Re: New iPad Air 2

2015-01-01 Thread Katey Glass
Hello Todd,

After 2 days of playing phone tag with Zack, we were able to have an
interesting discussion last night. It seems as if this is in fact a new bug in
iOS 8!!!I would encourage you to let them know if you haven't already. If
you have you I are a part of a small number of people who have reported this
bug.

I'm really impressed with the length Zack went to to replicate this bug! I
told him I thought it was a connection between Zoom VoiceOver which only
started after iOS 8. As the two worked well and as expected in iOS 7. I'd
never updated my old iPad and don't use my iPhone 6 Plus in landscape mode so
hadn't tried it until I noticed that the same thing happened on both devices.

With this information Zack tried turning on zoom Voiceover at home on his
personal iPad that was running iOS 7 and it worked as it used to. He then did
the same thing on his wife's iPad running a later version of 7 and it worked as
it should.

He went back to work tried it on a number of devices running iOS 8 and there
was the dreaded problem!!! With Zoom and VoiceOver the bug was there! He
then went to talk to some engineers who did the same thing on a number of
devices and they all saw it!

As I said I encourage you to report this bug! He said a small number of
people have reported it but because he cared enough about it and brought it to
keep people's attention they are escalating the priority of this issue!!! He
also has said he'll be in touch with me in the future and he likes building
relationships with people. So he encouraged me to keep his information and
report other issues to him. He also told me I was excellent at isolating the
issue. As I said only a tiny number of people reported this, 37! So
normally this bug would be last on the list but it's being given priority since
it worked so well before.

Unfortunately for now those of us who use zoom voiceover have to use them one
at a time!

Katey.

Sorry I'm coming in on this late but I experienced the same issue with the 3
finger swipe when in horizontal orientation if Zoom is enabled. Trying to
scroll through a list of items is impossible but works in portrait
orientation. Turning Zoom off fixes the issue for me, which is a pain since
then if I need to zoom I have to turn VO off and use standard pinch to zoom.
This seems to have started with iOS 8 for me.

2015-01-01 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello All,

Thanks for the suggestions. I was expecting the solution of using either
Kurzweil 1000 or OpenBook 9, which I do have both of. I suppose I could take
the pages out of the binding, but I was hoping to keep it in tack. I actually
got a very accurate scan with the StandScan Pro without using its lights and
only the camera flash from the KNFB Reader. I will give Bookshare a call and
see what the process is for one of their volunteers to scan the cookbook. In
the past, when in grad school, I sometimes needed to purchase 2 copies, so the
person who was doing the scanning could do some markup. Again, thanks and I do
know that I can use the batch mode in KNFB Reader. I just don't know the
reliability of using this mode and if the app will crash in the middle of this
project. My sure bet is to use the PC. *Smile* Well, the only other idea I can
come up with is to find the index and get the page numbers to specific recipes
that look interesting and scan only those recipes. Thanks for the suggestions.

Cheers,
Eileen

If, KNFB is the only option, you might want to make sure that is fair
distance beetween the book and the camera/phone, to make sure that the phone
camera can ditact the whole page. Scanstand or Scanbox might pretty much
help, but, if it is a big thick book, you migh need other solution like
putting it on top of some stand that you improvise yourself, like a box or
something. Usually, allow your phone to have about 15/20CM or about 6
distance on top of the book and make sure you have plenty of light coming
through the pages. try scan it page by page, instead of two side page at the
 same time.

I agree that while KNFB Reader is an awesome app, there are projects where a
scanner solution is better just as you’d rent a moving truck if you want to
move rather than making 20 trips with the car. The ideal solution would be
to have a scanner with automatic document feeder and to destroy the book so
you can just run the pages through the scanner. I have a Fujitsu Scansnap
IX500 and while it would only scan to PDF, it is so super blazing fast and
does automatic souble sided scanning. If I had a paperback book with 300
pages I could probably scan that with that scanner in about 5 minutes and
then just use Openbook to recognize the single PDF file. I guess now that
Jaws does OCR on entire PDF documents you could even open the PDF in Adobe
Reader and tell Jaws to do the OCR. It would be interesting to see if that
 works.

What is the book you are trying to scan, Eileen?

I'd recommend waiting until the next update comes out that should include
retaining the format of the page.
The standscan might be the best choice of stands to attempt this, but in
reality, I'd recommend using a computer with OpenBook or Kurzweil software
 for that size project.
If you have a Bookshare membership, you could request that book and even
offer to send the print copy to a volunteer willing to to scan the book ...

I would add to this, also get the largest size hard drive you can afford even
if it means waiting and saving up for it. Why? People who practice I want
what I want and I want it now often regret it. With adding more and more apps,
email, and all the other stuff most of us put on our phones, it’s far better to
have it and not need it then to need it and not have it. If iPhones and iPads
used an SD card instead of a hard drive, it wouldn’t be a problem. Just get a
larger SD card or a second or third card. SD cards can get lostbut the hard
drive isn’t going anywhere.

  Deidre,

People have two iPhones or two phones with the same carrier when they have a
work phone and a home phone, so I actually do not think that is an issue.

So, I gather from what you said about the 4S, you are basically using it as a
wifi device only and not using it as a phone.

If that is the case, one thought would be to activate it as a phone and
replace whatever you are currently using as a phone with it and instead of
buying another phone, perhaps buy an iPad Mini, either the newest mini 2, or
the previous mini with retina display.

Use the phone for phone things, and use the mini for books, music etc. You
will have double the battery life at least with a mini.

Or, like you say, chuck both current phones, and get a new iPhone with enough
memory for what you want to do and go with a lower cost plan through someone
like t-mobile, Consumer Cellular, etc., where you would not be tied into a
contract.

There are tons of options. The first thing I would do is sort out exactly
what you want to be able to do. Then, do you want one device or two to
maintain, then talk with the different carriers and see what you can afford.

  Good luck,

  Richard

You who want to read tablature should check out LunarPro, a project designed to

RE: Threads: this is in response to the thread hijacking discussion of Bookshare to bria softphone

2015-01-01 Thread Alan Lemly
My own confusion with understanding thread hijacking came from using Outlook
on my computer for years for email. When you review emails individually in
POP format using Outlook, it is not clear when you reply to a message and
change the subject that you've run afoul of list etiquette. The new message
you created will be treated as such on your computer with Outlook when it's
downloaded via POP. However, as many more of us are now checking our email
using our iDevices in an IMAP environment, the hidden metadata in the
message continues to link it to its source thread and when the subject is
changed, the thread is hijacked causing the resulting irritation for those
checking mail with their iDevices' mail app.

I think sometimes people don't understand that if you reply to somebody's
message, what you write is part of that thread. I know that years ago when I
started emailing I didn't understand this at all. If you want to start a new
topic and not hijack somebody's thread, it isn't enough to just change the
subject line. You need to start a new email with your new subject rather
than doing it as a reply to some other message to that list. I remember
early on in my Internet experience having somebody really bawl me out for
this and it was pure ignorance on my part. You can argue whether I should
have known better, should have understood about threads on email lists, but
I truly didn't. I did finally figure it out one day on my own, but I don't
remember ever having it explained to me because it was assumed it should be
obvious.

I hope this helps anybody who doesn't understand about threads. The other
thing that often happens is that the focus of a thread does indeed change
but people don't bother to change the subject line.

Subject: Simply ask SIRI, was: AN INDEPENDENT PLUG FOR APPLEVIS
Hi Carol,

Another very easy way to find out what weekday a particular date is to simply
ask SIRI. I use this a lot for my business when I have to pay invoices and
maybe I have an invoice which is due on April 7 and I want to know if this is a
weekend or not. So, I simply invoke SIRI and ask “What day is April 7”. I just
did this as I am typing the message and SIRI replied “It’s Tuesday, April 7,
2015”.

If you are asking about a date which is in the future, but in the same year,
you don’t have to include the year when you ask. E.g. as it is January 1 today,
I can ask anything up to December 31, 2015 simply by asking “What date is July
3” or what date is October 25” without including “2015”. If I want to know what
day Christmas 1988 was, I would then have to include the year and ask “What day
was December 25, 1988” and the same applies if the date is beyond 2015.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi all,

I just want to tell everyone, in case we have newcomers, how very helpful I'm
finding both this list and also, for more clarification so often, the resources
of AppleVis with so many helpful useful and informative podcasts.

I have listened to a number of podcasts now and just today picked up an app
called DatePicker which is nice and simple and does just what I need it to do
right now, that is, to tell me what day of the week a particular date falls!
Thanks so much for this little gem. I hope others find it useful also. I
found it easily enough in the UK Store and there were only three listed. It
was the first!

For those additional resources, go to

RE: LINKING DROPVOX WITH DROPBOX

2015-01-01 Thread Alan Lemly
When you record something in DropVox, it automatically goes to a folder
named Apps\DropVox where it can be accessed from the Dropbox app. The
recording will be named in the format DV--mm-dd.mp3 where the
represents a 4-digit year, etc. So something recorded today will be named
DV-2015-01-01.mp3. Of course, you can easily access these files on your
computer and rename them as desired.

RE: Book Share

2015-01-01 Thread Deidre Muccio

Using these kinds of features are how I spend a lot of time in my life. I love
looking at the text so to speak, meaning how something is written, punctuated,
etc. I don’t know what my priorities are with the phone anymore. I’m almost
ready to chuck the old cell phone and go for signing up with some carrier. I
really want to be able to dictate messages and use the audio feature.

I’ve asked this before and never got an answer. Can I use more
than one phone at a time? For example I don’t have a data plan or minutes on
this old 4S and I could opt to just get a new phone with my current carrier
and use that for phone and whatever else I like. That won’t force me to
inactivate the one I’m currently using, will it? I know that this is not the
case if you are staying with the same carrier and have a cell phone already.
You can’t be using 2 phones but then as I say the phone I have right now
doesn’t even have a plan on it. Can I have 2 IPhones with a plan on it, that is
if I could afford that? …h, another thing, I might just see how Facetime
works today.

Happy New Year.

You don't have to worry about copying out quoted sections from a book. Even up
to an entire chapter, which is why Kindle, Nook, and iBooks can give you a
chapter to sample before buying.

You most definitely cannot copy an entire book and send it to someone. That is
clearly illegal, not to mention immoral.

But, you can copy as much as you want for your own uses, so no worries.

It does take some trial and error to get the hang of highlighting and or
copying quotes from a book in Voice Dream, but once you get the hang of it, it
is a fabulous feature.

You can even write your own notes tied to a highlight and export them as a text
file for yourself.

Happy reading,

Richard

I saw that option to select text within voice dream which I was surprised by
since sharing the text with others is against copyright laws according to the
long preface to all Bookshare downloads. Then, if as you are saying you are
simply highlighting and taking notes, those “fingerprints” (or do they call
them “watermarks”) don’t come into play! On my computer I do what you do all
the time. Using the phone and VD will be interesting, but then I’ll have to see
how the clipboard works. So many things to explore!

To add a little to this, if the book comes directly from the publisher, as I
understand it, there is no scanning involved. They donate the electronic copy
of the book, so unless there are mistakes in the printed version, you will not
find any in the publisher quality books on Bookshare.

I personally have found a lot of books that I prefer reading with Voice Dream
than listening to the human read audio voice. It is great being able to
highlight passages and then export those highlights to a text file so I have
the ability to discuss the book with others and have notes taken directly from
the book.

Voice Dream is easily my favorite and most used app.

number of phones, was about bookshare

2015-01-01 Thread Richard Turner
Deidre,
I've started a new thread since this isn't about Bookshare any longer.
People have two iPhones or two phones with the same carrier when they have a
work phone and a home phone, so I actually do not think that is an issue.
So, I gather from what you said about the 4S, you are basically using it as a
wifi device only and not using it as a phone.
If that is the case, one thought would be to activate it as a phone and replace
whatever you are currently using as a phone with it and instead of buying
another phone, perhaps buy an iPad Mini, either the newest mini 2, or the
previous mini with retina display.
Use the phone for phone things, and use the mini for books, music etc. You will
have double the battery life at least with a mini.
Or, like you say, chuck both current phones, and get a new iPhone with enough
memory for what you want to do and go with a lower cost plan through someone
like t-mobile, Consumer Cellular, etc., where you would not be tied into a
contract.
There are tons of options. The first thing I would do is sort out exactly what
you want to be able to do. Then, do you want one device or two to maintain,
then talk with the different carriers and see what you can afford.
Good luck,
Richard

Threads: this is in response to the thread hijacking discussion of Bookshare to bria softphone

2015-01-01 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I think sometimes people don't understand that if you reply to somebody's
message, what you write is part of that thread. I know that years ago when I
started emailing I didn't understand this at all. If you want to start a new
topic and not hijack somebody's thread, it isn't enough to just change the
subject line. You need to start a new email with your new subject rather than
doing it as a reply to some other message to that list. I remember early on in
my Internet experience having somebody really bawl me out for this and it was
pure ignorance on my part. You can argue whether I should have known better,
should have understood about threads on email lists, but I truly didn't. I did
finally figure it out one day on my own, but I don't remember ever having it
explained to me because it was assumed it should be obvious.

I hope this helps anybody who doesn't understand about threads. The other thing
that often happens is that the focus of a thread does indeed change but people
don't bother to change the subject line.

I'm at a loss trying to link my Dropbox with Dropvox by indicating a folder to

I've tried saying New folder and giving one but have also tried selecting a
folder I already have. When I have made a recording, I hear, Uploading to

can't find any recordings!

Please can anyone give me step by step here?

Re: Tv listings app for comcast?

2015-01-01 Thread David Cleveland
No I have not tried that customize feature. I generally just look at the
channel lineup and scroll through until I find the channels that I'm interested
in. This app is actually designed to control a remote control device but I find
it very helpful tips for getting channel listings.I would also highly recommend
the TV Guide app for looking up TV listings. It is not totally accessible but
it's pretty usable.

Okay, I believe I have the right app, and have established my account.
However, I do have a question. You are supposed to be able to customize your

view, or by editing individual channels.to that end, they supply a quote
channel wizard for deleting large groups, and the channel editor for
deleting individual channels. I have tried both of these, and nothing seems
to work. I can't tell with voiceover what is selected or not selected. When I
just experimented by trying to get rid of the adult and pay-per-view
categories by double tapping those, and saved it, nothing happened. Have you
 had luck with this?

Highjacked or not, was: bria softphone help

2015-01-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Hello Ari and Hank,

Unless I am missing something Hank is correct here and I think Ari must have
somehow assumed that the Bria softphone thread must be mixed in with the thread
about Bookshare. I just went to the archive and typed in the subject Bria
softphone help and the only posts that came up were the 7 messages starting
with Hank's original question, my reply, Ari's message that he was highjacking
the Bookshare thread and a few more. If Hank had replied to the Bookshare
thread, wouldn't those messages also have come up? Here is the link in the
archive and maybe Raul or Cara could clarify this once and foreall.

you want to start a new topic and not hijack somebody's thread, it
isn't enough to just change the subject line. You need to start a new

other message to that list. I remember early on in my Internet
experience having somebody really bawl me out for this and it was pure
ignorance on my part. You can argue whether I should have known
better, should have understood about threads on email lists, but I
truly didn't. I did finally figure it out one day on my own, but I
don't remember ever having it explained to me because it was assumed
it should be obvious.

I hope this helps anybody who doesn't understand about threads. The
other thing that often happens is that the focus of a thread does
indeed change but people don't bother to change the subject line.

I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:

his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

Re: Foldable BT keyboard

2015-01-01 Thread David Cleveland
I think the foldable keyboards are a good idea in theory but they don't really
work that well out in the real world. I have the verbatim keyboard and it never
really stable and less I had it on a flat surface like a table. I had wanted to
use it on my lap but it did not work too well that way.The main reason why I
cannot give a rating is because my verbatim keyboard recently cracked.I have
not even been using it for the last year and a half just been sitting in the
bottom of my backpack.then I took it out the other day to try to use it again
and it was broken into pieces.

 Hi listers,

Can anyone recommend a good foldable BT keyboard? I used to own a stoway
keyboard and like it very much. Unfortunately, it is no longer working.

I have friend loaned me a Microsoft BT keyboard, other recommended the
Logitech 811 keyboard, however, they are not foldable and may be little big
 to put in the pocket.

I am looking for something that can be folded. I do use it a lot in meeting
 and church.

Thanks in advance for the recommendation.

 Blessing,

AN INDEPENDENT PLUG FOR APPLEVIS

Re: Simply ask SIRI, was: AN INDEPENDENT PLUG FOR APPLEVIS

Oh this is so cool! I just asked about a date several years in the past that I

it shouldn't be any surprise that siri can do this but i'd just never thought
to try it before! Thanks!

Cheryl

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

Sieghard

Re: I Pad mini

2015-01-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Correct. The big difference is that the iPad Mini doesn't have the phone
calling and texting feature you'll get on a phone. There are also some
minor differences where apps will take advantage of the larger display,
so some screen layouts may differ from the iPhone to the iPad. There are
also a few apps that you don't get on the iPad, but they're easy enough
to replace from the App Store. voiceOver does work the same, so you get
the same accessibility.

Deidre,

People have two iPhones or two phones with the same carrier when they
have a work phone and a home phone, so I actually do not think that is
an issue.

So, I gather from what you said about the 4S, you are basically using it
as a wifi device only and not using it as a phone.

If that is the case, one thought would be to activate it as a phone and
replace whatever you are currently using as a phone with it and instead
of buying another phone, perhaps buy an iPad Mini, either the newest
mini 2, or the previous mini with retina display.

Use the phone for phone things, and use the mini for books, music etc.
You will have double the battery life at least with a mini.

Or, like you say, chuck both current phones, and get a new iPhone with
enough memory for what you want to do and go with a lower cost plan
through someone like t-mobile, Consumer Cellular, etc., where you would
not be tied into a contract.

There are tons of options. The first thing I would do is sort out
exactly what you want to be able to do. Then, do you want one device or
two to maintain, then talk with the different carriers and see what you
can afford.

Good luck,

Richard

Simply ask SIRI, was: AN INDEPENDENT PLUG FOR APPLEVIS

2015-01-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: phone locking up when charging?

2015-01-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Hank,

I
D try the usual, force quit all apps, then turn off your phone, wait 30 seconds
and then plug it in. If it's a phone with Lightning connector plugging it in
will also turn it on and it should start up shortly. See how it does after the
reboot.
Also, you might want to check to see if the touch screen is clean. Sometimes if
it's very dirty it could result in unpredictable reactions.

Re: retina display, what is it

2015-01-01 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I have iPhone, iPad and Mac. And an old machine that is running linux. No
Windows at present but have had that too. I like everything I have, but I
understand the issue of not accumulating possessions. If that's your priority,
maybe you should just get a newer phone with more storage. If I had to only
have two things, it would be my iPad that I would eliminate though I wouldn't
want to get rid of it. If I really could do everything I needed to do without a
computer and wanted to get down to one item, I'd keep my phone. It isn't that
there aren't some nice things about an iPad vs a phone but if I really was
going to choose only one, it would be the phone. Now, if an iPad were also a
phone device, it might be a harder decision to make.

Re: I Pad mini

2015-01-01 Thread Richard Turner
Just make sure you spend your time checking out the pros and cons of having the
larger screen, and a second device to keep track of.
I'd also make sure to get one with the 64 bit processor if you do go that
route.
Get other people's input too.
Best of luck,

 Deidre,
People have two iPhones or two phones with the same carrier when they have a
work phone and a home phone, so I actually do not think that is an issue.
 Good luck,
 Richard

Requesting Suggestions On Scanning A Large Paperback Book WithThe KNFB Reader

2015-01-01 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello All,

I have just purchased a 300 plus paperback cookbook, with the page size
approximately 8 X 11.5. I am using an iPhone6 with iOS 8.1 with the KNFB
Reader. I'm wondering if others have scanned a book of this size and what they
used to hold down the pages that does not have a large amount of pages to
weight down the side. I tried a stmall weighted object, but that's not to
really doing the trick. Any other suggestions. Has anyone tried the KNFB Reader
with any of the stands or mounts? I would love to hear their experiences. I
will set up the StandScan Pro after posting this and see how this may assist me
in accomplishing this activity.

Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

Best,
Eileen

Requesting conversions with Siri (pounds to kilos, ounces to grams or
milliliters, miles to kilometers, etc.) , can also be hit or miss depending on
how you ask. Siri’s useful enough, but calling it a personal assistant is a bit
optomistic.

I could ask “How many days are between January 12 and February 28”. SIRI will
provide the answer which is 47 days. Wording is sometimes a bit tricky because

understand the question.

It seems with some things SIRI is becoming more finicky when it comes to how
you ask even though when Apple released SIRI they made a big deal out of how
you can just talk to SIRI in normal language. I also used to be able to ask
SIRI how long it was until popular holidays, but when I just asked “How long
until Easter”, SIRI answered “3 months”. This is sort of correct, but Easter is
on Sunday, April 5 which is 94 days from today and when I asked SIRI “How long
until Pentacost” the anser came back as “4 months” which is even less correct
since SIRI told me correctly that Pentacost was on May 24 which is 1 week shy
of 5 months.

SIRI also correctly can answer when my birthday is and that of my wife, but
when I ask “How many days is it until my wife’s birthday”, it wants to do a web
search for that. Definitely a bit inconsistent. It’s funny, but when SIRI first

Another very easy way to find out what weekday a particular date is to simply

weekend or not.

I have listened to a number of podcasts now and just today picked up an app

Thanks so much for this little gem. I hope others find it useful also. I

I think she did mention that is a 300+ a4 size cook book.
If, KNFB is the only option, you might want to make sure that is fair distance
beetween the book and the camera/phone, to make sure that the phone camera can
ditact the whole page. Scanstand or Scanbox might pretty much help, but, if it
is a big thick book, you migh need other solution like putting it on top of
some stand that you improvise yourself, like a box or something. Usually, allow
your phone to have about 15/20CM or about 6 distance on top of the book and
make sure you have plenty of light coming through the pages. try scan it page
by page, instead of two side page at the same time.

As far as justures are concern, try only have the require fingers on the

Also, the harder you bang on the phone with your fingers, the harder for the

At least, as far as I know, which is why I say check with others and do your

In my opinion, there isn't much point in buying a new device with the slower

RE: Ultimate Guitar iOS app accessibility

2015-01-01 Thread Cristóbal
Thanks for the suggestion.

I should have been more clear. What I’m looking for is an app for tabs. I’ll
give this one a look, but it sounds like it’s for creating guitar sounds?

I’ve always played by ear and thought I’d try my hand at learning to read tabs
to learn songs and riffs faster. I downloaded Ultimate Guitar and while it
indeed seems accessible enough (maybe issues got fixed), the way Jaws on the PC
and VoiceOver in this app read tabs sounds like a bunch of gibberish.

Don’t know if it’s an iOS oriented inquiry, but if someone does know of a
better way to read tabs on this app with Vo or some other app or method to do
the same, it would be appreciated.

I like the Guitarism app. It has nice sounds, and if you enable tilting, you
can have 18 chords available. I haven't used it extensively recently, but the
developer did work on accessibility last spring, and most of it is accessible.

That or if an alternative app could be recommended?

Results From The KNFB Reader Using The StandScan Pro

2015-01-01 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello List,

I thought others would find this of some interest. I have set up my StandScan
Pro without using the lights that are installed within the StandScan Pro. On
the KNFB Reader, I made sure that the camera light is toggled on. Scans that I
am receiving with the 2 devices are extremely accurate. I am not sure if this
is a bug, but I would need to go back into my emails to see if by adding pages
manually that the KNFB Reader will not process more pages until I toggle on/off
the batch mode. This is needed to be done after tapping on the add page button,
tapping on the back button to go to the main interface to take the picture. I
did try the batch mode and scanned 4 pages as a test. When I tapped on the
Multiprocess button, VO announced processing 1 out of 4. When the OCR
processing stopped, the KNFB Reader began to read the first page processed. I
just thought I would share this with others. The book I'm scanning is over 300
pages, so I'm not sure if I will proceed using the KNFB Reader or one of my PC
OCR text to speech soffware. HTH.

Best,
Eileen

I think I know what you mean about Siri being finicky with dates. I just tried
asking her when the 2016 summer Olympics start and she wanted to do a web

 Hi Carol,

Another very easy way to find out what weekday a particular date is to simply
ask SIRI. I use this a lot for my business when I have to pay invoices and
maybe I have an invoice which is due on April 7 and I want to know if this is
a weekend or not. So, I simply invoke SIRI and ask “What day is April 7”. I
just did this as I am typing the message and SIRI replied “It’s Tuesday,
 April 7, 2015”.

If you are asking about a date which is in the future, but in the same year,
you don’t have to include the year when you ask. E.g. as it is January 1
today, I can ask anything up to December 31, 2015 simply by asking “What date
is July 3” or what date is October 25” without including “2015”. If I want to
know what day Christmas 1988 was, I would then have to include the year and
ask “What day was December 25, 1988” and the same applies if the date is
 beyond 2015.

 Sieghard

 Hi all,

I just want to tell everyone, in case we have newcomers, how very helpful I'm
finding both this list and also, for more clarification so often, the
resources of AppleVis with so many helpful useful and informative podcasts.

Of course, you can easily access these files on your
computer and rename them as desired.

facebook messenger, and I'm trying to get it where voiceover will not read
the banner notification and broadcast my messages to whomever's in earshot. I
went to settings, and notifications, clicked on messenger, and tried setting
it to no alerts displayed, sounds were left on, and badges I tried both off
and on. I noticed that whenever banners were off, and no alert was selected,
but sounds were on, the dinging sound messenger makes would not sound when
the screen was unlocked. I did the same with my text messages, and it works
just fine. The text alert sounds, but the alert style is set to none, and
it's just perfect. But no matter what, I can't get the messenger alert to
sound alerting me to a new fb message. Whenever I open messenger, ever since
I turned alerts off, it will always display a message that tries to force me
to change notifications, which is annoying. Anyway, can someone tell me how
to get messenger to sound the alert, but voiceover to stop reading the banner
displaying my message so it won't be heard?
 Thanks a lot
 Kerri

Re: retina display, what is it

2015-01-01 Thread Joanne Chua
I think, what we need to consider also the processor of such device.
Yes, you can get an ipad2, or ipad mini 1st gen, but you are
compromising the processor speed. Of course, some would argue that if
the main concern you have for an ipad is to browsing the net,
streaming video and perhaps read a book or two, might not matter. But,
the reality is this, in the long run, it matters as most apps will
going to need more processor and power to run, not to mention the
ability to run the latest OS smoothly.

living room while my iPhone may float around a bit more. I tend to
segregate what I do on each device somewhat, e.g. I generally use my
Nexis 7 for media, playing music, watching Netflix and so on. One of the
reasons I got the Nexis 7 instead of an iPad was to play with Android
and the fact that you can get them much cheaper than you can get an iPad.

I do understand the single device desire though. Around the house, I'll
use my Booksense, my Android tablet and my laptop, but when I leave for
the day or on a trip then I just take my iPhone. Whether you want to
consolidate everything into one device or use multiple devices is a
personal decision and there are no right or wrong answers here.

Accept you won't find a device with the 64 bit processor that doesn't
 have the retina display.

At least, as far as I know, which is why I say check with others and do
your own research into the features you want.

In my opinion, there isn't much point in buying a new device with the
slower processor as things are going in the direction of putting more
and more demands on the processor capability of these devices.

Re: Threads: this is in response to the thread hijacking discussion of Bookshare to bria softphone

2015-01-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think this has anything to do with POP or Outlook. You can read
threaded messages in POP just like you can in IMAP. Also, clients have
been supporting conversations or threads for quite a while, such as
Thunderbird, Lotus Notes or Outlook. It is true that if you don't use a
threaded client, you don't realize how your message could go unnoticed
when you hijack a thread but that's why you shouldn't assume everyone
else reads email the same way you do and you should listen to the
moderators and others on the list when they point out things like
hijacking threads and not changing subject lines.

On 01/01/2015 02:59 PM, Alan Lemly wrote:

My own confusion with understanding thread hijacking came from using
Outlook on my computer for years for email. When you review emails
individually in POP format using Outlook, it is not clear when you reply
to a message and change the subject that you've run afoul of list
etiquette. The new message you created will be treated as such on your
computer with Outlook when it's downloaded via POP. However, as many
more of us are now checking our email using our iDevices in an IMAP
environment, the hidden metadata in the message continues to link it to
its source thread and when the subject is changed, the thread is
hijacked causing the resulting irritation for those checking mail with
their iDevices' mail app.

I think sometimes people don't understand that if you reply to
somebody's message, what you write is part of that thread. I know that
years ago when I started emailing I didn't understand this at all. If
you want to start a new topic and not hijack somebody's thread, it isn't
enough to just change the subject line. You need to start a new email
with your new subject rather than doing it as a reply to some other
message to that list. I remember early on in my Internet experience
having somebody really bawl me out for this and it was pure ignorance on
my part. You can argue whether I should have known better, should have
understood about threads on email lists, but I truly didn't. I did
finally figure it out one day on my own, but I don't remember ever
having it explained to me because it was assumed it should be obvious.

I hope this helps anybody who doesn't understand about threads. The
other thing that often happens is that the focus of a thread does indeed
change but people don't bother to change the subject line.

When you record something in DropVox, it automatically goes to a folder named
Apps\DropVoxwhere it can be accessed from the Dropbox app. The recording
will be named in the format DV--mm-dd.mp3 where the represents a

 Hi list,
First, happy New Year to all! Wish you the best!
I just had a quick question for anyone who may be able to help. I use
facebook messenger, and I'm trying to get it where voiceover will not read
the banner notification and broadcast my messages to whomever's in earshot.
I went to settings, and notifications, clicked on messenger, and tried
setting it to no alerts displayed, sounds were left on, and badges I tried
both off and on. I noticed that whenever banners were off, and no alert was
selected, but sounds were on, the dinging sound messenger makes would not
sound when the screen was unlocked. I did the same with my text messages,
and it works just fine. The text alert sounds, but the alert style is set to
none, and it's just perfect. But no matter what, I can't get the messenger
alert to sound alerting me to a new fb message. Whenever I open messenger,
ever since I turned alerts off, it will always display a message that tries
to force me to change notifications, which is annoying. Anyway, can someone
tell me how to get messenger to sound the alert, but voiceover to stop
reading the banner displaying my message so it won't be heard?
 Thanks a lot
 Kerri
