Need a reliable light detector app

2017-11-26 Thread Kimberly
Hi all,

Many of the light bulbs in our house are now LED which makes it impossible for
me to know when a lamp is on or off. I'm looking for a reliable and easy to use
light detector for the iPhone. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Need a reliable light detector app

2017-11-26 Thread Richard Turner
Either Boop Light Detector, which is free, or the one simply called Light
Detector will work fine on LED light bulbs.

Boop emits beeps and the faster they are the brighter the light.

Light Detector emits a steady tone and the higher pitch it is, the brighter the
light.

I'd suggest reading about both in their descriptions.

First Example:

Went to the Get Books tab, Double tapped Browse BARD at the bottom.
Use headings in the rotor to get to Previously Downloaded Books near the bottom.
When I double tap the link the new page does not load. I just continue to sit
on the main page.
As I said, I even scrolled down and searched the screen for the actual link and
double tapped it that way.

Second example:

After going to the Get Books tab and double tapping Browse BARD.
I went to the Search box and typed The hard way, looking for a Jack Reacher
Novel.
There were tons of results. The book I was looking for was not on the first
page of results, so I tried double tapping the next link to go to the next page
of results, but nothing I did would take me to the next page.
I tried double tapping the next link both at the top and bottom, and using the
combo box to choose page 2 and double tap the go button, but nothing worked.

Third example:

I did another search from the main page and found a Jack Reacher book. This
time when I double tapped the link for the book, it took me to the details page
for that book.
Now I swiped down to the name of the book series and double tapped trying to
get the list of books in the series, but nothing happened.
So I tried double tapping the back button to go back to the list of books, but
I was stuck on the details page of that book. The only way I could do anything
was to close the BARD app, take it out of the app switcher, then restart it
from scratch.

It looks to me like a voice over focus issue. For some reason, links will just
not activate for me, and as you can imagine, that makes browsing BARD in the
app very difficult to almost impossible to do.
If you are not having these problems, then that is hope for me to just find out
why I am.
I did try doing some google searches to see if I had any problems in Safari,
but everything worked fine in Safari.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Chris

Re: instant pot question

2017-11-26 Thread Kay Malmquist
Oh, I am not saying that your info is not good. In fact, I have had that
zip file for a while and was glad I had it. I am just saying that if
someone buys the smart instant pot the layout will be different. A lot of
people can benefit from those files as long as they know that the button
layout is different. I will write up the smart layout here in a bit.

The only thing with that is the reference and most of the books there are
not for the smart pots. The layout is wrong and so on. The recipes would
be fine and some of the instructions would be applicable of course.

Hello,
I’m glad to know that it is not just me having this issue. I thought it was my

correctly. I think it’s something with the app. Not sure.
Hope this helps,

RE: Bard app help needed

2017-11-26 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Chris,
Well, I apparently have my BARD settings to display all results.
So, in the first two examples, I get all the results at once instead of having
to select a next page, etc.

But, the normal method is to double tap on the add to wish list link after the
description of the book.
I’ve used the series page for books before.
I just took a look at the Jack Reacher Novels and once in that list, there is
the add to wish list after each title description.
That is what you want, then you can download them from your wish list.

The other tip, and I’m sure you have already done this, but be sure the app
switcher is empty as you are asking the device to handle a large amount of data
at once.

HTH,
Richard

Re: Bard app help needed

2017-11-26 Thread regina alvarado
Richard, your answer on Bard brings up a question from me. Well, two questions.
Apple is now saying app switcher should not be cleared unless the phone is
frozen. Should I always clear the app switcher when I go to Bard? How often do
you or anyone else believe the switcher should be cleared? Apple says as little
as possible for battery life. I never closed it but only 1 or 2 times a week
just as I turn my phone off. Anyway, curious what others do.

Hello Richard,

Basically I have just been having hard times activating links while browsing

Here are a few examples that I have experienced over the past 24 hours.

First Example:

Went to the Get Books tab, Double tapped Browse BARD at the bottom.
Use headings in the rotor to get to Previously Downloaded Books near the bottom.
When I double tap the link the new page does not load. I just continue to sit

I clear mine when the phone/iPod/iPad begins not performing well, like when
links don’t seem to want to open, etc.
I probably clear it more than Apple says is needed, but I also have older
devices, iPhone 5s and iPod Touch 6th Generation.

I also sometimes clear the RAM by holding down the power button until it shows
Power Off, then I release the power button and hold down the home button until
VoiceOver says something.

Since Chris was not able to follow links, I thought clearing the app switcher
might help.

But, that is just one person’s opinion.

Hello Chris,

I cannot reproduce your results.

All of the links and navigation buttons/links works just as expected.

Perhaps you should first delete and then, reinstall the app to your iOS device.

Chime hasn't been updated for more than two years. That wouldn't

Westminster Chimes still gets updates and has the option of a voice

I've never been in the habit of clearing out the App Switcher. I've always just
figured IOS could handle it's resources better than I can. I clear out the App
Switcher whenever I think I'm having a problem or before restarting the phone,
like when I'm performing an update.

I’ve used the series page for books before.

I just took a look at the Jack Reacher Novels and once in that list, there

That is what you want, then you can download them from your wish list.

The other tip, and I’m sure you have already done this, but be sure the app

Hello Richard,

Basically I have just been having hard times activating links while
browsing BARD in the BARD app. This has been a problem for me running ios 10
and 11 on an iPhone 6, and now running ios 11 on my new iPhone 8.

I just set up my iPhone 8 last night, so the BARD app has just been
downloaded to the phone. I did notice an update in the app store this morning,
so I updated it in hopes it might take care of the problem, but the problem is
still there.

Here are a few examples that I have experienced over the past 24 hours.

First Example:

Went to the Get Books tab, Double tapped Browse BARD at the bottom.

Use headings in the rotor to get to Previously Downloaded Books near the
bottom.

When I double tap the link the new page does not load. I just continue to
sit on the main page.

As I said, I even scrolled down and searched the screen for the actual link
and double tapped it that way.

Second example:

After going to the Get Books tab and double tapping Browse BARD.

I went to the Search box and typed The hard way, looking for a Jack Reacher
Novel.

There were tons of results. The book I was looking for was not on the
first page of results, so I tried double tapping the next link to go to the
next page of results, but nothing I did would take me to the next page.

I tried double tapping the next link both at the top and bottom, and using
the combo box to choose page 2 and double tap the go button, but nothing worked.

Third example:

I did another search from the main page and found a Jack Reacher book.
This time when I double tapped the link for the book, it took me to the details
page for that book.

Now I swiped down to the name of the book series and double tapped trying
to get the list of books in the series, but nothing happened.

So I tried double tapping the back button to go back to the list of books,
but I was stuck on the details page of that book. The only way I could do
anything was to close the BARD app, take it out of the app switcher, then
restart it from scratch.

It looks to me like a voice over focus issue. For some reason, links will
just not activate for me, and as you can imagine, that makes browsing BARD in
the app very difficult to almost impossible to do.

If you are not having these problems, then that is hope for me to just find
out why I am.

I did try doing some google searches to see if I had any problems in
Safari, but everything worked fine in Safari.

Any ideas or help would b

RE: Smart Washer and Drier

2017-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I was waiting for these for a long time, at the CES for the last 3 or 4 years
they are always talking about it, but nothing really has been widely adopted.
Last year I finally purchased a Miele washer and dryer, very expensive, but
there are no dials, all is controlled by buttons and while some of them get
pushed and rotate through various options, if you turn the appliance off (these
actually have real on/off butons) and start over it always defaults back to the
same order so if, for example, I select the “Master Care” program then there is
another button where you can cycle through 6 or 8 different programs and it
always starts at the top so if you write down the order it’s no problem, also,
I was able to read the LCD screen with Talking Goggles, haven’t tried it yet
with the Seeing AI Short Text function, but it will probably work even better.
Like I said, beautiful appliances, they are rated for a 20-year life span but
they are expensive. They did have a less expensive set, but it had a dial which
just turns and turns, no stops and no good way to figure out what’s what.
Bosch I believe has some sort of smart technology out, but when I last checked
it was available in Europe, but not yet in North America.
I wouldn’t touch a Samsung washer and dryer or, for that matter, dish washer or
stove with a 10 foot pole, talk to any appliance repair person and the German
and Swedish stuff is clearly superior. Asko is from Sweden and I think so is
Electrolux, with the German brands Miele is probably at the top, then there is
Bosch and AEG (the latter is less well-known).

Sieghard

RE: clearing the app switcher

2017-11-26 Thread Richard Turner
If you really want to know what is “best”, then you could call Apple, assuming
Apple always knows best.

I personally go by what seems to work best on my specific device.

I don’t mean that to sound negative, I usually go with what Apple says.
Someone on the list earlier said that Apple now says you don’t need to clear
the app switcher very much.
But, I have no idea if that is only with the newer devices, iOS 11 and after,
or what?
People like to quote Apple having said x, y or z, but they are hardly ever
specific. I know at least once, someone quoted an Apple support person saying
one thing and another saying the opposite.

So, I mostly now go with what works best for me and my devices.

I willing to be proven wrong.

iTunes, and accessibility

2017-11-26 Thread Pablo Morales
Hello all,

I haven't used iTunes in a very long time, and I am seeing that the iTunes
versions have changed a lot, even the accessibility now works in a different
way.

Someone in the list could help me with this program?

Thanks

AirPods and status bar

2017-11-26 Thread regina alvarado
I bit the bullet and bought AirPods from Apple. I see the AirPods connected
icon in my status bar. However, they only show as connected. Is there a place
where I can check the battery status on them? I was caught off guard and one
pod went dead after 2 hours talk. Thank you for anyone who can shed some light

RE: AirPods and status bar

2017-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
On the Today screen (the screen you get to when you swipe left to right with 3
fingers when you are on the first home screen. You can also get to it if you
place focus on the picker control between the dock and the last row of home
screen icons, where it says "2 of 4" or however many home screens you have.
Your main home screen is "2" because the Today screen is "1", flick down with

There is an "Edit" button at the very bottom where you can control which items

RE: Smart Washer and Drier

2017-11-26 Thread Richard Petty
There’s an article in the most recent Access World about some efforts from a
major manufacturer, Whirlpool, I think. They have created a primitive system of
audible controls. It’s both very disappointing and a little bit encouraging.
Disappointing because they haven’t come far at all. Possibly encouraging
because one department of the company is looking at the issue.

Two years ago we found Whirlpool units with traditional dials and buttons.
Dials click into place and stay there until you change them. The dials have
raised indicator marks. After memorizing what each dial and button does and
their settings, the units are easy to use. They would be easy to label with
Braille Dymo tape, but we haven’t done that.

Sending folders in Outlook, App, used on iPhone

2017-11-26 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I use the Outlook App on my iPhone. From what I can tell, not all folders sent
with the mail on my laptop, and the mail on my phone.
For instance, on my laptop, I have a message in my drafts folder. But within
the Outlook on my iPhone, that folder is blank.

Is there a way to correct this?
If so, what do I need to do?
I’ve looked through the settings, but I can’t find what I need. Also, I don’t
know if this will make a difference. But I don’t use Outlook as my client on my
laptop. I use Thunderbird.

Thank you,

Terri

Purchased Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1

2017-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

Well, after checking the emerging Cyber Monday deals I didn't see any deals on
the Instant Pot Smart/Bluetooth cooker.
I did, however, find the new Instant Pot Ultra Electric Pressure Cooker, 6Qt
10-in-1, Stainless Steel (2017
Model)
The above link is for the Amazon Canada store where it is regular $199.99 ($10
more than the Smart/Bluetooth model) and it's currently on sale for $119.99, a
nice saving and converted to US this is less than $100.
This is not a connected model, but it's the newest in their line-up with a
total of 16 programs including egg programs and it also allows you to adjust
for altitude which to me makes a lot of sense in a device like this since
altitude effects the boiling temperature of water.
At sea level water boils at 100 ° Celsius (212 ° Fahrenheit.
If you live in Denver, the mile-high city, water boils already at 94.7 Celsius
or 202.5 Fahrenheit and being able to adjust for this will make the cooking
more precise.
I know this Instant Pot is not a connected device hence it could be considered
off-topic. If Mark decides it's so I won't say anything more, if not I'll post
a bit of a review as to the accessibility once I have it.
The description says it has a single dial and you apparently just turn the dial
to the program you want and press it in to start. Who knows, maybe it will be
completely inaccessible in which case I'll probably return it unused, but I
liked the idea of the altitude adjustment and the extra programs.
I wonder if Instant Pot will continue to make a smart/connected model, in the
CBC News article they hinted at the fact they were just getting started and a
bunch of new devices from them would hit the market in 2018.
I did also find an Instant Pot "Sous Vide" cooker, but decided not to order it
at this point although the idea of this cooking style sounds interesting. For
those who don't know what it is, here is a short summary from Wikipedia:

Sous-vide, French for "under vacuum", is a method of cooking in which food is
vacuum-sealed in a plastic pouch and then placed in a water bath or steam
environment for longer than normal cooking times (usually 1 to 7 hours, up to
48 or more in some cases) at an accurately regulated temperature much lower
than normally used for cooking, typically around 55 to 60 °Celsius (131 to 140
°F) for meat, higher for vegetables. The intent is to cook the item evenly,
ensuring that the inside is properly cooked without overcooking the outside,
and to retain moisture.
it's a way to cook meat, poultry, fish, vegis, fruit etc. very slowly in hot
water, but what you are cooking is of course not just in the water (that would
be simply boiling it), but it cooks inside a bag or something like that. it's
contained in

The Instant Pot Sous Vide cooker can cook things for up to 72 hours and
maintain the set temperature to half a degree Celsius I think and while it is
it's own device, apparently you can use it with a 6 or 8 quart Instant Pot, not
sure exactly how it works.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: clearing the app switcher

2017-11-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think anything has changed. For years now, Apple has claimed
that you don't need to force close your apps, and this makes sense,
since why would a company develop a multitasking operating system if it
can't manage resources across multiple apps? That doesn't mean people
won't claim that force closing all of your apps is a good idea and
recommend that you should do it regularly.

You don't need to call up Apple to find out. A web search will reveeal
articles like the folloing:

* https://9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/should-you-quit-ios-apps-answer/

* https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330

*

*
http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/10/21/stop-force-closing-apps-on-your-iphone-its-not-making-it-run-faster-or-last-longer

Of course, you should close an app if you're having trouble with it, and
closing all apps and restarting your phone is always a good debugging
step if you're having systemic problems with your iPhone. If you think
that regularly closing all of your apps is improving the performance of
your device then by all means go ahead and do it. It doesn't really do
any harm except take a bit more of your time and use up a bit more of
your phone's resources, such as battery life.

I personally go by what seems to work best on my specific device.

I don’t mean that to sound negative, I usually go with what Apple
says.  Someone on the list earlier said that Apple now says you don’t
need to clear the app switcher very much.

But, I have no idea if that is only with the newer devices, iOS 11 and

People like to quote Apple having said x, y or z, but they are hardly
ever specific.  I know at least once, someone quoted an Apple support
person saying one thing and another saying the opposite.

So, I mostly now go with what works best for me and my devices.

I willing to be proven wrong.

Hi all.  I remember from a long time back someone saying that it was a
very good idea to clear the app switcher and close all apps very
frequently.  I clear mine every day or every other day.  Is there a
change since several updates ago?  Just wondering what is best to do.

The bluetooth one also supports altitude. I'm sure yours will have
tactile buttons as all of th eothers do. The bigest reason to want
bluetooth one instead is to read the temerature gage and some of the
errors that do occur with it. I don't use any of the programmable
stuff even on the bluetooth one. I'd be fine with the regular one but
it's hard to remember over 16 buttons, LOL.

Hi Sieghard,
I did not buy that one because I called customer support and the person
there actually went and got one to try the dial for me. He told me that
there was no detent on the dial and you could not tell when the dial was
pointed at the item you wanted to select. You could not put a dot on the
dial because it never ended up in the same position as you turned it. I
hope you find out differently, but I steered clear of that one because of
what that support guy told me. It was really nice of him to get one and try
it. He really seemed to understand what I needed to know. Let us know what
you find out, would you?

  Hi,

Well, after checking the emerging Cyber Monday deals I didn’t see any

I did, however, find the new Instant Pot Ultra Electric Pressure Cooker,

Celsius or 202.5 Fahrenheit and being able to adjust for this will make the
cooking more precise.

I know this Instant Pot is not a connected device hence it could be
considered off-topic. If Mark decides it’s so I won’t say anything more, if

The description says it has a single dial and you apparently just turn the

will be completely inaccessible in which case I’ll probably return it
unused, but I liked the idea of the altitude adjustment and the extra

I wonder if Instant Pot will continue to make a smart/connected model, in
the CBC News article they hinted at the fact they were just getting started
and a bunch of new devices from them would hit the market in 2018.

I did also find an Instant Pot “Sous Vide” cooker, but decided not to
order it at this point although the idea of this cooking style sounds
interesting. For those who don’t know what it is, here is a short summary
from Wikipedia:

There's no dial as far as I know of. None of the rest have a dial.
They all have tactile buttons so I imagine this one does too. That's
the trouble with asking customer service. I always have someone look
at the pictures and describe the entire thing. And in this case, you
can download the manual in advance. But I doubt there's a dial of any
kind on it. I'll be very surprised if it's not useable.

RE: Purchased Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1

2017-11-26 Thread Cristóbal
That sounds like the model we saw on Amazon.de. I think it was going for
something like €148 and the regular 8 quart device for €150 from €200.

I'm pretty certain the bluetooth connected model also has altitude adjustment.
Without looking at the app on my phone right now, I'm pretty sure I enabled
this feature when setting the instant pot up and it gave my altitude at around
1500 SQ-FT above sea-level.

That aside, I'd be interested to know if the model you ordered is reasonably
accessible even without bluetooth connectivity. Marking it up with dots and
maybe labeling with Brailed dymo tape (for those of us who read Braille) to get
away from having to get the more expensive bluetooth one.

The wife's already been making noise about getting another instant pot so this
would be good to know. Our luck, every single model appeared to be on sale this
week, but for the all important bluetooth one.

Keep us posted.

I did also find an Instant Pot “Sous Vide” cooker, but decided not to order it
at this point although the idea of this cooking style sounds interesting. For
those who don’t know what it is, here is a short summary from Wikipedia:

Sous-vide, French for "under vacuum", is a method of cooking in which food is
vacuum-sealed in a plastic pouch and then placed in a water bath or steam
environment for longer than normal cooking times (usually 1 to 7 hours, up to
48 or more in some cases) at an accurately regulated temperature much lower
than normally used for cooking, typically around 55 to 60 °Celsius (131 to 140
°F) for meat, higher for vegetables. The intent is to cook the item evenly,
ensuring that the inside is properly cooked without overcooking the outside,
and to retain moisture.

it’s a way to cook meat, poultry, fish, vegis, fruit etc. very slowly in hot
water, but what you are cooking is of course not just in the water (that would
be simply boiling it), but it cooks inside a bag or something like that. it’s

The Instant Pot Sous Vide cooker can cook things for up to 72 hours and
maintain the set temperature to half a degree Celsius I think and while it is
it’s own device, apparently you can use it with a 6 or 8 quart Instant Pot, not
sure exactly how it works.

Sieghard

RE: Purchased Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1

Hi Deb,

TThis new "Ultra" model just came out this year and it has a single dial.
Now, Kay, if what you said is correct then I guess it will go back in the box.
Where did you call, do you have a direct number for Instant Pot? I guess I
could still cancel it and wonder if I shouldn't do so after what you said. I
was sort of hoping the dial would click with each turn.

There's no dial as far as I know of. None of the rest have a dial.
They all have tactile buttons so I imagine this one does too. That's the
trouble with asking customer service. I always have someone look at the
pictures and describe the entire thing. And in this case, you can download the
manual in advance. But I doubt there's a dial of any kind on it. I'll be very
surprised if it's not useable.

In the iBook app on your iOS device, select the search tab, near the lower

iBooks Collections puzzle

2017-11-26 Thread Harry Bell
Has anyone else noticed this? When I purchase an iBook, I often use Select then
Move to add it to a Collection folder I have created. Since a few months ago,
whenever I add an iBook to any Collection, it disappears from the Books
Collection. This never used to happen! Anyone else?
Cheers
Harry

2017-11-26 Thread Kay Malmquist
No, the new 10 in one does have a dial and I did have someone look at the
picture. Sorry but this time you are wrong and customer service is right.
They aren't all idiots. My sister looked at the picture and saw the dial on
the front. Absolutely no buttons on that one. The one you and I have are
older models, thus the buttons.

I decided not to cancel this order, the manager of my retail store is getting

order the bluetooth version.

Thanks, I'll write it down, I did actually go on their website and it was
quite easy to find both an email address as well as a toll free number. It's
different than yours, so I'll try both.
I decided not to cancel this order, the manager of my retail store is
getting married this coming week and if after checking it out I find it's
not accessible or not accessible enough I'll give it to them as a wedding
gift and order the bluetooth version.

Take care,
Sieghard

Yes, I sure do have a number for you. It is
1-800-828-7280

I realize you are in Canada and hope that number works for you. Let me know
if it doesn't and I'll look for a local one for you. Hope this helps.

Hi Deb,

TThis new "Ultra" model just came out this year and it has a single dial.
Now, Kay, if what you said is correct then I guess it will go back in the
box. Where did you call, do you have a direct number for Instant Pot? I
guess I could still cancel it and wonder if I shouldn't do so after what you
said. I was sort of hoping the dial would click with each turn.

Regards,
Sieghard

There's no dial as far as I know of. None of the rest have a dial.
They all have tactile buttons so I imagine this one does too. That's the
trouble with asking customer service. I always have someone look at the
pictures and describe the entire thing. And in this case, you can download
the manual in advance. But I doubt there's a dial of any kind on it. I'll be
very surprised if it's not useable.

Hi Sieghard,
I did not buy that one because I called customer support and the
person there actually went and got one to try the dial for me. He
told me that there was no detent on the dial and you could not tell
when the dial was pointed at the item you wanted to select. You could
not put a dot on the dial because it never ended up in the same
position as you turned it. I hope you find out differently, but I
steered clear of that one because of what that support guy told me.
It was really nice of him to get one and try

it. He really seemed to understand what I needed to know. Let us
know what

you find out, would you?

  Hi,

Well, after checking the emerging Cyber Monday deals I didn't see
any deals on the Instant Pot Smart/Bluetooth cooker.

I did, however, find the new Instant Pot Ultra Electric Pressure
Cooker, 6Qt 10-in-1, Stainless Steel (2017 Model)

The above link is for the Amazon Canada store where it is regular
$199.99

($10 more than the Smart/Bluetooth model) and it's currently on sale
for $119.99, a nice saving and converted to US this is less than $100.

This is not a connected model, but it's the newest in their line-up
with a

total of 16 programs including egg programs and it also allows you to
adjust

for altitude which to me makes a lot of sense in a device like this
since altitude effects the boiling temperature of water.

At sea level water boils at 100 ° Celsius (212 ° Fahrenheit.

If you live in Denver, the mile-high city, water boils already at
94.7 Celsius or 202.5 Fahrenheit and being able to adjust for this
will make the

cooking more precise.

I know this Instant Pot is not a connected device hence it could be
considered off-topic. If Mark decides it's so I won't say anything
more, if

not I'll post a bit of a review as to the accessibility once I have it.

The description says it has a single dial and you apparently just
turn the

dial to the program you want and press it in to start. Who knows,
maybe it will be completely inaccessible in which case I'll probably
return it unused, but I liked the idea of the altitude adjustment and
the extra programs.

I wonder if Instant Pot will continue to make a smart/connected
model, in

the CBC News article they hinted at the fact they were just getting
started

and a bunch of new devices from them would hit the market in 2018.
