hi again Sieghard, As you mentioned in your post.
Would Kodi be accessible with voice over?, Billy

There is no official Kodi app you can simply download, if there were of course

Xcode, of course this is probably something a lot of people can't do because I
believe you definitely need a Mac for this so if you are a PC user as far as I
know this is not possible.
Apparently all of us with an old Apple TV 2 could jailbreak it and install Kodi
on it and hence have an accessible box with Kodi. Something I may look into.

HI Chris, I have found a company here in the UK, where the new apple 4 tv can
be purchased with Kodi already installed, or Kodi can be installed for you on
an existent apple tv. The apple tv with Kodi is costed at £185 and for an
existent apple tv £25 for Kodi to be installed, Billy

for me. So that makes me happy. This isn't an easy thing for me, because I
don't like change, or upgrades, or updates. Although, I am starting to like
more updates, as that usually makes things better. Even if you have to wait for
another update, to get some bugs fixed sometimes.

But what I don't really understand is, why they are offering these newer Apple
TVs with all this space. I mean, if you want everything to stream from your TV,
set of books, and games, and the like, then that makes sense. But I don't, as I
have said before. So I guess this must put me in the minority.

If I get a 32 gig model, I don't know what to put on it. I don't know how to
make it useful. I'm really confused here. Maybe I am overthinking it, but that
is just how I am, and who I am. That's not an easy thing to change about one's

Thank you for understanding, and reading this message. And again, thank you so

Well, I wouldn't do it. That's not that much cheaper than the new one. And if
money is a problem, you could get the 32 GB one new for cheaper, and probably
cheaper than that refurbished. You probably will not need the 64 GB model. Just
don't download screen savers that you can't look at. Apps are not large. We
have the 32 GB model, and we are nowhere near running out of space. Just my
opinion.

How do I turn off invitation emails in Calendar app? Need help, please!

2016-11-05 Thread Sherrie
How do I stop the native calendar app from sending "invitation" emails to
persons I happen to include in a calendar event? This is very bothersome. For
example I had an event I called "Dinner with Sue and George". It sent an email
to the email address I had for them and sent another to another Sue who doesn't
even live in my state! It has even cost me a friendship since I entered "Go to
court with Terry" when I was to testify in a civil suit and then I deleted it
later when it was cancelled. But somehow an email was sent to the person and
she thinks I put her business on the Internet. .
Well, I want to turn off this extremely annoying feature. I went to the Mail
app in settings and made sure that all my Google calendars were not connected.
I might have the calendar connected to Outlook through iCloud but don't know if
this would be a problem since I rarely open Outlook.
I want to stop all invitations, period. It is a breach of my privacy and
totally unnecessary.
I hope someone can help.

Re: Moore voice dream reader nonsense

2016-11-05 Thread ROBERT CARTER
Hi,

When Voice Dream Reader first introduced the iCloud syncing option, I had some
problems. I deleted everything in my Voice Dream library and re downloaded the
stuff I really wanted using iCloud sync. I have had no problems with the
feature since then. It was especially nice when I switched from the iPhone 6s
plus to the 7 plus. Voice Dream Reader automatically downloaded all of my books
from iCloud. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to start fresh when working
with cloud syncing.

I wasn't able to send the exact error message to Winston, because they
select text feature didn't work there, much to my great sorrow. So all I
could do was send him an approximation. I guess I just don't have a voice

Hi there,

It has differing things from what I can tell. I just got it to work, by
doing what was suggested.

But then when scrolling around the channels, it got to a channel, then
had an error. I don't know if I will keep the app or not. I don't think
it's interesting enough for me.

But it seems to have some different news offerings, different sports
offerings, movies, and possibly some cartoons. There may be more. But
this is what I found.

I hope this helps?

Hi there,

It has differing things from what I can tell. I just got it to work, by doing
what was suggested.

But then when scrolling around the channels, it got to a channel, then had an
error. I don't know if I will keep the app or not. I don't think it's
interesting enough for me.

But it seems to have some different news offerings, different sports offerings,
movies, and possibly some cartoons. There may be more. But this is what I found.

I hope this helps?

removing an App from Apple tv

2016-11-05 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I have tried to figure this out on my own. But couldn't for some reason.

The other day I put the NBC App on my Apple tv. But then I realized that
I needed to have a cable subscription to work. I should have known this.

Anyway, there is no point in me having this App there.

So how can I remove it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Hi Patti,

Yes, it is free.

It will give you an idea as to what channel you are at, once you are on
the channel. Sometimes it will even tell you what is playing.

Re: Moore voice dream reader nonsense

2016-11-05 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Robert, I did that once, started fresh after the big update messed stuff up.
And I was pleased when I switched from my 6S to 7+, because, like you, all of
my books just moved over nice and smoothly. But with this most recent update,
it would appear that everything that I had from book share that was downloaded
prior to the most recent update is now unusable, despite the fact that the
books look OK when you look in the book list. I got a sort of response
yesterday from the voice dream reader folks, apparently from whoever Winston
has looking at the inbox, thanking me for my message, saying they were sorry I
was having problems and that my concern would be forwarded to the developer.
All very nice, but not exactly the sort of response we had been used to getting
in the past. I know there's a much bigger audience for this app now. I am going
to look into alternatives. It's just not stable enough. This was a minor
update. To have almost my entire library trashed for a second time is just not
OK.

Thanks, Terri. I couldn't get my apple tv running the other night,
maybe it was due to our power glitch, hopefully it's okay now.

RE: purpose of apple tv

2016-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Christopher,

"Can't be" is an impossible statement. I can tell you with 100% certainty that
Apple is indeed working on a new Apple TV and they probably were working on it
before the 4th Generation Apple TV was even released just as they have teams
which are probably already working on the 2018 iPhone. In large corporations
like that where so much is at stake it is not like they say "OK, now the iPhone
7 and 7 Plus are released, let's all take a few weeks off and then we'll start
brain storming what we should do next year".
However, whether a new Apple TV will be released next year or in 2018 is
anybody's guess and just because the rumourmill in cyberspace hasn't started
cranking out guesses as to what it will be doesn't mean there won't be one.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the current model is
capable of 4K streaming and just as certain as I know they are working on a new
version I can tell you that said new version will support 4K, a lot of people
were disappointed that the 4th Gen didn't since the iPhones which were released
at the same time (the 6S and 6S Plus) can record video in 4K. I think this was
very much a marketing decision by Apple, the current version could have easily
been capable of streaming 4K content, but Apple probably thought after not
having released a new Apple TV for so long and with the new app store, the new
TVOS and SIRI they could get away with it and benefit from a few million people
who have bought the 4th Generation Apple TV also buying the 5th Generation when
it comes out with 4K support.
I know you are quite an Apple fan boy and I am somewhat guilty of that myself
at least when it comes to iPhones, the Apple TV and, recently, my new Apple
Watch series 2, but I still look at the larger picture and that picture tells
me that Apple is no different when it comes to making profits, they are just as
greedy as everybody else and have no scruples to squeeze the consumer for as
many Dollars, Pounds, Euros or whatever other currency as possible while at the
same time trying to avoid paying taxes as much as possible. In fact I would go
as far as to say that some other companies and current or former CEO's such as
Bill Gates are a lot more philanthropic as Steve Jobbs ever was.

Regards,
Sieghard

Can't be. I've not seen anything to support Apple working on a new Apple TV. I
do use blogs like IDB, but totally rely on Apple's words in order to believe
it. Until then, I believe it when i see it.

Just ddouble tap anywhere, the language doesn't matter, it simply displays
the Hello message in a number of languages which cycle around, this has
nothing to do with the language your iPhone uses. If you doble tap on the

RE: Withings Thermo body thermometer - another great Apple Store experience

2016-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The thermometer can't automatically associate readings with users, this has to
be done manually on the thermometer, but it also can be done in the app and is
accessible. The problem with body temperature is that there can be no auto
recognition, every human being has more or less the same body temp ande of
course there are natural fluctuations during the day and when you are sick.

Subject: Re: Withings Thermo body thermometer - another great Apple Store
experience

I just bought the scale and it seems to work well. However, I would caution
that the app is not as accessible as some might like. True, the measurements
can be shared with Apple Health and the app can be used with some labeling and
experimentation. It's not a deal breaker for me since I can access the
information I need. I am probably going to buy the thermometer as well now that
I've had success with the scale.

The only thing that concerns me about the thermometer is how it works with
multiple users. The scale does a good job of associating measurements with the
proper user since my weight differs significantly from the other member of my
household. How does the thermometer handle this? I can probably get that
information from the site but it's really my only concern at this point.

Hi Listers,

I just wanted to briefly post about a new gadget I purchased from the Apple
Store while I was here in Calgary. The item is the Withings Thermo Smart
Thermometer meant to measure body temperature. It is rather on the expensive
side at $109 Canadian (it is $99 US on the Withings website and from what I saw
it’s the same on Amazon). Of course this actually means we are getting a good
deal here in Canada since $99 US at the current exchange rate is about $135
Canadian.
Anyhow, it does seem to be a very nice device, the app is mostly accessible
although a few times during the setup I had to find a “Next” button by touch
since I couldn’t swipe to it and it can be integrated with the Health app so
that your body temperature measurements appear there. I was hoping I could also
take a look at another thermometer from “Kinsa”, it is an in-ear thermometer
which is only $69 Canadian, but they didn’t have it in stock and I like the
fact that with the Withings you just swipe it across your forehead and you can
be about half an inch away from the skin not even touching and it still works.
The girl who helped me at first showed me the box, I asked if there were any
way for me to actually feel it and she had no problem opening the box. I then
mentioned that given the relatively high price there was still the risk that
the app may not be accessible and she promptly said why don’t we pair it with
your phone and try it out. You can pair this via Bluetooth or WiFi and since I
didn’t want to try to do this over the open Apple wireless network at the store
we did bluetooth. At first we had a heck of a time to get it to work. She then
went in the back and said she wanted to talk to one fo their guys who might
know a lot more about it. They came back 5 minutes later and he told me he
owned the product himself and then showed me how to use it successfully. The
thermometer does have a display and you can assign measurements to different
family members, but you can also do this in the app and it all is quite
accessible. We wre also able to enable this in the Health app, but in order to
do so we had to use the search feature in the Health app and search for “body
temperature” and add this to the favourites screen so it’s there and easy to
find.
The results definitely seem to be accurate and you can of course set the Thermo
to display in Celsius or Fahrenheit and it’s pretty cool how fast it does this.
You basically start about in the middle of your forehead and swipe either to
the left or right to about your tempel, do it nice and slow and by the time you
get there the Thermo vibrates which means the measurement was taken.
All in all the experience at the Apple Store was fantastic, the service
outstanding and I ended up buying two of them since the manager of my retail
store and his girl-friend just had a baby and I thought this would make a good
present. They received tons of clothing from friends and babies do after all
get sick and it’s a good thing to have a good thermometer to check their
temperature. Of course if any of you guys are out on a date you can always
bring it and swipe it across your dates forehead to see how “hot” she is *bad
joke*.
Finally, below is a link for the product on the Withings website:
http://www.withings.com/us/en/products/thermo
If anybody owns one of the Kinsa in-ear thermometers maybe they can post their
experience and feedback since it is a less expensive option.

Even if you have to wait for another update, to get some bugs fixed

But what I don't really understand is, why they are offering these newer
Apple TVs with all this space. I mean, if you want everything to stream

sense. But I don't, as I have said before. So I guess this must put me in
 the minority.

If I get a 32 gig model, I don't know what to put on it. I don't know how

Well, I wouldn't do it. That's not that much cheaper than the new one. And
if money is a problem, you could get the 32 GB one new for cheaper, and
probably cheaper than that refurbished. You probably will not need the 64

RE: removing an App from Apple tv

2016-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Push and hold for a moment on the track pad, this is equivalent to a double tap
and hold on the iphone.
I believe Voiceover announces something about pressing the Play/Pause button
for options, that is the bottom button of the 3 buttons on the left side.
Once you press Play/Pause you are asked if you want to delete the app, press
the track pad again and it will be deleted.
I'm not in front of my Apple TV right now, but that is more or less how it
works.

Hello everyone,

I have tried to figure this out on my own. But couldn't for some reason.

The other day I put the NBC App on my Apple tv. But then I realized that I
needed to have a cable subscription to work. I should have known this.

Anyway, there is no point in me having this App there.

So how can I remove it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Apparently all of us with an old Apple TV 2 could jailbreak it and install Kodi
on it and hence have an accessible box with Kodi. Something I may look into.

HI Chris, I have found a company here in the UK, where the new apple 4

installed for you on an existent apple tv. The apple tv with Kodi is
costed at £185 and for an existent apple tv £25 for Kodi to be

Well, I wouldn't do it. That's not that much cheaper than the new one. And if
money is a problem, you could get the 32 GB one new for cheaper, and probably
cheaper than that refurbished. You probably will not need the 64 GB model. Just
don't download screen savers that you can't look at. Apps are not large. We

Hi Anouk,

When I updated to the latest version of Voice Dream Reader, I had a problem
with my Braille display repeating lines once it sniffed pages. I had to go into
visual settings, set the lines visible option to all, then close that. Now
close VDR and open it again. It worked perfectly now. Maybe that would help?
Not sure as I use a Focus 40 and a Braille Sens u2.

When adding a contact, question regarding label choices

2016-11-05 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

I have a question regarding when adding contacts, and using a label for that
contact. Such as, mobile.
I don't understand why some of these options are in here has choices. I know
maybe it's not really a big deal. But is something that bothers me.
Wire for instants do we have a choice of radio?
I have course can understand choices like home, and mobile. But I don't really
get home fax as an option, because it's not as though you can send a fax from
your phone. Or maybe you can now days, and I just don't know that. I also don't
get the car option, because nobody I know has had a car phone for years!
There might be some other options that are puzzling to me. But these are the
ones I can think of at the moment.

What the thing I really don't like, is this. Why don't they have the option for
iPhone as a choice, anymore?
They took that option away a couple of versions back. Then they returned it, I
think when we got version 10. But I don't remember exactly. Now it is gone
again. I don't like this at all!

I like my contacts to be organized properly. I'm very picky about this, and I
know it!
But if somebody has an iPhone, I want their number listed as an iPhone. If they
have an android, that's fine if it is mobile.

But I do not like listing someone who I know has an iPhone, with the mobile
label. I know this sounds silly. But this is just my choice, and the way I want
to be able to do things.

Does anyone know when this option might return? Or if it will return at all?
Thank you,

Terri

Well, asking why won't get you very far since there is no answer to "why" that
can be trusted unless it comes from Apple.
Also, to me, those labels are some irrational hold over from a time long, long
ago.
I've seen the iPhone option at times, but at other times it isn't there.
Sometimes the default is Home Fax, which I agree is silly; then other times the
default is home.
Then again, sometimes there is a custom option where you can write your own
label.
Personally, I think some Apple engineers are just too lazy to fix the labels
from whatever ancient template they are using.
I hope to be a part of a conversation with a senior Apple engineer in a couple
of weeks. I'll see if I can get an answer from him.
Just be assured that you are not the only one scratching their head over these
strange labels in contacts.

Apple brings AirPod-style streaming, Live Listen accessibility to MFi hearing aids

2016-11-05 Thread Mary Otten
Since I myself do not use a hearing aid, I am not in a good position to know
how useful this would be. But it sounds good. And I know we do have some folks
on these lists who are both visually and hearing impaired. So, in the hope that
this could be of use, here you are.
Mary
Apple brings AirPod-style streaming, Live Listen accessibility to MFi hearing
aids
AppleInsider

Apple has enhanced its iOS accessibility features for users with hearing
impairments, adapting its enhanced Bluetooth-based streaming to Made For iPhone
hearing aids while introducing Live Listen, a feature that uses an iPhone's mic
to focus on conversations in loud environments.

Apple first introduced MFi support for Bluetooth hearing aids in iOS 7 and
iPhone 4s. Its latest software expands support for direct streaming of phone
calls, FaceTime conversations, movies and other audio to supported hearing
aids, without the need for a middleman device known as a "streamer."

Apple has worked with a series of hearing aid manufacturers to enable advanced
Bluetooth streaming support, as detailed in a support page.

New iOS 10 hearing aid features integrate device battery life and independent
base, treble, right and left volume controls, and supports audiologist-designed
presets for handling sound from concerts or restaurants. Using geolocation,
devices can even automatically recognize when the user walks into, say, a
Starbucks, and their hearing aids can adjust automatically. It also supports a
"find my hearing aid" feature.

This enhanced, built in support for hearing aids borrows technology developed
for AirPods, the company's new wireless headphones leveraging Apple's
proprietary new W1 chip for effortless, flexible device pairing.

Apple's integrated bundling of an audio streamer for users with hearing
impairments is similar to its previous introduction of Voice Over, the screen
reader technology introduced for iPods, the iOS devices and Macs.

By building such accessibility features into the OS level for free, third party
developers can take full advantage of Apple's screen reading and streaming
technologies because they know they will be available on every device.
Previously, users with disabilities had to buy a bolted on solution that
required specialized support from app developers.

In addition to supporting audio originating on the phone, the new Live Listen
feature (above) also allows users to relay focused audio picked up by the
iPhone's mic, enabling clearer conversations when in a loud environment.

In a report for CNET, Shara Tibken detailed how individuals are taking
advantage of Apple's latest accessibility technologies to remain productive and
erase barriers.

Tibken noted that Google doesn't offer similar streaming support built into
Android. The company is stymied to deploy Apple's level of tight integration
across Android devices because it has no control over the hardware features its
partners chose to support in their own phones making use of some version of
Android software.

My SIRI rant, was: When adding a contact, question regarding label choices

2016-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard and Terri,

I actually think the labels you say depend on your email service. The "iPhone"
label I think might be there if you use iCloud but not for contacts stored on
Outlook.com and the same goes for the "Custom" option.

Terri, as far as labels like Home Fax or Pager are concerned, I guess that is
the same as "iPhone". Yes, you may not be able to send a fax directly from the
phone, but as a business owner I appreciate the fact I can store my contact's
fax numbers as part of the information I have and label them properly. As for
the iPhone label, it is in my opinion silly. An iPhone is a mobile phone and
after all, you don't have an "Android", "Blackberry" or "Windows Phone" label,
either. In any case, I may not necessarily know if some person in my contacts
has an iPhone or not and there is no purpose to that label in terms of iMessage
or Facetime since if somebody does have an iPhone and they have enabled these
features then when you send a text message it automatically goes as an iMessage
whether the number is labelled as "Mobile" or "iPhone".

One thing I don't get is the following example:

Assumptions:
You have a contact called "Allison"
You have a hone number and a mobiel number correctly entered and designated as
"Home" and "Mobile" for Allison.
You use SIRI to send a message, for example, "Hey, are you coming for dinner
tonight".
Here now the issue:
I tell SIRI "Text Allison Hey, are you coming for dinner tonight?"
SIRI then comes back at times and asks if it should use Home or Mobile to send
the message. I had this happen even if I opened the contact and tapped on
"Message" and it asked me to select/tap on one of the available numbers.
It used to be that if you selected to send a message or asked SIRI to do so
that automatically the mobile number was used. This of course makes sense, but
it doesn't always seem to be like that any more.

I continue to be astonished by how stupid SIRI sometimes is after having been
around for 5 years.
I still can't create a contact where I just put the name of a business in the
"Company Name" field and then ask SIRI to call that business.
SIRI will apparently not at all search/look in the company name field and
instead it will try to look up the business online. If I put the business name
also in the last name field all is well, but it's absolutely retarded.
Also, if I ask SIRI to look for something, for example, a restaurant, and SIRI
then starts listing options, when it comes to one I want and I say "Yes" when
it asks if I want that one, I usually get "I can call this location or give you
directions, which do you want". If you say "Directions" all is well, but if you
say "Call" SIRI goes into retard mode and asks "Whom should I call for you". It
is absolutely infuriating.
Lastly, I recently often have to turn SIRI off and back on because it can't
make phone calls to certain contacts, sometimes even those I have in my
Favourites list. Right now, for example, if I ask SIRI to "Call my Mom" it asks
me which phone number for Margrit Weitzel I want to use. This means aparently
SIRI knows that my Mom is Margrit Weitzel and if I ask SIRI to "Show me my
Mom's home number" it will do so happily. However, after it asks me which
number to use and I say "Home" or "Mobile" I get "Sorry, I can't find Margrit
Weitzel in your contacts". This borders on the unacceptable and I wish Apple
would get their act together and fix SIRI so it's a bit more useful, flexible
and consistent.

Regards,
Sieghard

Don't think so, but you may be able to set restrictions and prevent some of the
problems.
Keep in mind that if you go to Settings > General > Restrictions you will b

you can't get back in there if you want to disable said restrictions.

RE: My SIRI rant, was: When adding a contact, question regarding label choices

2016-11-05 Thread Richard Turner
I agree with much of your Siri rant, but the Home number or Mobile number is
not that out of line. I know lots of people who no longer have a Home number,
I.E. landline, just a cell phone. So, their home number is now their cell
number.
Splitting hairs I know, but I’ve run into the rest of your Siri issues and find
them just as perplexing.

Subject: My SIRI rant, was: When adding a contact, question regarding label
choices

Sieghard

Also, be aware that if you use some of the esoteric labels available via the
iPhone or Mac and sync with iCloud, things may work fine. However, in the past
I have had problems with those labeled fields not transferring if contacts are
synced with another service. I remember issues with the "Main" field for phone
numbers. It has been a while since I had these issues because I have been
exclusively using iCloud for the past few years. But I am about to stop doing
that and can only imagine the difficulty I may have.

Watch Cover To Lock

2016-11-05 Thread Shaf Patel
Is there a way of disabling that cover to lock feature on the Watch? It
seems to get triggered by almost anything that passes over the watch
screen, and this is extremely inconvenient for situations such as
recording when locking the screen will stop a recording (huge fail, Apple).

How to reboot and iPhone 7 without turning the volume down

2016-11-05 Thread Alan Lemly
With the elimination of a real home button on the iPhone 7, my understanding
is that to reboot the iPhone, one holds down the power and volume down
buttons simultaneously. I just tried this on my new iPhone 7 while it was
powered on but locked and it did reboot the phone but for several minutes, I
thought I had lost Voiceover when in fact what had happened is that I turned
my volume all the way down while rebooting. If someone knows of a procedure
in order to avoid doing this I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, this seems to
be a bad design flaw for those of us who depend on audio in order to use our
phones and who reboot their devices every so often as I do.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

iPhone 7 Setup and Restore Experience

2016-11-05 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I got my new iPhone 7 today and decided to document the steps followed in
setting it up and restoring an encrypted iTunes backup. I want to thank
Jonathan Mosen for his excellent Blindside podcast on unboxing his iPhone 7
Plus which I listened to again yesterday in anticipation of getting my new
phone. I thought a written list might be helpful to some although it is a
bit long. The list follows my signature.

I was pleased that all my apps downloaded from my computer to the new phone
after running a sync in iTunes. Even apps such as Fleksy VO which are no
longer available in the Apps Store downloaded with no problems and quickly.
My biggest adjustment to the iPhone 7 is going to be the haptic home button.
It really feels more like the phone is shifting in the case when this button
is pressed instead of like a button being engaged. I'm sure I'll get used to
it after a while.

Alan Lemly

Here are the steps I followed to set up my new iPhone 7 purchased online
from Apple and restore my encrypted iTunes backup of my iPhone 6:

1. Reviewed my most recent list of app updates to ensure all had been
downloaded to my computer using iTunes.

2. Connected my iPhone 6 to my Windows 7 computer and opened iTunes
version 12.5.1.21. This is one version back from the current iTunes 12.5.2
and should be current enough to successfully restore an encrypted backup to
a new iPhone 7.

3. From the iTunes menu, selected File, Devices, Transfer purchases
from iPhone to ensure all media purchased on my iPhone was properly
downloaded to my computer.

4. Synced and did an encrypted backup of my iPhone 6 within iTunes.

5. Opened my Keepass passwords manager to ensure my encrypted backup
password was listed and to copy it to my computer clipboard.

6. Opened the shipping box containing the iPhone 7. The box was
sealed along the bottom front edge and opened like a hinged trunk after the
tape was cut. The iPhone box was shrink wrapped to the floor layer of the
shipping box and this layer also pivots. Apple really puts a lot of thought
not only into its products but the containers in which they ship.

7. After using a pocket knife to cut the shrink wrap, removed the film
around the iPhone box. This film had a tab at the top edge of the box and
easily pulled off not unlike a protective film over the screen of certain
electronic devices. Only one sheet of paper was included in the shipping box
and it's a packing list according to my KNFB Reader scan. No instructions
were provided.

8. The top of the unwrapped iPhone box pulls up smoothly. Sitting on
the very top over the iPhone itself is a cardboard sleeve containing 3
items, a sheet the same size as the iPhone with miniscule print with
absolutely no contrast, a more durable sheet which appears to have a picture
of the iPhone shown partially on the front and back with little information
I could discern, and a clear film sheet the size of the phone with two Apple
stickers on it. I have no clue what these stickers are for other than to
stick on a notebook or such thing to advertise your Apple support.

9. The iPhone is next and lifts straight up. It has a protective film
around it with a tab that can be used to grasp and pull it up if need be.
With this tab toward the bottom of the box, below the iPhone in the bottom
cutout, is the lightning AC plug. In the top cutout is the wired lightning
earpods housed in a square cardboard package which lifts up using a
cardboard tab. On the underside of this cardboard housing is the lightning
to 3.5mm headphone adapter sort of crimped into the cardboard underside.
Just below the lightning earpods container is a circular bottommost area
holding the lightning USB cable.

10. Being the exceedingly cautious geek that I am, I put the iPhone 7 in a
Tech21 Evo Check case to offer protection while setting it up.

11. Powered on the iPhone and could make out the word hello presented on
the very bright screen. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and heard
Voiceover on. Home is no longer a real button and is driven by a haptic
engine. With the iPhone 7 default home button setting, it felt more like the
phone was shifting in its case than like a button being pressed. I'll change
the home button setting later.

12. The iPhone screen turned off while I was typing this but with the
default setting, it automatically awakens when lifted up. Voiceover
announces "press home to open".

13. Select your language was announced and English was listed first and I
double tapped while it had focus.

14. Select your country or region was announced and I double tapped on
United States which was first in the list.

15. Choose a Wi-Fi network heading was announced and I double tapped on
the appropriate one.

16. My wi-fi network is secured so I was prompted to enter the password.
Be aware that you will be in standard typing mode instead of touch typing
mode so you should use your

contributor Gordon Kelly reported exclusively last week. Apple declined to
reply to requests to acknowledge the bug until now. You can install iOS

Settings > General > Software Update. The iOS 10.1.1 update is available for
the following devices: iPhone 5 and later, iPad 4th generation and later and
iPod touch 6th generation and later.
What Is Included In The Update?
The software update is relatively small at under 70MB, which indicates that
it is a minor update with a few bug fixes. There weren’t any betas of iOS

There were many complaints about health data not being visible following the
iOS 10.1.1 update within the Apple Communities forum so it is a relief that
Apple turned around a fix in a short amount of time:

And Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly said that he was contacted by many
people directly “with stories of hours spent on the phone to Apple tech
support, all without resolution.” Many Twitter users also said that they
attempted to reboot and factory reset the devices, but the Health app data
did not reappear:

iOS 10.1 was somewhat of a major update. iOS 10.1 included a “Portrait”
mode, which helps make the most out of the dual cameras in the iPhone 7
Plus. The Portrait camera mode essentially utilized the wide-angle and
telephoto iPhone 7 lenses in a way to create portraits with depth effects.
This makes the subjects of the photos look sharp while also creating blurred
backgrounds, known as “bokeh” effects. iOS 10.1 also included Transit
directions for Apple Maps in Japan. And iOS 10.1 also added a “Reduce
Motion” setting for the Bubble and Screen effects in the Messages app.

Dave,

It is easy to say what was written below. You have to address any bugs to the
accessibility staff. You need to show them solid proof the bugs exist.

That is why I encouraged the folks on this list to send an email with any
issues.

Scott Davert,

I would rather not bother any products from Humanware, for the folks at
Humanware do not do much. I would not bother them but simply stay out.

A friend of mine has a Brailliant. The friend makes similar statements about
the device as you said.

Scott, I do have a Braille Sense Mini U2 which works good with any devices. I
am fine with the U2.

You should better off any contact or any product with Humanware.

Thanks,

Todd

Hi.
Yes, I've also noticed that the Brailliant display line has had various issues
with Bluetooth connectivity over the past few years.
The newer firmware seemed to be a bit better when using the HID mode, but I
haven't honestly used it enough to really say that it's better over a longer
period of time. I find the Resreshabraille and the HIMS products seem to hold
the connection better. The first and second generation of the Refreshabraille
don't seem to hold the connection over a distance of 3 or 4 meters, but the
newer generation, along with the Braille Edge and Braille Sense tend to hold
the connection pretty stable for about 10 meters.

Hi Scott,
I tried hid also but that does not seem to work on the iphone (by that I mean i
tried connecting the brailliant while its protocol was set to openbraille
instead of humanware and the channel to bluetooth).
I dont think the refreshbraille is sold here in the Netherlands but the himms
displays are being sold here nowedays. I did hear though that some himms
displays have a bug where braille input/typing is concerned?
Not that that would be a big issue for me but still… Greetings, Anouk,

RE: iMessage bug

2016-11-05 Thread Todd Patkus
Lynnette et al,

If one turns the VO off, how can a deafblind who is a strong Braille user know
what is going on while he does what you did? How can he know what the display
show?

I am sure Rich will tell y'all something.

Todd

Subject: iMessage bug

Hey all,

Since updating to iOS 10.1.1, the messaging apps feature in iMessage doesn't
work like it's supposed to. The only way to cycle between iMessage apps or
stickers is to turn VO off and swipe left with one finger. I have quite a few
sticker packs and apps that I use, so this is very tedious. Has anyone else
noticed this?

Lynette
