When your braille display, (Mantis Q40), limits you on .BRF file size. I hear
that will be rectified. There are no limits on the Orbit Readers.

Hi all, I know very little about Bookshare. Could you let me know your
 experience with it?

How do you read books on your iOs or Braille Display?
 Which formats do you use?

It looks like the service is $50 a year. Do we keep the books we
 download?

 Thank you,

Hi all,

A friend’s iPhone SE 2020 makes an obnoxious swooshing sound for no apparent
reason. My phone also did that when it was new but Apple tech support told me
how to turn that noise off. That was 18 months back and I do not remember how
to turn it off. I bet some one here knows.

And, I would like to know about wifi calling which is located in the phone
menu. I’m trying to figure out if I need that turned on or off.

I use Tracfone and my minutes are being used even when I am at home near my
wifi. I thought that phone calls were not used when at home near wifi. Can
some one please explain?

Thanks for all of the help.

RE: 2 iPhone questions please

2021-08-12 Thread Richard Turner
James,
What internet provider do you use?

If Xfinity, and you don't use a lot of data, they have some great plans. The
cost of the minutes comes with the internet package, so all you pay for is data.
If they still offer it, we are on the 1 GB plan, since neither my wife or I use
much data. We are usually on Wi-Fi for web stuff and streaming.
It's around $12 per month plus taxes so around $16.
You can go up to unlimited data I think for $45ish.
I don't know if they allow shared plans outside of the 1 GB plan though.

Consumer Cellular too I think has good plans. And if you put them, Verizon
tMobile, and the rest have good deals. Check if any of them have a
disability/accessibility department and start there.

HTH,

Have your friend turn off reachability. I don't recall under which setting it
is, but if they use the search box at the top of the settings screen they can
find it.

You may have to contact your carrier about Wi-Fi calling. But the theory is
that it helps when a cell signal is weak to give a better connection, I think.
I don't think it gets you around using minutes if you are actually on a phone
call.
Minutes should only be used during calls.
Data, on the other hand, is used up while on a cellular (non-wi-fi) connection
doing things like surfing the net, email, etc.

If it is your data being eaten, see if you can connect via Wi-Fi and turn off
cellular data so you only use data when on Wi-Fi. That will work until you are
not on a Wi-Fi network.

But, check with your carrier about the wi-fi calling bit.

I don't know if it is another paid app.
Seeing AI is free, so worth checking out to see what it is like.

Now, whether you should care about it, I cannot say.

2 iPhone questions please

2021-08-12 Thread bentleyj1952
Hi all,

A friend's iPhone SE 2020 makes an obnoxious swooshing sound for no apparent
reason. My phone also did that when it was new but Apple tech support told
me how to turn that noise off. That was 18 months back and I do not
remember how to turn it off. I bet some one here knows.

And, I would like to know about wifi calling which is located in the phone
menu. I'm trying to figure out if I need that turned on or off.

I use Tracfone and my minutes are being used even when I am at home near my
wifi. I thought that phone calls were not used when at home near wifi. Can
some one please explain?

Thanks for all of the help.

RE: LIDAR, was RE: A chip question

2021-08-12 Thread Richard Turner
I think supersense has a whole other app called SuperLidar which I have not
looked into since I don't have a phone with LIDAR yet.
I don't know if it is another paid app.
Seeing AI is free, so worth checking out to see what it is like.

  Hi,

if you turn off backups on that phone, it won't back up either. I think it
will also ask if you want to delete the existing backup.

You can also remove backups from iCloud at any time by choosing the button
with your name at the top of Settings, then iCloud, then Manage Storage.
Choose the Backups button. Each device that is being backed up is listed
along with how much space it takes up. Double-tap the one you want to
delete. There's a delete Backup button on that page that will delete the
backup and stop backing up to that device.

You can go into the settings at the top of settings and double tap

Then, swipe over to iCloud and double tap.
Now, swipe over to iCloud backup and toggle it off.

If it asks what you want to do with the backed up info, if it offers

Well, here is one for you. I have gotten a new phone and am still

that on to the new phone. Yesterday my husband noticed that the battery
level was low, so he plugged it in. Early this morning I wandered
downstairs and discovered that it was turned on and plugged in. Of course
it had tried to back up and unload all of its stuff to iCloud. Now there is
a message saying that there is not enough space in my iCloud account to back
up everything on this phone and I should go to settings to manage my
account. First of all, I didn't even want this phone to back up to iCloud
because of not knowing if I am going to keep it. Second, how do I manage
this or get that phones stuff off my iCloud account. Thirdly, until I
decide whether or not I'm keeping this phone, it shall be powered off before
charging. Can anyone solve my problem? Thanks for any help.

I would say, that if you update to 14.7.1, check your settings to make sure
they are as you have them set.

I had to:

1. Get my phone back on Internet.
2. Turn up volume on phone speaker, as it had been turned down, dfown, down.
3. Check Do Not Disturb; mine had been put on a schedule of being on from 10 to
7.

Those are the surprises I have encountered so far.

Subject: Re: Volume Control Question

Sherry:

Here you go. Several ways to change Siri volume.

Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, is an essential tool. Sometimes, though, its
voice can be jarringly loud or too quiet to easily hear. Luckily, it’s easy to
change Siri’s volume on an iPhone or iPad.

Use Voice Commands to Adjust Siri’s Volume

Your voice is probably the easiest way to control Siri’s volume. To adjust its
volume this way, press and hold the Side or Home button (or say, “Hey Siri,”
 ) to
launch it. Then say something like, “Change your volume to 75 percent.”

This sets Siri’s (and the media playback) volume to 75 percent of the maximum
setting. You can specify any value from 1 to 100 percent.

You can also just say, “Speak louder,” or “Speak softer,” to change Siri’s
volume.

Adjust Siri’s Volume with the Volume Buttons

You can also change Siri’s volume by pressing the volume buttons on the side of
your device. Some confusion can arise when using these buttons, though

. This is because they sometimes control the ringer or media playback volume.

To make sure you’re controlling the right setting, ask Siri a question, and
then press the Volume Up or Down button to see if it responds.

RELATED: How to Control Both Ringer and System Volume with the iPhone's Volume
Buttons

Change Siri’s Volume in Control Center

If you’d prefer to use the touch screen to change Siri’s volume, you can also
adjust it in Control Center

. Launch Control Center in one of the following ways:

* iPhone X or newer/iPad running iOS 12 or later: Swipe down from the
top right of the screen.

* iPhone 8 or earlier/iPad running iOS 11 or earlier: Swipe up from the
bottom of the screen. (Control Center first appeared in iOS 7).

Tap the Volume slider to raise or lower Siri’s volume until you’ve got it where
you want it.

they got into that area accidentally, they could have changed it so it was out
of balance.

There are so many hundreds of headphones options no one on this list can tell
you what to buy.

You need to decide if you want wireless, wired, or what and whether you want
in-ear or over the ear, and how much you want to spend as you can spend
anywhere from probably $10 to $550.

Hi all, first let me ask what are the things called that goes between your
earphones and the iPhone? Can I get that thing on amazon? I hope that made
sense. Also, I know someone who has a pair of airpods and the volume on the
left ear for some odd reason went way low. We've tried unpairing and pairing
them again but it didn't work. So any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, if anyone could let me know what to buy instead of airpods. Thanks.

RE: Volume Control Question

To adjust its
volume this way, press and hold the Side or Home button (or
 say,
“Hey Siri,”) to launch it. Then say something like, “Change your volume to 75
percent.”

Some

confusion can arise when using these buttons, though. This is because they
sometimes control the ringer or media playback volume.

To make sure you’re controlling the right setting, ask Siri a question, and
then press the Volume Up or Down button to see if it responds.

RELATED:

How to Control Both Ringer and System Volume with the iPhone's Volume Buttons

Change Siri’s Volume in Control Center

If you’d prefer to use the touch screen to change Siri’s volume, you can also
adjust it in

Control Center.

RE: A chip question

2021-08-12 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I have a pair of gaming headphones that I connect to my iPhone with a lightning
adaptor. I lost that adaptor, and decided to order one that had a 3.5 mm jack
on it, and a lightning jack to hook a cord so I could charge it and use the
headphones at the same time. I connected the gaming headphones to the 3.5 mm
jack to see how well it would work. I activated Siri on my phone, and spoke
into my gaming mic. To my surprise, Siri came out of the speakers on my phone.
I then tried to make a call on my iPhone, and instead of it coming through my
headphones, it was routed to the ear speaker, which meant I couldn’t hear it. I
can’t remember the brand of adaptor I got, but at least this one didn’t route
phone audio through it, and the gaming mic didn’t work at all. I called up
Apple and ordered that little lightning plug that I had, and all works as
expected. I do have an adaptor with two female lightning plugs on it, so I can
use my headphones and charge my phone at the same time.

Just giving a heads up.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

RE: When apps go on sale

2021-08-12 Thread Richard Turner
HI,
I believe that was an app, that maybe went away? I'm not sure.

At this point, I'd look for a sale in the next month as we get closer to the
fall school openings, or toward Christmas/New Year's.

He sends an announcement out on twitter and to his users and often to a
designated mailing list for Voice Dream users.
I usually forward that to this list, and others do as well.

So, you should hear about any sales when they happen.

RE: Wondering if I should update my iPhone

2021-08-12 Thread Carolyn
I would say, that if you update to 14.7.1, check your settings to make sure
they are as you have them set.

I had to:

1. Get my phone back on Internet.
2. Turn up volume on phone speaker, as it had been turned down, dfown, down.
3. Check Do Not Disturb; mine had been put on a schedule of being on from 10 to
7.

Those are the surprises I have encountered so far.

Re: Volume Control Question

2021-08-12 Thread Holly

To adjust its
volume this way, press and hold the Side or Home button (or say, “Hey Siri,”)
to launch it.

Some confusion can arise when using these buttons, though. This is
because they sometimes control the ringer or media playback volume.

To make sure you’re controlling the right setting, ask Siri a question, and
then press the Volume Up or Down button to see if it responds.

RELATED: How to Control Both Ringer and System Volume with the iPhone's Volume
Buttons

Change Siri’s Volume in Control Center
If you’d prefer to use the touch screen to change Siri’s volume, you can also
adjust it in Control Center. Launch Control Center in one of the following ways:

a.. iPhone X or newer/iPad running iOS 12 or later: Swipe down from the top
right of the screen.
b.. iPhone 8 or earlier/iPad running iOS 11 or earlier: Swipe up from the
bottom of the screen. (Control Center first appeared in iOS 7).

Tap the Volume slider to raise or lower Siri’s volume until you’ve got it where
you want it.

Re: iCloud space

2021-08-12 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

if you turn off backups on that phone, it won't back up either. I think it will
also ask if you want to delete the existing backup.

You can also remove backups from iCloud at any time by choosing the button with
your name at the top of Settings, then iCloud, then Manage Storage. Choose the
Backups button. Each device that is being backed up is listed along with how
much space it takes up. Double-tap the one you want to delete. There's a delete
Backup button on that page that will delete the backup and stop backing up to
that device.

Best,
Anna

2021-08-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
In addition to Anna's information below, a three finger swipe left or right
will let you change between contracted and uncontracted braille. This comes in
handy sometimes because there are times you don't want to use contracted

Hi Joshua,

There are two orientations for Braille Screen Input: Tabletop and Screen Away
mode. In tabletop mode, the keys are arranged like a Perkins brailler. In
Screen Away mode, you hold the phone between your palms with the screen facing
away from you. When you wrap your hands around the phone so you can touch the
screen, your left hand does dots 1, 2, and 3 in a column with 1 on the top, and
your right hand does dots 4, 5, and 6 in the same orientation. I like this mode
because my hands are more likely to stay in the same place than when I use
Tabletop mode, but I would recommend trying them both to see which you prefer.

You can set the default grade of braille from the
Settings/Accessibility/VoiceOver/Braille screen using the Onscreen Braille
Input setting.

When you are typing, flick right with one finger for Space and with two fingers
for Return. Flick left with one finger to delete a character and with two to
delete a word. The iPhone user guide includes all the commands, so check that
out as well. I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

How should I set up braille screen input please

2021-08-12 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Hello to all you fine iPhone people out there. How should I set up
braille screen input on my iPhone 8? I did get a little help from
apple accessibility. I have gotten braille screen input in my router.
I tried it out, and how do I set it to contracted input. I also heard
something about landscape mode, or tabletop mode. What is that all
about. I have my iPhone orientation locked if that makes any
difference. I hope someone can help. If I can get the iPhone to
recognize my fingers consistantly, this will be very cool.

Don’t even think about it. An IPHone that’s not updated to the latest, is an
insecure and vulnerable device. Also I’m running iOS14.7.1 and without any

First, plug it in and then turn it off immediately. Once you plug a phone in
that is powered off, it powers up... Annoying yes.

You can go into the settings at the top of settings and double tap on your name.

Then, swipe over to iCloud and double tap.
Now, swipe over to iCloud backup and toggle it off.

If it asks what you want to do with the backed up info, if it offers a chance
to just leave it on the phone, do that.
I'm not sure exactly how to get stuff off your iCloud that has backed up
already.

Someone here does I'm sure, or apple accessibility.

RE: Another Emergency Alerts Question

2021-08-12 Thread Star Gazer
I’m wondering this too, my husband and my kid
each got a tornado alert, I didn’t, all of us were together and all our phones
were together. Kind of disconcerting..

Subject: Another Emergency Alerts Question

I have amber alerts turned off, emergency and public safety alerts are on. This
has been the case since getting my IPhone 5 in 2012. But the only
weather-related alert I have ever received on any of my phones is the flash
flood warning. No severe thunder storm or tornado warnings ever, and there have
been both of these warnings issued for my specific area since 2012. I wonder
why none of these warnings? Thanks for any opinions.

Well, when you open the app, and give it permissions like other apps
do, then it asks you to input your 10-digit phone number, followed by
an email and create a password, however, I'm having difficulty with
regards to inputting my phone number, all I hear is the sound one
here's when voiceover has reached the end of a screen and nothing is
in the text field though I've clearly double-tapped to make sure I was in

Voice Over typing feedback in Safari based survey

2021-08-12 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
recently I tried to complete an online survey, about accessibility would you
believe, and came across a problem when trying to respond a text entry box. I
got the usual text edit prompt but it was followed by something like ‘object
replacement’. When I attempt to type there is no longer any letter or word
feedback and I have no idea if it is accepting my typing.

I tried various ways of interacting further and tried it with quicknave both on
or off.

Is this a bug or is there a workaround?

Thanks as always
Ian

Hi Kay

All you have to do now is put the app on your phone and sign up using your
mobile number.

Once you’ve done that, the app will prompt you on what to do next. There is
also a Mac and Windows app called ClubDeck if you do not wish to continue using
