Considering the new Apple Watch

2021-10-11 Thread Renee Patete
Hi readers,
I am a new member here, so I hope this email goes to the right place.
The Apple Watch series 7 arrives in my country this week, and I am considering
getting one to replace my now broken series 4. However, I have heard somewhere
that the screen reader may no longer be very good on the new watches. Can
anyone who has had experience with the new one please let me know whether it is
still as accessible as it used to be? I have no remaining vision, so need a
completely reliable screen reader.
Thank you in advance,
Renee

Much easier to touch the status bar and drag your finger down until you
feel the first haptic feedback and then let go, drag it down a bit more to
the second time it vibrates and you have notification centre.

I do not use the Wallet; but for those who do; to help others duplicate the
issue, it would help if you said which phone you are using.
It would appear some issues in iOS 15 happen on some phones/iPads but not on
others running iOS 15...

You normally don't see bugs being introduced in versions like this.
These versions fix things and close security gaps.

Speaking of AirPods Pro, I hear that Apple might be coming out with a second
version and if that’s the case I will wait until it’s released to the public as

conked out on me the batteries stopped working internally for some reason.

They update while connected to your phone at some point on their own. Every now

you get to the firmware number.

It should end in 400.

RE: New hand gestures on Apple watch

2021-10-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I can't understand this message, so let me just provide some more information.

It seems that I need to toggle on hand gestures in the VoiceOver settings on my
Apple Watch. You might need to do this through the Watch app on your iPhone.
That might have been what got it working for me. Note I have an Apple Watch SE.
You also need to be running WatchOS 8 and IOS 15.

Now after you wake up your Apple Watch, say by pressing the crown, you can
enable hand gestures with a double clench. This means make a fist twice quickly
with the same hand your watch is on. Once it's enabled you can move from item
to item with the pinch and double pinch gestures. This is the same as swiping
on the face of your watch, but you're not touching your watch and your using
the fingers on the same hand your watch is on. So for example, if I pinch my
pointer and thumb together, I'll hear Mindfulness and with another pinch I'll
hear Workout and then the time. These are the objects on my watch face. A
double pinch will move me back an item, so say from the time to Workout and
then to Mindfulness. To activate the item I just heard VoiceOver announce, I
just need to do a clench, that means make a fist with the hand my watch is on.
This way I can work with my watch without having to touch the screen.

I hope that helps explains things a bit.

I am running Watch OS 8. Under Settings -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Hand
Gestures, I have them toggled on. Under Settings -> Accessibility -> Assistive
Touch (which is in the Motor section) the option to toggle this on is greyed
out.

I'm not sure what I just did, but they just started working with the above
settings. Using the defaults, when the watch face is active, I can enable hand
gestures with a double clench. A clench is making a fist, so if I do this twice
then hand gestures are enabled. To move from item to the next item, I can
perform a pinch gesture by just touching my pointer finger to my thumb. A
double pinch moves backwards. A clench performs a double tap on whatever has
focus and the double clench simulates a press of the crown. I'm still playing
with it, and I haven't determined how useful they are yet, but I'm intrigued.

I believe that in order to use the new gestures, you have to enable Assistive
Touch in WatchOS 8. If you have not updated your watch to version 8 of the
operating system, then these new gestures will not work.

You normally don't see bugs being introduced in versions like this.

These versions fix things and close security gaps.

It would appear some issues in iOS 15 happen on some phones/iPads but not on

Subject: RE: New hand gestures on Apple watch

I believe that in order to use the new gestures, you have to enable Assistive
Touch in WatchOS 8. If you have not updated your watch to version 8 of the
operating system, then these new gestures will not work.

RE: New hand gestures on Apple watch

2021-10-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I am running Watch OS 8. Under Settings -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Hand
Gestures, I have them toggled on. Under Settings -> Accessibility -> Assistive
Touch (which is in the
Motor section) the option to toggle this on is greyed out.

RE: IOS 15.0.2 is out

2021-10-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It should be said that for you and others the Wallet crashing bug is still
there, I have never experienced this since the initial release of iOS 15.
Do you have Reduced Motion turned On or Off? I know this fixes the app switcher
issue where Voiceover sometimes doesn't say the name of the app when you flick
left and I wonder if it could also have an effect on Wallet.
Of course if quite a lot of people experience this it is a bug of some sort,
but I wonder if a particular Setting is responsible.

You normally don't see bugs being introduced in versions like this.
These versions fix things and close security gaps.

Yes, the wallet crashing bug is still there, but you can get by it by going
into settings and then wallet and Apple Pay and you can do the same things you
normally do with Wallet.

No, no problem with deleting characters, just replacing entire words or names
of apps with the word comma.

If you absolutely need to reset all settings, you can, but I discovered that
was like killing a fly with a sledge hammer.

If you are having the issue of VoiceOver saying Comma before each character
you delete, go to settings, Accessibility, Voiceover, Verbosity, and set
“deleting text’ to do nothing.

It will still speak the character you delete but it won’t add the word comma.

If you are determined to have to fix tons of settings with many many apps, go
to settings, general, Transfer or Reset iPhone, double tap, and go down to
Reset, double tap and then pick your poison.

Just don’t do Erase all content unless you really want to wipe out your
phone …

I've seen others mention this problem since updating to IOS 15. They report
that resetting all settings resolves the problem. Note: Resetting all settings
just resets what is in the settings app not the entire phone. If you choose to
try this, good luck. Hope the solution works for you.

  Hi,

I apologize if this has all ready been asked, but since my update,
certain apps and other whole words are completely replaced by a comma or at
least the word comma. There is no particular pattern, it just does it. This
happens when arrowing down apps in settings, on the home screen and it's always
the same app, but no reason for doing it. Any ideas how to stop this?

  Thanks.

Yes Alan,
You just make sure and check only sync selected songs/music, whatever it says
and then you can select that which you want to have sync.

Hi Richard,

So you were able to use iTunes to sync your music to your 13 Pro but ended up
with it twice because it also came over with the phone to phone transfer? My
only concern is that I have a lot more music in iTunes than I want on my iPhone
and use selected playlists to control the transfer. I hope this option is still
available in iTunes and I'll report back what I discover.

Hi Alan,

My issue was that all my music transferred with the phone-to-phone transfer,
then when I synced my phone a few days later, the computer put all my music on
the phone for a second time, so I had two copies of everything.

I hope to have time to call them today.

Hi List,

I fully intended to write up and post an iPhone 13 setup document as I did when
setting up my iPhone SE 2020 in late April of last year. However, after my
dreadful setup experience with my 13 Mini, I became so frustrated with just
getting it done that I stopped taking notes. As a cautionary note to those
setting up new devices, I strongly suggest that you don't have a later version
of iOS running on your older device than the version of iOS running on the
newer device that is being set up with an iPhone to iPhone transfer. I'm
convinced that having iOS 15.01 on my SE 2020 and iOS 15 on my 13 Mini was the
main factor that caused my setup to fail. After about four failed setup
attempts and a couple of calls to Apple Support, I ended up setting up the new
iPhone as a new device with no iPhone transfer or restoration of any backup. I
then upgraded that new phone containing none of my settings or data to iOS
15.01 when prompted. I then connected it to my Windows 10 computer and iTunes
and restored the encrypted backup I had made to the 13 Mini. Note that when I
tried restoring my encrypted backup while the 13 Mini was still on iOS 15,
iTunes returned an error message saying it couldn't restore a backup of a later
version of iOS to a device running an earlier version. So, I've learned a hard
lesson and hope that my sharing this will help others to avoid something
similar.

Now, the only thing I have to figure out is how to get my iTunes music
playlists that I had previously synced to past iPhones to my 13 Mini. Since I
didn't do a phone to phone transfer, my music didn't move over. I would have
thought that an iTunes encrypted backup would have included music but I seem to
recall now that Richard might have mentioned this in another post. I'm a bit
concerned because I don't think syncing music playlists with iTunes still works
as it once did. I'm not sure I feel up to resetting the 13 Mini back to factory
in order to attempt another phone to phone transfer but if this is the only
way to get my music moved over, I'll consider it.

But, this seems to be a bug.

Re: My travails of setting up a new iPhone 13 Mini

2021-10-11 Thread Alan Lemly

Subject: My travails of setting up a new iPhone 13 Mini

Hi List,

I fully intended to write up and post an iPhone 13 setup document as I did when
setting up my iPhone SE 2020 in late April of last year. However, after my
dreadful setup experience with my 13 Mini, I became so frustrated with just
getting it done that I stopped taking notes. As a cautionary note to those
setting up new devices, I strongly suggest that you don’t have a later version
of iOS running on your older device than the version of iOS running on the
newer device that is being set up with an iPhone to iPhone transfer. I’m
convinced that having iOS 15.01 on my SE 2020 and iOS 15 on my 13 Mini was the
main factor that caused my setup to fail.
Note that when I
tried restoring my encrypted backup while the 13 Mini was still on iOS 15,
iTunes returned an error message saying it couldn’t restore a backup of a later
version of iOS to a device running an earlier version. So, I’ve learned a hard
lesson and hope that my sharing this will help others to avoid something
similar.

Now, the only thing I have to figure out is how to get my iTunes music
playlists that I had previously synced to past iPhones to my 13 Mini. Since I
didn’t do a phone to phone transfer, my music didn’t move over. I would have
thought that an iTunes encrypted backup would have included music but I seem to
recall now that Richard might have mentioned this in another post. I’m a bit
concerned because I don’t think syncing music playlists with iTunes still works
as it once did. I’m not sure I feel up to resetting the 13 Mini back to factory
in order to attempt another phone to phone transfer but if this is the only
way to get my music moved over, I’ll consider it.

Yes, you can install iOS 15 on an iPhone 8. The only problems you will have is
with any glitches in iOS 15, There really aren't that many this time around.

Take care and stay safe!

Very mysterious! I would try turning off your phone and then back on and also
unplugging one of the Alexa devices, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in.
I am not sure it will work, but it is worth a try.

RE: question about iPhone and Alexa

2021-10-11 Thread dm-hill
Very mysterious! I would try turning off your phone and then back on and also
unplugging one of the Alexa devices, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in.
I am not sure it will work, but it is worth a try.

Hi all,

With VoiceOver, on a regular keyboard you can also use CAPSlock as the VO key,
don't know if the keyboard you're talking about has caps lock, but it might be
worth a try.

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone on this list has used or uses a pluggable foldable
Bluetooth keyboard with their iPhone?
I can’t seem to remember what the keyboard commands is to use VO commands.
Right now when my phone is connected, I can swipe to things on my phone but I
cannot activate anything with double tap gestures using the keyboard. I can
type into search fields and if I use the up and down arrows I can activate the
context menus but can’t activate anything. I’ve actually even tried using
space bar and the enter key as I would on a laptop keyboard but if memory
serves there are actual keyboard commands to evoke VO functions when using a
blue tooth keyboard.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Advice needed on new iPhone 13 setup and how patient to be

2021-10-11 Thread Mickey Quenzer
Hello Richard:
Thanks for that information.
What I’ve learned from all of this is that in case you need it it’s a good idea
to have your windows or Mac computer running the latest iTunes in case you need
it. As far as the thing about having antivirus software turned off, I had to do
this when I was doing installation of an iPhone 6 Plus a year and a half ago as
it was not complete until I did this. So as a progression that’s what I’ve
suggested people might want to do.

I wonder what kind of problems I’m going to have updating my wife’s iPhone if
she decides to buy an iPhone 13?
She at this point has an iPhone 11. She’s looking at getting the iPhone Pro 13
as it has a better camera any thought about that?

I need some advice. I’m in process of setting up a new iPhone 13 Mini. I got it
connected to my iPhone SE 2020 to do the device to device transfer. I got this
started and got face ID set up and then I was prompted to update the new iPhone
to iOS 15.01 which I began. This has been going on for about an hour and I’m
losing patience. I’m also curious why in the world a new device is set by
default to turn off after about 30 seconds. I’m having to touch the screen
every 30 seconds to prevent the device from going to sleep which I believe will
stop the iOS update. I’m hesitant to do a cold reset with the volume up, volume
down, and power buttons but I’m losing patience.

I welcome your recommendations and thanks in advance.

Re: Question about pluggable foldable Bluetooth keyboard

2021-10-11 Thread Robert Hill
Hi all,

With VoiceOver, on a regular keyboard you can also use CAPSlock as the VO key,
don't know if the keyboard you're talking about has caps lock, but it might be
worth a try.

My travails of setting up a new iPhone 13 Mini

2021-10-11 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I fully intended to write up and post an iPhone 13 setup document as I did
when setting up my iPhone SE 2020 in late April of last year. However, after
my dreadful setup experience with my 13 Mini, I became so frustrated with
just getting it done that I stopped taking notes. As a cautionary note to
those setting up new devices, I strongly suggest that you don't have a later
version of iOS running on your older device than the version of iOS running
on the newer device that is being set up with an iPhone to iPhone transfer.
I'm convinced that having iOS 15.01 on my SE 2020 and iOS 15 on my 13 Mini
was the main factor that caused my setup to fail. After about four failed
setup attempts and a couple of calls to Apple Support, I ended up setting up
the new iPhone as a new device with no iPhone transfer or restoration of any
backup. I then upgraded that new phone containing none of my settings or
data to iOS 15.01 when prompted. I then connected it to my Windows 10
computer and iTunes and restored the encrypted backup I had made to the 13
Mini. Note that when I tried restoring my encrypted backup while the 13 Mini
was still on iOS 15, iTunes returned an error message saying it couldn't
restore a backup of a later version of iOS to a device running an earlier
version. So, I've learned a hard lesson and hope that my sharing this will
help others to avoid something similar.

Now, the only thing I have to figure out is how to get my iTunes music
playlists that I had previously synced to past iPhones to my 13 Mini. Since
I didn't do a phone to phone transfer, my music didn't move over. I would
have thought that an iTunes encrypted backup would have included music but I
seem to recall now that Richard might have mentioned this in another post.
I'm a bit concerned because I don't think syncing music playlists with
iTunes still works as it once did. I'm not sure I feel up to resetting the
13 Mini back to factory in order to attempt another phone to phone transfer
but if this is the only way to get my music moved over, I'll consider it.
