RE: Vibrating Alarm?

2017-01-17 Thread Cristóbal
I use a FitBit Flex for this specific purpose.
My sighted wife uses a wake up light which doesn't bother me and since I'm the
early bird whereas she hates mornings with the passion of one thousand burnings
suns, my Flex is perfect for our situation.

Another reason I use Fitbit is because no noise. It would have

Have any of you found a phone alarm that vibrates rather than
making noise that's speech friendly?

Thanks in advance.

group distribution in native email account

2017-01-17 Thread R Van Lant
With some regularity I need to forward information to a large group of people.
I added each of the contacts to my Outlook 2010 address book on my laptop and
then added them to a contact group. I can send emails to this group when on my
laptop. While the individuals show up in my contacts on my phone, the group I
created does not - or at least I'm not finding it. On vacation without my
laptop, I added all 30 people one by one to the message I needed to forward.
Please tell me there is an easier way? A google search on the topic gave me a
recommendation of some contacts app that would aide in this, but I'd rather
know if there is a way with my existing native contacts and email. Maybe
downloading the Outlook app is what I need to do?

You know how certain channels like, TNT, and USA, have audio description?

Well, can you receive this from the Directv Now App?

If so, how would I go about doing this?

I hope it's possible. I love this feature!

Subject: Need help synching Windows contacts with iPhone 5s

I used to be able to sync my Windows contacts with those on my
iPhone 5s but now cannot. I am current with iTunes and use
Window-Eyes. Here's what I'm doing:

I connect my iPhone to my laptop running Windows 7.
I Open iTunes and wait for it to fully load.
I open the File menu and select devices. I get options to sync by
iPhone, transfer purchases, etc.

I arrow and select the sync option.
I used to then tab through various options which included
information, contacts or something like that. Then I could initiate the sync.

Now, I am prvented from tabbing. Pressing Enter starts the sync.
But neither my iPhone contacts nor Windows contacts are updated with changes.
Any tips on how to get my contacts to sync?
Thanks,
Jeff

on it requires a pass code. However, I have re-done my fingerprints about 5
times. They only work for maybe 3 times to get an app or open the lock screen.
Then phone starts squawking about putting in my code or if an app I need to put

RE: Vibrating Alarm?

Another reason I use Fitbit is because no noise. It would have
to be turned up and my wife hates noise.

From: "Mr. Ed" I have the TCL Pulse which is a very small device. It is about
two inches in diameter and about 3/8 inch thick. I downloaded
the TCL Pulse app from the app store. Just pair it up and put it
under your pillow. I guess I put it inside my pillow case on the
bottom side. It works great on the vibration mode. I has three
vibrations modes. Also has sound modes but I don't use them as
they are not loud enough for me with my severe hearing loss. You
can buy the device from Amazon.

From: Richard Turner I was curious so I did a google search. I knew there were alarms
like this designed for people who are deaf.
I found one at a site that seems to have several, but this one
might be of interest as you can control it from an iPhone or
Android. Most of them would not be accessible to a person who is
blind, but this one sounds promising. I put the main web site
link after the link to the one that works with smart phones.

The smart phone one is called Smart-Shaker Green:

Re: Stop saying links voiceover!!!

2017-01-17 Thread Mary Otten
I have certainly reported the business about the columns and rows in mail
reading, both through the beta channel and directly to accessibility at Apple.
I have not said anything about voiceover reading links, but I have requested
greater verbosity flexibility for voiceover with regard to web elements, just
not specifically links. I hope everyone writes to accessibility at Apple to
wake them up that this is a big deal. If they would read with voiceover, they
would soon come to understand what a pain it is.Mary

RE: native email client questions

2017-01-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can still read emails separately, just flick down when you are on the main
message of a thread until you come to where it says "Expand", then double tap
and the thread expands and you can read each email, delete it and so on.
I am not beta testing right now but I am prety sure Apple is aware that the
2-finger flick up doesn't start reading the message body any more and from the
way it sounds they will bring this back.
I tried the Outlook app for a while and while it is also a nice app, I really
am used to use the scrub gesture to back out of messages and also out of a
particular mailbox back to my list of mailboxes and in Outlook you can't do
this, if I want to get out of my Outlook.com account, for example, so I can
open my work account I have to tap on the Close button at the top left. It's a
minor thing, but it's one of these little things which for me are annoying.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: native email client questions

Sieghard, I appreciate the native email app. However, is there a way when you
open the thread on the inbox page to have the whole email read? Also, if I go
into the mail itself is there a specific place to touch where you can read the
email before flicking up or down to read another email in the thread? It used
to be in native email app that when you entered email you could flick up with 2
fingers and the post would read from the beginning of just the post not the
heading. That is why I am reluctant to try another email client as I probably
would havd the same problems I have now that drive me crazy. Gosh it was nice
to swipe up and read each email separately! I am asking you because you use the
email and like it. However, anyone, of course, can give info and opinion. Thank
you so much. I hear a new update is coming Feb 10. Can this be confirmed and is
there going to be a fix for mail?

Subject: RE: Outlook app

Hello there,

The first question to answer is there a way to adjust the number of lines to
preview with in the Microsoft Outlook for iOS. The answer is no. What you hear
for the preview is what you get. Which is quite a bit and I think is longer
than what Apple Mail gives you. Of course you don't have to do the three
fingers tap to hear the preview this is automatically read to you as you swipe
to the mail on Microsoft Outlook which I love and miss in what Apple ripped
out. Personal preferences of course.

Second question is why would I use Microsoft Outlook over Apple Mail. I almost
have to say you haven't tried this yet I can see. ;)

Well perhaps you did. Again, this is a personal preference. What I love out
Microsoft Outlook for the iOS is that I have many emails and mail boxes. So if
you have the similar issue and hate having to jump in and out of all of your
mail boxes. Outlook offers an All Mail and which I totally love. All of my
emails in all of the mail boxes are displayed on oin one place. No more jumping
around all over the place. The second thing I like is the what is called the
Focus and Others. This is a very simple rule based options that Outlook gives
you to control in what you want to see that is important and not important. For
example, all of the mail that comes in that I do want to see now I have set up
to come in the Focus page. All others non-essential mail goes in to my Other
page. This separate from what I want and those I will deal with at another
time. You teach which mail that you want to go in to the Focus or Other page.
So these essential mail from work goes in to my Focus and the mailing list can
go in to the Other page if you want. The choice is yours. Lastly, under the
file section you can see all of the attachments that you have in all of your
mail boxes. At any time you can simply put them in to various cloud services
like iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, and etc. Yes, Apple Mail has this but what
it doesn't do is that you have a page that shows all of the mail with
attachments and easily can drop them in to cloud drive and vice versa on the
fly.

Overall, I find the experiences on the Outlook smoother and can handle many
mail boxes so much easier. Being able to see everything all in one place really
helps. There are a lot of little things that went in to this design and you
just won't find in the standard Apple Mail. So if you only have just one mail
or maybe two. Don't get a lot of mail. It is probably not for you. For those
with more mail boxes and have to deal with a lot of emails. I really would try
this out. Its free and you have nothing to lose. Which by the way just because
it is Microsoft Outlook isn't just for Outlook accounts or exchanges. It will
work with iCloud, gMail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, and many other services and
custom ones like what Apple Mail offers.

Regards,

Thomas

I’m glad those steps helped.

I too think it is a great and easy to use app.

Hi,
I will go through the steps to make sure we are talking about the same steps.
First, you created your group.
Next, you selected that group.
Next you double tapped on the Send text button.
Now you will be in your group and you hit the next button.
Now, you should be in the Compose Text screen.
Then, write your text.
Now, there is a done button in the upper right, double tap that.
Then, you double tapped on Next again.
Now, you should be in the standard text message screen with the send button
just above the o and p on the onscreen keyboard.
Double tap that send button and you are finished.

Does that help?

Subject: A2Z Question

I downloaded the A2Z app on Richard’s advice & it is very easy to use. My only
problem comes after I am finished dictating a text. I am having lots of
trouble finding the send button. After dictating the text I double finger
double tap to end dictation. Then I can’t find a send button. There is a next
button but that doesn’t seem to get me anywhere. It seems I have to select
more info then find it above the keyboard. I am used to using Ciri to send
texts so this is a bit frustrating. Is this what you all do or is there an
easier way to send when done dictating a text?

RE: Stop saying links voiceover!!!

2017-01-17 Thread Richard Turner
I do not believe there is a way to stop this.
That is what made some dictionary apps useless because about every word in a
definition was cross linked and so you couldn't get through a definition
without hearing dozens of "link."

You will want to contact Apple Accessibility, of course.

Nancy, as long as the fingerprint is active the reason why it's asking you for
the passcode, because it wants you to use the fingerprint or the passcode so

wish to start off an email list, like this one, but for VIPs in the Kitchen. We
are thinking to focus on techniques/devices/technology/apps and general shared
experience. Encouraging podcast type contributions as well. hoefully, it would
be international, but with English as the shared language, just for ease of
communication.

Now, I see, from Google, that it looks easy enough to set up a new
group, is Google the easiest one? Can people, who don't have gmail accounts
access such a group? Or, should I be looking at free lists?

In short (she always says that!) All advice very welcome, as, indeed,
are all or any of you who might want to join such a group As there are only
two of us right now!! I am foing marvelous things with my Thermomix machine,
others have slow cookers, one pot cookers and others perform perfectly well
manually, so, what is your thing? You might be a King/Queen on the kitchen, or
flustered by Marmite on toast! No matter, all will be most welcome!!

Fingerprint ID question

2017-01-17 Thread Nancy

Everyone,

I have an SE. I have my thumb print assigned to be my ID.

What do I have to do to let my Thumbprint be all that is necessary for
me to have full access to my SE. There is no problem in making or
receiving calls, but it seems the SE often asks for the 6 digit pass
code. How can I get the SE to stop asking me for my pass code no matter
what I want to do with it?

Thanks!

Nancy and her SE

Re: Starting up a new email list, need help!

2017-01-17 Thread MamaPeach
I got most of my subscribers for my recipe group by using a signature and just
word of mouth. Most lists don’t like other lists to be advertised on their
lists.

I hope I got the right!!

All tips and tricks would be most welcome. For example, do I have it right,
people don't have to subscribe, they just send a message to that address, in
this case, vipsinthekitc...@groups.io
and it will get their message on the list?

I see links for unsubscribing, but none for subscribing.

Do you have any ideas as to how to get the word out to the public? I am
thinking to put it in my signature, but who reads down to the signature? In
the meanwhile, if anyone is interested in giving it a go, it is a list for VIP

Re: native email client questions

2017-01-17 Thread Mary Otten
Somewhere, possibly on Apple Vis, I recall seeing something about an
acknowledgment from Apple that this two finger flick up thing was in fact not a
design change as had been postulated buy some folks in our community. So they
know what it is, and they know it is broken. Now let's hope they actually fix
it in a timely manner. It's interesting about the idea of putting your finger
in the same place on the screen every time to two finger flick down and read a
message. I find that this does not work all that well, possibly because of
different length headers? Sometimes it works, and sometimes you hear what you
think is going to be the start of the message, foot down, and somehow focus has
gone elsewhere and you here stuff you didn't want. I don't know if it's due to
a mailing list being used instead of an individual message or what. But I still
find myself frustrated at the inefficiency of the new method required to read
messages. That and the unnecessary repetition of row and column numbers in a
lot of messages. That is a tremendous time waster that they really need to fix,
and I don't think they get it, based on my correspondence with excess ability.
They seem to think that's what we want. Or at least of the person I was in
correspondence with didn't see a problem. I wish they would try reading
messages that say row X and Collin why every single line. But that's another
topic.

Mary

2017-01-17 Thread MamaPeach
If you need any help, just let me know and I can maybe help. There are a few
little tricks that you have to know when managing a list on groups.io, like if
you want or need to access certain parts of the site, you have to hold down the
control key when clicking on an item to get anything to happen.

  Hallo Lovely People!

A friend, from Australia, a fellow dogless guide dog owner, and myself
wish to start off an email list, like this one, but for VIPs in the Kitchen. We
are thinking to focus on techniques/devices/technology/apps and general shared

2017-01-17 Thread Richard Turner
Hello,
No invite came through.
If you send it from the io group address and that address is not subscribed to
this list, that would explain why it didn’t come through.
If you can find the subscribe Email address and send it to this group from your
current Email, that should work.
, I’m sure Mark and Cara won’t mind.
Since you are not selling anything or trying to compete, I can’t see any reason
you shouldn’t just send the info.

RE: A2Z Question

2017-01-17 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
I will go through the steps to make sure we are talking about the same steps.

2017-01-17 Thread regina alvarado

I have written but will do so again. I also told the gentleman on the phone in
accessibility of the problem, though that was not my question to him. However,
I wonder if they really understand what we are talking about. He acted like he
had no idea what I meant. I explained in steps too. Thus, wonder if they can
really fix it even if there are many voices wanting it. Remember, they look at
the whole page and can quickly scan the heading. I think it is now 2 or 3
updates with the problem. Thanks for the description of how to find the
beginning of a message, though. One thing I noticed they fixed was the first
post in conversation is now the one that is the original. It may be the seventh
message, but six through one answer it. Happy about that fix.

RE: native email client questions

2017-01-17 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
Please write to accessibil...@apple.com and add your voice to wanting the two
finger flick up back to read Emails.
But, if you touch around the middle of the screen with one finger, you are
going to be very close to the start of the message and can flick down with two
fingers at that point to read the rest of the message.
On my 5S, with any Email message, it is almost exactly the middle of the screen
where the message starts. I would say within an eighth of an inch anyway.

HTH,
Richard

RE: finger print and location or make it easy

2017-01-17 Thread Pablo Cesar Morales
Come on Sieghard

If someone breaks in your home, they aren’t going to take your phone, and sit
on the sofa to see your private information. People who breaks in other homes
gets inside take as much they can, and they run away, they are not going to sit
in your sofa, take their shoes off and start to check your phone while they
drinks some wine. As I said, as soon your phone leave your home, it gets block
right away. I think that block our phones because stealers are going to break
in our home and sit on the sofa just to check our phones is a little bit
paranoid.

Hi Pablo,

I agree that voice recognition could be something Apple could work on, but I
certainly wouldn’t want my phone to automatically be unlocked or unsecured just
because my phone is at home or I am using a bluetooth keyboard that is paired
with my phone. If somebody breaks into my house this means they have full
access to my phone and in my opinion this defeats the purpose of a passcode or
Touch Id.

Hmm,

No, it is not so easy. I mean, it is easy, but sometimes this action could be
annoying. For example, if I am playing Spotify, the screen gets lock, because I
don’t want to waste the battery so quick. If I lock the screen, and I want to
change the type of music that I am playing, I have to walk to my phone, and
unlock my phone, and research for a different type of music. This example is
when I have my iPhone connected to my sound system at home. Another example, if
I am on the bed , sleeping, and my phone is on the table being charged, if I
want to send a text message to my wife, I need to unlock my phone and send her
a text message. If I want to use my phone at home, and I just don’t want to
walk to my phone to unlock it, I would like to give a verbal command, and do
not need to walk to my phone to unlock it, then give a verbal command. Verbal
commands sometimes works for things like the weather, or time, or things like
that, but when the verbal command imply opening an app, it require unlocking
the screen. It is annoying.

I have a pixel phone, and it has the feature for smart lock. It allow me to
unlock my phone when I am at home without finger print. As soon I leave my
home, the phone gets lock automatically. Another great thing that I have found
in my pixel phone is that the phone could be unlocked when it recognize my
voice, or when it recognize a Bluetooth device. The smart lock in android allow
to unlock the phone without finger print for secure location, voice
recognition, or secure Bluetooth device. With the Bluetooth devices, as soon I
stop using my Bluetooth keyboard for 5 seconds, the phone gets locked again, if
I don’t talk to my phone after I unlock my phone through a verbal command, it
gets locked after 5 seconds. It is really great.

I think that apple should work with these features that of course if you are
working with your Bluetooth keyboard, why you need to unlock your phone through
a finger print? You want your phone unlocked as soon you start using the
keyboard. If you are at home, you are not running the risk that someone will
steal your personal information at home, well it depends of with who are you
leaving of course. The voice command is the same thing, if you say ok google,
and the phone recognize your voice, why you need to take your phone from the
table to unlock it with your finger print?

No, if a passcode/touch Id is set it needs to be used whether at home or not.

Having said this I rarely find it is inconvenient since it is so easy to unlock
with Touchg Id.

A2Z Question

2017-01-17 Thread Sherry Wells
I downloaded the A2Z app on Richard’s advice & it is very easy to use. My only
problem comes after I am finished dictating a text. I am having lots of
trouble finding the send button. After dictating the text I double finger
double tap to end dictation. Then I can’t find a send button. There is a next
button but that doesn’t seem to get me anywhere. It seems I have to select

Re: Starting up a new email list, need help!

Talking with moderators from different lists I am on and now having a list of
my own I think groups.io is the easiest for a totally blind person. A group of
about 115 members on one group I belong to left googlegroups because of the
difficulties with it. Go to groups.io and see if it does all you want.

2017-01-17 Thread Ann Smith
Sounds like a great list. I was born with retinitis pigmentosa. I have found
three bread machines, one ice cream maker, one snowcone maker and other
machines.
That was supposed to have said owned. I would love to get more information on
how a blind person uses the QVC rotisserie 12 core air fryer. I have the two
PDF documents, but that's not the same as talking to a blind person about it.
Just talk to Tatian to finger double tap when finished I have the adapted
instructions for the air fryer, but finding more recipes that are easy for a
blind person to use is kind of tricky. Great idea. Looking forward to joining
your list.

You do not have to have a Gmail address to join a Google list.
I have never started a list, so I do not know if Freelist is easier or not.
Good luck with the list, I'm sure you will find plenty of participants.

RE: finger print and location or make it easy

2017-01-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Pablo,

I agree that voice recognition could be something Apple could work on, but I
certainly wouldn’t want my phone to automatically be unlocked or unsecured just
because my phone is at home or I am using a bluetooth keyboard that is paired
with my phone. If somebody breaks into my house this means they have full
access to my phone and in my opinion this defeats the purpose of a passcode or
Touch Id.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hmm,
No, it is not so easy.

Hi all,
I love the finger print in the iPhone 5s and newer phones. But I am not sure if
we have the option to avoid the protection when we are at home, or when we talk
to the phone. Some times when I say “hey Siri”, open Spotify, my phone require
that I unlock the screen with the finger print or a password. But if I am at
home, there is no a way to make it easier?

Re: Starting up a new email list, need help!

2017-01-17 Thread Alan Lemly
I'd second Mama Peach and suggest groups. Io for a new list. I know Google
groups is easy to subscribe to via email but I'm not sure managing the list as
owner is totally accessible. I know there are accessibility issues with list
management under Yahoo groups.

Good luck.

RE: RE: Outlook app

2017-01-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can delete all messages in the Trash mailbox at once. I always wondered why
people would want to delete all messages in your main Inbox because my business
as well as my main personal email accounts always have some messages in the
Inbox as I am dealing with them and either delete them after reading/replying
or move them into other permanent folders and of course there are always new
ones coming in.
Only time I could see how I might want to delete all messages if I maybe
haven’t had time in a few days to go through the messages of Viphone and the
Jaws mailing list for which I am using a dedicated email address.

have in those mail boxes. So every email in the Inbox of Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook
and my Work account can be displayed in this All Mail Box option. In this All
Mail Box page. All of those inbox emails are here. No more having to go to each
mail boxes separately. It sounds messy but really it grew on me in able to see
everything in one place. Yes, Outlook does have the option to see those
separate mail boxes as you have in Apple Mail.

For me I have a personal mail account, a junk mail account, two AppleVis mail
account, and a work mail account. Putting this all together just makes my life
easier and faster. Just respond back to the email and it will send it by which
inbox it came from.

Good question! Sorry for the confusion. ;)

Thomas

Thomas, I lost you when you were talking about the advantage of Outlook because
you can see all your mail in one box. You can do that with apple mail. And you
have your boxes separate. I have an inbox where I see my Gmail, my Comcast
mail, and my iCloud mail all in one box. And I have my separate boxes, each
with its own folders if I want. So in that respect, I see no advantage to
Outlook. If I were to use Outlook, what I be able to have my separate boxes? If
not, that is a dealbreaker.

Lastly, under the
file section you can see all of the attachments that you have in all of your
mail boxes. At any time you can simply put them in t

In my opinion, groups.io is much easier. I have my recipe list and the subgroup

the interface, you just have to learn how to use it, which isn’t hard at all.

  Hallo Lovely People!

A friend, from Australia, a fellow dogless guide dog owner, and myself
wish to start off an email list, like this one, but for VIPs in the Kitchen. We
are thinking to focus on techniques/devices/technology/apps and general shared
experience. Encouraging podcast type contributions as well. hoefully, it would
be international, but with English as the shared language, just for ease of
communication.

Now, I see, from Google, that it looks easy enough to set up a new group,
is Google the easiest one? Can people, who don't have gmail accounts access
such a group? Or, should I be looking at free lists?

In short (she always says that!) All advice very welcome, as, indeed, are
all or any of you who might want to join such a group As there are only two

You do not have to have a Gmail address to join a Google list.
I have never started a list, so I do not know if Freelist is easier or not.
Good luck with the list, I'm sure you will find plenty of participants.

Lastly, under the file section you can see all of the attachments that you have
in all of your mail boxes. At any time you can simply put them in to various
cloud services like iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, and etc. Yes, Apple Mail has
