How can I preview driving directions to another city?

2017-02-18 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I'm doing some preliminary navigation work for my wife for a trip we're
planning by car tomorrow.

What's the best way to preview a route?

I've found the route in AppleMaps, but it will only show me how to get started,
and, presumably, feed me info as we go. But, it also offers several alternative
routes that take a little longer but might be preferred. I'm guessing Maps
shows the map, but is there any way within Maps, or by using another app, to be
able to preview a route?

Thanks in advance, Keith

Sounds disappeared!!

2017-02-18 Thread Harry Bell
I was using my iPhone 7 Plus today on iOS 10.2.1 and after a phone call with my
Bluetooth airpods in, suddenly all my sounds disappeared. Now there are no
keyboard clicks nor any alerts when text messages arrive. I've tried turning
the settings for keyboard sounds off and back on, rebooting phone, but still no
sounds. Music plays fine and phone rings when phone calls are received. Does
anybody know what the solution is? Thank you. Harry

RE: vibration not working on silent

2017-02-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I think Apple needs to do a bunch of work around this and decide on how to
handle various scenarios. I can confirm that when the mute switch is on and
somebody calls my phone does the one short vibration and Voiceover announces
the caller, but no vibration happens beyond this. Here is my further complaint:
if you allow a caller to bypass Do Not Disturb they also bypass mute, in other
words if you open a contact, go to the person's ringtone and turn on Emergency
Bypass then you hear all tones (text tones, ringtones etc.) if Mute is on but
Do Not Disturb is not on. The explanation of Emergency Bypass is this
"Emergency bypass allows sounds and vibrations from this person even if Do Not
Disturb is on". Of course I think this is great because you may want certain
people like close family membes to be able to reach you even at night or when
you are in a meeting, but at this point the way it works means that the mute
switch and Do Not Disturb basically do the same thing. I think that if I really
want no ringtones or other tones to come through then turning on mute should do
this and it should even mute those tones from people who have emergency bypass
turned on. Alternatively, Apple could add a second setting to let you decide
separately if tones should come through when mute is on, by default it should
be off, but maybe there is one or two people who should absolutely reach you no
matter whether Do Not Disturb or mute is on.
The other problem is that for those of us who have an Apple Watch the watch
obeys any setting you have for Do Not Disturb, if somebody calls you where
Emergency Bypass is not on for that person the call actually goes straight to
voice mail. I guess in a way this is different from Mute because if mute is on
and somebody calls the caller will hear the ringtone and only be passed on to
voice mail once the appropriate number of rings have passed. Anyhow, the
problem is that if you turn on mute on the phone and somebody calls the Apple
Watch still rings. It's like it doesn't know that you put your phone on mute
and I think since it's connected to the phone at all times via bluetooth the
phone should tell the Apple Watch "Hey, the mute switch was just turned on, so
you also go to mute". What good is it if you are in a meeting or at church and
you turn on mute, but then your Apple Watch rings anyways.
Also, it is important to note that this issue with no vibrations on mute is a
Voiceover bug. If you put your phone on mute, then turn off Voiceover with a
triple click of the home button and then lock your phone and call it the
vibrations come through just fine.
I will definitely submit this to accessibility @applecom and as usual the more
of us who do this the more likely it is Apple will take this seriously.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: How can I preview driving directions to another city?

2017-02-18 Thread Alan Lemly
Keith,

I got the full text list of driving directions in Apple Maps after searching
for a contact, double tapping on their address, and double tapping on the
directions button. The first screen presented shows a map but has buttons at
the bottom with miles and hours for the trip. If I double tap on one of those,
I get a screen with a list of the complete trip directions. I did note that
Apple Maps seemed to time out of this list and return to the map for some
reason but I could tell that the entire trip was presented. I thought Google
Maps did a better job because its list of directions stayed on screen and
didn't time out. With Google maps, I also had to double tap on the estimated
trip distance or time to get to the complete list of directions. The
disadvantage of Google versus Apple maps is that Google doesn't have access to
your contacts. I also wish they would let you share a directions list but I
couldn't figure out how with either of them.

I hope this helps.

Alan Lemly

Thanks, Sieghard - I've checked and I then changed text tone to None and then
back to the default tone and, as I did that, the phone pinged properly. But
when a friend texted me moments later, there was no sound. I've tried s soft
reboot and a hard reboot, I've checked volume levels in Settings--Sounds but
still no joy. Music plays but no sounds when typing nor when text messages are
sent or received. Harry

Re: Sounds disappeared!!

2017-02-18 Thread Marie
I have some similar sound problems with my 6S. And it seems like it happens
after using any type of BT headphones. It is just intermit tan but sometimes
it takes a re-boot to get it back to normal. What happened is when I end a
phone call, the speech is gone but I get all kinds of clicks when swiping
around the screen. I check with the three finger double tap to make sure
that speech is not accidently turned off. When this one occurs is when the
re-boot is the only thing I can do which gets speech back. The other thing
is that I don't hear any sound when I end the call or lock the screen and
occasionally no text alert sounds. Since they don't happen on any regular
basis it is almost impossible to find the problem. I am also running 10.2.1
I hate the thought but may have to try a total reset to factory and if that
does not work, off to the Apple store.

Siri issues

2017-02-18 Thread Marie
I would like to know if anyone else has this problem and if so, how do you deal
with it.
Sometimes after using Siri to ask a question the screen will retain the Siri
controls and I have a difficult time getting them to go away. Neither the home
button nor locking and locking the screen works consistently. It may take
several presses of the home button to clear the screen. It is very annoying so
if there is a solution, I would love to know what it might be. Thanks,
Marie

iOS 10.3 Public

2017-02-18 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

I'm a new member to the group, & both my wife & myself use the SE iPhones,
but we are fairly new at the smart phone thing. I'm totally blind & my wife
is sighted. Anyways, we've stayed at iOS 9.33 because of all the various
issues we've been hearing about from the 10.1 & 10.2 updates. Can anyone
tell us when the 10.3 update will come out of Beta, & be released to the
public. Nice to meet y'all, & thank you very much for your input.
Take care.

Re: iOS 10.3 Public

2017-02-18 Thread Richard Turner

Welcome Mike.
The reality is that no one knows when 10.3 will be released to the public, even
those of us using the beta.
Apple keeps that very quiet.
I'm sure you will hear about it on this list.

since you are in the US, try MapQuest. It has a nice option to list the

It is also free.
Google Maps may have that option as well, but I have not checked lately.

Sometimes after using Siri to ask a question the screen will retain the Siri

Yes it seems the different phones and IOS can cause different issues although
You would think we would all have the same problems. But when the different

Specifying the time of a recording in tunein?

2017-02-18 Thread Scott Davert
Hi all.
So I am trying to record one of those shows that's too silly to do an on cemand
service. Of course, it airs while I'm at will so I need to record it if I want
to catch it. SI understand that I can get to set an alarm/recording time within
the more options menu of the now play screen, and there is a switch button to
enable recording. My question, though, is if there is a way to specify the
amount of time the recording will go on for? The show I want to record is
slightly over 100 minutes long, but I'm not home until about 4 hours after it
airs. Is there a way to do this? If not with TuneIn, does anyone know of
another app?

Thanks so much in advance,
Scott

RE: Outlook for Ios

2017-02-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
What account type is your email? Is it IMAP or Exchange?

I tried the Outlook app for a while and while it's OK I find the native mail
account is more efficient especially if you use more than one email account. I
also didn't find dealing with contacts in Outlook intuitive, if you are in one
mailbox and want to go to another you have to actually double tap on a "Close"
button at the top left whereas in the native Mail app I can just do a scrub
gesture to go back tyo my main list of accounts. I also like how in the native
mail app I can show any mailbox I want on the main mail screen and I really
like the way how it now handles threaded messages with the Messages option in
the rotor. I know some people hate this, but I find it works exceptionally well
for me and I think in many cases those who don't like it may have just not
understood how it works and mastered how to navigate with it.

Sieghard

RE: iOS 10.3 Public

2017-02-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
We may not know when they release it, but I think it's a pretty safe guess to
say it will be in the next 3-4 weeks. 10.3 is now on Beta 2 I think, I would
assume beta 3 if there is a beta 3 will come out next week and while 10.2 had I
think 5 or 6 betas I still believe 10.3 will be publically released at some
point in March. With 10.2 Apple I think twice released two betas in one week so
the high number of betas doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be another 2
months.
This is just based on having been an iOS user since 2009 and having observed
how Apple does things for the last 8 years.

Sometimes after using Siri to ask a question the screen will retain the Siri

several presses of the home button to clear the screen. It is very annoying so
if there is a solution, I would love to know what it might be. Thanks,

RE: How can I preview driving directions to another city?

2017-02-18 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Thanks, Alan.

My first several go arounds trying to follow your description haven’t worked
for me, but I’m going to keep trying.

I can’T make it work on the iPhone 7 with iOS 10.21, but shortly after I sent
my earlier message, the directions started being announced on my AppleWatch.
The strange thing was that the iPhone still showed only the map and the first
“real time” instruction.

I’m glad to know it worked for you. So, now I know if I keep working at it, it
will eventually work for me, too.

Thanks again, Keith

I’ve found the route in AppleMaps, but it will only show me how to get started,
and, presumably, feed me info as we go. But, it also offers several alternative
routes that take a little longer but might be preferred. I’m guessing Maps

able to preview a route?

Thanks in advance, Keith

2017-02-18 Thread Alan Lemly
Keith,

I apologize but think I might have omitted a step with my Apple maps
instructions. After selecting the route and double tapping the estimated trip
time at the bottom of the screen, another screen opens with a double row of
buttons at the bottom with options like gas stations, dinner, and you should
double tap on details. This opens the list of entire trip instructions but
again, the list seems to time out and return to the map which seems like a bug.

Two things in iTunes 12!

2017-02-18 Thread englishrider91
Okay, so here's what's going on. I'm running the latest version of iTunes 12 on
my Windows 10 laptop. In order for me to have access to Apple Music, but Singh
certain things, like TV shows that I've made into MP3s, onto my phone, this is
the setup that I use.
One. I go into Settings/Music/ICloud music library, and turn that off. I then
connect my phone to my computer, and sync selected songs to my iPhone using the
sink selected artists, albums, etc. checkbox. After disconnecting my iPhone, I
didn't go back into settings and turn iCloud music library back on. I'm asked
whether I want to delete or keep the music on my iPhone, and I select keep.
Here's where the problem comes in. Not everything has synced to my phone. Most
things have, but I'm missing certain items, and I'm missing those same items
consistently. I'm super confused, to say nothing of annoyed! For the record, an
Apple rep walked me through how to do this, since for some reason, tracks
weren't uploading to my iCloud Music Library from my computer correctly. Also,
I didn't want everything in my library to be synced to my phone via iCloud
Music Library, only some things, and I gather you can't do that.

My second issue is, how in the world does fixing tags in iTunes 12 now work?
This used to be so easy and iTunes 11, and now it's really confusing! I can't
get anywhere with it! I find that if I use another program, such as Mp3 Tag, to
update tag info, then open iTunes, nothing refreshes. I've even tried the trick
of selecting all the tracks in the library, opening the Get Info dialogue, then
hitting OK to force the library to refresh, but that hasn't worked, either. I
had to resort to deleting the tracks, then re-adding them. I don't want to have
to keep doing this, that's why I'm wondering how the Get Info dialogue works
now.

Any help on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated! I'm going nuts
over here!

Thanks,
Ari
