you could want on both of them. Android is certainly more
customizable, and you can do things such as replace the system
keyboard, use a different home screen, etc.

Re: keyboard cases question

2014-05-23 Thread Alan Paganelli
I am assuming your asking about the cases that have a builtin QWERTY keyboard.
The case I have for my iPad Air uses rechargeable battery. Mine lasts around
2 weeks to 3 weeks and I get quite a bit of email. I can use the keyboard wile
it is recharging and it takes about 90 minutes to fully charge the keyboard.
If it goes dead, your pressing keys and nothing happens. So all that's needed
is to connect the charging cable to either a USB port on a computer or your
iPhone's charging cube. When it's plugged in, just wait a few seconds and
start typing again. Or, if you like, you can leave it plugged in.

Re: Any comparison between android kitkat version on google phones versus Iphone devices

2014-05-23 Thread Alex Hall
No, it's not safe to assume that. I recently read a top 10 accessibility
wishes for Android 4.5 article, and many features were rather concerning. For
example, the author hoped to one day be able to navigate text by line properly,
or use the default browser, Chrome, efficiently. Android can be customized to
be more accessible, but you have to find the right apps, packages, launchers,
and so on to fit your needs and taste. If at all possible, get ahold of an
Android device you can return, and play with it for a while, relying on Google
or the Eyes-free Google email list for help. If you don't like it, you can
return it. Android has its good points, but set up a try before you buy if
you possibly can.

Both platforms are accessible, but they work differently, it's like
comparing apples and oranges. You can perform all of the major tasks
that you could want on both of them. Android is certainly more
customizable, and you can do things such as replace the system
keyboard, use a different home screen, etc.

Can someone point me to some website or podcast comparing accessibility

 With appreciations for suggestions.

You should check the settings. Go into Settings from the main VDR screen and

 Hi Patty,

As Larry already pointed out, the Apple TV gives you access to iTunes
for renting and buying movies and if you are a Netflix subscriber then
it's probably the nicest and most accessible way to consume Netflix
content. It's also great for Youtube.

If your TV has multiple HDMI inputs you do have to be able to select
these depending on what you want to watch. For example, let's assume
you have your cable box connected to HDMI 1, a blueray DVD player to
HDMI 2 and your Apple TV to HDMI 3, then you do have to be able to
select your input on the TV depending on what you want to watch. Often
this is done via a single button which invokes a menu on the TV and
you then have to arrow to the input/source you want and select it.
This may not be the most accessible thing to do, but you would have to
maybe aska sighted friend or family member to help you with this.

Now, as for the Apple TV, had you posted to the list that you were
looking to get one I would have advised you to wait until Monday, June
 2. This is when Apple will have it's world wide developer conference
and when iOS 8 will be introduced.
There are a lot of rumours according to which Apple may announce the
next generation Apple TV during this event and that it will be much
more advanced. There will most likely be an app store for the Apple TV
which means you can get apps for various services and maybe games and
so on and the talk is also that the Apple TV may very well become a
complete replacement for your current set top box.
There are also rumours that the Apple TV will have SIRI and that the
 remote may accept voice commands.
Now, having said all this, they are of course rumours and I guess
we'll find out in a week and a half if any of them are true. Did you
purchase your Apple TV from Apple directly? If so you probably have
time to return it should something really cool be announced. If not at
least the apple TV only costs $99 which is not so much compared to
what most other Apple devices cost.

If your TV has multiple HDMI inputs you do have to be able to select

you have your cable box connected to HDMI 1, a blueray DVD player to
HDMI 2 and your Apple TV to HDMI 3, then you do have to be able to

you then have to arrow to the input/source you want and select it.
This may not be the most accessible thing to do, but you would have to

Now, as for the Apple TV, had you posted to the list that you were

There are a lot of rumours according to which Apple may announce the

There are also rumours that the Apple TV will have SIRI and that the

Hello Fred,

That's a great question. The answer is that modern digital video

Very good idea, Mark, however, don't you have to have inputs for each of the
devices on the switch box? and so the question begs, does the switch box
have an HDMI input as well as other types?

Patti, should you choose, you can go to your local RadioShaq, or someplace
similar, and purchase a digital video switchbox which will allow you to use
hardware buttons to

For A T T Wireless Customers: What to do if you get a spam text message

2014-05-23 Thread M. Taylor

Block spam text messages on your wireless phone

Spam text messages are unsolicited and generally unwanted commercial
advertisements sent to wireless phones via text or picture/video messaging.
These unsolicited messages count against your text messaging plan, creating
additional concerns.

Many times the spam message announces that you've won something, enticing
you to respond and collect your prize. The spammer's intent is to get access
to your personal data to sell to someone else. Be aware of the different
phone and text messaging rewards scams that target ATT wireless and text
messaging customers.

Spam text messaging is an increasing problem worldwide. We remain committed
to fighting spam and are working to minimize it across our growing network.

What to do if you get a spam text message
Forward the spam message to the short code 7726 (SPAM) so that we can start
an investigation. If you receive a number of spam texts, we recommend
putting 7726 into your contact list so that you don't need to remember the
numbers.
Don't respond directly to a phone number where you believe the spam text
originated. Responding alerts the spammer that your number is genuine.
If you're not able to view the number or if it's email spam, forward us the
entire message (along with the full header if it's an email) to
ab...@att.net.

Important Note
There isn't a charge to report mobile spam. Messages forwarded to 7726 don't
count toward your data usage package.

RE: apple tv

2014-05-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

I guess it all depends on whether you will be the only one using the Apple
TV. I have an Apple TV to a large extend because it's so easy to stream
pictures or videos from my iTunes library to my TV and show them to sighted
friends and family. Then there is, of course, Netflix and Youtube, once
again, if a blind person is the only user and cares only about the audio
that's fine, but it wouldn't do it for me.
Anyhow, instead of having it connected to my TV, I have everything including
my Appl TV, satellite receiver, blueray player and so on hooked up to a Sony
surround sound receiver. This way I can just use audio if I am by myself and
my Sony LCD TV is just a display which I leave off unless I have sighted
guests. One other advantage is that I can select my source on the receiver
with actual buttons, there are buttons for all 6 HDMI inputs, for optical
inputs etc.

Sieghard
