RE: Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

2021-10-19 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah I have a friend that called across a café table,
Hey S*
Call the police!
When I got my first apple watch,

And next thing I know I’ve got a 111 operator on the line,

I just explained what happened and he / we hung up.

But hey it could have resulted in a $500.00

I didn’t do it with the five click on the side button, but I did when it was
set for three clicks. I accidentally got emergency. There is a cancellation
spot there that you can hit. Also, it’s sets off an alarm if you have it set to
do so, so you know that you’re dialing. Which I am grateful for, because my
grandson hit my watch when they first came out with SOS and called 911 while he
was getting his diaper changed. :-)

Since I had put up incorrect information on my web site, I wanted to send the
instructions provided by Apple from their support page. I will be updating my
documentation but this is important information that everyone should have handy.

Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208076

With Emergency SOS, you can quickly and easily call for help and alert your
emergency contacts.

Here's how it works
When you make a call with SOS, your iPhone automatically calls the local
emergency number. In some countries and regions, you might need to choose the
service that you need. For example, in China mainland you can choose police,
fire, or ambulance.

You can also add emergency contacts. After an emergency call ends, your iPhone
alerts your emergency contacts with a text message, unless you choose to
cancel. Your iPhone sends them your current location, and, for a period of time
after you enter SOS mode, it sends updates to your emergency contacts when your
location changes.

Call emergency services
Here's how to make the call on iPhone 8 or later:
Press and hold the side button and one of the Volume buttons until the
Emergency SOS slider appears.
Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services. If you continue to
hold down the side button and Volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a
countdown begins and an alert sounds. If you hold down the buttons until the
countdown ends, your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.

Here's how to make the call on iPhone 7 or earlier:
Rapidly press the side (or top) button five times. The Emergency SOS slider
will appear. (In India, you only need to press the button three times, then
your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.)
Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency

RE: Amazon

2021-10-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I realize that this might be the case for some people which is why I said " if
you have a computer with Jaws or NVDA why not use it" and not "why not just use
your computer with Jaws or NVDA".
I would definitely not want to be without my iPhone, but at the same time I
also would never consider not having a computer, there are way too many tasks I
do where the computer is 10 times more efficient and quick.
A few examples for me are creating and working with Excel, Writing and
especially editing longer passages of text, doing serious web browsing and also
my online banking since I prefer to print all confirmations for bill payments
and such to PDF files for archiving and while I could take a screenshot of a
confirmation page with the iPhone, it's just not quite the same and the
resulting file would not be accessible unless I performed OCR on it.

RE: Multiple Copies of an App?

2021-10-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No, you can't install an app multiple times, this can be easily checked by
going to My Account > My Purchases in the App Store and finding the app in
question. If you do you will find that it will say "Open" if the app is
installed and only if the app is not installed will it say "Redownload"

Hi, Group.

I purchased an app other day which is not supported much by Voiceover. So I
went to Apple Website and requested for refund. I did not delete that app yet.
I got the email and was told that my refund was approved but the money was not
credited back to my creditcard. This email I got four days ago and the money is
not back yet, is it because I did not delete the app yet?

Thanks!

fact, have installed some apps multiple times?

RE: Amazon

2021-10-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not that I don't think this shouldn't be fixed, but if you have a computer with
Jaws or NVDA why not use it, I find it much more efficient and I can search for
and read products descriptions much faster as well as adding items to the cart
and checking out. If your checkout preferences such as address and credit card
are the same and you select to remember that checking out using Edge or Chrome
with a screenreader simply means you use the button quick nav keys until you
find the Complete Purchase button and activate it.

Just because your currency also has the "Dollar" name does not mean it is
comparable to the US Dollar.
After all, an iPhone which costs $1,000 US costs 50,000 or 60,000 in the
Philippines because a US Dollar is worth 51 or 52 Philippine Pesos.

Yes, I did listen to it now, not sure, but I think maybe the first 10 or 15
minutes were about Apple Music and the new Airpods. These latest generation 3
Airpods sound interesting, but I still don't like the very expensive price. On
the one hand I'd love to try a set but then again I really don't know if I want
to spend whatever the Canadian price will be, $179 US will most likely mean
they are at least $249 here or maybe $259 to $279 Canadian, add to that our
combined 12% taxes in British Columbia and it will be a $300 or just over $300
set of earbuds. I have tons of points from my credit card and could easily buy
a pair this way, but there is still something which makes me think not twice
but thrice about spending that much on two little things I stick in my ear
especially since I don't really like to stick things into my ear canal and
probably wouldn't use them when I am going back and forth to my store every
day. And there are so many other things I can spend money on! We just bought a
new fridge and I'd love to get new kitchen cabinets and inf act I'd love to
take our bedroom and combine it with a small one next door for a larger master
bedroom and then to combine the third upstairs guest room with our living room
and on my list of long-term plans goes.

Sieghard,
I think you didn't see any messages about the presentation because it was
boring.
That is, unless you are majorly into Mac computers, which I am not.
They actually did a comparison with what they called a high-end Compact PC to
demonstrate the far better performance of the Mac laptop especially on battery
life and overall speed and energy usage.
I heard no prices, but I was admittedly not giving it my whole attention.
I was just curious.
It sounds like the Siri Apple music subsccription can only be accessed by voice.
That is all they specified.

I am surprised that I didn't find a single message tonight about this morning's
Apple Event. I didn't have time yet to listen, but saw a few headlines about
new Airpods, HomePods with new colours, better SIRI integration with Apple
Music and a new "voice only" subscription for Apple Music in addition to the
personal and family plans. This one apparently is only $4.99 US a month and
gives you access to all 90 Million songs Apple has plus all their curated
playlists, any idea how this is different from a regular subscription? Does it
mean you can't open the music app and find music this way or maybe you can play
anything, but can't add anything to your library or download it?

The rest apparently was all Mac related which is of no interest to me as a
Windows/PC user.

Subject: FW: Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services.
After the call ends, your iPhone sends your Emergency contacts a text message
with your current location, unless you choose to cancel. If Location Services
is off, it will temporarily turn on. If your location changes, your contacts
will get an update, and you'll get a notification about 10 minutes later.

If you use the Emergency SOS shortcut, you need to enter your passcode to
re-enable Touch ID, even if you don't complete a call to emergency services.

Stop sharing your location
When your location is being shared, you'll get a reminder to stop every 4 hours
for 24 hours. To stop the updates, tap the status bar and select "Stop Sharing
Emergency Location."

End a call
If you start the countdown by accident, you can cancel. On iPhone 8 or later,
release the side button and Volume button. On iPhone 7 or earlier, press the
Stop button, then tap Stop Calling.

If you accidentally call emergency services, you can end the call. Tap the red
end call icon, then confirm that you want to stop calling.

Add emergency contacts
Open the Health app and tap your profile picture .
Tap Medical ID.
Tap Edit, then scroll to Emergency Contacts.
Tap the add button to add an emergency contact.
Tap a contact, then add their relationship.
Tap Done to save your changes.
You cannot set emergency services as an SOS contact.

Subject: Bird Identification App

Hi,

I have been trying to find a good bird id app without much success until now.

I heard about the Merlin Bird Id app and have been trying it out, and so far I
am quite pleased with it.

They have packs that you can download of birds in different geographical areas.
So far, I have just downloaded the one for my area to try it out. It actually
has identified some birds which other apps were not able to id. They had
recently added the ability to identify birds from you recording the bird call
you are hearing. They also list the common birds in your area, and if you
choose one, you can hear a recorded bird call that someone has contributed to
the app.

So far, I am impressed, especially compared to some of the other apps I have
tried. I just wanted to pass this along in case anyone is interested.

Pam

RE: Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

2021-10-19 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hey folks,

Just a note on this if anyone’s keen to give it a try,

In most westernised countrys
I can’t speak for the Asian ones but I know here in nz and I believe in the UsA
Uk Europe etc,
If you dial your own countrys emergency number even though that isn’t the
local emergency number,
It still works.

So here in nz 111 is our dial for all services,

But if I dial 911 or 999 or 000 etc

It all goes through to the emergency services as required.

It’s a reaction to dial your own code therefore most places make it work in
their countrys as well.

Subject: FW: Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

Remove emergency contacts
Open the Health app and tap your profile picture .
Tap Medical ID.
Tap Edit, then scroll to Emergency Contacts.
Tap the delete button next to a contact, then tap Delete.
Tap Done to save your changes.

Turn off Auto Call
When Auto Call is on and you try to make an emergency call, your iPhone begins
a countdown and sounds an alert. After the countdown ends, your iPhone
automatically calls emergency services.

Here's how to change the setting:
Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Tap Emergency SOS.
Turn Auto Call on or off.
If you turn off this setting, you can still use the Emergency SOS slider to
make a call.

Change how you call
On iPhone 8 or later, you can choose to call by pressing the side button five

Yeah like us in nz,
Pretty much we double the price from what apple say it is.
I’m going to have a look at the mac book pricing later with the new processors
and see what they are in nz D.

Last time I looked it was about 6 k for the 16 inch mbp.

Take care,

Yeah, agreed,

And that seems to be the big problem now is that most things have been done /
created
So they need to be designing / redesigning the products to better utilise the
available services.

Such as how do they put the M1 in to an iPhone or Ipad not pro!

Get in to the fashion side of things like glasses along the lines of the bose
frames,
But again these things have been done,
So they need to do it better

I for one would love a set of apple glasses if it gave me the same result /
functionality as the frames I have.

And that’s only one thing.

They did announce a new third generation set of Airpods and the new voice only
Apple Music subscription, but yes, not exactly stuff for a Wow experience, but
then again you can't expect them all that much any more with devices and
services which are mature and which for the most part are not new inventions or
ground-breaking new technologies.

The sound system on the 14 and 16 inch mbp’s sounds pretty empressive,

Can’t wait to have a look at the pricing.

Other than that I can’t really see what they needed a presentation for,

None of the music / airpods etc really seemed new.

Take care,
Sieghard

Yes, I don’t think I ever use containers when navigating on my phone, but I use

When in settings, the main settings list is on the left, whatever is selected
there, will show up on the right hapf of the screen.
Navigating by containers may help, but just touch on the right half of the
screen and you should find what you want.

RE: Question about Phone pouch with card holder

2021-10-19 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
A friend gave me a mini wallet made by Haiku, that made from recycled material,
and is RFID scan proof and holds several cards, my ID, a Signature guide etc.
It is 2.75 by 4 inches.
It has an elastic band that keeps it closed and I carry it in the shoulder bag
my wife made for my phone, so it is easy to grab, not attached to the phone,
etc.

They have tons of stuff. I think this one is around $12.50 and is probably
also on Amazon...

Hello,

I am looking for a solution to carry a few cards with me without a big wallet.
There is the apple wallet with magsafe, but I don't know that I want one that
attaches to the phone.

I remember someone on the list mentioning a good phone pouch to clip on a belt
that also had room for a few cards.

Do any of you have any suggestions? Did any of you use the apple wallet?

Thanks for your thoughts

Pam

when I search for something then pick a result I can’t read anything on the

I have limited vision and I can see the page is there to start with but as soon

reinstalled the app but it has made no difference.
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks

accessibility. I am only having this problem on some products with Amazon app

RE: Amazon

2021-10-19 Thread Alan Lemly
For those experiencing Voiceover issues with the Amazon app or any other app,
with the app running, engage the rotor until Screen recognition is announced
and make sure it is off. I’ve found this corrected more than one app where
Voiceover wasn’t saying much of anything when trying to swipe and I found
Screen recognition was on and turning it off corrected the problem.

Hi all.
Is anyone else having trouble with the Amazon app? I don’t even know if I’ve
done an update recently, it’s not in the list of recently updated apps. But
when I search for something then pick a result I can’t read anything on the

Does anyone have any advice?

RE: 7 little words

2021-10-19 Thread Kathy Blackburn
I have a subscription to the Android version, which used to work well on my
BrailleNote Touch+. The Braille display could track what was going on the
screen, and game play was fast and efficient. When the company changed to
programming in Unity, that accessibility was broken. I wrote to them. We had a
series of messages back and forth. Either they were trying to be certain they
understood my answers, or English is not their first language. They made the
game self-voicing, but the Braille display no longer tracks what's happening on
the screen. I can play the game by turning KeySoft off, but all that swiping
and tapping just feels fiddly. I won't be renewing my subscription, I don't
think.

Bird Identification App

2021-10-19 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND

Pam

Re: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

2021-10-19 Thread regina alvarado
Everything is the same on the phone that has no home button. The only thing
that’s changed is that you use the side button on the right hand side to turn
on voice over if it doesn’t come up when you begin to set it up. All the
gestures are exactly the same except the ones Richard has so kindly pointed
out. They iOS is the same. VoiceOver is the same. the only difference is that
you swipe up from the bottom with the two little blips to go to home. If you
hear three blips you are in the switcher if you go from the top you will find
the notification Center and the control center I believe. I have not had much
luck with going from the top so I set another gesture for that purpose. Going
from the bottom and swiping up can be very uncomfortable at first so be very
patient with yourself. Just keep practicing and it will become so second nature
that you’ll be surprised you ever thought you needed a home button. Even when
I had the se I use the home button but I kept trying to use the swipe up. Now I
have a 12 and it was like coming home. Believe me it is not as big a deal as
you think it is. It’s all the same except that you use the side button and the
up-and-down button. Mostly you use the side button to speak with Siri and to
turn on voice over if you have to . Remember also that you can ask Siri to turn
on VoiceOver once you have the phone set up. You will be fine. It looks
daunting but it’s not.

I am having the same problems others have mentioned here. It’s really hard not
to be able to see what you are writing. I did use it yesterday, but I don’t
like not being able to correct mistakes and knowing I just have to make them. I
don’t use Twitter, so I’m not sure how to contact them. I looked, and basically
there was no way to do this. I too did not see any way for a workaround.

RE: Amazon

2021-10-19 Thread Paula Mack
I’m having the same issue, and the only workaround I can find other than using Aira or the Amazon Disability phone number is to locate the items I wish to purchase using the PC making sure to add each one to the cart. Once items are in the cart, you can check out either on the PC or with your phone. The cart area of the app seems to work as it always has. Regards,Paula Mack Sent from Mail for Windows From: 'Richard Claridge' via VIPhoneSent: Tuesday, October 19, 2021 12:58 PMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: Amazon Hi all.Is anyone else having trouble with the Amazon app? Thanks Sieghard,
Those were written based on bad information before I got a phone without a home
button and obviously needed editing.
I discovered two things just now though.

When I press and hold the power and volume down buttons, the emergency call
button comes up, with Cancel in focus, and if I hold it too long, it begins the
auto call to 911/emergency contacts. But, to get to the power off icon, I have
to flick left, not right on my 13 pro.

This may be a change as of iOS 15? The medical ID and location are other icons
on that screen.

I'm going to rewrite my insructions and stress the safer Settings, General,
Shut down method.

Thanks again,
Richard

Hi Richard,

There is one mistake in your list of commands, you write:

*Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.

On an iPhone without a home button you push and hold the power button which is
also called side button for SIRI. In order to power off the phone you press and
hold the side button and volume down button at the same time until the power
off menu appears, this menu also includes the SOS/9 1 1 call button so make
sure you are not on it but to swipe right all the way until you get to "Power
Off" before you double tap.

I find telling
SIRI to "Open General Settings" and to then do a 4-finger tap near the bottom
of the screen is just as easy, this puts focus straight on the shutdown button,
but you still get the same menu except that focus is at least for me reliably
on the power off button if you do it this way.

This is taken from my version of the VoiceOver Gestures which is on my web site.
But here is the sections relating to phones with no home buttons.

For devices without a home button:
Side button replacing Home button commands
*Unlock Phone: Facial Recognition, or tap the Side button and enter your
passcode
*Accessibility Shortcut: Triple click of the Side button
*Screenshot: Simultaneously press and quickly release the Side button and
Volume Up button. Caution: if you hold the volume up and side power button too
long, you will activate the Emergency SOS and end up calling 911.
*Activate Siri: Press and hold the Side button
*Reboot the iPhone: Press and release the volume up button, then the volume
down button, then hold in the side/power button for about 10 seconds or until
the Apple comes back and gradually fills in the image.
*Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.
*Activate Apple Pay: Double click the Side button

New Gestures replacing function of the Home button Starting at the bottom of
the screen and slide one finger up. You will feel three haptic vibrations
referred to as "clicks" (similar to the old "click" when pressing the Home
button). Each of these three clicks will activate a function. Note: The first
click alerts you that you are in the feature.
*Return to the Home screen:

then again you can't expect them all that much any more with devices and

Take care,
Sieghard

RE: October 18 Apple Event

2021-10-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

That is all they specified.

new Airpods, HomePods with new colours, better SIRI integration with Apple
Music and a new "voice only" subscription for Apple Music in addition to the
personal and family plans. This one apparently is only $4.99 US a month and
gives you access to all 90 Million songs Apple has plus all their curated
playlists, any idea how this is different from a regular subscription? Does it
mean you can't open the music app and find music this way or maybe you can play
anything, but can't add anything to your library or download it?

The rest apparently was all Mac related which is of no interest to me as a

Hi Richard,

There is one mistake in your list of commands, you write:

* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.

* Unlock Phone: Facial Recognition, or tap the Side button and enter
your passcode
* Accessibility Shortcut: Triple click of the Side button
* Screenshot: Simultaneously press and quickly release the Side button
and Volume Up button. Caution: if you hold the volume up and side power button
too long, you will activate the Emergency SOS and end up calling 911.
  * Activate Siri: Press and hold the Side button
* Reboot the iPhone: Press and release the volume up button, then the
volume down button, then hold in the side/power button for about 10 seconds or
until the Apple comes back and gradually fills in the image.
* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.
* Activate Apple Pay: Double click the Side button

New Gestures replacing function of the Home button Starting at the bottom of
the screen and slide one finger up. You will feel three haptic vibrations
referred to as "clicks" (similar to the old "click" when pressing the Home
button). Each of these three clicks will activate a function. Note: The first
click alerts you that you are in the feature.
* Return to the Home screen: From the bottom of the screen slide one
finger up until the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Activate the App Switcher: From the bottom of the screen, slide one
finger up until the third click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Activate Reachability mode (if enabled in Settings): From the bottom of
the screen, slide one finger up until you feel the first click. Quickly flick

Fazil, go to Apple.com and listen to the announcement, most o the keynote was
about Mac, but in a nutshell they mostly talked about a couple of new Mac Book
Pro laptops with a new M1 Pro and M1 Max processor,, the new "Apple silicon" as
rthey call it shows how they are moving away from Intel processors towards the
processors designed in-house which apparently are quite innovative and
powerful. I now listened to the event and even to the Mac part even though I
use Windows, what they say is impressive, but what I noticed again and again is
that these new Pro laptops are designed for professionals like people who work
all the time with huge graphic files and video files, people who design games,
do animation, fancy video editing and also music production. At one point Tim
Cook even said that these are what all the "Pros" want or those "who simply
want the best" or something along these lines. These are quite expensive
laptops which in Canada will be probably around $3,000 to $4,000 and they are
not what the average consumer will buy.

And you may be in a situation where you might not want to show somebody who is
threatening you that you are about to call 9 1 1, e.g. you pull out your phone,
you have to unlock it, you have to open the phone app, you most likely have to
tap the dial pad since I rarely have it active using mostly the Recent Call or
Favourites tab, then you have to tap out 9 1 1 and tap Call.
In a true emergency you may also have difficulties doing all that calmly, e.g.
what if you are trying to get out of your house or building when it's burning
down around you?
Holding down the side button and one of the volume buttons is a pretty easy and
straight forward proposition and most people could probably do it while running

2021-10-19 Thread Star Gazer
Why do it this way v. just typing 911 or whatever the digits are on the keypad?

Also, if you accidentally squeeze the buttons and then release them once you
realize you are about to make a 911 call, will the release of the buttons stop
the call?

My kid accidentally called 911 right after the home button went away and I had
to show her that when you do that,, you just tell them it was an accident.

On iPhone 8 or later, you can choose to call

FW: Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

2021-10-19 Thread Richard Turner

On iPhone 8 or later, you can choose to call by pressing the side button five
times. Here's how to change the setting:
Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Tap Emergency SOS.
Turn Call with Side Button on or off. Pressing and holding the side button
along with the Volume button will continue to work when this is on.

RE: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

2021-10-19 Thread Richard Turner

* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.

Quickly flick
down.

Notification and Control Center

Starting at the top of the screen, slide one finger down to feel the clicks.
* Access the Control Center: From the top of the screen, slide one finger
down until the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Access the Notification Center: From the top of the screen, slide one
finger down until the third click. Lift your finger from the screen.

Sieghard,
I think you didn't see any messages about the presentation because it was

RE: October 18 Apple Event

2021-10-19 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Quite a bit re the hardware,

The sound system on the 14 and 16 inch mbp’s sounds pretty empressive,

Can’t wait to have a look at the pricing.

Other than that I can’t really see what they needed a presentation for,

None of the music / airpods etc really seemed new.

Take care,
Sieghard

RE: problems following the Duo Lingo recent update

2021-10-19 Thread CJ & AA MAY
Is anyone else out there using Duo Lingo via their iPhone?
It updated yesterday and now I'm struggling to enter text. Has anyone else had
this issue, and if so, is there a work-around?
