Re: Can you download Alex and other high quality voices on to an iPhone 5c?

2014-12-13 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Does the processor of the 6 make a noticeable difference in speed to those who
have moved up from a 5C or a 5S? I guess there must be a noticeable difference
for those who have moved straight from a 4S. Anyway, I'd be interested in
comments.

All high quality or enhanced quality voices are available on phones with 32
bit processors, like the 5C 5, and 4S.
Alex can only be downloaded on devices with 64 bit processors, like iPhone
5S, 6, 6 plus, iPad air 2, etc.
The determining factor is the processor.

Re: Traveling with iPhone 6

2014-12-13 Thread Don Breda

I have the same Battery and its great! but one piece of advice.

Don't use a 30 pin to lightning adapter on that battery.

It will think your charging a device as soons as you plug the adapter in.

I tried that and it told me it was charging as soon as I plugged the
adapter in.

To bad but it makes sense.

As for the 20 pin connector it is not very useful with my 5S and the
adaptor is too expensive. I am considering a 6 inch USB to lightning
cable for $9.95 from the people who make the SoapBox. I use the
micro USB connector all the time to charge my JamBox mini, my Bluiz 2
bone conduction headset and also my Bluetooth transmitter that I use
on other devices that have an earphone jack but are not Bluetooth. I
also like the idea that I can unfold the prongs and plug it in a wall
socket and recharge it in only 4 hours. Of course, I also sometimes
use the USB connector to recharge from my computer if necessary.

The talking battery is from MyCharge and it’s called Summit. I am not
sure, however, if the current model still talks because I think I
heard that the updated model did not to so any more. I have the old
version which has attached short cables for Micro USB and it also has
a 30-Pin Apple connector. This was a nice feature when I still had my
4S because I didn’t even need an additional cable. I guess I could get
a 30 Pin to Lightning adapter, but I have not done so because given
it’s price I just don’t think it’s worth it and eventually all
batteries wear out so most likely my next one either just has ports to
plug in a cable or I’ll buy one with a Lightning cable. Being able to
push the button on the battery and hear “Battery is full” or “Battery
is less than 50%” and so on is a nice feature, but not crutial. I
assume one could probably use an app like Tap Tap See to get feedback
as to how many LED’s are lit up and get information about the battery
status that way or just asking somebody is of course always a good
alternative.

There are many such devices, and I think the key point here is how
much juice you would like.

The more capacity, the larger the device has to be. I have an Anker
20,000 MhA battery which charges the iPhone several times, because I
am sometimes travelling for 24-36 hours at a time. It has four USB
ports and can even fully charge my iPad.

If your requirements a less dramatic, there are some much smaller
versions with less capacity. The Anker packs get very good reviews,
and so do the LimeAide devices. My fiancee has a 12,000 MhA one from
LimeAid. It works well and is a lot smaller than mine.

There is also a model from another manufacturer that talks, but its
capacity I think is only 6,00 MhA, which should be fine if you only
need to charge the phone once.

Re: drum/rhythm app?

2014-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
While it hasn't been updated in a long time, GigDaddy $2.99 has a good drum
machine, but is also a multi-track recorder.
It still works with iOS 8 though it hasn't been updated since 2011.
If you search for free drum machine there are tons of free apps you could try
out that would probably be less complex than GigDaddy.
Good luck,
Richard

download own ringtones to iPhone

2014-12-13 Thread Davy Cuppens

Hi folks

I am trying to add ringtones to my iPhone.
1. I have made an mp3 file of 6 seconds with mp3directcut and saved to my
hard disk.

2. I added the file to my itunes library and that went fine.
3. I searched for the file rightclick on it and make it to a aac format
version.
4. I renamed the file in windows with the extention m4r in the unknown album
directory.

5. I copied the file also into the tones directory of Itunes Media.
6. My iPhone got synchronised by itunes and I specified to sync all tones.
However, the tone won't sync and is also not visible in the tones in Itunes.
What am I doing wrong? It is a small mp3 to m4r file of which I want to make
an sms tone.

Regards
Davy

hallelujah- I'm getting there

2014-12-13 Thread Deidre Muccio
I had a cup of coffee late in the day yesterday and was up until 2 AM
playing with the iPhone. I found the Music app and saw the free stuff you
could listen to, or buy, courtesy I Tunes. The categories and playing screen
was pretty easy to navigate - I hope they change that up sometimes. Maybe if
I hit the like button on things I really like, it will influence what it
will show me? I went to Safari and was overwhelmed. I Hit on item chooser
but had forgotten how to go through the alphabetized list I had read about.
When I saw the search field in Music as well as Safari, I tried typing, and
voila, I could do it. Only thing is I could not find the equivalent of a
back space button for deleting misspelled characters. I guess I'll go into
settings and check auto correct which normally I don't like. I was pretty
sure there was also a dictate button or a way to use Siri to tell it what
you wanted to search for, but I didn't get that going. It's back to Dresner
for a second or third read. Today might be a very welcome breakthrough day.

Yesterday I looked at reviews on Amazon for the blue tooth
headset some recommended here. It was the $100 (down to $79) most recent
model by Plantronics. There were some definite drawbacks. One drawback of
on-line shopping is that you don't know exactly what you've got until it is
in hand. Unfortunately, there are no computer stores within walking distance
of where I live.

I had a cup of coffee late in the day yesterday and was up until 2 AM playing
with the iPhone. I found the Music app and saw the free stuff you could listen
to, or buy, courtesy I Tunes. The categories and playing screen was pretty easy
to navigate - I hope they change that up sometimes. Maybe if I hit the like
button on things I really like, it will influence what it will show me? I went
to Safari and was overwhelmed. I Hit on item chooser but had forgotten how to
go through the alphabetized list I had read about. When I saw the search field
in Music as well as Safari, I tried typing, and voila, I could do it. Only
thing is I could not find the equivalent of a back space button for deleting
misspelled characters. I guess I'll go into settings and check auto correct
which normally I don't like. I was pretty sure there was also a dictate button
or a way to use Siri to tell it what you wanted to search for, but I didn't get
that going. It's back to Dresner for a second or third read. Today might be a
very welcome breakthrough day.

Yesterday I looked at reviews on Amazon for the blue tooth
headset some recommended here. It was the $100 (down to $79) most recent model
by Plantronics. There were some definite drawbacks. One drawback of on-line
shopping is that you don't know exactly what you've got until it is in hand.
Unfortunately, there are no computer stores within walking distance of where I
live.

RE: Looking for a free, or cheap, accessible barcode reader

2014-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
Actually, the original price of DigitEyes was $29.99, then they reduced the
entire package to $19.99 and there are a couple component parts that are $9.99.
I always recommend folks go for the full package.
I noticed on my 5S running iOS 8.1.2 that it is much faster than it used to be.
They do keep working on it and the database of codes is one of the most
complete there is.

But, it will never be as fast as a stand alone barcode reader like the ID
Mates. But, $19.99 compared to $1,250 or so is worth being a bit slower.

There are, apparently, some Bluetooth scanners that will interface with
DigitEyes but they are not cheap. They have information on their web site.

Me thinks you made a typo, unless the price has changed. It is $29.99,
which is a heck of a good deal, as it includes all of the features that the
free version does not.

2014-12-13 Thread Terrie Terlau
Hi Diedre,

Often, the delete button is on the very right edge fairly near the bottom, to
the right of the p and slightly down. It works like the backspace in that it
deletes the character you are on and then to the left. The exception is when
you are typing a phone number in the dial pad when the delete key is on the
right bbut fairly near the top of the screen slightly above the first row of
numbers. The dictate button is often to the left of the spacebar whenyou are
in an edit field or in a file where you can input.

Be patient with yourself as you learn! I had to learn the iPad for work before
getting an iPhone and I truly thought I was going to throw the thing through
myoffice window more than a few times (smile)!

RE: hallelujah- I'm getting there

2014-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
The first time after installing iOS 8.1 or maybe it was just 8, when I
attempted to dictate I was asked to give it access to the microphone.

I’m not finding any setting, so get into a text edit area where you have the
keyboard showing.

See if you can find the dictate button to the left of the spacebar. It is very
small, so move your finger very slowly.

Or, try a two finger double tap and if you here a ding, say what you want to
dictate and then do another two finger double tap.

That should do it and if it needs permission to access the microphone, a
message will pop up.

Yes, I noticed that about the radio and adding artists - I'd momentarily
forgotten I could do that, and got distracted when I kept typing in b instead
of v for David, as in David Bowie! Where do I go to enable the dictate button?

On Behalf Of Richard Turner
Actually, the dictate button is just to the left of the spacebar if dictation
is enabled.

It sounds like you discovered the Apple Radio where you can listen to music.

You can create your own stations by searching for an artist you like and then
it will pick out other artists/songs that are close to that style.

Re: Traveling with iPhone 6

2014-12-13 Thread Pommette
Thanks everyone. Do the batteries with more power recharge the phone faster, or
is it just a matter of keeping the external battery attached to the phone? And
how solid do the ones you're recommending here feel when attached? You know
how sometimes they stick out or feel like they might break off? Maybe that's
why there are cases :-) I guess I'm looking for a hands-on sense of what
they're like on the road. Thanks!

oterbox verses lifeproof cases

2014-12-13 Thread Jed Barton

Hey gang,

As i look to get the iphone 6, obviously a case is a big concern. I've
had an oterbox with the tactile screen protecter from AT guys. Is this
an option for the life proof case, or no.
I am really impressed with the life proof case, given that it's water
proof, but wanted some input. Someone said that if you take the screen
protecter out of the life proof case, it's no longer water proof. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: making a phone call

2014-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
If she checks near the call end call button, there is a button to show keypad.
It is a bit challenging to hear the numbers over the instructions from the
service you are calling.
If it is a place she calls regularly, and the options are consistant, you can
program them into the phone number.
Edit the phone number in the contacts, then at the lower left of the keypad
there is a shift key, double tap that, or if she is using touch typing, just
touch and lift, then just above that she will find a comma. Each comma
represents a pause. It seems to be about 3 to 5 seconds, I'm not exactly sure.
So put in one or more commas, then the number that needs to be pressed and so
on.
It may take a little trial and error, but once it is working, you don't have to
mess with trying to enter numbers while listening to the recorded menu.

HTH,
Richard

Re: hallelujah- I'm getting there

2014-12-13 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Hi,

You seem to have had some answers here but the one you may still be missing is
how to delete a wrong character.

You need to slide your finger up the right-hand side of the keyboard, just a
little way, passing the Return key as you go, and there's a delete button
there. It is quite small so go slowly at first, to get used to finding it.

If you have some text selected, it will delete that text. If you just want to
delete a previous character when writing in a text field, just slide your
finger onto it then lift it and the character you have just deleted will be
announced.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, there are no computer stores within walking distance of where I
live.

RE: Can you download Alex and other high quality voices on to an iPhone 5c?

2014-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Carol,

Coming from anything less than a 5S you would notice a difference. The
difference between the A7 processor of the 5S and the A8 of the 6 and 6 Plus is
minor. In benchmark tests there is a difference of 20 to 25%, but I doubt you
would notice much in day-to-day use. Those who do say there is a significant
difference are probably experiencing this because maybe setting up a new iPhone
6 has improved the overall performance just as it may have done if they had
wiped their 5S and reinstalled it.

Does the processor of the 6 make a noticeable difference in speed to those who
have moved up from a 5C or a 5S? I guess there must be a noticeable difference
for those who have moved straight from a 4S. Anyway, I'd be interested in

All high quality or enhanced quality voices are available on phones with 32
bit processors, like the 5C 5, and 4S.

Alex can only be downloaded on devices with 64 bit processors, like iPhone 5S,

Thanks. My wife is sighted so the initial set up and whatnot is no real
concern. I’d just like to know how accessible the system is for a blind
customer. Either with the devices themselves or on the PC or iOS device. I’d
like to be able to access whatever it is I would need to if something should
happen or disable something should I accidently set something off, etc. I
know they do have a money back guarantee which is indeed nice, but it would
be good to be able to get any sort of feedback beforehand.

I don't know what parts of the iPhone app work.

But, they did send me a remote control that you use on the computer to
program their system. It was kind of accessible with Jaws, so you
conceivably could add new devices and designate which zone they would be in.
But, the accessibility was borderline, so I'd probably want a set of
eyeballs to confirm that things were set up correctly before putting it
on-line.

The only thing I don't like about Simply Safe is that their software and
hardware is proprietary, and the monitoring company they use only has one
location. They claim they stayed up and running during Hurricane Sandy, but
it just worries me that they only have one center.

RE: 6+

2014-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jessica,

There are really only 3 main differences: first of all the size would be the
most noticeable difference. Second is battery life which is double or close to
double in a 6 Plus because it has a 2,900 MAH battery which vs the 1,560 MAH in
a 5S and lastly the camera has optical image stabilization which may or may not
help with apps like KNFB Reader and so on. I still haven't seen a definitive
article on whether it really does make a difference and I think maybe it could
make a difference for people who don't have a steady hand, but if you can hold
your iPhone still then it probably won't make that much of a difference. Then
of course there are things like the power button which on the 6 Plus is on the
right side at the top rather than on the top at the right corner and the 6 Plus
has somewhat better speakers.

As for the processor, the 6 Plus has the A8 processor, but in benchmark tests
the difference between the A7 processor which is in the 5S and which is already
a 64 Bit processor and the A8 is only about 20 to 25% and I doubt you will find
that this increase will make much of a difference in day-to-day use. Most
things on a 5S only take a few seconds so I guess if something took 5 seconds
like maybe recognizing a larger document in KNFB Reader, it may take only 4
seconds on a 6 Plus. I certainly think that upgrading from a 5S to a 6 Plus is
a waste of money for most people, only situation where it might make sense was
for somebody who really depends on getting the best possible battery life or
maybe if you do tons of typing and you totally can master direct touch typing
with the phone in landscape mode on a table in front of you or maybe using
braille input in the same way.

Sieghard

RE: download own ringtones to iPhone

2014-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Davy,

You still have to make sure the tone is actually added to yoru Tones library.
If it doesn't show up in Tones in iTunes it means it has not been added. You
can add it either by going to it in your Tones folder and just pressing enter
on it so it plays in iTunes or you can open iTunes, go to the File menu, then
select Add File to Library. Now browse to your iTunes Media\Tones folder, find
the ringtone and then tab to Select and activate it. Now your tone should show
up in the tones library and if you selected to sync all tones it should synbc
across to your phone next time you do a sync.

You don't have to have the tone in any other locations other than your Tones
folder so you can delete it if it's still in your music library. Let me know if
this worked.

Hi folks

I am trying to add ringtones to my iPhone.
1. I have made an mp3 file of 6 seconds with mp3directcut and saved to my hard
disk.
2. I added the file to my itunes library and that went fine.
3. I searched for the file rightclick on it and make it to a aac format version.
It is a small mp3 to m4r file of which I want to make an
sms tone.

I would probably not buy a small external battery with a fixed lightning
connector. If you use a battery where you have to use your regular lightning
cable or even if you buy one of the short 6 inch ones then there is a lot less

Thanks everyone. Do the batteries with more power recharge the phone faster, or
is it just a matter of keeping the external battery attached to the phone? And
how solid do the ones you're recommending here feel when attached? You know
how sometimes they stick out or feel like they might break off? Maybe that's
why there are cases :-) I guess I'm looking for a hands-on sense of what
they're like on the road. Thanks!

RE: making a phone call

2014-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Using a headset may help in terms of hearing Voiceover over your call. If my
keypad is hidden I usually touch just above the home key and find the End Call
button, then I swipe left until I get to keypad or you can just touch the phone
about where the volume down button is and you should find the keypad button
there. The following is a list of the buttons you have on the screen during a
call if the keypad is hidden (that is from top to bottom):

Name/number for your call
Time elapsed
Mute
Keypad
Selected, Speaker
Add Call
Facetime
Contacts
End Call

I put selected in front of Speaker because this is what Voiceover says if
speakerphone is active, it will just say Speaker if it is not, e.g. if you
are using a headset.
If you touch End Call above the home key, you would have to swipe left 5 times
to get to the Keypad button.

I hope this helps, sometimes I find it much easier to find something if I know
what is there and I can visualize what the screen layout looks like.

Sieghard

Subject: making a phone call

A friend of mine is frustrated because she wants to make phone calls
where there is a tree which means you have to push numbers to get
where you want to go in the menu on the call. She can't find the
numbers to push when she is on the call; and I rarely do this on my
phone. Doesn't she have to have her keypad showing to do that and how
can she get it to show up once she has enter the call with the options
she needs to do?
Thanks,
Patti

I am someone who has steadfastly refused to join Facebook. However, I find
that there are a few individuals or groups I would like to follow, and they
are posting only to Facebook. So, the question. What is the most efficient
way, using an iPhone or a Mac, to read things you want to read, minimize the
junk, and minimize privacy problems? What app works best? I don't want to
post. I just want to follow those few individuals or groups whose ideas and

Using the face book integration on the mac will not work for this. If you use
iCloud, you can create an alias to use with face book under your iCloud
account. ON the other hand, there are 2 very accessible desk top apps for the
mac.
Menu tab pro. I bought it back in 2011 and it was 2 bucks. Don’t know what it
cost now. There is another that just came out a couple weeks ago. It’s called
current for face book.
if you type current in the search box on the mac app store, it should be the
first result you get. HTH

I noticed on my 5S running iOS 8.1.2 that it is much faster than it used to

They do keep working on it and the database of codes is one of the most
 complete there is.

But, it will never be as fast as a stand alone barcode reader like the ID
Mates. But, $19.99 compared to $1,250 or so is worth being a bit slower.

There are, apparently, some Bluetooth scanners that will interface with
DigitEyes but they are not cheap. They have information on their web site.

RE: hallelujah- I'm getting there

2014-12-13 Thread Deidre Muccio
Carol

I'm playing with all this now. I'm using the double tap to choose a letter.
With phone in hand I will reread the section in Dresner that talks about
this, including selecting more than a single character, what you must be
thinking of as selecting text. I went back to music though and found the
dictation button after I practiced typing. I got all the letters right for
the name of the band/artist but turned nothing up. Plus I didn't remember
how to tell it to search for what I'd written. All the same, whatever I hit
on did result in being told that there were no results. Was it a double
tap to tell it to go ahead and search? The double tap is what I did to enter
the edit field I think and it was what I did once in the search field to
turn dictation on and off. I love dictation but I am also thrilled however
that I can now type. Funny thing is that I did not practice at all for over
a week - I just stopped trying planning to come back to it. In that period
of time, my own cellular coordinates reorganized themselves and now I can
find the letters just fine. In dog training and likely with people as well,
they call this latent learning.

Hi,

You seem to have had some answers here but the one you may still be missing
is how to delete a wrong character.

You need to slide your finger up the right-hand side of the keyboard, just
a little way, passing the Return key as you go, and there's a delete
button there. It is quite small so go slowly at first, to get used to
finding it.

If you have some text selected, it will delete that text. If you just want
to delete a previous character when writing in a text field, just slide your
finger onto it then lift it and the character you have just deleted will be
announced.

Re: Looking for a free, or cheap, accessible barcode reader

2014-12-13 Thread Charles Rivard
It takes a bit of practice, because the bar codes are very small. You may
have to slowly back away from the item to be scanned, to a distance of 8
inches or so. Move the camera with a steady hand, and the key is, slowly!
When you're almost right on the bar code, Digit-Eyes will give a beep, and
then if it finds the bar code, it will begin to read the result that it
found in the database through the Internet.

I noticed on my 5S running iOS 8.1.2 that it is much faster than it used

They do keep working on it and the database of codes is one of the most
complete there is.

But, it will never be as fast as a stand alone barcode reader like the ID

There are, apparently, some Bluetooth scanners that will interface with

Me thinks you made a typo, unless the price has changed. It is $29.99,
which is a heck of a good deal, as it includes all of the features that
the

free version does not.

Re: IOS 8.1.2 (cannot open Contacts using VoiceOver)

2014-12-13 Thread Melanie Clouser
I’ve done all that. I’ve even gone into the settings to check out things there.
The checkbox to show Contacts in the App Switcher is now grayed out. I cannot
turn it back on. It was initially turned on when I first upgraded to IOS 8.1
weeks ago. But, now I can’t even turn it back on. The only thing I can think of
doing is resetting settings but I’m not sure that will work for the app opening
 r closing.

OK. I tried having Siri opening Contacts. It didn’t work. Then tried opening
the Contacts myself…it didn’t work. Then, I handed the phone to my niece. She
opened it without VoiceOver being on. So, I tried it again. And, it showed me
to be an idiot to my 13 year old niece. It worked fine. You don’t know how many
times I’ve tried opening Contacts. Shutting down the phone. Turning VoiceOver
on and off. Going into the Settings. Nothing since upgrading. And, all of a
sudden it works. Go figure!

Re: Is Keyboard issue fix on 8.1.2?

2014-12-13 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
It's been generally fine for me but I have managed to produce the double
characters a few times. I think it may have to do with the way I (and possibly
others) interact with the keyboard. I'm talking specifically for me about the
Apple keyboard here, but I know others were having problems also. For me it
was in my interaction of the Quick Nav keys and/or making the phone keyboard
visible/not visible. I did try changing some of the harfd keyboard settings
but to no avail.

I couldn't get a pattern going for this double key action, try as I might this
afternoon. Others may want to play here. I feel I can't really comment much
further, apart from saying, again, that I still see the double characters on
occasions, until I have found a reason/pattern for the occurrence, so I'll be
glad of any other feedback on this one also. I'd like to think that, now I'm
using this keyboard once again on a more frequent basis, I might eliminate
these problems with correct interaction at the right times from myself.

If she checks near the call end call button, there is a button to show
keypad.
It is a bit challenging to hear the numbers over the instructions from the
service you are calling.
If it is a place she calls regularly, and the options are consistant, you
can program them into the phone number.
Edit the phone number in the contacts, then at the lower left of the keypad
there is a shift key, double tap that, or if she is using touch typing, just
touch and lift, then just above that she will find a comma. Each comma
represents a pause. It seems to be about 3 to 5 seconds, I'm not exactly
sure.
So put in one or more commas, then the number that needs to be pressed and
so on.
It may take a little trial and error, but once it is working, you don't have
to mess with trying to enter numbers while listening to the recorded menu.

Thanks,

RE: Looking for a free, or cheap, accessible barcode reader

2014-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
It takes patience and practice.
It also helps to have a general idea where the barcodes tend to be located.
On Canned goods, the barcode is usually very close to the seam in the label.
On boxes, they are usually on the bottom.
Bags are also usually near the seam.

It might help to get some sighted assistance if at all possible to get familiar
with which part fo the package to focus on.
The key is to start with the camera close to the item, then slowly, pull away
so that the autofocus can kick in. If you move too fast or from side to side,
the autofocus won't ever take over.

Good luck,
Richard

I noticed on my 5S running iOS 8.1.2 that it is much faster than it used to

They do keep working on it and the database of codes is one of the most
 complete there is.

But, it will never be as fast as a stand alone barcode reader like the ID

There are, apparently, some Bluetooth scanners that will interface with

CREATING AN ALIAS WHEN USING ICLOUD

2014-12-13 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
I noticed in a recent mail about FaceBook, it was suggested that you could
create an Alias (presumably addresses) using ICloud. How many addresses are we
actually allowed to have? This could be quite a useful tool to me in signing
up for certain information but getting rid of spammers more permanently when
the mailing for which I originally signed up (and subsequent spam mailings from
others) isn't needed any more.

I hope those of you who understand these things better than I can comment on
this one. I know there are other methods/online services from which you can
obtain an address which won't give out any of your private information, but
they look a tad complicated for me and I just want some easy but efficient
fixes for me particularly in cutting down the spammers. There are only so many
you can block and I'm thinking that it might just be better to have Alias's
that one can discard.

If I'm off the mark here, forgive me, and I hope it's suitably within the scope
of the list, since the question concerns ICloud Alias's in particular.

Re: hallelujah- I'm getting there

2014-12-13 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
When you go into an edit field, you do double tap at that point. Then you
enter your search word(s) and need either to find a Search button in some
apps or usually the Enter key works here.

I was thinking that you were in fact in an editfield and did want to delete a
character, in which case the delete key here is what you want. Once you select
text (which may be a few letters or lots more, then again you can tap the
delete key and it will all go.

Selecting and deleting text is really quite difficult to achieve,
and I would suggest, if you're going to use an external keyboard, you may
want to get used to this process (which is so much easier) doing it this way
first at any rate.

If you really need to do it without an additional hard keyboard, using the
onboard keyboard, there are a number of things you can do and we can all help
you here. Please just explain exactly what you're needing for the moment.

I am thrilled to see your progress.

I’m playing with all this now. I’m using the double tap to choose a letter.
With phone in hand I will reread the section in Dresner that talks about this,
including selecting more than a single character, what you must be thinking of
as selecting text. I went back to music though and found the dictation button
after I practiced typing. I got all the letters right for the name of the
band/artist but turned nothing up. Plus I didn’t remember how to tell it to
search for what I’d written. All the same, whatever I hit on did result in
being told that there were “no results.” Was it a double tap to tell it to go
ahead and search? The double tap is what I did to enter the edit field I think
and it was what I did once in the search field to turn dictation on and off. I
love dictation but I am also thrilled however that I can now type. Funny thing
is that I did not practice at all for over a week – I just stopped trying
planning to come back to it. In that period of time, my own cellular
coordinates reorganized themselves and now I can find the letters just fine. In
dog training and likely with people as well, they call this latent learning.

  Hi,

You seem to have had some answers here but the one you may still be missing
is how to delete a wrong character.

You need to slide your finger up the right-hand side of the keyboard, just a
little way, passing the Return key as you go, and there's a delete button
there. It is quite small so go slowly at first, to get used to finding it.

If you have some text selected, it will delete that text. If you just want
to delete a previous character when writing in a text field, just slide your
finger onto it then lift it and the character you have just deleted will be
announced.

Re: IOS 8.1.2 (cannot open Contacts using VoiceOver)

2014-12-13 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Do I presume you've always opened Contacts OK before? If so then maybe this
won't help.

I havfe found on occasions, since IOS8, that it's been necessary to ensure
I've actually been tapping on the button, rather than anywhere on the
screen. Just tapping anywhere on the screen in these situations, after
hearing the last item spoken which was the one that I'd wanted, just hasn't
worked. It hasn't occurred with Contacts in my case and in fact I can't
remember the last time I saw it now; but I do know it's not just been a
case of hearing the last item as Contacts and double tapping the screen
anywhere but actually finding the Contacts and positioning my finger on it
to open.

You might want to give it a go.

I don't think it's a good work around myself and it shouldn't be necessary
to position a finger on particular buttons to double tap them, but it
sometimes is, so I live with it!

something new to me in the app switcher

2014-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
I'm wondering if this is new to iOS 8.1.2. Open the app switcher, touch the
screen with three fingers. Normally this just tells you where you are on a
page, how many rows are showing, that kind of thing. In the app switcher, it
tells you how many apps are open and which number has focus. Like, app 3 of 5.
I accidentally touched with three fingers and heard that. I'd never used that
gesture in the app switcher before. It will be a useful way to quickly find out
how many apps are open, especially when working with someone relatively new to
using the app switcher.

I'm wondering if this is new to iOS 8.1.2. Open the app switcher, touch the
screen with three fingers. Normally this just tells you where you are on a

tells you how many apps are open and which number has focus. Like, app 3 of 5.

I will have to pay attention to this irregularity. Never had a problem before

I havfe found on occasions, since IOS8, that it's been necessary to ensure

Just tapping anywhere on the screen in these situations, after hearing the
last item spoken which was the one that I'd wanted, just hasn't worked. It
hasn't occurred with Contacts in my case and in fact I can't remember the
last time I saw it now; but I do know it's not just been a case of hearing
the last item as Contacts and double tapping the screen anywhere but
actually finding the Contacts and positioning my finger on it to open.

You might want to give it a go.

I don't think it's a good work around myself and it shouldn't be necessary to
position a finger on particular buttons to double tap them, but it sometimes
is, so I live with it!

You don’t know how
many times I’ve tried opening Contacts. Shutting down the phone. Turning
VoiceOver on and off. Going into the Settings. Nothing since upgrading. And,
all of a sudden it works. Go figure!

Re: Looking for a free, or cheap, accessible barcode reader

2014-12-13 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I'm wondering if you have gone to the website and read the tips on finding the
barcodes? I have been a user of Digit-Eyes from the very beginning when it was
released. It takes practice to find the barcodes, but there are general
concepts that I use depending upon what type of item I am attempting to scan.
Can labels will have a seam that the edge will flap over from right to left.
Usually, the barcode is to the left of this and toward the bottom. On square
boxes, one can find the barcode opposite from the flap where one would open the
box. I usually turn the box so the bottom is facing up and will start trying to
find the barcode on the left side. These are just general tips and not all
items will follow this. Digit-Eyes is only one app that I can choose from to
obtain information on an item and is not the only app I'll use. It's nice to
have several apps in my bag of tricks to get the job done. The best thing about
Digit-Eyes is that I can create my own barcode labels and afix them to
different items. HTH.

Cheers,
Eileen

An interesting thing I found out today when I did a reset all settings

2014-12-13 Thread Wren Langley
After I hit the reset all settings button the phone rebooted and voiceover came
on. However, I had to enable Siri, which has never happened before. Usually
Siri has been on when I have done a reset all settings. I also had to
re-enabled dictation. Just wanted to put this in here in case some of you run
into a problem when you do the reset all settings. I also had to go into the
voiceover settings and reset the triple click home button. That was not enabled
either after doing a reset all settings. With this new occurrence, it's a good
thing voiceover comes on when he reset all settings is done because if it did
not you could not turn it on using the phone. God bless, Wren Langley

Reading A Particular Translation of the Bible In Braille

2014-12-13 Thread Keith Bundy
Hello, all. As a pastor and Bible study teacher, I want to read the Bible using
my iPhone 5 s and the current IOS along with a Brailliant display. I have the
Bible app from LifeChurch, but I preher the NIV 1984 edition.

I have downloaded this from Bookshare with VoiceDream Reader, but find the
percentage figures given when pages are changing to be extremely annoying, not
to mention the stoppage in reading makes me feel very awkward when I am
attempting to read aloud.

I also downloaded this version in Read2Go but can't figure out how to find a
specific Scripture passage. When I click search and type in a passage (such as
Mark 9), it says Empty list.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for how I can resolve this issue? Thanks
much.

I'm wondering if this is new to iOS 8.1.2. Open the app switcher, touch the
screen with three fingers. Normally this just tells you where you are on a
page, how many rows are showing, that kind of thing. In the app switcher, it
tells you how many apps are open and which number has focus. Like, app 3 of
 5.
I accidentally touched with three fingers and heard that. I'd never used that
gesture in the app switcher before. It will be a useful way to quickly find
out how many apps are open, especially when working with someone relatively
new to using the app switcher.
