Re: how do I unsub from this list

2019-06-08 Thread Jewel
Joshua! I am not tethered to my iPhone as many others seem to be, and, only
use it for playing one
or two games and reading audio books that I download from the library, but I do
empathise with you
re your frustrations.
Regarding the repeated request/demands that we enter our Apple password when
there is not the least
reason for us having to do so; in many cases, you can just one finger double
tap on "Not now" and
you can go on doing whatever you were doing!
However, like you, I cannot download any apps from the store as it refuses,
point blank, to accept
my password which, to the very best of my knowledge, is 100% correct.

Subject: how do I unsub from this list

Hi to all. How do I unsubscribe from this list. I never should have
gotten an iPhone in the first place. I don't want to take the time to
learn how to type on the stupid keyboard on the screen. I hate the
idea of having to type in my apple ID when I want to download an app.
Stupid security. My flip phone was so much easier. I could just turn
it on and it would power up and away I would go. No having to type in
my stupid pass code to unlock my phone. I never should have let that
article I read about seeing AI influence my decision to get an iPhone.
On Monday I'm contacting apple to see about getting it returned and
most of my money back. With apple care and the cost of my phone, I
spent almost $1000. I could have bought a great desktop computer for
that much money and it has a real keyboard on it.

Re: Gesture to stop song preview in itunes store?

2019-06-08 Thread Richard Turner

Usually another one finger double tap will stop the preview unless you have
touched somewhere else on the screen.
The preview button turns into a stop preview.
I have also used the two finger double tap successfully, but it has been a
while.
You can also bring up the app switcher and close the app.

2019-06-08 Thread Richard Turner
Joshua,
There is a new flip phone that talks, reads missed calls, you can text the old
fashioned way, and it will read the text messages you receive and it has lots
of high quality voices on it; its called the Lucia phone.
www.luciaphone.com

You should know that you can set your iPhone so that you do not have to enter
your password for free apps, and as has been said, you do not have to use a
passcode.
But, flat screen phones are not for everyone.
Best of luck,

Go into settings and swipe right until you find 'touch ID and passcode'.

From there you can turn off your passcode.

Also, there are some small blue tooth keyboards that work well with the

The same thing happened to me with my blue tooth hearing aids. I had taken

Consequently, all the sound from my phone was going to the hearing aids.

a funny, yet frightening, issue with my phone

2019-06-08 Thread R Van Lant
I have to share this story, in case any of you have the same trouble. Twice in
the last two weeks, I've had situation where my phone suddenly has no sound
output. It happened this morning and, until I figured out the problem, I had
totally forgotten a similar thing had caused the problem two weeks ago, right
as I had called for an Uber. I was thinking that my 6S phone was giving up the
ghost on me. At least with today, I has some plug in earbuds and could
successfully hear with those, but unplugging them resulted in silence. After
several resets of the phone and plugging it back in, I was about to resign
myself to having to rely on earbuds for the rest of my phone's existence, when
I noticed my Bluetooth earbuds on a nearby table. Yes, it turns out that the
night before I had forgotten to turn off my Bluetooth earbuds. When my corded
earbuds were plugged in, the sounds worked fine, but as soon as I unplugged the
cord, the sound was going to the earbuds across the room. Phew. When I
discovered this, I recalled that two weeks ago, as I was waiting for the Uber
and my phone stopped speaking, I had later discovered that the bone conduction
headset in my backpack was getting turned on by something pressing on the power
button. Pretty scary when you cannot see the screen and think the phone has
flat out died!Hoping a few of your can get a laugh with me about this and
keep it in the back of your head, should it ever happen to you.

2019-06-08 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hi, as a technology teacher, I have to say give the iphone experience a few
weeks to a month. Check out the basics podcasts on Applevis, or maybe someone
can be a mentor for you. It takes a few weeks to get in the mindset of the
iphone. If you're a braille writer, then eventually you will enjoy braille
screen input instead of the screen keyboard. You can set the typing mode to
touch tyling so you lift up on the letter you want. Give the iphone some more
time. You'll not regret it.

ApplePay With Multiple Cards Revisited?

2019-06-08 Thread Fazil
Hi, list.

My ApplePay has two cards attached to it. This morning I used ApplePay for
the first time.

I wasn't sure whether I should open my phone to any apps or the cardreader
would take care of the locked-screen. I hesitantly opened wallet with
voiceover on,, highlighted the card I wanted to use and gave the phone to
the clerk When VO talked about fingerprints, I took the phone and touched
HomeButton with the required finger and heard the approving-ding.

Later, I realized that the payment was made from the wrong card.

For the future reference, may I know whether I should open my wallet, or the
phone with locked screen would get activated when I hover it over the card
processing machine?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: somewhat newbie question: how do I get consistent results from VoiceOver

2019-06-08 Thread Richard Turner

Don,
I assume you have the list of the gestures.
A two finger swipe down will read from wherever the VoiceOver cursor is to the
end if you do not touch the screen or turn the device from portrait to
landscaped, or back without the orientation being locked. If you want to read
from the very top down, swipe up with two fingers. That works best in email,
rather than on web pages as you often do not want to read everything from the
top of a web page.
To interrupt the continuous reading, you just touch with two fingers.
That should be immediate. If it isn't, something went wrong.
And, if you have interrupted the reading, and not touched the screen again,
another two finger touch will continue reading from where it had stopped.
But, yes, practice gets closer to perfect.
HTH,
Richard

Hi Don,

The only thing I can suggest is to practice with VO practice. I'm not saying
you don't know how, but even I sometimes go into the practice mode. It helps!

Re: Is anyone using an app called Righter?

2019-06-08 Thread Kathy Brandt
I am thinking the same thing, that they just don’t want to be bothered. It is
the dating app. And as I said, I am on the latest version of iOS 12 on my
devices.

Is that the dating app?
an iPod 6th generation should work just fine. It says it requires only iOS 11.
It even says it work on the iPod; and when the app came out, I'm sure the iPod
Touch 6th generation was the latest iPod available. So, my guess, as judgmental
as it may be, he doesn't want to be bothered.
I have no need of a dating app, so won't be downloading it.
Best of luck with it.

I was away from this list for over six months as I had total shoulder
replacement surgery so if this has just been discussed please accept my
apology. I am wondering if the voiceover has been improved with the my
doorbell app. I looked at it over a year ago and it wasn't totally accessible.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is anyone using an app called Righter?

2019-06-08 Thread Kathy Brandt
I cannot access a lot of it on my own, which the developer is blaming on that I
have an iPod six GEN and an iPhone 5s, saying that though I am on the most
recent updates, they are older devices. They claim other blind users are
functioning with the app just fine, but various buttons for me don’t read out,
I just get clicks, which may or may not work. So, writing in case anyone else
is using and might give me some pointers. Thank you :-)

Joshua, we're so happy for you, it's so exciting getting your iphone. When

you get your phone set up, make sure you have something to write with, to

write how your name and password details are being filled in. This way to

ensure you know all the details, such as what letters were capitalized and

letters that were lower case, any punctuation etc. It's good to ensure that

everything gose as right as it should go. when we got our se phones the

t-mobile store didn't fill some of our details in right, where the apple

id was concerned. Wayne fixed his and he's going to fix mine. Also write

down the answers to your security questions. Having something so new to you,

the last thing you need is any confusion, it's so important to write all

your information down. You wouldn't want the confusion like I had, they

asked me how I spell my last name. After I told them how to spell my last

name They actually spelled my last name wrong. So make sure they confirm to

you what they are filling in. We were so knew to the phones and when we

asked if they would help correct it, they said they weren't responsible for

it, and we'd have to find our own way to get it done. That's nothing you

want to hear when you're really new to something. So we went to another

t-mobile store and they straightened some of it out, and we're getting the

rest of it done since we know more of what we're doing now.

New android-iOS list at groups.io

2019-06-08 Thread Alan Lemly
I've gotten permission to post the below from the list moderator Mark
Taylor. If you have any questions or comments about the new list, write to
me directly at wale...@gmail.com as opposed to replying to the viphone list.

Hi List,

I've created a new list named android-...@groups.io to hopefully cover the
same topics previously addressed by the blindphones list shut down by
Jonathan Mosen earlier this week. Topics related to Android and iOS and
devices running them from a visually impaired perspective will be allowed
and I'll make sure to assign a co-moderator so the list can continue into
the future even if I cannot. To subscribe, send a blank email to:

android-ios+subscr...@groups.io

Hope to see you on the list.

How to Dictate in Different Languages on the iPhone

2019-06-08 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Many folks aren't aware that iPhones and iPads have the ability to
dictate in different languages, so
if you'd like one email to go out in French, and the following one to be
in Spanish or English, that's perfectly doable with just a quick icon press.
But in order to use the multi-language dictate feature, you first need
to set it up. This is accomplished by configuration additional dictation
languages as extra keyboards in your iOS settings. Here's how it works.

 Add Keyboard Languages in iOS

1. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and select General >
   Keyboard > Keyboards.
2. Under that, you'll find a list of the current keyboards that you're
using; to add a new dictation language, select Add New Keyboard.
3. You'll then see a list of all the languages you can use. Find and
touch the one you'd like to dictate with. And that's it! Your
language will be added to your keyboards list.

 Using Multi-language Dictation

Once you've added additional language keyboards, here's how you can
dictate in multiple languages.

1. Place your cursor where you'd like to start dictating on your device
(in the body of an email, within a text message, etc.). When the
on-screen keyboard appears afterward, you can press and hold the
microphone button at the bottom to switch dictation languages by
keeping your finger on the screen and sliding up to the correct one.
2. You'll see a printed indicator of which language you're using when
your device starts listening for dictation. Just start speaking in
your chosen language and your text will appear in the app.

To turn this off, go back to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards,
touch "Edit," then tap the red minus sign next to the language you want
to remove. That will bring up a "Delete" button, which will get rid of
whichever one you tapped.
Now, this doesn't support all languages—for example, if you want to
dictate in Cherokee, you're unfortunately out of luck—but learning to
dictate in different languages is a fun way to brush up on your Spanish
or French. Without having to even type your own accent marks!

macOS Catalina System Requirements

2019-06-08 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
This week at its annual WWDC conference
, Apple unveiled the next major
version of its desktop operation system. macOS Catalina
 (technically macOS 10.15
)
introduces a number of new features and refinements. Catalina will ship
for free on all new Macs when it launches later this year, but will your
older Mac be able to run it?

Here's a look at macOS Catalina system requirements and new features.

 macOS Catalina New Features

There are hundreds
 of new features
and changes in macOS Catalina, but major features include:

 * Dedicated Music, TV, and Podcast Apps: Apple is finally killing off
the do-everything iTunes (in macOS at least

)
and is replacing it with dedicated apps for Music, TV, and Podcasts.
Users can enjoy these different types of content in their own
standalone apps, while iOS device syncing will now be handled via
   Finder.
 * Smarter Photo Browsing: The Photos app in macOS (and iOS, too) is
getting smarter with new automatically generated views of moments by
days, months, and years. The app can also recognize your contacts
and display albums of special moments such as birthdays and
   anniversaries.
 * Collaborative Notes: The macOS Notes app is gaining new features
such as a visual gallery view for quickly browsing and finding
specific notes, shared folders to collaborate on notes with other
users, and better task management for managing checklist items.
 * Using iPad as a Mac Display: Even though this feature has been
available via third party apps for
years, Apple is introducing a feature called Sidecar that lets you
use your iPad as a second display for your Mac. It won't work on
some older Mac models, but for those with newer devices you can now
have a second display or drawing tablet anywhere you go.
 * Screen Time for Mac: Last year, Apple introduced Screen Time for
iOS, letting users monitor their device and app usage and set limits
for minors. Now Screen Time is coming to the Mac with the same usage
   tracking and limitation features.
 * Accessibility Features: Apple is introducing even more accessibility
features in macOS Catalina, including revamped voice control, the
ability to zoom selected areas of the screen on a second display,
and a dedicated window for enlarging selected text when you hover
   you cursor over it.

 macOS Catalina System Requirements

The good news is that Apple has a relatively broad list of supported
Macs for Catalina, even if it is slightly reduced from last year's
Mojave. To run macOS Catalina, you'll need a Mac meeting the following
requirements or better:

 * MacBook (early 2015 or later)
 * MacBook Air (mid 2012 or later)
 * MacBook Pro (mid 2012 or later)
 * Mac mini (late 2012 or later)
 * iMac (late 2012 or later)
 * iMac Pro (all models)
 * Mac Pro (late 2013 or later)

macOS Catalina will be a free update available from the Mac App Store
this fall. If you don't have a compatible Mac, you may still be able to
run Catalina unofficially. For the past several macOS updates, third
party utilities have allowed owners of
certain older unsupported Macs to install the latest macOS version. Some
features won't work as expected, and of course there's no support from
Apple if you go this route, but check out this utilities as we near
Catalina's public release if you're interested.
