RE: Facetime on ipad mini

2014-08-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Andrew,

You find Facetime in the Settings app. Swipe about 10 or 12 times past
General, just before Facetime is "Phone" and "Messages".

As far as finding the Facetime app, you can use Spotlight Search. Do the
following:

1. Touch any app on your home screen, then do a 3-finger swipe down to bring
up Spotlight search
2. Type "Facetime" into the search field at the top of the screen.
3. Review the search results in the middle of the screen. If you find
Facetime and it is followed by something like "Utilities" that means it is
located in a folder called Utilities. If it says nothing it means it's on
one of your home screens and not in a folder.

Facetime is an iOS stock app so it can't be deleted and it's definitely
going to be somewhere.

Oh, one more thing, if you don't have a heading called "Applications" in
your spotlight search results, you might not have that enabled. You would
have to go to Settings, General, Spotlight search to check that. Spotlight
search is the fourth item in General Settings after About, Software Update
and SIRI.

Sieghard

I've been through my home screens that equal 3 several times but can't find
it. I run iOS 7..1.2 which is the latest, I believe. I will go through all
my folders again. I asked siri to make a facetime call to a contact but
siri said that it couldn't do so because I had restrictions on in FaceTime.
I went through my settings but I can't find anything to do with facetime
there either. I feel a bit of a dummy at the moment.

Thanks for your replies, folks.

Hi All,

I'm not up on all these abbreviations when looking through the games being
played.

Does anybody have a listing of the 3 letter codes for the teams?

Thanks in advance for the help with this app.

I did manage to listen to the bears game only because of the CHI abbreviation.

Re: wonderful accessibility update to move fitness app

2014-08-14 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello Eileen and all,

If you don't want to do the exercise Move proposes, you can request a different
exercise. In the update that came out earlier this summer, when you did this,
the screen didn't update properly, so you couldn't find out what the new
exercise was. This has been fixed. Also, if you use the countdown timer, it now
speaks timer progress every 5 seconds until the last 5, and then every 1. It's
so nice to hear how much time is left.

You need the Youtube app to access the videos. The developer plans to add text
instructions to a future update, but he's trying to get clear directions from a
trainer, and that's taking a while. In the meantime, he is trying to include
only videos that have clear verbal instructions and get rid of the ones that
have no spoken content. I haven't checked out many videos yet, so I don't know
whether he's done that yet.

Best,
Anna

Re: dice with buddies question

2014-08-14 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello,
In Dice for Buddies, you get an additional 50 points for your second or later
yahtzee, but that 50 points only shows up in your total score, not in the place
you scored it.
For example, if you rolled 5 2's, it would show 10 points for your 2's, but you
would also get an additional 50 points in your total score.
So that 50 points does not count toward the 63 points you need in your upper
section to get the bonus points.

>From what I can tell, this is the biggest difference between Dice World and
>Dice for Buddies.
I will also say that from my experience, it is harder to roll things in Dice
for Buddies, but maybe that is just me.

I do like and play Dice for Buddies, but Dice World is my favorite.

Hope this helps,

Chris Chaffin

Re: Can't Find Search Field On Google Play Store Site

2014-08-14 Thread Arnold Schmidt
As has been pointed out in earlier answers, there is a search field in google
play that shows up on my pc, running Internet Explorer 9. I don't know why it
does not show up on my iPhone 5, I wonder if it is a VoiceOver issue?

Two alternatives: Try going to
books.google.com
This may be on its way out, being that they encourage going to google play. I
found the following book on books.google.com, but could not figure out how to
buy it on my iPhone. Another alternative: enter the following into google,
substituting the title of the book you are wishing to find.
site:play.google.com "the hot zone"
I found it this way, with a buy button. Unfortunately for google, I will read
it from Bookshare. And wow, buying a Kindle book is so much easier than this
google play store.

Ok, I feel like I'm going slightly bonkers here. When I go to

buttons that say "top charts" and "new releases", but no search field. Am I

RE: Facetime on ipad mini

2014-08-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Andrew,

Are you using iOS 7 on your iPad Mini or is it an original iPad Mini which
is still running iOS 6? The Facetime app was only added in iOS 7.

However, you don't really need a Facetime app to make a Facetime call.
Please note also that Facetime Audio is another feature which was added in
iOS 7, in iOS 6 one can only do regular Facetime calls which include video.

If you are running iOS 7 then maybe your Facetime app was moved to another
home screen or into a folder.

Sieghard

Subject: Facetime on ipad mini

Dear Listers,

I have a facetime app on my iPhone 5C but I can't find anything like this
equivalent on my ipad mini. I assumed that facetime app would be there by
default. Do I have to download a special application to be able to do
facetime on iPad mini?

Thanks for any tips.

Andrew

Re: Can't Find Search Field On Google Play Store Site

2014-08-14 Thread Teresa Cochran
Thanks, guys. Yes, I have the iOS Google Play Books app, and the only way to
get books to read is on the website, since Apple does not allow purchases of
books and other material in third-party apps. I don't have a computer, so I'm
using iOS Safari. I can borrow my husband's computer, but just thought there
might be a trick to searching with iOS Safari.

Thanks,
Teresa

Teresa,

What browser are you using? I don't see a search field or a search bar
when I go there with Safari or Chrome on my iPhone. When I go there with
Firefox on my laptop running Ubuntu though, I do have a search field at
the top of the page and a search button on subsequent pages.

I know that doesn't help, but I don't think you're going bonkers. It
does seem strange that you wouldn't be able to search for books or
anything else in the Play Store from a mobile browser though.

BTW, there is a Google Play Books app for the iPhone, so I think this is
on topic for this list, at least as much as finding books on Audible,
Amazon or any other service that has an iPhone app would be.

RE: I Can Receive Email On My Phone But Cannot Send Email From My Phone

2014-08-14 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I thought I had my DSL account SMTP set to Pop on my computer, but for some
reason I can’t access the advance setting to confirm the port number. The
incoming mail pop server port is 995 and the imap outgoing server port is 465
or 587. I’m not sure if this will help. For my DSL account, my SMTP is set to
Gmail indicating a port setting of 465. I do know that my husband has the same
issue, but I haven’t had a chance to check it out. My best recommendation is to
call Earthlink’s tech support and get the port server number for SMTP when
using the Pop server. HTH.

Many services are going to IMAP now. I have IMAP on Cox. I believe that iOS ow
set up imap by default, but I'm not sure if this is the case on Earthlink.

Pop and Imap basically apply to incoming mail. You may have to look up the
outgoing settings.

Hi Tamara,

Is this set up as a POP3 email account? If so then the problem is most
likely your outgoing mail server. When I was using POP3 many years ago I
remember I often had that problem with my email provider which was Telus
here in Canada. If your provider supports IMAP it would be much better to
use that when you set up your account. If not you can probably get around
the problem by using the outgoing server information for gmail, you'd have
to Google the POP3 settings for gmail and find out exactly what it is as I
can't remember any more. Of course you have to make sure you still use your
providers incoming POP3 server information and only use the gmail one for
the outgoing mail server.

Hello Tamara,

The short answer is that you probably have your password encryption, on the
phone, set incorrectly.

Unlike in the old days, it is not enough to enter the correct username and
password; items such as SSL certificates and how the password is encrypted
must also be addressed.

As if this were not enough, some internet service providers (ISPs) insist on
a certain type of encryption be used in order to send mail from their SMTP
servers. They do this in an attempt to prevent spam from being sent from
their servers.

Again, in keeping with the short answer, and assuming that you want to learn
how to do this for yourself, I suggest that you go through each item in the
mail configuration area and explore it thoroughly being careful to listen
for any item that is labeled as a button. When you encounter any button,
even if it seems self explanatory, activate it and explore each item within
it. If you do this correctly, you will find that at times you will have
drilled down several levels which, can be a bit confusing, at first. Pay
special attention to any items that are labeled as pop-up buttons. Explore
the pop-ups especially if they have anything to do with security.

So, getting your SMTP server settings correct is not difficult but it can be
a bit tedious. In fact, one of my least favorite things to d

Dear Listers,

I have a facetime app on my iPhone 5C but I can't find anything like this
equivalent on my ipad mini. I assumed that facetime app would be there by
default. Do I have to download a special application to be able to do
facetime on iPad mini?

Thanks for any tips.

Explore

Time-Warner. Here's a link to an article from 2009 which explains the
situation
http://www.derekunderwood.com/using-e-mail-and-smtp-for-time-warner-road-runner-e-mail-accounts-outside-the-road-runner-network/

The above article also talks about how you can get the sending of email
to work on your iPhone through Time-Warner, but here's another article
that might be easier to read
http://www.examiner.com/article/how-to-set-up-roadrunner-email-on-an-iphone-ipad-or-android-device

I didn't see iPhone settings for EarthLink when I first Googled it, so I
thought something similar might be happening with EarthLink. I've
subsequently found the following article from EarthLink support that
explains how to set up your iPhone to work with EarthLink's email

you couldn't send mail if you were connected to the network via your cellular

an outgoing email server from another email provider, such as Google.

use that when you set up your account.

In fact, one of my least favorite things to do is to
configure mail server settings for unfamiliar domains and/

In fact, one of my least favorite things to do is to
configure mail server settings for unfamiliar domains and/or mail hosts.

Subject: I Can Receive Email On My Phone But Cannot Send Email From My Phone

All:
For years I have been able to receive email on my iPhone and have not been
able to send email. I've finally decided that I need to address this
problem. When I try to send an email, I get an error message that indicates
that my username and/or password for the SMTP server is incorrect. I've
checked the username and password and they are typed correctly. I have a
gmail account and an earthlink account and neither will let me send. My ISP
is Comcast/Xfinity. Any suggestions as to what I can try would be greatly
appreciated.

All you do is type the number you want to send to, flick to the text field,
double tap, write your text, and you should be able to send. Companies do
this all the time, so there is no reason it shouldn't go through. I have
done it on occasion.

Hello list

I got an sms from the tv company saying I can send an sms to a 5 digit
number to activate a new service. When I go to messaging and then compose I
type the 5 digits into the "to" field but then there is no field for the
text of the message. Can someone please explain how to do this or must I

Re: Is It Me? or is there a bug in the native Voice Memos App

2014-08-14 Thread Mike Arrigo
It's not just you, mine does this too, you can double tap the headset
button to switch to the speaker, but it is annoying.

Original message:

Hello All,

Today, I made a quick recording in the Voice Memos app. Try as I may, I
could not get the recording to playback on my phones speaker, located at the
bottom of the device.

I toggled the 1 button I found from Headset to Speaker yet, when Speaker was
selected, audio would come from the earpiece area located above the display.

Am I missing something here? I do remember that, at some point in the past,
I was able to make a recording and then simply play it back for all to hear
via the speakerphone feature.

Is It Me? or Is There a bug in the native Voice Memos App.

Confused and most Befuddled,

Mark

wonderful accessibility update to move fitness app

2014-08-14 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello,

I've loved the Move app
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/move-daily-activity-to-stay/id555994760?mt=8
since I got it from AppsGoneFree a year and a half ago. It's a fitness app that
prompts you to do specific exercises throughout the day at the interval you
set. The exercises are chosen at random. For instance, at 9:20, you might be
asked to do 25 crunches, at 10:20, you might be asked to walk up and down 4
flights of stairs, etc. The app was always reasonably accessible, but there
were a few issues. I pointed these out to the developer, and he has fixed them
in an update that came out this morning.

This is a great app for anyone who wants to get in a little better shape and
doesn't want to do a long workout at any one time. You can buy additional
exercises to get more variety, and you can remove exercises you don't like so
that the app won't propose them. And if it suggests one you don't want to do,
you can ask for a new one. And with these accessibility improvements, it's
particularly good. Thanks so much to the developer, Kevin Holesh, for making
such a good and accessible app!

Cheers,
Anna

Thanks. I like Group Mail for distribution lists, but I will go check out

RE: sending an email attachment on my iPhone

2014-08-14 Thread Richard Turner
I use an app called Group Mail. It is great for setting up distribution
lists, but it also can be used to send attachments.
It is a little tedious, but since Dropbox allows for the "Open In" option,
you can open a file in Group Mail and then it will be available to send from
within the app as an attachment rather than sending the link.
I don't know what the current price is for the app.
I've not used Quick Office, so I can't compare to that for ease of use, etc.
HTH,
Richard

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if there is any way to send an attachment by email on my
iPhone. I have an invoice that I have to send to a facility every month. I
have to change the date and then send it to them. For now, I am doing it on
my windows computer, but, would like to be able to do it on my phone if
possible. I have filed the invoice in my dropbox. If I send it that way,
the people who receive it will have to download the file, correct? It only
sends the link, right? Any advice is appreciated.

Hello,

When you speak with Earthlink tech support, make sure you get the correct port
number. For example, the Gmail's outgoing SMTP port is usually 465. However,
there can be other ports to use and the pop configuration ports are different.

2014-08-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

In fact, one of my least favorite things to do is to
configure mail server settings for unfamiliar domains and/or mail hosts.
