RE: A Question About Apple Fitness Plus for VoiceOver Users

2021-09-17 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Listening to this thread

I can't see apple putting Audio Discription in to their fitness videos

Although to us it wouldn't be difficult,
It would be to an audio description narrator
I think you'll find the videos are created by the instructors on contracts to
apple
And then streamed or played within the fitness app.
You'd have to find a narrator that had the knowledge to speak the fitness speak
at the speed each of the exercises was being carried out.

And also be able to change at the right time / speed of the instructors in the
exercises.

Arnold,
Your response is exactly why I think if they want to make this accessible,
they’re going to have to find somebody or more than one person who can actually
describe these things. At one point, there was a small entrepreneur company
called wind alive. They had exercises and they had descriptions done by
somebody who did a good job describing them so that a blind person would know
what the heck was going on. Once you mastered that, you could do the exercises
along with the workout stuff. I don’t know that Apple is going to be willing to
do that. It’s not OK to suppose that a blind person is going to have the
wherewithal to learn how to do these exercises without such description or in
person assistance, which most of us have no access to. It’s too darn expensive.
Hence my desire to have alternative bundles. But I guess that’s another topic.
There’s no way I’m subscribing to apple fitness without good descriptions.

will have to put in a whole lot of work. Line

RE: adapter question

2021-09-17 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Kay,

The apple earpods that you use to get with your iPhones
Have a built in microphone and don’t need a microphone 3.5mm jack in those
adapters.

If you had an old pair of the wired earpods around you could use those in one
of the adapters to get what you require.

Yes, I probably should have been more clear. I would like to use the mic when
I am using headphones and if I am using headphones they would be taking up the
lightning plug, thus I would need one on the adapter with the headphone jack.
Kind of like what you might use if you were charging the phone wile using the
headphone jack. I hope this makes more sense. By the way, thanks much for the
link. I'll have a look at it right away.

Hi Kay,
Doesn't the Zoom mic fit in the Mini Lightning port?
Anyway here is the link to the adapter that will let you use the standard 3.5

RE: adapter question

2021-09-17 Thread Alan Lemly
Kay,

So now that we have all the details, it sounds like you want an adapter with
two lightning ports into which you can plug both a lightning microphone and a
lightning headset. The Belkin Rockstar is an adapter with two lightning female
ports with about a 2 inch cable and a male lightning connector. I know this
cable will allow you to both charge with one of the ports and do something else
with the other port but I’m not sure both the microphone and headset would work
when plugged into it. Since the Rockstar costs about $40, you should make sure
what you intend to do will work.

Re: A Question About Apple Fitness Plus for VoiceOver Users

2021-09-17 Thread Mary Otten
It certainly is possible to subscribe to news separately. What I am suggesting
is that since they offer the big bundle at a discount, but the assumption is
that if you subscribe you can actually use all those things, which we can’t,
and they offer a smaller bundle which also has stuff that we can’t use, like
arcade, they should offer more flexible bundles. I suspect this would be useful
for people not just us. How many people use arcade or want it? I just think
they need to be more flexible in the bundling process. They’re offering
discounts, but only if you’re willing to buy the big deal, or if you like
what’s offered in the cheaper bundle. Of course it is their choice what they
offer. But if they offered a bundle that had stuff that is actually all usable
by us, I would get it. Music, TV, and News. Never mind fitness and never mind
arcade. But they don’t offer that. Arcade is in everything, and it’s totally
inaccessible, so it’s a waste.

Re: adapter question

2021-09-17 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Kay,
Doesn't the Zoom mic fit in the Mini Lightning port?
Anyway here is the link to the adapter that will let you use the standard 3.5
MM headphone plugto the lightning port on the Mini.

Re: A Question About Apple Fitness Plus for VoiceOver Users

2021-09-17 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I think it could work, but the blind user would have to be willing to learn the
exercise nomenclature such as what is a side lateral with a weight, what is a
lunge, and all the other technical names of the exercises being performed.
Also, the blind user would have to learn how to do this stuff on their own some
way. The audio describer wouldn't have time to describe what all these
exercises are and how to do them, there simply wouldn't be time. A way sighted
people learn is to watch somebody do something and then try to imitate it. The
blind can't do that, they either have to be told in detail how to do it, or
have somebody show them hands on. It is my opinion that this specialized
learning is not the responsibility of the describer, we would need to learn it
on our own some way. Some of the following names I am making up, there may not
be such exercises. The describer could say side stradle hop while that is
happening, then lunge, then backward stretch hop while that is happening, etc.
Many years ago, I took, as it were, an adapted aerobics class and this is the
way it was done.

This is an interesting area of discussion. I honestly cannot imagine how you
would do a description track with a work out track. I get how the exercises
could be described by somebody who could be good at that, really getting down
into the exact positions of everything, and describing it in a way that someone
who has never seen could grasp and do. I could see it as a separate track, but
trying to do that at the same time as you have a track with a trainer or coach
plus music, and trying to understand all that in real time? I don’t know. It
would be great of course. But I’m thinking that they might need a separate
descriptive track that a blind person would have to listen to separately to get
the hang of things. I know somebody who has done rowing for instance. And she
said that with the Apple Fitness+ rowing app, she would not have known what to
do if she had an already experienced rowing in real life on a rowing team. In
the meantime, I sure do wish that Apple would offer more flexibility in their
bundles. In order to get Apple news plus for instance, you have to buy the big
$30 bundle, which includes the arcade and fitness plus, which are useless if
you are a voiceover user. TV plus and Apple News+ are both accessible. So how
about an accessibility bundle that includes the things that we could actually
use at a decent price? I have actually suggested that to Apple accessibility,
hoping that they pass it along. Why should I have to buy stuff I can’t use?
For that matter, if one is profoundly deaf and likes the Apple stuff, why
should they have to pay for music if they want all the other stuff, seeing as
how music is something that a profoundly deaf person is not going to benefit
from. If Apple wants to really take the next step in showing they mean what
they say, they should have more bundles tailored with Accessibility in mind.

Re: What is Vertical Navigation

2021-09-17 Thread Mike B.
Also, if you're in an app and you go over to the right edge of the home
screen, let's say in the App store, doing an update, you will find Vertical
Navigation and Voiceover will report, vertical navigation, 9 pages. Now
just flick down with 1 finger 1 flick at a time to navigate the page
structure mor quickly. This comes in very handy in apps like, Settings,
where you can swipe until the cows come home to find the app you're looking
for, but if you use vertical navigation you get to know how many flicks it
takes to get you close to apps you go to often.

Stay safe & take care. Mike.

If you are on the first row of your home screen, on the second icon. If you
turn the rotor to vertical navigation and flick down, you will land on the
second icon in each row. You are going straight down the column.

It works anywhere you have columns.

RE: A Question About Apple Fitness Plus for VoiceOver Users

2021-09-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Last time I checked I was still able to subscribe to Apple News separately so
unless this was a recent change it should still be possible. I actually only
recently subscribed to their large $30 something Canadian bundle because with
Apple News, Apple Music Family and Apple TV it was already pretty much the
price of the big bundle and my wife and I both had the 50 Gb storage as well
which is only $1.29 or something here in Canada, but I now also added my Mom to
the family group and she also had this so we are saving another $4 or so.

RE: Instacart 7.93.0 issues Don't Update.

2021-09-17 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Arnold and all,
I just encountered the change in rating and I will report the issue to them as
well. I took a chance and figured out the sequence in which the stars were in
but I agree it isn't as easy as the picker. Further when requesting a refund
the elements for choosing account credit or credit to original method of
payment don't report their change in status when you select one so you have to
hope you've gotten it right. Please join me in politely reporting these things
to them. It's been my experience that once reported things are addressed
quickly. Here's hoping that continues. During my delivery today items that
needed replacing still did report properly though I can't verify which version
of the app is installed I haven't found that just yet.
Take good care.
Robin

Hopefully it is just me, but I don't think so. After updating, I could not read
what she needed to replace, it just said elipsis, I got that figured out
another way. But when I tried to rate my order, it just said star rather than
telling me how many stars it was. Finally, when I found a text field to send

Hey Mark Taylor, it’s very interesting you bring up this topic because I just
tried it out not too long ago in fact I think I tried it out on Monday and I
quickly gave up because there weren’t any audio descriptions during the video
as to how to do certain things that’s why I chose to do the walking workouts
since all I had to do was walk even though I really wanted to do the body core
workouts those were not really described unfortunately there’s some really good
cardio ones but again you run the risk of them not being described as far as
the movements go. The walking ones are easier for me since all I have to do is
walk or run for a certain amount of minutes. Sorry I can’t be very helpful. I
only just recently started using Apple fitness plus whatever it’s called since
I already have an Apple one subscription that has four services in one.

Instacart 7.93.0 issues Don't Update.

2021-09-17 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Hopefully it is just me, but I don't think so. After updating, I could not read
what she needed to replace, it just said elipsis, I got that figured out
another way. But when I tried to rate my order, it just said star rather than
telling me how many stars it was. Finally, when I found a text field to send
them a message about it, not only would braille screen input not work in it,
when I wanted to correct something, I could not edit it. I do hope they get my
message and fix this stuff. It is still useable, but not like before.

Three finger triple tap. Be sure not to do a three finger double tap or you

Good luck.

Hunter Sprinkler Timer Accessibility

2021-09-17 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
We are looking into getting a new timer for our sprinkler system. The company
who is doing some work on our sprinklers is recommending the Hydrawise system
from Hunter. Can anyone comment on its accessibility?

If anyone has other recommendations, that would also be appreciated. I believe
I recall Rachio previously being mentioned as being fairly accessible.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

The sling tv app accessability:

2021-09-17 Thread Don Breda
I am considering the purchase of an air TV 2 unit for streaming the over
the air local channels.

This requires the use of the sling tv app.

I haven't looked at that app in a few years.

Are there accessibility issues with it?

How usable is it really?

In addition to the guide, is the DVR portion accessible?

Thanks in advance.

Very interesting about the iPhone 13! but for me, no IPhone upgrades! maybe
until about 3 years or so; I'd like to give this SE 2nd generation (I got it
June of last year), all its use! Remember that it's the body of an 8, with the
innards of an 11.
