How to stop strangers from connecting to your AirPlay on Apple TV, 9 to 5 Mac

2020-09-12 Thread M. Taylor
How to stop strangers from connecting to your AirPlay on Apple TV
By Benjamin Mayo

AirPlay is Apple's feature for casting or screen mirroring content from your
iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a TV. You can use AirPlay on Apple TV set-top boxes
or compatible smart TVs like Samsung or LG.

However, one frustration many people run into is that by default anyone
nearby can connect to AirPlay.

If you live in a dense area like an apartment block, this can be very
annoying.

The default AirPlay options let anyone that is in Wi-Fi range see your Apple
TV and try to AirPlay to it. If you are just trying to sit back and enjoy
some TV, at the very least it is annoying for that to be interrupted by
AirPlay connection dialogs.
You can stop this from happening in the Apple TV Settings app.

1.
Open the Settings app.
2.
Select AirPlay & HomeKit.
3.
Select Allow Access.
4.
Change the setting from 'Everyone' to 'Anyone on the Same Network'.

This means that the AirPlay option will only appear for people whose devices
are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Apple TV itself, preventing
people in adjacent houses from being able to connect. This will prevent
those annoying PIN code request pop-ups from showing as well.
Of course, this also means that any guests that come and visit will also
need to be on the Wi-Fi to AirPlay. A more restrictive option will be
available if you have configured HomeKit on your Apple TV: the setting 'Only
People Sharing This Home' means that AirPlay is only available to people
that are nearby and set up as user profiles in the Home app. This might be
useful if you don't want guests to be able to use AirPlay but do want to let
them on the Wi-Fi.

These settings apply to all Apple TVs and HomeKit speakers in your home. You
can customize on a per-device basis on the Apple TV if the setting 'Allow
Nearby to AirPlay' is visible on your screen. This setting should be set to
off if you don't want anyone else trying to connect. (This paragraph is only
relevant to you if your Apple TV is connected to HomeKit.)

For additional protection, you can also require AirPlay device requests to
need to enter a password.

It will be smaller than your 6S, but I don't need a large screen, as am totally

Apple mostly just calls it the iPhone SE, but to help distinguish it from the

great phone.
Here is the link to the apple page with the details about it:

Hi my son informed me that Apple has a phone called the S E 2020 which is a
modified 8. It has a model with 256gig. I now am using the 6 S with 128 gig.
I am told that the S E 2020 also has a glass back as the 6 s is metal. Does
anyone have any comments on this? Would I be good to upgrade to the s e 2020?
I did notice that when I installed the Audible.com app that to purchase books
from the app, I would need IOS 13 or higher.
According to my settings, I am up to date with IOS 12plus. I don't want to
spend $549 unless I am getting a much better phone. Greatly appreciate any

Hi,

I went from a 6 Plus to the 2020. I quickly got used to smaller form factor and
the performance has been good. Just get a good case for it. With the glass
back, it's a slippery little devil. The lack of a separate earbud jack is
annoying but not a deal-breaker. touch ID has been very reliable and I got uded
to the new home button without difficulty. I've been happy with the decision to
upgrade.

Hi Andy,

I'll be upgrading to a SE2020 soon, I hope. But, I had an iPhone 6S, and I was
running the latest IOS on it. The version was either iOS 13.6 or
13.7 with no problems. I wonder why your 6S wouldn't update to the latest
version?

Andy and Shubert,
Once you get your new iPhone SE, you will need to take it and your 6S to your
phone service provider store to have the sim card changed to your new phone.
They should also be able to help you with getting your data from your 6S to the
SE. It is always exciting to get a new phone. have fun.

Andy,

I agree with what others have said about the SE 2020/SE second generation with
the exception that unless you're currently using the 6S Plus, the form factor
for the SE 2020 should be the same as that of the 6S. I'd also suggest you
consider purchasing your new SE directly from Apple using the Apple Store app.
You can purchase it with no interest payments over two years and if you have an
Apple Card, you can receive 3% rewards on the total cost.

Thanks a lot, folks. I did add the keyboard, but I don't like that as well as I
like your method. I am now holding the key down and sliding to get the symbol I
want. It's tricky, but I like it better.

RE: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Carolyn
Ray did phone-to-phone on my 11 from the original SE. It came up with all my
settings and my Home Screen arranged like I had it, onl.y with a few more
things, since the SE did not have but 20 icons on the Home Page.

Hi Andy,

I'd suggest you make an iCloud backup of your 6S just before setting up your
new SE. You can also do a phone to phone transfer when you have the SE and I
believe phone to phone might actually transfer more to the new phone than
restoration of an iCloud backup does. I wrote a very detailed post on setting

Greatly appreciate any
help here. Andy and Shubert

I got a clear case to show off the red iPhone.
If you plan to use a wireless charger, make sure the case says it works with
wireless chargers. Any case that fits the 8 will also fit the new SE.

I've been happy with the decision to
upgrade.

Andy and Shubert,
Once you get your new iPhone SE, you will need to take it and your 6S to
your phone service provider store to have the sim card changed to your new
phone. They should also be able to help you with getting your data from
your 6S to the SE. It is always exciting to get a new phone. have fun.

Greatly appreciate any
help here. Andy and Shubert

Re: Recommendations for Real Estate Apps

2020-09-12 Thread Dan Rathburn

I haven't had to deal with those parameters so didn't notice that
accessibility had been broken. A bit of a work-around is to go into
'property type' and deselect any you're not interested in and go to 'Number
of bedrooms and bathrooms' and reset to zero. Select the price range as
usual. Not ideal but it makes the results more managable. I've sent feedback
to the developer about the issues.

Hi, I've found the realtor.com app has lost some accessibility. I cannot
change things like number of bedrooms or baths. Also changing the distance
for a commute.

Anyone having these issues?

Hi, can anyone recommend a good accessible iOS app for searching for
rental properties? Or, if you know of good services with accessible
websites, that would be great as well. Thank you in advance.

RE: looking for accessible apps for emergency info, wildfire especially. I live in Portland Oregon

2020-09-12 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Twitter and Twitterrific are the ones I use. Twitter just for the notifications
and use Twitterrific as my main Twitter app.
Another service/app I forgot to mention is PulsePoint
https://www.pulsepoint.org/
The iOS app is pretty accessible. The only issue I have with it is the
notification section under settings could be more accessible with VO, but if
you've got access to some eyeballs, you can have them help you select which
notifications to enable etc. Goes without saying, it would be better if they
just addressed this accessibility shortfall, but until they do...

I think someone suggested to try Newsline.
I took that suggestion and I didn't find any alerts. I know in the past I
remember seeing alerts, but today I didn't find any, but that is a good idea to
at least check.

Ok, I have resisted Twitter but now you're making me think I should give it a
shot to stay on top of more important info, alert things etc.
I thought the iPhone had a native twitter app, but I didn't find it.
What do you guys have good luck with?

Latest iOS on a 6S was Re: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Ann

Hi Andy,

I'll be upgrading to a SE2020 soon, I hope. But, I had an iPhone 6S, and
I was running the latest IOS on it. The version was either iOS 13.6 or
13.7 with no problems. I wonder why your 6S wouldn't update to the
latest version?

Hi my son informed me that Apple has a phone called the S E 2020 which is a

I am told that the S E 2020 also has a glass back as the 6 s is metal. Does
anyone have any comments on this? Would I be good to upgrade to the s e 2020?
I did notice that when I installed the Audible.com app that to purchase books

Yes the SE 2020 has wireless charging integrated into it. It’s the body of an
8, with the inwards of an 11.

I got a clear case to show off the red iPhone.
If you plan to use a wireless charger, make sure the case says it works with
wireless chargers. Any case that fits the 8 will also fit the new SE.

I've been happy with the decision to
upgrade.

Hi, I've found the realtor.com app has lost some accessibility. I cannot change
things like number of bedrooms or baths. Also changing the distance for a

Anyone having these issues?

Re: Changing Apple ID

2020-09-12 Thread Mike B
Here you go, read all the way through to get an idea of what you're supposed
to do:

From: Sieghard Weitzel

I assume you mean you want to use a different email to be your Apple Id? If
so then this is easily done:

1. Go to
https://AppleId.apple.com

2. Login with your current Apple Id email and password and, if you have
two-factor authentication enabled, allow the sign-in on your device and
enter the
security code

3. Use heading quick nav keys, letter H, to go to the beginning of the
information, then use button quick nav key, letter B, to find the first Edit
button
and activate it with the spacebar.

4. Now find the “Change my Apple Id” button, again you can use, letter B,
the button quick nav key, activate it and enter your new email

5. Look for the “Done” button

Regards,

Sieghard

From: Maria Reyes
There is a way if you want to do it on your iOS device. Go to settings, then
tap on your name. it should take you to your iCloud settings. Scroll down
to name, phone number, emails. Double tap. Flick until you hear the edit
button, then select it. You want to scroll past all of your emails and phone
numbers.
There should be an add button. It will bring up an alert asking if you want
to add an email address or a phone number, hit email. Type in the email
address
you want to add, and hit next. Once that’s done, you might have to hit the
edit button again. After that, find your old Apple ID email, swipe down
until
you hear delete. Once you double tap, it will bring a popup that asks you to
type in a new email address that you’ve just added. Type in the verification
code that you were sent.

Good day, list.

I haven’t posted in a while but I need a reminder about how to change my
Apple ID, as I haven’t had to mess with it in quite a while.

Do I need to sign out first before making the change? What I’m needing to do
is change the email address. What steps do I need to take on the phone to do
this process?

Please respond quickly so I can leave this list from the address I have been
using, and then sign it back up on the new email.

RE: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Richard Turner
I will echo what you have heard so far.
Apple mostly just calls it the iPhone SE, but to help distinguish it from the
first SE, people call it the SE 2020, SE second Generation, etc., I call it a
great phone.
Here is the link to the apple page with the details about it:
https://www.apple.com/iphone-se/

Subject: The S E 2020?

Greatly appreciate any
help here. Andy and Shubert

RE: Speech only on the iPhone

2020-09-12 Thread Richard Turner
You turn it on or off in the Accessibility settings under spoken content.
You engage it by doing a two finger swipe down from the top of the screen,i.e.
the status bar.

Also, Speak selected text can give speech that may help or not,, they can try

The one advantage to speak screen is that if you start it speaking with
something lengthy like a book in the Apple Books app, you can lock the screen
and it will continue reading until you stop it.

Re: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Daniel MacDonald
first off, your son is partly wrong. the new iPhone SE is not called
SE 2020. it's called SE second Genneration. it is not a modified
eight, as it's got the iinternals of the iPhone 11 in the body of the
iPhone eight. it has a haptic home button, which you'll have to get
used to. Touch ID is back with this phone, and is the only one I
currently recommend. if you have some sight, the bigger screen and
better camra of the iPhone 11 line might be attractive. theirs the yet
to be announced iPhone twelve, but since you are used to the iPhone
six with a physical home button it is not worth waiting, though others
will disagree with me. personally, I am totally blind, and the lack
of a home button is a huge hit to productivity. as long as your iPhone
six is meeting your needs, you do not need this phone. however, if you
find your iPhone six is slow to the point of things not loading as
they should, the iPhone SE Second Genneration is a good buy. my
feeling is, just because something is unsupported and new tech is
out, as long as something meets your needs, it doesn't matter what is
new. anyway, that's my advice, take it as you will.
Sincenerly,
Daniel Angus MacDonald

2020-09-12 Thread Holly

Andy:

I got a new SE 2020 about three months ago and I just love it.

It is the same size as the eight, and I still wanted a home button. It has
the newest processor.

It will be smaller than your 6S, but I don't need a large screen, as am
totally blind.

Good luck.

Changing Apple ID

2020-09-12 Thread William Outman
Good day, list.

I haven't posted in a while but I need a reminder about how to change my
Apple ID, as I haven't had to mess with it in quite a while.

Do I need to sign out first before making the change? What I'm needing to do
is change the email address. What steps do I need to take on the phone to do
this process?

Please respond quickly so I can leave this list from the address I have been
using, and then sign it back up on the new email.

RE: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Thank you Don, I appreciate it. I am the type to keep a phone for many years
as my 6s was purchased in 2016. The other feature I thought would be good is
to charge the phone on a flat charger. Best of all, it is available in 256 gig
as I keep my grandbabies videos recordings in my photos. Lots of audible books
and other stuff. I had to delete many things to gain memory with 128 gig which
only had 8 gig left. Again, I appreciate your comments. Andy and Shubert

Absolutely! The guts of the 2020 are essentially like the 11 but with the 2020
you still have the home button. For the price it's a great phone and I'm
pretty happy with mine. I think you'll also find that the new phone will do

RE: The S E 2020?

2020-09-12 Thread Don Moore
Absolutely! The guts of the 2020 are essentially like the 11 but with the 2020
you still have the home button. For the price it's a great phone and I'm
pretty happy with mine. I think you'll also find that the new phone will do
more.

Hi my son informed me that Apple has a phone called the S E 2020 which is a
modified 8. It has a model with 256gig. I now am using the 6 S with 128
gig. I am told that the S E 2020 also has a glass back as the 6 s is
metal. Does anyone have any comments on this? Would I be good to upgrade
to the s e 2020? I did notice that when I installed the Audible.com app
that to purchase books from the app, I would need IOS 13 or higher.
According to my settings, I am up to date with IOS 12plus. I don't want to
spend $549 unless I am getting a much better phone. Greatly appreciate any
help here. Andy and Shubert

I think it is a bit cumpersum but, if you open the message, there's a
button at the top that isthe number. if you double that that then find
that button again it usualy has choices like audio, facetime, info, if you
swipe left to the phone number button again and double tap it again you'll
find a details page Ithink you can use to add to contaxts, exhisting
contacts etc. I hope I'm right.

I have a contact who has recently changed her phone number. I have a text
message that she sent from her new phone number, and I would like to get
that phone number into her contact so that I have the right number. I haven’t
found a way to do that in the Messages app. I’ve looked for actions, but
nothing helps. Double tap and hold brought up a context menu that had
nothing useful in it. So, there must be away, and it’s probably something
easy that I’m overlooking.

RE: Speech only on the iPhone

2020-09-12 Thread Richard Turner
I don't know if Siri is quite as verbal as when VoiceOVer is on, but make sure
to set Siri to always under its feedback setting.
Speak Screen will read the screen without VoiceOver being on if you do the two
finger swipe down from the top of the screen.
Also, Speak selected text can give speech that may help or not,, they can try
it and see.
The one advantage to speak screen is that if you start it speaking with
something lengthy like a book in the Apple Books app, you can lock the screen
and it will continue reading until you stop it.

Re: microphone input to bluetooth speaker

2020-09-12 Thread Richard Turner
I found one called bluetooth loud
sspeaker.
It works with
VoiceOver.
After connecting to your bluetooth speaker, in the app, you will want to select
play on.
Then, the mic will go over the
speaker.
It has a $1.99 inapp purchase to what it says is unlock, which I think may be
to remove adst. It works at least in my quick test without that, but if it does
get rid of the ads, it will clean up the screen quite a
bit.
Here is the
link.

Re: Writing in Spanish on the iPhone

2020-09-12 Thread Kimberly
Christine,

I’m taking spanish on duolingo as well. What I did was install the spanish
keyboard on the iPhone. Now whenever spanish is required for entry, the phone
shows the spanish keyboard rather than the english one. If you are entering on
the onscreen keyboard, I believe you still have to use the hold and slide
method that others have described. However, if you are using a bluetooth
keyboard. There are dedicated keys for entering accents and the n with tilda.

The n tilde is the key to the right of the semicolon and the acute accent is
the next key to the right of that one.

microphone input to bluetooth speaker

2020-09-12 Thread Dan

Do any of you know of an app that will open the mic on an
Iphone and then let you hear it on either earphones or
preferably a bluetooth speaker?  I am looking to use it as a
baby monitor for our very young grandson.  I have an app that is
a baby monitor but it has stopped working and I can't figure out
why.  It also requires the internet but I realized if I could
find something like this then the internet wouldn't be needed.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Because this is the world we now live in, for those who are in San Bernardino
County her in Southern California, this site where you can register to receive
emergency alerts via phone, text or email may also be useful
http://www.sbcounty.gov/SBCFire/TENS/TENSContact.aspx?utm_content=buffer776be_medium=social_source=twitter_campaign=buffer
I'd have to imagine that other counties have similar set ups.
Also, I find that of the social media platforms, Twitter's best with giving
updates inn real time for this sort of stuff. Some accounts I follow are: CA
Fire Scanner (@CAFireScanner), Daniel Swain (@Weather_West), San Bernardino
National Forest (@SanBernardinoNF), SB County Fire (@SBCOUNTYFIRE).
There are others out there of course, but these are the ones that are more
focused on my area/state. I also follow my local city and police/sheriff
accounts. I bailed out on Facebook last year because as it was getting too
toxic for my taste and NextDoor is more gossipy and prone to rumors and doesn't
really give any information that's faster or more relevant than the accounts I
already follow for this sort of stuff. I don’t' really do police scanners so
can't comment on that.
Stay safe everyone.

Thanks everyone! I so appreciate all the helpful info.
I ended up calling AIRA and getting them to help me get signed up on the public
alerts website.
There was also a spot to register as a blind person. I have resisted that in
the passed but went a head and did it tonight.
It sounds like my question was helpful for several other people.
I don't read all of the emails on this list, but I read quite a few of them.
I don't say much too often but every time I have there is always useful help
and I greatly appreciate that.
To Richard Turner, you are a very good JAWS user, lol, a trainer, so if even
you found both the KXL and Red Cross sites impossible, I know it wasn't just
lack of skill on my part. Yay!

I found the number for the Red Cross and plan to call and ask about shelters.
Yes we are not on any alerts, but by the time we would be, it would be too late
to figure something out.
Planning helps me not feel quite as anxious.
Also the alert system is set up with sighted folks with cars so for those of us
who don't have car access it would be too late if we waited to leave at the
level 3 alert.
That one is leave right now.
The fire probably won't get this far into town, but with the way fires are
these days, how crazy fast and crazy huge, you never know.
Santa Rosa California mostly burned a couple of years ago the population there
is 175 thousand in the city proper and a lot more in the outlying areas. It has
burned to the ground several little towns here in Oregon and Washington, well
California for that matter.

Again, thanks for all the help guys!

RE: Writing in Spanish on the iPhone

2020-09-12 Thread CJ & AA MAY
I am learning German via the Duo Lingo app and need to use umlauts. I don't
know anything about Spanish but assume the same method applies.
So, If I want an a umlaut, I tap the letter a and keep my finger there, first
it offers some words but then it offers symbols and I slide my finger to the
right until I hear the a umlaut but there are other offerings so maybe Spanish
may be one of them.
In German I have a umlaut, a double s sign which is called something like
shafess s, an o and a u umlaut, and this method works for all of them, except
with the o and u umlauts I have to slide my finger to the left rather than the
right.
Hope this works for you.
Initially it is a bit of a faff, but you soon get used to it.

I'm trying to watch prime video on my iphone and windows computer.
On the iphone, how can I find tv shows with AD, as well in the computer?
